Dark fantasy roguelike Ravenswatch is adding two free characters made for co-op

Roguelike ARPG Ravenswatch proved one of my favorite surprises of 2024. I hadn't followed it too closely during early access, but was immediately captivated when I jumped in ahead of the full launch in September. Structured like a more open-world spin on Hades and with nine Diablo-style classes inspired by all manner of classic fairy tales and legends, it's great fun solo or in co-op. But if you're someone who loves playing with a friend, Passtech Games has just revealed the perfect new DLC - and it's coming to the game for free.

If videogames have one universal truth, it's that bashing zombies in the head never gets old. Whether cleaving with the fireaxe in Left 4 Dead 2, sliding into the undead and unleashing combos with a makeshift shiv in Dying Light, or hitting infected in the dome with brown sugar in Dead Rising, there's just something about taking out these sub-human beings. One of the best to ever do it is Dead Island 2 - a sequel a decade in the making - and you can snag the game cheap right now.

Grim survival game The Forever Winter overhauls weapons and water in new update

Of all the new survival games that arrived in 2024, grimdark looter shooter The Forever Winter has a particularly captivating premise. In its wasteland ruled by the hulking mechs of warring megacorporations, you're but a tiny figure scrabbling through the dust. Every inch of space or ounce of water you can scrounge might prove the difference between life and death. Fun Dog Studios has nailed the tone - but so far, it's felt very distinctly early in the cooking process. Now, however, one of the team's biggest updates since launch revamps and upgrades many of the core systems, making it a great time to check back in.

I'm old enough to remember the first appearance of Minecraft, and it felt like a revolution. Sprawling, open, and freeform, it set the bar that the best sandbox games would live up to in the years to follow. Ruby Starts Scheming in Oshi no Ko Manga Volume 9

While Ruby and Aqua are twins in Oshi no Ko, it can really feel like he gets more attention sometimes. After all, many of the early volumes in the manga are showing things from his perspective or highlighting his plots. However, things start to shift in the eighth volume after a trip brings up past-life memories. That means in volume 9 of the Oshi no Ko manga, Ruby is the focal point. Not even the new B-Komachi, but this rising star herself. And I absolutely love it.

Editor's Note: There will be spoilers for volumes 8 and 9 of the Oshi no Ko manga below.

So to understand the setup for volume 9 of Oshi no Ko, you need to think back to what happened in volume 8. Ruby's been relishing her new life as an idol, even though she is of course still morning her mother Ai's death. Aqua's been the one focused on revenge, as we've always seen him more aware of his past life. In previous volume, she actually happened upon the body of Dr. Gorou Amamiya. That was the doctor visiting her that she had a crush on in her past life. (Who was reincarnated as Aqua, which she doesn't know.) Due to this discovery, Ruby learns that Gorou was murdered by the same two people who killed Ai.

This kicks off something inside her. Ruby channels that in her performance with the B-Komachi song "POP IN 2." It takes off and gets 20 million views. Her, Mem-cho, and Kana are hustling to take advantage of that boost to retain momentum. In the past, we really saw Aqua diving in and chasing every opportunity. Now, we're seeing her check in with Ichigo Saitou for advance and assistance strategizing. She's getting herself on the same variety show as Aqua. She's cultivating a more ditzy persona, while also cozying up to people who will have influence or connections.

We know Aqua is smart in Oshi no Ko. We see it. But until volume 9, we've really only seen Ruby as a passionate and driven young woman who is willing to go over the top for her dreams. Now, her intelligence is on full display. She's showing a type of cunning and sense of street smarts that shows she is Aqua's equal in her own way.

What I also appreciate about Oshi no Ko volume 9 is while this installment of the manga is focusing more on Ruby than ever before, it still also shows a quick update on Aqua. Which I feel is important, given the revelations during the Tokyo Blade arc. He was finally able to start to let things go and live for himself a bit. However, we're seeing here that while he made some breakthroughs, the trauma he went through as a child when he watched his mother Ai die isn't going to just disappear. So it's an appreciated insight to have those moments too.

Ruby is such an important part of the story in Oshi no Ko, and we've tended to see her as a supporting cast member or more innocent young woman pursuing her dreams until volumes 8 and 9 of the manga. But now she's doing her own research, plotting, and strategically positioning herself. It's a wonderful reminder that she shouldn't be underestimated.

Volume 9 of the Oshi no Ko manga is available now, and volume 10 will debut on May 27, 2025.

sims legacy collection birthday bundle

For the 25th anniversary of the series, Electronic Arts released The Sims 25th Birthday Bundle, which compiles the Legacy Collection versions of the first two games of the long-running life sim franchise. You can also, of course, purchase each one separately. Aside from the overall dated nature of the unmodded games (especially the first one) and some occasional hiccups with resolution and odd bugs, the remasters play well despite the horror stories floating around on the Internet.

While the classic stereotype of a Sims girlie features unhinged save files full of breeding farms, mpreg, and human experiments that would make an ethics board soil themselves, I'm actually very kind to my virtual families in The Sims 3. I meet their every need, fulfill their life wants, and make sure they have a dream home to raise their children in. And let me tell you, I am trying my best to make sure my Sims and Sims 2 families receive the same royal treatment. But no matter what, it's like they're opposed to the very idea of happiness. Over a decade of playing The Sims 3 really spoiled me when it came to the older games. I have no idea how I had happy and accomplished Sims in these games as a kid or teenager.

The Sims (the first one) didn't hold back in denting my confidence. This is a game that I don't believe aged well at all if you're serious about playing The Sims, and are used to the later entries in the franchise. It's fun if you want to have a little trainwreck of a family, since it's hard to keep these guys happy even if you're trying your best. Between the lack of basic QoL features, no proper direction outside of making more money or speedrunning death, and poor screen resolution optimization, it doesn't feel good to play at all. I'm playing The Sims on my laptop rather than my PC, and even on the smaller screen, I'm having real trouble reading a lot of the descriptions or seeing the lots on the neighborhood map. I'm sure it looks worse on a larger monitor.

I never realized just how uppity the sims in The Sims are. I'm used to The Sims 3, where they're a lot more open to my directions, even if they're not exactly happy at the moment. Chess and painting are activities that raise fun, so they usually do them without complaint, even if they're in the red. But in The Sims, I had to let my sim goof off and nap for about two hours before they were okay to paint, and by then, bedtime rolled around. That's pretty annoying, since that means they hardly have any time to maintain relationships with other sims. My sim was buttering up Bella Goth for days before she was willing to come over, because I could only call her in between trying to get him married to his intended belle while keeping him fed and clean.

After getting enough money to build a nice mansion (a more difficult task than I imagined thanks to the lack of modern Sims conveniences like even the eyedropper tool), I figured that surely, it would be easier for them to make friends and fall in love. On one hand, it did. Better furniture recovered motives faster and kept them happier, which meant I could give them more tasks per day. On the other, it just felt so hollow. I'm basically stuck playing the same sims forever and ever. If I'm not helping them with their 9-5 and social lives, I'm watching them goof off with the luxuries I bought with their hard-earned money. It got pretty boring, but switching to a new family didn't appeal to me either, because I knew I'd have to start that grind all over again.

the sims legacy collection depression
Screenshot by Siliconera

As a kid, building the dollhouse was really fun. But nowadays, if I wanted to focus more on the building than the actual life sim aspect of The Sims, I can just pick up The Sims 4. Despite all the scorn it receives from the community (and me), fans agree that its robust Build Mode is the best in the series. Even if I reach the top of my career in The Sims, the game will arbitrarily stick me into another job to climb the corporate latter again. There's no aging, so I can't start a family and try to keep it going for as many generations as I can. I can't even create a love dodecahedron, let it implode, and laugh at the drama and tears because the game's AI was simply not that advanced back then. It feels empty.

That's kind of the point, though. In a recent interview with the New York Times, series creator Will Wright said, "I never really thought of The Sims as inherently optimistic. I always thought of The Sims as slightly sarcastically nostalgic for a past that never really existed." Technological constraints aside, it's pretty brilliant to play a game where you can seemingly accomplish the American dream, only for it to be a hollow and unfulfilling victory. While The Sims certainly occupies a fond spot in my memories, I'm not sure if it holds up compared to other similar games in the genre. Life kind of sucks right now. So I'm not too enthused about playing a life simulator that seems to hammer home how futile the pursuit for happiness and wealth is.

sims 2 reaction
Screenshot by Siliconera

And on that depressing note, that's all I have to say here about The Sims. Maybe I just need a bit more whimsy in how I play, but I haven't been the "be mean to your sim for shits and giggles" or "make sims of people I know IRL or characters from other media, and watch them do stupid things" type of player since I was in elementary school. Playing generations and specific families in a legacy style is all I know now. The Sims 2 is wacky, though, isn't it? And I remember loving this game as a kid! So surely, nostalgia hasn't tainted my memories about this game.

As a whole, I'm right about that. I really loved the blast to the past, as well as how well it ran on a modern machine. When I was in elementary and high school, I played The Sims 2 on a Toshiba laptop with less storage than my friend's iPod. The loading screen to move between lots could take five minutes, and the game stuttered every time my sims did anything. Ironically, that's kind of how I still live today when playing The Sims 3 thanks to Reshade and my mods, but I digress.

The Sims 2: Legacy Collection boasts fast save and load times, as well as smooth animations, even when on max speed. I've done basically everything I can think of—vacations, university, kids, pets, ghost murder, and businesses—without encountering problems like crashing or whatnot. Short of doing things I know would hurt my game (like reviving Knut Futa or marrying in a Hula Zombie), I've not personally encountered major bugs with The Sims 2: Legacy Collection. While I ran into odd glitches here or there, they didn't actively take away from my experience.

At this point, I kind of expect the occasional hiccup from The Sims, though. One could argue Electronic Arts should've perfected the code for the remaster, but if modders—a community that fixes issues faster than EA can get to them—couldn't work out every kink in this game, I don't know what EA could've done. I'd also like to note the majority of my playtime was on a Windows 10 laptop. Since The Sims 3 had issues with Windows 11 if you didn't run the Alder Lake patch from LazyDuchess (or install a later build from Electronic Arts), the performance problems other users reported could stem from that.

sims 2 fire
His dormies just watched him die, so that was cool of them. Screenshot by Siliconera

The Sims 2 feels a lot more manageable after The Sims. I'd installed The Sims 2 Ultimate Collection ages ago, and found taking care of everyone a lot harder than in 3. It feels a lot closer to the life sim I'm used to. I just had to remember that the AI in The Sims 2 is a lot more stupid than in The Sims 3, and motives decay much faster. This is a lesson I had to learn the hard way, as I had a pregnant sim straight up die on me while I was watching her ugly husband play with the family dog. I didn't even notice she died until I wanted to send her off to sleep thanks to how small the UI. She was asleep, alright, but alas, 'twas a slumber she would never wake from (until I exited without saving).

I've long advocated that Electronic Arts should've implemented the personality, memories, and turn-ons/turn-offs systems of The Sims 2 into The Sims 3. A combination of Traits and personality points would've opened up a lot of fun combinations and possibilities. The terrible attraction system in Sims 3 only made Sims 2's seem so much more polished in comparison, even if it can feel shallow. I also really missed the little "Yay!" or "Ugh, really?" animations they'd sometimes do when directing them, even if they sometimes contradicted with what their actions and Wants panel tell me. Like, why are you complaining at me? I'm telling you to flirt with the guy you've wanted to fall in love with for the past three days.

There's something so The Truman Show about these little movements that makes them feel visibly alive in a way beyond the new games, which rely so much on flavor text and windows. 2 captures life as the average person knows it. Though it lacks the bombastic presentation of 4, as well as the open world and customization of 3, it does its main conceit of presenting a life sim so much better than the others. Not everyone's going to own a guinea pig planning world domination or travel to the future. But the experiences of opening a home business or passing out into your pasta while cramming for an exam are much more relatable. The world in The Sims 2 felt richer thanks to the details and care put into the interactions and content, and I'm glad the Legacy Collection can give newer players the opportunity to experience that.

The one thing I really don't like is the missing IKEA pack for Sims 2. Apparently, Electronic Arts couldn't renew the license for the re-release, so it's not a purposeful snub or oversight. If some day in the future, it decides to do something like this for The Sims 3, I'm guessing that the Katy Perry pack may suffer the same fate. Unlike the Katy Perry pack, though, the IKEA pack featured a lot of really useful items when decorating your home. The ubiquitous Swedish furniture store is a place I love going to and shopping at in real life, so it's too bad that I can't use its items in the base version of this re-release.

The Sims 25th Birthday Bundle is a nostalgic blast to the past that gives newer players the chance to explore more options beyond the third game, as well as offers older players the opportunity to relive their childhood. Compared to the conveniences of modern entries, some of the older titles might feel frustrating to navigate. It's almost like a metaphor for real life.

Dash Juice crafting in Monster Hunter Wilds

Dash Juice, an age-old consumable in the Monster Hunter franchise, makes its return in Monster Hunter Wilds. It's useful. Very useful, and if you're not crafting and using yourself, here's how you right that wrong.

How to craft Dash Juice in Monster Hunter Wilds

Dash Juice is a consumable in Monster Hunter Wilds that uniquely buffs your Stamina reserves, not by quantity, but with quality. When you consume Dash Juice, it recovers a portion of your Stamina and also temporarily reduces total stamina depletion when performing consuming actions, like dodging or sprinting.

Making Dash Juice requires two main ingredients, but nothing so out of left field that you should refrain from using it when necessary. They are Catalyst and Dash Extract. I will explain how you can get both.

How to get Catalyst

Catalyst is created as the combined result of Bitterbug and Honey, both of which are resources you can very easily obtain while exploring. Bitterbug and Honey are 'living' resources, which makes the best place to find and harvest them the Scarlet Forest. Here, you'll find tons of both resources, which you'll need to collect yourself if you're just starting out. Bitterbug looks like a blue beetle on your area map, while Honey has the symbol of a brown honeycomb.

Catalyst Material locations in Monster Hunter Wilds

Ride over to each of these symbols and interact with the resources to obtain them in your Item Pouch. When you have at least one Bitterbug Broth (crafted automatically from Bitterbug) and one Honey, open your Crafting List and scroll over to entry nine. If it is filled with a bunch of question marks for you, it means you haven't crafted Catalyst before. Nevertheless, click on the ????? prompt and confirm the craft to make your first one.

How to get Dash Extract

This material is a bit more difficult to come by, but I'll explain where you can find it. Dash Extract can be collected in two different ways, with one giving the player more agency. The easiest way is to pull it directly from the source, in this case, a Gypceros.

Gypceros spotted in Monster Hunter Wilds
Screenshot by Destructoid

Gypceros is a high-rank-only monster. Its Dash Extract is a fairly common quest reward from any Gypceros hunt, though this does mean it will take some time to amass this resource.

The second method is to get lucky through NPC Trading. NPC Trading can be quite random at times, so this way may not always yield the Dash Extract you're looking for. Nevertheless, it is an option.

Crafting Dash Juice

Once you have at least one Catalyst and one Dash Extract, you can finally begin crafting the Dash Juice you crave. The process is very simple. Open your Crafting List and scroll over to entry number 18. Once again, if the name is in question marks, it means you have not crafted this item before. Like with the catalyst, click on the '?????' and confirm the craft. Upon doing so, you'll have made your very first Dash Juice consumable.

When should you use Dash Juice in Monster Hunter Wilds?

Fighting Gypceros with Dual Blades in Monster Hunter Wilds
Screenshot by Destructoid

Dash Juice is useful for any hunter that consumes it, but it is especially useful depending on which weapon you're using. Both the Dual Blades and Bow make extensive use of Dash Juice, thanks to their very high Stamina requirements to perform at their best.

Dual Blade hunters are constantly moving around and entering Demon Mode to combat monsters. This is Stamina costly, which is why Dash Juice greatly eases the tension gained from trying to play Dual Blades without it.

Fighting Gypceros with a Bow in Monster Hunter Wilds
Screenshot by Destructoid

Bow users constantly use Stamina by sliding around the environment and skipping portions of the weapon's wind-ups in the process. This is incredibly valuable, but Stamina is expensive without Dash Juice active.

While both weapons can play without Dash Juice, I highly advise against doing so. It is a big quality-of-life helper for both, so don't ignore this consumable if you're playing either one of them.

Most of the time, you'll get the most points towards your goal of 1000 by playing the game normally. But if you're looking to tear through them as fast as possible to get those shiny new rewards, we understand. That's why we have this list of the best ways to get those points.

With the major 11.1 patch dropping recently, you'll likely have an easy time completing loads of quests and gaining reputation. These are two very fast ways to earn the 1000 points needed to complete the Traveler's Log this month. The week of March 11 is Mists of Pandaria Timewalking, which should be ideal for getting a massive chunk of points. If you sleep through most of the month, the Trial of Style runs from March 20-27. That'll be another place to score some easy points.

  • Earn Reputation Throughout Khaz Algar - 70 points - All you need is 3000 rep with any Khaz Algar factions. Most of this is easily completed by working a few dailies and weekly quests.
  • Shipping & Handling - Various - One of the major features in the "Undermined" patch is the new goblin vehicle. You'll do a lot of quests under "Shipping & Handling" for various characters. Drifting around Undermine, collecting Kaja cans, and completing deliveries will all stack up to earn you some points. As a bonus, you'll grind out some major reputation and other rewards.
  • Fulfill Crafting Orders - 200 points - A good reason to catch up with your professions is to earn yourself 200 points. Visit your profession benches in Dornogal to fulfill 10 crafting orders to grab 1/5th of your needed points.
  • Win 15 Pet Battles - 200 points - Before March 11, there's a Pet Battle event going on. Not only can you get 100% more experience for battle pets, but just a few battles will get you 200 points.
  • Capture a Rare or Uncommon Rarity Battle Pet - 100 points - While you're working those 15 Pet Battles, look around for something new. With the new Undermine zone, there should be plenty of new pets to find.
  • Trial of Style: /cheer at Players - 50 points - If you still need some quick points towards the end of the month, participate in the Trial of Style. Type /cheer into chat five times and earn yourself 50 points. It's just good manners!
  • Trial of Style: Use Trial of Style Spotlight, Dance Floor, and Flames - 100 points - If you have some saved up Trial of Style Tokens, try purchasing the Spotlight, Dance Floor, and Flames items from vendors in the instance. Use them all to earn a quick and easy 100 points.
  • Un'Goro Madness: Loot Dino Mojo - 150 points - From 3/17 until 3/19, go to Un'Goro Crater and loot 5 Dino Mojos during the event.
  • Darkmoon Faire: Complete The Humanoid Cannonball - 75 points - A fun little mini-game inside Darkmoon Faire will net you a fresh 75 points for completing it. Completing Firebird's Challenge will also get you another 50 points.

A group of non-playable characters gather around a marketplace called the Trading Post

For those of you who might just be coming back for The War Within, The Trading Post is a monthly activity that's very similar to a Battle Pass, but it's free. It's accessible via the Adventure Journal (CTRL+J). Complete different objectives within it and earn points. Fill the progress bar by the end of the month, and you'll earn a unique reward along with Traders Tender.

You'll find The Trading Post and a treasure chest in your capital city, as well as Dornogal. You get 500 Trader's Tender each month and the opportunity to earn another 500 through the Adventure Journal. There's sometimes an extra way to earn more Tender, like pre-ordering the Epic Edition of The War Within. As a new month starts, these items rotate out for a new list. You have the opportunity to freeze one item you can't afford and hold it for months. But if you miss out on something else you wanted, don't stress! Most items return at some point.

Warhammer 40K large-scale battlefield.

You may know the Warhammer 40,000 universe from tabletop miniatures or video games, but what about the novels? The Black Library is vast, with decades of inspired heroism and gut-wrenching horror. And the real beauty of 40K books is that there are limitless starting points based on whatever factions interest you.

While it's easy to assume that most 40K books are about Space Marines, that's not the case. Games Workshop's publishing division, the Black Library, constantly works to expand every inch of the narrative. That means humanity isn't the only perspective shown. It leads to some of the most interesting reads centering around the ruffian Orks, ancient Necron overlords, or even scheming servants of the Chaos gods.

The selections I've gone with represent some of the best stories across the various forces in Warhammer 40,000. This is not a list of the best 40K books overall. Regardless of the faction you like, one of these novels should help you spark your journey into this expansive narrative.

Horus Rising, False Gods, Galaxy in Flames

Emperor and Horus about to fight.

Believe it or not, humanity wasn't always worshipping a corpse on a throne and committing heinous acts in the name of religious fervor. The story of that decline is told throughout the entire 63-book Horus Heresy series, and the whole ordeal serves as a bit of a prequel to 40K as a whole. While a 63-book series is a tall ask for any reader, it's fair to say that those interested in reading about the universe's history should at least check out the first three books in the series.

Horus RisingFalse Gods, and Galaxy in Flames is a tight trilogy that starts the Horus Heresy series off, briefly introducing readers to what things were like before the seed of corruption was planted in the titular Primarch Horus and the proverbial shit hit the fan. The narrative is told through the eyes of Gavriel Loken, a loyal Captain of Horus' Luna Wolves Space Marine Legion. Over the trilogy, his resolve is tested as he watches the man he considers a father and his closest brothers descend into something unthinkable.

The Infinite and the Divine

The Necrons are an interesting faction in 40K. Initially an enigmatic and almost eldritch force, Games Workshop has shaped the species into a fearsome fallen empire in recent years. The Necrons gave up their organic bodies for immortality long ago, with the majority of the race being copies of rudimentary, servile consciousness implanted into robotic bodies. Only some of the more powerfully-willed leaders retained independent sentience, and the long passage of time often gives way to eccentricities and fixations. Necron novels are at their best when they examine the themes of immortality and how time shapes all things, and this recommendation stands as one of the most beloved Warhammerbooks, period.

The Infinite and the Divine is a novel that chronicles the rivalry between two iconic Necron characters: Trazyn the Infinite and Orikan the Diviner. Trazyn is like a more deranged version of the Collector from Marvel, single-minded in his desire to expand his exhibition of historical relics and pieces of import. Orikan, on the other hand, has serious aims to transcend reality itself to seize the power he seeks. Unfortunately, the two formidable Necrons have set their sights on the same object, the Astrarium Mysterious. Their clash over the item sparks the feud, but time hones it into a bitter obsession.

Brutal Kunnin'

The Orks in Warhammer 40K are generally a fun faction to learn about. They all speak with a bastardization of an English Cockney accent and want nothing more than to get into a good fight with their scrap metal equipment and stolen, retrofitted tech from other species. Though a little more simple-minded than other players in the 40K universe, Orks still have plenty of good stories that paint a proper picture of what it's like to be one of the meanest and the greenest. A perfect place for any aspiring greenskin to start is with Mike Brooks' Ork books, specifically with the first novel in the series, Brutal Kunnin'.

Brutal Kunnin' splits its time between Ufthak Blackhawk, an Ork in the service to "Da Biggest Big Mek" and citizens of an Adeptus Mechanicus Forge World. Ufthak and his boys are chomping at the bit for an opportunity to fight and loot the planet, but a rival group of Orks led by Kaptin Badrukk wants to weasel their way into a share of the spoils. The feud turns into a game of showboating as the two groups temporarily agree to put differences aside to squash a mounting resistance scrambled together by the denizens of the Forge World.

The House of Night and Chain

Image via Games Workshop

If you're more of a horror fan, 40K has plenty to sate your desire for things that go bump in the night. The Black Library even has a subdivision called Warhammer Horror. Depending on what tickles your fancy, Warhammer has a lot of different types of horror to offer. Want a mystery thriller? There's Bloodlines from the Warhammer Crime subfamily of the Black Library. How about a monster story? Easy, check out Dan Abnett's short story The Curiosity or Alec Worley's audio drama The Watcher in the Rain. My recommendation for horror fans is a good old-fashioned haunted house story.

The House of Night and Chain is a Warhammer Horror novel that's terrifying not because it shows some unknowable cosmic threat or body horror alien monster but because the book keeps everything relatable and human. Astra Militarum colonel Maeson Strock returns from conflict a broken man. Set to take up the role of Governor and straighten out his planet, Maeson struggles to reconcile with his children, uncover the truth behind his wife's mysterious death, and discover whether a malevolent force is behind the odd occurrences at the House of Malveil.

Eisenhorn: Xenos

If you want to get into 40K books but find some titles too dry or steeped in exposition, the Inquisition books might be just the solution. The Inquisition is kind of like the Imperium's secret police, with authority above nearly all others. These titles have a pace much more akin to detective or adventure flicks. The obvious starting point would be with the Eisenhorn series, primarily following the titular Inquisitor Gregor Eisenhorn.

Readers are introduced to the Puritan Inquisitor in Eisenhorn: Xenos. The book starts simple enough, with Eisenhorn pursuing an old adversary. However, after the Inquisitor claims revenge, he is quickly swept up into a conspiracy plot that drags up the name of a heretic believed long dead. The hunt for the truth leads Eisenhorn into a race against mysterious Xenos and the forces of Chaos as they vie for an artifact of dark power. The novel is packed with twists and turns, and it's only the first entry in a trio of trilogies.

Valedor

The Aeldari are something of a tragic species in 40K. The space elves inherited the galaxy after the Necrons toppled their own gods, well before humanity started its writhing existence. The Aeldari had no opposition, and so a golden age became an age of unchecked pursuits into pleasure and self-fulfillment. The whole ordeal birthed the Chaos god Slaanesh, cursed the Aeldari to have their souls consumed by the entity upon death, and fractured their whole society.

By the time we reach the actual 41st millennium, the Aeldari are a dwindling people cast adrift in the cosmos. Slaanesh has claimed many, and even more fell to Chaos' call and became the Drukhari, taking up residence in the once great city of Commorragh. Other internal factions, like the Harlequins or the Ynnari, further splinter the species. But what if these distant kindred had to band together to stop an all-consuming horde from growing even stronger?

Valedor is a novel where the protagonists are faced with a simple task: damage control. While Tyranid forces of Hive Fleet Leviathan rip through the system, Prince Yriel realizes that an even more serious threat is coming. In a previous engagement, a portion of another Tyranid menace, Hive Fleet Kraken, was spirited off into the Warp to delay disaster. Now, it's on a collision course with Hive Fleet Leviathan, and when the two meet, even more deadly Tyranids will be made. Yriel must make a last-ditch effort to stop this apocalyptic scenario, even working alongside Drukhari and other Aeldari adversaries.

Dark Imperium

If you want to be caught up on what's currently going down in 40K, it can be challenging to parse out exactly where to start. The Warhammer 40K universe has never really had the same kind of reset or hiatus that most other franchises experience, so there are literally decades of lore that continue to be built upon. While it's all fascinating stuff, readers need to start somewhere. What better place to start with the modern 40K  narrative than the novels that set up the current state of the galaxy?

Dark Imperium is vital to the ongoing setting in 40K, establishing much of what is currently taken for granted. Mortarion's Death Guard has returned, alongside the planet Cadia's fall and the Cicatrix Maledictum's formation, a great Warp rift severing the galaxy in twain. To meet these dark times, the Primarch of the Ultramarines, Roboute Guilliman, is revived, and Primaris Space Marines become an integral part of the Imperium. With the Death Guard's sights set on his Ultramar, Guilliman must summon the strength to defend his people in these uncertain times.

The Lords of Silence

Cover art for Lords of Silence book.

For the heretics out there who want to get a better understanding of what's going on under the helmet of a Choas Space Marine, there are options. I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the excellent Fulgrim or The First Heretic, the fifth and 14th books in the Horus Heresy series, respectively. However, that's hardly representative of Chaos in the current setting, and things get so much more enjoyable after these Asartes have had 10,000 years or so to develop some kind of fixation or quirk. That's doubly so for those prominent Heretic Astartes directly aligned with one of the four Chaos gods, like the Emperor's Children, Death Guard, Thousand Sons, or World Eaters.

The Lords of Silence follows a Death Guard warband by the same name, coloring the faction with some character over tales of exploits. While all of the standard chaotic debauchery and defilement are present, the book also offers an intriguing take on the philosophy of these blighted warriors. Even more interesting, readers get to see the undying gifts of Grandfather Nurgle take root and blossom in a hapless Guardsman who becomes a new member of the troupe.

Fire Warrior

Cover art for Fire Warrior book.

There isn't exactly an overwhelming amount of Tau content from the Black Library. The Tau are often depicted as either vastly more advanced or prepared than their enemies and economical in how they wage war. Couple that with the species' main philosophy of "The Greater Good," an idea that every action should do the best for the most Tau, and you don't necessarily end up with riveting stories encapsulating the same kind of action or tension as other 40K factions. Thankfully, something we did get for the species makes up for all of the missteps that have dogged the Tau's narrative endeavors.

Fire Warrior is a novel adaptation of a PlayStation 2 game by the same name. While everything about that last sentence should indicate that readers ought to stay away from Fire Warrior, the opposite is actually true. The story nails the Tau perspective, and it does this by providing readers with a relatable character. The protagonist, Kais, is a Tau Fire Warrior who attempts a near-suicide mission behind enemy lines. The goal? To save a crash-landed Ethereal, a Tau leader.

Lion, Son of the Forest

Cover art for Lion, Son of the Forest.
Image via Games Workshop

While Dark Imperium helps readers get a general idea of what the setting is like in the current era of Warhammer 40K, it's not the most recent occurrence of a loyalist Primarch returning to the story. Lion El'Jonson is the Primarch of the Dark Angels, and he was thought lost after his home planet of Caliban was destroyed following the Horus Heresy. In truth, the Primarch slept under vigil by the enigmatic robed Watchers until the day of his return came.

Lion, Son of the Forest details the return of Lion El'Jonson to the setting. The Primarch awakens to find himself older, no more wiser, and on the wrong side of the Great Rift. Separated from his Dark Angels, The Lion struggles to find his place in the hostile shadow of the Imperium he knew. It's not long before the Primarch comes across something he is familiar with: the Dark Angels who fought against him during Caliban's destruction, The Fallen. However, The Fallen have been waiting for their lost father to return to make amends and clear their names.

Image of FragPunk Tier list

FragPunk has an interesting set of lancers available for the players to pick from; some are better than the rest.

The following tier list will help you differentiate the wolf from the sheep, as playing the best lancers will be more rewarding. All of them are better in their respective roles than the other options, and it makes sense to master them at first.

Complete FragPunk tier list

To differentiate between the lancers, I have opted for three tiers.

  • S-tier: These are the best lancers available in FragPunk currently, and they're the top choices in their respective roles.
  • A-tier: These great characters are some distance away from the top.
  • B-tier: Decent characters with limitations in their kits, and you'll have to work hard to make them competitive in the general meta.

FragPunk S-tier list

  • Broker is one of the best characters to start the game with, as he is available for free. Moreover, his kit is easy to learn and perfect for understanding the different mechanics. Goddard's Vengeance does a decent amount of damage and knocks back enemies. His kit has a lot of throwable devices, allowing you to operate from a distance.
  • Corona's kit is interesting, as the ability to teleport with Fast Lane has a lot of advantages. Combined with Hothead, the two moves are great for crowd control, while Ashes to Ashes does a fair amount of AoE damage and buffing Corona. Not the easiest lancer to learn, Corona is still great for players with decent skill.
  • Kismet is a great support character, as Walk on the Wild Side turns her invisible and invulnerable for a short time. She's also good at finding enemies with the Hello Goodbye ability, which scans for enemies in front of her, while Misery Angel bypasses protections offered by barriers.
  • Sonar is an A-tier character if you're playing solo. Her kit entirely depends on teammates, as Sound of Silence hides the noise of their footsteps. Both Sonic Surge and Echolocation can expose enemy locations, offering a rich strategic advantage to your team.

Fragpunk A-tier list

  • Pathogen is excellent for a supporting character, as Emotional Rescue does AoE heals, while Shroom Wall creates temporary blockades. She's not only about heals, as Killer Queen can trap enemies and deal damage over time. She's the only proper healer in the game and adds much value to a team.
  • Serket might be one of the hardest lancers to learn inside the game. Her abilities from Station to Station hide and teleport her to her target's location, while Dilemma and Gold Dust Woman are good for nerfing the enemies' movements.
  • Axon will be a delight for those who play a lot of shooters. Electric Guitar is essentially a shotgun that shoots sticky grenades. Landing a kill reloads the weapon, while you can also use Sticky Fingers to throw grenades that can bounce. He is a good choice for aggro players who believe that offence is the best defence.
  • Zephyr is an S-tier character once you learn how to use her abilities. Midnight Rambler and Fade Away allow players to hide Zephyr, while Get Back allows her to create a location to instantly spawn back in case of danger. You'll have to know when to strike to succeed with her, as a false move could be extremely dangerous.
  • Hollowpoint is simple but effective, as Meteora reveals enemies while charging up. Smoke Screen also does the same if an enemy gets caught in its path, while Paparazzi puts a trap on an enemy. Her offensive potential largely depends on how accurately you can aim with a mouse, but her potential to reveal enemies is an added benefit.

Nitro in Fragpunk
Image via Bad Guitar Studio

Fragpunk B-tier list

  • Nitro might be easy to learn, but her gadgets can be destroyed easily. While Chug Chug deploys a powerful drone, it can be destroyed easily.
  • Chum faces the same problem as Nitro, as the enemy can destroy Chomper. Both Explosive Bait and Smoking bait are good at trapping enemies, but they have a limited scope of operations.
  • Jaguar is one of the better blockers, as his Live Wire and Electric Avenue are good abilities for trapping and slowing down enemies. However, he's not a mobile lancer, and his skills rely heavily on how good your teammates are.
  • Spider's ability to teleport enemies to your location is innovative, but mastering it can be a nightmare. You'll also need excellent coordination with your team to make the most out of your abilities.

The smithy working in Monster Hunter Wilds

Buildcrafting in Monster Hunter Wilds, and the series in general, is as central to the gameplay as fighting monsters is. And while each game introduces new Skills and adjusts old ones to shake up the meta, there are five you can always count on to improve a build.

The five Skills you want on every Monster Hunter Wilds build

Note that the Monster Hunter Wilds Skill meta is in flux as the community starts reaching the endgame and digging into the numbers. We'll be updating this article once the meta solidifies. The Skills we're listing here are the best workhorse options for almost any build you can dream up.

Critical Eye

The Critical Eye Skill in Monster Hunter Wilds
Screenshot by Destructoid

Critical Eye has always been a top-tier Skill because it only has one effect: increasing your build's Affinity. Affinity is the chance to score a critical hit with an attack. You'll know you've landed a crit by a bright pink star burst next to the damage number. Crits deal 25 percent additional damage.

The Critical Eye Skill in Monster Hunter Wilds isn't quite as strong as it once was, with each stack only granting a four percent Affinity boost up to 20 percent. However, if you pair that bonus with wound damage, additional Affinity from your weapons, and other gear, you can potentially build into 50 percent Affinity or higher. One critical hit every two damage ticks adds up quickly.

Critical Eye also helps out those weapons that start with negative Affinity. Negative Affinity gear often has a higher raw damage value to compensate for losing out on crit chance, and you'll deal 25% less damage if you hit within the negative Affinity zone. Keeping Critical Eye active can mitigate those chances significantly.

Weakness Exploit

The Weakness Exploit Skill in Monster Hunter Wilds
Screenshot by Destructoid

Weaknes Exploit, or WEX, got a modest but still statistically notable nerf in Monster Hunter Wilds. However, it's still one of the best generalist perks in the game, as its effects don't rely on specific actions or playstyles. Play the game in almost any way, and WEX will do the work.

WEX's effect is simple. Hit an enemy's weak point (for yellow damage), and you get up to 30 percent extra Affinity on the hit. You also get up to a 20% bonus Affinity when hitting Wounds. That's it. It's always on, and if you're attacking a monster's head, limbs, and other squishy areas, WEX will always give you value. The only determining factor is the amount of damage it can modify, as it doesn't provide raw or elemental damage on its own.

Agitator

The Agitator Skill in Monster Hunter Wilds
Screenshot by Destructoid

Another endgame staple, Agitator, is the first on this list to require an in-hunt activation condition. Thankfully, that condition is very common. Agitator activates whenever a monster enters the Enrage state (almost always after a roar). Like WEX and Critical Eye, its effects are simple.

While an enemy is Enraged, Agitator grants up to a flat +20 Attack and 15 percent additional Affinity. Combining it with WEX and Critical Eye can, therefore, easily get you to 100% in-hunt Affinity with almost no effort on your part.

Agitator's biggest advantage is the flat Attack stat bonus. The higher your Attack, the more damage your weapons deal. While an additional 20 points to the stat doesn't seem like much, it does add up over time, and there's no upper limit on how high you can boost your Attack beyond what you can equip.

Attack Boost

The Attack Boost Skill in Monster Hunter Wilds
Screenshot by Destructoid

One of the simplest Skills in Monster Hunter Wilds, Attack Boost, or AB, does exactly what you think it does: boost your Attack stat. What's interesting about high levels of AB is how it scales your attack.

The first three levels of AB grant a +3, +5, and +7 bonus to your Attack, but levels four and five instead increase your attack by two percent and four percent, respectively. Levels four and five also provide a +8 and +9 Attack stat bonus, respectively, that's retroactively calculated into the percent increase.

In short, if you can, get to at least level four of Attack Boost for the much more generous damage increase. If you can't, it's not a huge deal. Even a few stacks of AB can go a long way.

Critical Boost

The Critical Boost Skill in Monster Hunter Wilds
Screenshot by Destructoid

Another simple Skill that pairs well with the other four listed here, Critical Boost also does exactly what you'd think: increases critical hit damage. Again, by default, a critical hit deals 25% additional damage. Critical Boost...boosts that damage by up to 40 percent at level five.

Critical Boost has no activation requirement beyond you getting critical hits. It's always on, waiting for one to happen. Like WEX and Critical Eye, however, Critical Boost cannot increase your base damage. It only modifies what you can already do. Sure, it's a big modification, but if your raw damage is pitiful, your crits will be too.

Monster Hunter Wilds Skills we're watching

The Burst Skill in Monster Hunter Wilds
Screenshot by Destructoid

Monster Hunter Wilds added a number of new perks to the pool with incredible potential. There are also a few old standbys worth watching as well.

  • Burst provides a small raw and elemental damage boost on the first hit, increasing that bonus after five hits. On the right weapons (the Longsword, Dual Blades, and other fast-hitting options), it could be a real menace in the right hands.
  • Flayer makes inflicting wounds easier and automatically deals a burst of non-elemental damage once you've dealt enough damage of your own. Wounds are a central mechanic to hunting Monster in Wilds, making Flayer a solid contender for the top tier.
  • Resentment provides up to a flat +25 bonus to your Attack stat whenever you have red, recoverable health. This effect defined high-risk, high-reward gameplay in both Monster Hunter World and Rise, and it very well could again with Wilds.
  • Evade Window increases the number of invincibility frames you receive when dodging. At the highest levels of play, the goal is to never be hit at all, and Evade Window trades damage for safety, which is antithetical to most endgame builds. For a larger audience, it might be a better, more comfortable choice.
  • Coalescence increases your elemental damage and status buildup after you recover from a blight or status of your own. It was incredibly powerful in previous games in certain builds, regardless of the weapon you used, so I'll be curious to see if it makes a return to form in Wilds.

Those are the Skills I'd recommend always having on hand regardless of what kind of build you're going for. They're easy to understand, easy or free to activate, and never truly go out of style.

The Hunter faces Arkveld. .

If you plan on putting up a fight against any of the High Rank heavy hitters in Monster Hunter Wilds, understanding all of your stats will be a must. And there's not a better one to start with than Affinity.

Here's a full breakdown of what Affinity does in Monster Hunter Wilds and a few ways to boost the stat no matter where in the game you currently are.

What does Affinity do in Monster Hunter Wilds?

The MH-equivalent to Critical Rate, your Affinity in Monster Hunter Wilds will dictate the chance of your strikes dealing critical DMG. Unlike most games, each critical strike in Monster Hunter Wilds will only boost your damage by 25%. However, you can raise this value by equipping weapons, armor pieces, and decorations/talismans that carry Critical-related skills.

A Critical Jewel, II, as shown in Monster Hunter Wilds.

You can get decorations in MH Wilds by either using the Melding Pot at Suja or as a reward for completing High Rank hunts and quests. In both cases, the decorations you will get will be subjected to RNG via the game's appraisal system. Make sure to also keep in mind that you will only be able to equip decorations whose levels are equal to or lower than that of your items of choice.

How to boost your Affinity in Monster Hunter Wilds

You can boost your affinity in Monster Hunter Wilds by picking weapons featuring a positive amount and armor pieces featuring Affinity-focused skills. Making use of decorations featuring the Critical Eye skill is also a sure way to get a hefty boost via its up to +20% effect (level 5).

If you cannot wait and don't mind their bland looks, forging an Artian Weapon will be by far the easiest path to getting +50% Affinity in MH Wilds, as even their Rank 1 versions can get up to 15-20% if forged with multiple Affinity Infusion materials. Upon getting your chosen one, you will then be able to push that number even further by reinforcing it at any forge. Doing so will allow you to roll for up to four extra stats (five if upgrading a tier-two weapon).

The Artian Defender I Chaged Blade, as shown in Monster Hunter Wilds.

You can get the materials needed to upgrade your Artian Weapons by completing hunts and mining while exploring. The materials needed to craft the weapons, on the other hand, can only be obtained by hunting Tempered monsters. Before you ask, yes, the materials will also be subjected to RNG.

The Egg Salesman is holding a golden egg in Fisch

Another weekend and another small Roblox Fisch update. Unfortunately, there isn't a creative name for this one, so it's just called the double experience update (2X XP). Thankfully, there are a bunch of things in this new update that are worth talking about. Here's Everything New in Fisch 2X XP Update.

Glimmersuit Boots

After months of complaining about how the movement speed is slow in Fisch, the developers have finally given us a way to move faster on foot. To get the Glimmesuit Boots, visit Dr. Crookspine in his secret lab and bring him three Secret items. Check out our guide on All Items for the Glimmersuit Boots in Fisch. Just thinking about how easy it will be to move in the Calm Zone and the Abyssal Zenith is making our mouths water.

Double XP weekend is back

Hooray! Just like in the last update, the devs are giving us double XP for three whole days. This stacks with all other XP boosts you might already have (like the Double XP gamepass and the Rod enchantments). Take this opportunity to level up as much as you can over the weekend. We managed to get more than 100 levels during the last update, and we aim to break our record again.

Egg Salesman

If you think Fisch doesn't already have enough microtransactions, then you're in luck. A mysterious Egg Salesman has appeared on any island with a Fish merchant and is selling loot boxes... uhh,... we mean Eggs.

A single egg costs 99 Robux, but you can also buy 10 Eggs at once for 799 Robux (you get two for free this way). Of course, the real question is: What can you actually get from these Eggs? Well, here are the odds:

  • C$2,500 - C$250,000 - 49% chance
  • Golden Tentacle (bait) x 5 - 40% chance
  • Legendary Cosmetic Case - 10% chance
  • King of the Kraken Boat - 1,5% chance
  • The Blubbernaut Boat (works as a Submarine) - 0,5% chance

As usual, we'll let you decide if these are worth pursuing. Of course, if you don't like games of chance, there are always the bundles...

Note: You can also buy Golden Tentacles from Moosewood for 49 Robux for 5, and 199 Robux for 25.

New Bundles, Bobbers, and Skins

It wouldn't be a Fisch update without new limited bundles. The suspects this time are very much similar to what we always see. Two boat bundles, a few rod skins, and some new bobbers. Here's everything:

  • Red Race Bundle - 799 Robux - Red Racer Boat + Crystal Lantern + 64 x Server Luck for 1 hour
  • Toro Veloce (boat) - 1,499 Robux - One of the fastest boats in the game
  • Celestial Relic - 299 Robux - Skin for the Mythical Rod
  • Celestial Ascension - 499 Robux - Skin for the Rod of the Exalted One
  • Banana Rod - 2,499 Robux - Skin for Heaven's Rod with a casting effect
  • Quantum Anchor - 99 Robux - Bobber
  • Drone - 79 Robux - Bobber
  • Jetstrike - 79 Robux - Bobber
  • Fisher's Bobber Bundle - 199 Robux - Quantum Anchor, Drone, and Jetsrike Bobbers

It's up to you to decide whether or not any of these are worth getting.

That's all there is to it. Enjoy the extra movement speed, the double XP weekend, and the new premium items. If you haven't already, check out our Fisch codes for some freebies.

ZZZ Hugo drip marketing.

HoYoverse has announced another new character, Hugo, for the Zenless Zone Zero 1.7 update via the latest round of drip marketing on the game's official social media.

He is one of the only two new Agents to debut in the new version, which is expected to go live on April 23, 2025. Interestingly, Hugo is also from the Mockingbird faction, which is a criminal group.

Hugo drip marketing for Zenless Zone Zero 1.7

https://twitter.com/ZZZ_EN/status/1898222169597071783

Following Vivian's drip marketing on March 6, 2025, HoYoverse has revealed that another Mockingbird member called Hugo will be released as a playable character in ZZZ 1.7.

Hugo's combat Specialty and Attribute are:

  • Specialty: Attack
  • Attribute: Ice

As of this writing, his Rank hasn't been confirmed, but the eventual livestream should provide more details.

Here's Hugo's self-introduction in his official drip marketing post:

"My dear friend, I'll be back, like an avalanche."

Similar to previous ZZZ drip marketing posts, you can also find dialogues about the new Agent from other characters. Here's what Lycaon has to say about the Mockingbird member:

"It is precisely because we are living in this era of disasters that I cannot acknowledge the so-called 'justice' he believes in. Carving out a malignant tumor forcefully with sharp claws will ultimately leave only a scar named vengeance."

Lycaon states that he cannot acknowledge Hugo's so-called "justice" because of the era of disasters they are living in. The former disagrees with the Mockingbird member's way of doing things and firmly believes that forcefully doing things with violence will only birth new disasters.

Meanwhile, a top-rated comment on a news article about a collection theft incident in New Eridu reads:

"A charity event? In reality, it's nothing more than a method for those self-righteous hypocrites to collude in secret. Criminals? The Mockingbird be considered a hero instead!"

The anonymous NPC doesn't specifically talk about Hugo but his faction. The commenter argues that Mockingbird should be considered a hero instead of those conducting the charity events to collude in secret.

Hugo's expected release date

While Hugo's exact release date is currently unknown, you can expect him to debut on one of the following dates:

  • Phase 1: April 23, 2025
  • Phase 2: May 14, 2025

Do note that this assumes the game follows the six-week update cycle. Furthermore, Hugo is more likely to arrive in the second phase since he was announced after Vivian.

Best mouse settings for Fragpunk

an image of best FragPunk mouse settings
Screenshot by Destructoid

When it comes to mouse settings, the best sensitivity differs from player to player. The reason being some use palm grip while others use claw grip, and the hybrid grip is also not out of the question.

Secondly, mouse weight and space matter. Some players rely on their wrists for precision aiming, while others use arm movement. It boils down to your own preference, but if you want to start somewhere and experiment from there, you can use the settings below:

Look Sensitivity 0.6
Invert Camera Y-Axis Off
Camera Y-Axis Sensitivity Off
Camera Sensitivity Custom
ADS Mouse Sensitivity Multiplier 0.9

Now that you know the best keyboard and mouse settings, be sure to check the FragPunk Twitch drops to get some cool rewards.

Dr. Crookspine's Secret laboratory in Fisch

After more than five months of complaining, the Fisch developers finally listened to our claims and gave us an item that helps us move faster: the Glimmersuit Boots. If you've been playing a while, you know how annoyingly slow movement is, but not to worry, with these boots, we'll finally be able to run like a real... uhhh... fisherman (?). Here's how to get All Items for the Glimmersuit Boots in Fisch.

Dr. Crookspine Invention Quest in Fisch

A Fisch player is talking with Dr. Crookspine
Screenshot by Destructoid

When you log into the game, head to Dr. Crookspine's (not Dr. Glimmerfin's) Secret lab. It's located between Roslit Bay and Sunstone Island. Essentially, if you head from one of these islands to the other, you'll find it (it looks like an Oil Rig). When you arrive, climb the rope to the top, talk to the concerned workers if you like, and accept the quest from Dr. Crookspine. He needs the following items to make your speed boots:

  • Boots
  • Rocket Fuel
  • Speed Core

Now, you might be thinking that you'll need to do a series of tasks to get each of these, but in reality, these are just Secret Fish. So, you'll need a good rod, good bait, and as much luck as you can possibly get. You can also get Server Luck to make this even easier, but it's entirely possible without it, it just takes longer.

How to get Boots in Fisch

A Fisch player is fishing somewhere in the ocean
Screenshot by Destructoid

Boots are considered a Secret fish in the Ocean Bestiary. Grab a rod with the highest Luck boost you can get (the Heaven's Rod is really good here, but we used our Challenger's Rod) and cast a line. Additionally, try to fish during an Aurora Night and get a Luck buff from Merlin. For Bait, use anything that gives you the most Univesal Luck, such as Weird Algae.

The Boots aren't difficult to reel in, strangely enough, but you'll still get a notification like you would when you catch a Secret fish.

How to get Rocket Fuel in Fisch

A Fisch player is fishing at Mushgrove
Screenshot by Destructoid

Rocket Fuel is also considered a Secret fish. Go to Mushgrove, use the same rod + bait + luck buff setup like you did to get the boots, and hope for the best. Again, just like with the Boots, it's really easy to reel in, so don't worry about having high Resiliance or anything. Just focus on getting that Rocket Fuel to... uhhh... bite.

How to get Speed Core in Fisch

A Fisch player is fishing at Sunstone Island
Screenshot by Destructoid

The Speed Core is located at Sunstone Island. This is very convenient because you can visit Merlin whenever your Luck boost runs out and just pop it again. As you can probably guess by now, the only tricky part is getting it to "bite", while reeling it in is super simple. Use the same rod, bait, and boost setup just like you did for the last few items.

That's all there is to it. Enjoy traveling at faster speeds with your new Glimmersuit Boots. Check out our Fisch codes for more freebies.

The Hunter, equipped with the Charge Blade.

Its ability to bring even the mightiest foes to heel via its Element Discharge combos saw the Charge Blade set itself as one of the most devastating weapons in Monster Hunter Wilds.

But contrary to other favorites like the Switch Axe and Longsword, getting a hang of the weapon can take a while. After all, enabling the above will demand that you first charge your elemental phials. Here's how to charge and the basics of how to use the Charge Blade in Monster Hunter Wilds.

How to charge the Charge Blade in Monster Hunter Wilds

The Hunter in Sword Mode.

You can charge your Charge Blade phials in Monster Hunter Wilds by pressing R2 + O/RT + B while in Sword Mode. As you can guess, the move —which is simply referred to as Charge— can only be performed successfully after you generate enough Sword Energy via your sword mode attacks. It is also possible to gather multiple energy stacks in one go by performing the following Charged Attack: Double Dash combo:

  • Hold O/B in Sword Mode + Release the input once your sword flashes red + Follow up with a weak strike (△/Y) for a few extra slashes and a good dose of extra energy.

The colors of both your sword and the phials below your weapon durability meter will also serve as reminders of how many elemental charges you can gain via Charge, with yellow representing three, light red four, and red five. You can also overcharge your phials to get up to five extra by performing sword attacks following a successful charge.

A fully charged sword in Monster Hunter Wilds.

After infusing your phials with a charge, you will then be able to enter Axe Mode and perform the weapon's signature Element Discharge attacks by pressing O/B and △/Y + O/B. A few other ways to enter Axe Mode can be done by performing a Morph Slash (R2/RT + △/Y) or entering Power Axe Mode. The latter will lower the cost of your regular Element Discharge attacks by half and can be triggered in the following ways:

  • By hitting wounds with a Focus Slash: Double Rend attack (L2/LT + R1/RB no matter your mode of choice).
  • By performing a mounted Focus Slash (R1/RB) against a wound.
  • By manually performing a Savage Axe Slash (△/Y) after a Perfect Guard.

Keep in mind that switching to Axe Mode before performing a charge will not fill any phials. In the same vein, you can also enter Element Boost and enable a Super Amped Element Discharge attack by performing a Shield Element Boost (continue to hold O/B following a charge). Be aware, as the move will drain all of your charged phials.

How to use the Charge Blade in Monster Hunter Wilds

Although a highly technical pick, the game plan when using the Charge Blade is simple: you must focus on building up your phials before letting out its extremely destructive discharge combos at the right times. To mitigate the long animations the weapon is known for, use traps to lock targets and abuse blind spots when facing faster foes —make sure to also rely on Sword Mode for both mobility and its defensive capabilities.

ThE hunter performs an Charge Axe Amped Element Discharge attack in Monster Hunter Wilds.

As performing a Charge will not lock you into Axe Mode, getting quick charges mid-combo is also a must here, so master that. Ideally, you should focus on building up a devastating offense by entering Power Axe Mode while having both Element Boost active and a large number of phials ready.

How to Perfect Guard and perform Charge Blade Power Clashes in MH Wilds

The Hunter performs a Charge Blade Power Clash in Monster Hunter Wilds.

Now that we have our offense taken care of, it's time to focus on the basics of defense, aka the ability to guard, Perfect Guard, and trigger Power Clashes. Mastering this won't be hard, as you can guard by simply holding R2/RT while in Sword mode and Perfect Guard by hitting the input at the moment your foe's attack is about to hit you. Unlike a regular guard, a Perfect Guard will not consume weapon sharpness and negate all damage.

The Power Clashes, on the other hand, can only be triggered by Perfect Guarding against certain attacks multiple times. Given that consistency, I don't recommend focusing on triggering the sequence at all. Instead, treat it as a welcome bonus for a solid defense, and don't take unnecessary risks.

WWE 2K25 promo image.

WWE 2K25's Advanced Access might be over a day old, but the MyRise mode continues to be a nightmare for players.

The popular mode has failed to work for many, as several gamers have repeatedly reported their game crashing when they try to enter it. If Reddit threads are believed to be the problem, they appear universal across all available platforms.

If you're in the same boat, here are a few possible solutions for temporary workarounds.

WWE 2K25 MyRise mode possible fixes

As of writing, 2K has acknowledged the MyRise mode crashes on their official X account. A permanent solution is expected closer to the game's full launch in the middle of March. If you're desperate to play the mode, here's what you can try.

https://twitter.com/2KSupport/status/1898082321800347648

  • Close the game and restart your PC/console. After restarting the game, go directly to MyRise mode. This solution comes from the game's official forum, so it's the first workaround that you should try.
  • Some players have reported that deleting the WWE 2K25 save temporarily fixes the issues. However, there's no guarantee that this process won't delete your progress from other modes like Showcase. If you have made some progress, I will avoid trying this method.
  • If you're on the Xbox Series X|S or PS5, you're entitled to an old-gen version of the game. Temporarily resorting to the old-gen version might allow you to play the MyRise mode.

That's pretty much all the known workarounds to combat the MyRise crashes in WWE 2K25. I am eagerly waiting for a permanent solution from 2K, as there are other known bugs, like Advanced Access not downloading properly on Steam.

Aside from the MyRise mode, the game has plenty of interesting content working normally (thankfully). You can unlock a series of Persona cards by grinding the MyFaction mode. It's arguably the best alternative to try if you're looking to enjoy high-octane action.

Kanya, Fishing Questline NPC in Monster Hunter Wilds

Fishing in Monster Hunter Wilds is a bit more involved than your standard mini-game, yet when hunting a Whooper, you may find yourself rather pressed. Fortunately, I've caught quite a few already and can provide you with the intel to catch some yourself.

Where to find a Whooper in Monster Hunter Wilds

If you're looking for a Whooper fish, chances are, you've already been progressing down Kanya's fishing questline in Monster Hunter Wilds. In standard Monster Hunter fashion, Kanya doesn't explain where you can find a Whooper, but, thankfully, they aren't all that rare if you know where to look.

Whooper Map Location in Monster Hunter Wilds
Screenshot by Destructoid

Whoopers are most commonly found in the Scarlet Forest, specifically Area 17, Great Shore Lake. Monsters do not come to this area as it is a designated mega-fishing zone. When heading over to it, I highly recommend setting up a Pop-up camp so you can fast-travel to this location whenever you need to get some quality fishing done.

Shoreline for fishing in Monster Hunter Wilds
Screenshot by Destructoid

From the designated Pop-up camp location, drop down onto the shoreline and head toward the sea. Whoopers are pudgy-looking fish, but they do not always spawn when you need them to. The time of day and environmental season both actively play a role in what fish spawn. The quantity in a school, and where they'll be, is also affected by these two factors. So, if you don't see any Whoopers, return to the Pop-up camp and change the time of day and season to Morning and Fallow. Then, return to the shoreline and look for them again.

How to catch a Whooper in Monster Hunter Wilds

Potential Whooper Spotted in Monster Hunter Wilds
Screenshot by Destructoid

Once you spot one, it's time to catch it. Select your fishing rod and make sure the lure you're using is set to Tuff Joint Bait. This is extremely important as without it, the odds of you catching a Whooper is next to none. If you don't have access to Tuff Joint Bait, then you need to progress further on Kanya's Fishing questline. When she tasks you with catching a Whooper, you'll receive the required bait.

With your rod cast, wait for a Whooper to bite down. This may require some time and a little line jigging on your end. Use Slow Reel when a Whooper is near to attempt to attract one to your line. When one finally does bite down, unlike all the other fish you've caught, Whoopers are considered large-scale fish, which means you'll need to play an additional mini-game to reel it in.

Large Fish mini-game in Monster Hunter Wilds
Screenshot by Destructoid

Pulling in a Whooper requires you to fight against the giant fish's attempts to break free. This means you'll need to guide your line in the same direction the Whooper is pulling it. If you don't, your line will break, losing it. Whoopers will constantly change directions, so you'll need to be paying attention the entire time you have one on the line.

Whoopers will also leap out of the water to try and get free. Restrain your line so that it does not break during this incursion. Eventually, Whoopers will tire themselves out trying to break free and slow down. During this time, use Quick Reel to pull the fish in as fast as possible. You will likely need to do this several times, as tired Whoopers will still attempt to fight back on occasion. Once you've done this dance enough times, the Whooper will be yours for the taking.

Wind Breaker Season 2 poster

The juvenile gang anime Wind Breaker will be returning soon, as it gets an official release date. Sakura and the Furin High gang will be serving more action-packed fights when Wind Breaker Season 2 premieres on April 3.

The reveal came from a new trailer, featuring some bloody scenes from the upcoming season. The new trailer also shows a preview of the second season's ending theme song "It's myself" by shytaupe. Additionally, the anime's official channels released a new key visual with the tagline "Don't underestimate Bofurin!".

https://youtu.be/zi1mQXPpf84

About Wind Breaker

The Wind Breaker anime is an adaptation of Satorou Nii's ongoing manga of the same name. It's being published on Kodansha's Magazine Pocket website. The manga's individual chapters have been compiled into 20 tankobon volumes, though the latest volumes are yet to be available in English. In 2023, Kodansha USA began publishing the manga in print.

The first season of the anime aired in April last year. It had 13 episodes, with its last episode airing in June 2024. As soon as the final episode of the first season aired, Season 2's production was officially announced. Toshifumi Akai will continue to direct the series at the studio CloverWorks. He will be helped by Hiroshi Seko (series composition), Taishi Kawakami (character designs), and Ryo Takahashi (music).

If you haven't caught up to the anime yet, the first season is available for streaming via Crunchyroll and Netflix. The second season, however, will exclusively be streamed by Crunchyroll.

Wind Breaker Season 1's synopsis on the streaming website is as follows:

"Welcome to Furin High School, an institution infamous for its population of brawny brutes who solve every conflict with a show of strength. Some of the students even formed a group, Bofurin, which protects the town. Haruka Sakura, a first-year student who moved in from out of town, is only interested in one thing: fighting his way to the top."

About The Beginning After the End

The anime adaptation of The Beginning After the End was first announced in October last year. Studio A-Cat will be producing the anime, with Keitaro Motonaga helming the team as its director. Other staff include Takamitsu Kono (series composition), Masami Sueoka (character designs), and Keiji Inai (music).

It will be adapting TurtleMe's web novel of the same name. It also has a webcomic adaptation, which can be read on Tapas. Tapas also boldly stated that The Beginning After the End will be the first anime adaptation of an American web novel and webcomic.

Tapas describes the series:

"King Grey has unrivaled strength, wealth, and prestige in a world governed by martial ability. However, solitude lingers closely behind those with great power. Beneath the glamorous exterior of a powerful king lurks the shell of man, devoid of purpose and will.

Reincarnated into a new world filled with magic and monsters, the king has a second chance to relive his life. Correcting the mistakes of his past will not be his only challenge, however. Underneath the peace and prosperity of the new world is an undercurrent threatening to destroy everything he has worked for, questioning his role and reason for being born again."

Crunchyroll previously confirmed to simulcast the series.
