I was very happy to see Daemon X Machina: Titanic Scion giving Marvelous's flashy mech game a second outing. Its hyper-stylized look is satisfying to the eyes, and the more high-mobility action compared to Armored Core 6 makes it a worthwhile alternative to FromSoftware's 2023 hit. Speaking to PCGamesN at Gamescom, producer Kenichiro Tsukuda talks about the decision to move to a more open-world design for the sequel, the challenges faced by the team, and how the legacy of mecha and robots has expanded in recent years.

Lil' Miss Vampire Can't Suck Right Is a Super Cute Manga

It's always fun to find an anime adaptation of a new-to-us manga is about to start running after the English release starts running, and that's what's going on with Yen Press' Lil' Miss Vampire Can't Suck Right. It started running in the US in July 2025, but already the anime will appear in time for Halloween with an October 2025 launch. Given how cute and even silly the manga is, it gives me high hopes for how the other adaptation will turn out.

Editor's Note: There will be mild Lil' Miss Vampire Can't Suck Right manga volume 1 spoilers below.

Tatsuta Ootori and Luna Ishikawa are classmates in school, and she's a recent exchange student. Oh, and she's a vampire. Which isn't scary. Everyone is fine with it, and it seems some even find it rather cool. Except when the two end up on cleanup duty together, Tatsuta learns her secret. We see her constantly snacking because she's absolutely terrible at sucking blood. He feels bad for her and agrees for her to take a sip. While Luna's still bad at finding veins and getting something to eat, she also finds that his blood is so delicious that she's actually able to eat more than usual.

While in most manga, this would be setting up a romance (see Call of the Night), I like how instead Lil' Miss Vampire Can't Suck Right sets it up more as a friendship. Tatsuta, while intimidated by Luna initially, immediately responds to the first feeding frenzy as "I'm a mom now." Her sucking his blood is never shown as being sexy in any way. Instead, after the first one is done, he has multiple bandages on his arm and both looks pale and emaciated.

This ends up basically growing so Tatsuta is genuinely taking care of Luna, who's something of a girl failure. She's not able to suck blood from people! She is incredibly messy. She's clumsy. She's constantly snacking, even when she shouldn't. When she sneezes, she doesn't blow her nose. He's not just helping ensure she stays fed and alive. She's basically growing up. Plus, through his influence, we see her open up to other characters. It's all very endearing.

Not to mention, Luna's character design is cute. Her standard appearance is very sweet. But even cuter is the fact that when she sucks blood, she shrinks down to the size of a baby or child. So when she's sucking on someone like Tatsuta or another friend, she ends up looking like a chibi version of herself. It's a fun design choice that also makes sense when you consider she's out of energy and refueling.

The structure of the four-koma panel mini comics in the Lil' Miss Vampire Can't Suck Right manga volume also help emphasize just how cute the series and Luna both are. In the first one, a classmate is asking her about her favorite food. It turns out, she loves garlic. But she realizes that hurts her image if she brings that up. So she plays it off and instead says blood is her favorite thing.

Lil' Miss Vampire Can't Suck Right is such a funny and cute manga, and it makes me hope the anime adaptation maintains that same atmosphere. From the outset, we're presented with a heroine who is adorable and attempting to maintain the illusion of what a vampire should be. When she makes a friend who knows her secret, Tatsuta doesn't see it as sexy or a chance to get close to a love interest. Instead, he's seeing himself as a mom feeding her kid and as a test dummy. Sure, I definitely expect we could see it involve some romantic elements later on. But for now, it's just adorable and unabashedly silly.

Volume 1 of Lil' Miss Vampire Can't Suck Right is available now, and Yen Press will release volume 2 of the manga on January 20, 2026. An anime adaptation will air in October 2025.

A Yautja, a Xenomorph, and a Marine fighting each other in Aliens vs. Predator.

As any Sunday, we're once again taking a trip down memory lane, looking at games big and small that have been forgotten in our day and age, either for a peculiar reason, or just because time did as time does and washed them away from our minds.

This time around we have Rebellion's unique multiplayer horror title from 2010, Aliens vs. Predator, which pits the Marines, the Xenomorphs, and Yautja in a three-way battle against each other, both in singleplayer and online multiplayer.

With three distinct campaigns revolving around the same time and location, alongside a ton of game modes and multiplayer maps, Rebellion's 2010 title could have been a lot more, but is nevertheless a nice title worthy of revisiting (especially with some friends).

Three campaigns, one story

The Xenomorph and Yautja battling in Aliens. vs Predator.
Just look at those graphics, even for today's standards. Image via SEGA

Aliens vs. Predator features three somewhat distinct story campaigns, each revolving around a particular faction or species. As is standard for the extended Alien and Predator universes, we have the Marines, the Xenomorphs, and the Yautja, common and eternal enemies featuring in countless movies, games, comics, and TV shows.

The Marine's campaign is claustrophobic, atmospheric, horrifying, and tense, as ammunition can run out at any time, and death can emerge just as easy from the shadows. You're much more vulnerable than the other two, being the weakest lifeform of the bunch, and are more prey than predator. This type of gameplay provides a great basis for survival horror, though the game's janky nature tends to make it a bit too challenging at times.

The Xenomorph and Predator campaigns are much more action-oriented, the former having a more gripping story. Though both are powerful beings, they play significantly differently, and are as much in contrast to each other as they are to the Marine. The Xenomorph has to lure its prey, stalk, and be a true "predator," which is not so much the case with the actual Predator, i.e., the Yautja, who can struggle to take down weaker enemies (which is not as true in the multiplayer, but we'll get there).

All in all, Rebellion's 2010 action-horror title and its three stories, each sharing a common setting and time, provides a fun and unique way of storytelling. Though Rebellion would go on to create the likes of the Sniper Elite franchise and tell much more grounded and realistic tales, it goes without saying that what it did with Aliens vs. Predator is truly amazing.

The jankiness of 2010 gaming can be forgiven today, looking back at just how horrible games have become in terms of technical issues. In our 2010 review, we complained about AvP's technical failings, and, while true, modern machines aren't necessarily going to be met with this kind of trouble.

And, speaking of which, AvP runs surprisingly well on 2025 OS and hardware, with most of its problems of old now just a memory.

Gripping, haunting, multiplayer action

A bunch of Xenomorphs attacking a Marine in a tunnel in Aliens vs. Predator.
Getting swarmed by a bunch of Xenomorphs is a tough situation, even for the most seasoned Marine. Image via SEGA

The multiplayer is much like the singleplayer, i.e., it usually features the three species or factions going against each other in three teams. For the purpose of this revisit, I've primarily played the team deathmatch mode, given that it's the only one that's still kicking 15 years down the line. Dedicated servers mean this game will never truly die, which is something I greatly respect about older games.

In team deathmatch, players are divided into three squads, each playing only one of the species. The Yautja, i.e., the Predators, are fast and nimble and versatile, sporting both ranged and melee weaponry, alongside a ton of defensive mechanisms to fend off hostile attacks.

The Marines are primarily run-and-gun types, with various weapon types, automatic guns, bombs, and the like. It's what you'd expect from a movie like Aliens, where a squad of well-armed American muscles goes in to deal with any kind of xeno trouble, and it's fun as all hell.

The Xenomorph are true predatory aliens who can walk along walls no matter the angle (which can actually lead to some motion sickness to be honest) and pounce at the opportunity to rip Yautja and Marines apart.

Each of the classes plays significantly differently, with dynamics shifting depending on the map. It's incredibly in-depth and fun, and, compared to most first-person multiplayer offerings of the past decade, it's very unique. It is also certainly something I'd love to play with a bunch of friends, swapping species in between matches, which is something you should consider, especially since the game can often be purchased for as low as $5.

So, in general, Aliens vs. Predator isn't Rebellion's best, but its graphical fidelity, uniqueness of gameplay, and execution of one of the best cinematic universes ever, are enough to call this game good and give it another visit so many years later.

Nostalgia factor: 7/10 — the Alien and Predator franchises don't get enough love in the video game space, making each revisit of this title a true nostalgia trip.

Recompiled Review Score: 7.5/10 — Fifteen years ago, we gave AvP a 6.5, but a small bump in the score is warranted as most of the technical issues have been ironed out by sheer technological advancement, while its gameplay now looks shiny and polished compared to our live-service scape.

Closer: AvP is a great game with a very unique approach to singleplayer storytelling as well as a three-team multiplayer mode which we seldom see these days. The dynamics in gameplay, variance between species, and replayability factor are all pretty high, making this game worthy of a proper revisit every now and again, especially with a full server of friends.

Do let me know if you've ever played 2010's AvP or if you've liked it at launch or any point down the line.

Primordial Uniques in Last Echo Season 3

Last Epoch has added an extra layer of gears to the game in Season 3, and you can use Primordial items to enhance your builds to take them to the next level.

If you have played the game before the start of Season 3, you'll be familiar with the Unique and Exalted gears. Primordial is an enhanced version of Unique and Exalted gear types, making them far more powerful. Let's look at how they work, what you need to remember, and the limitations.

How do Primordial gears work in Last Epoch?

Primordial items provide certain benefits based on your build and gear type. Primordial gear variants come in two types: Primordial Unique and Primordial Exalted.

Primordial Exalted

These items have Tier 8 Affixes that are significantly more effective than Tier 7 (by 50% to 100% on average). All Affixes can upgrade to the Primordial Exalted variant, but some are only available as drops. Others can be crafted with required resources, and you can have a maximum of six Affixes under Primordial Exalted items.

Primordial Unique

Primordial Unique is a great way to unlock enhanced effects that can completely transform your skills, make special summons, or improve your general stats. They can also gain Legendary Potential and use it to create Legendaries.

How to get Primordial Items in Last Epoch?

Participating in Primal Hunts via Mysterious Rifts is the most consistent way of obtaining Primordial Items. Completing them will earn you different rewards, including Primordial Materials. Here's a quick rundown of what you can get in the current Season 3 build.

  • 22 of the 25 Primordial Uniques can be bought from Skarven Bloodhorn using Primordial Materials. The remaining three will drop from Rift Beasts, but that depends on luck.
  • Primordial Exalted gears can be crafted using the Rune of Evolution, bought from Skarven Bloodhorn.
  • You can also find Imprinted items by meeting their exact drop requirements.

Maybe it's this summer's maddening heat causing my brain to act up, but I couldn't help but reminisce about the tropical beach vibe emanating from so many games from the early aughties. You might not remember, but you'll thank me for reminding you, because it was the best.

The knee-jerk reaction might be to think that late '90s or early '00s video games didn't invent tropical beaches, and that's true. Having a game set on a tropical beach is almost like a cheat code, one that immediately has our brains associating it with fun times, even if the game itself fails to live up to its looks. Still, these early tropical beaches usually existed in games about beach sports like Wave Race, the jet ski levels from Crash Bandicoot 3, or games about driving in Miami, like OutRun. These are successful series, albeit niche ones. It was only when the PlayStation 2 generation arrived that we began to witness the full-scale invasion of the tropical beach in video games.

There are no better games to jog one's memory about the importance and the constant presence of the tropical beach at the time than the trifecta of Final Fantasy X, Kingdom Hearts, and GTA: Vice City.

And it wasn't just a PS2-only thing. The GameCube also made two significant investments in tropical beachfront properties at the time. The first one with Super Mario Sunshine, which many see as the black sheep of the Mario family, but no one can deny its beauty, likely due to its setting. The other, and most successful GameCube foray into tropical islands was—you have likely already guessed it—The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker.

Much like Super Mario Sunshine, the entirety of Wind Waker takes place on a tropical world, a stark departure from anything seen in either series up until that time. And so a tropical beach seemingly became a requirement for a team trying to make the biggest and best game of the generation. Like, even the Halo series pulled it off, a grittier and more tone-muted one, sure, but an attempt was clearly made nonetheless:

Zanzibar in Halo 2
Image via Microsoft

The tropical beach was even the only setting in Far Cry for the PC, which features arguably the most beautiful environments of this kind in gaming history. It also remains my favorite game in the series, having only had its place in question for a bit when Far Cry 3 came out—you know, the other game in the series also set on a tropical beach.

The beautiful tropical beach from Far Cry
Image via Ubisoft

These environments were even prevalent in the Dreamcast, as seen in Sonic Adventure and Phantasy Star Online. That's no coincidence: the '00s were when the tech finally allowed for beaches large (and with water effects beautiful) enough to evoke the feeling of being on a beach despite being inside a barely lit bedroom.

It's good that the PS3 era mostly forgot about this aesthetic. Repeating things just because they succeeded in the past gets old fast. Also, that period was marred by engines seemingly only capable of rendering stuff through a brown filter, and we need our beaches green, blue, and lush. Sadly, tropical beach vibes have been mostly gone ever since—just look at one from Death Stranding. "The beach" is there, yeah, but the tropical vibes are completely absent.

Video game tech is better than ever, and players have been treated to some of the best vistas of all time in recent years, but, outside of titles such as Uncharted 4, most games have been overlooking this beautiful staple for too long. If any devs working on a game that'll come out during a future summer are reading this, please consider bringing the beach vibes back, even if just for the most important level in the game. Every summer gamer will thank you for it.

Popular open-source online chess site Lichess is one of the best alternatives to the chess.com juggernaut. While the platform is known for its versatility and stability, occasional issues still arise from time to time. Here's what's going on with Lichess and if it is down for everyone else, too.

What is Lichess?

Lichess.org is a free and open-source chess platform launched in June 2010. It is maintained by a French nonprofit helmed by creator and programmer Thibault Duplessis. The site offers all the common features you would look for elsewhere in online chess, but without any paywall (except for voluntary donations). It is the most popular online chess site after chess.com, and it promises a free and open chess experience forever.

Lichess generally offers a fantastic play experience, but occasional downtimes still occur. In case of scheduled maintenance, a big "Lichess will restart in 10 minutes" sign will appear on the page at the appropriate time. But there are other cases when things can go poof.

Is Lichess down?

As of writing, the latest big outage of Lichess came on Aug. 24, due to server hardware issues. As explained by Lichess on Bluesky, "the cause currently appears to be a crucial server abruptly shutting down due to hardware failure, outside of our control. We think things should be stable but will be monitoring closely." They also added that they won't be able to refund rating or restore affected game positions.

Visiting the site, you are greeted by the following message:

"We lost two disks in a row, winning the lottery!
We'll be back shortly, please do not panic
Apologies for the downtime."

Based on information from the volunteer-ran Lichess4545 league's moderators, the best-case scenario at 1pm ET was a four-hour downtime, so the platform is expected to stay down at least until 5pm ET.

To get updates on the maintenance, you can keep an eye on this page, as well as @lichess on Mastodon@lichess on Bluesky or the lichess Discord. And, you know, if push comes to shove, there's always chess.com, or some of the best chess-themed video games to try.

Primal Hunt promo mechanic in Last Epoch

Primal Hunts is one of several new additions in Last Epoch Season 3, and it can be a confusing mechanic if you're new to the game.

You may likely wonder how you access these hunts in the first place, as they're completely random. However, understanding the basic concept will let you participate in these hunts, and you'll also get to win the available rewards consistently.

How to access Primal Hunts in Last Epoch?

The process of participating in Primal Hunts is available in the Campaign section at Area Level 10. To do so, you'll have to look out for Mysterious Rifts. These are different from Torn Rifts, and you'll find them to be rarer in comparison in Last Epoch's third season.

Torn Rifts and Mysterious Rifts, along with Echoes, can appear in the campaign. However, chances of encountering them in Quest Echoes and Arena Echoes seem minimal. I haven't encountered any, and nor has the community.

How to use the Primal Hunt mechanic in Last Epoch?

The Primal Hunt encounters allow you to upgrade your Rift Beasts after you defeat them and add a hatchling to your inventory. After you have defeated a Rift Beast, you can pick one evolution out of three. Your chosen evolution will be applied to all Rift Beasts on the same Lineage. You'll also get general loot and specific Primordial Materials.

You can get these evolutions by encountering a Mysterious Rift. These rifts will have Ancient Era enemies, and you must track and defeat your selected Rift Beast. You can then use your Rift Beast in Torn Rifts to defeat enemies and get more loot. You'll need to play a few Torn Rifts before encountering a Mysterious Rift again.

When it comes to evolutions, you can't select them more than once. However, there are over 60 evolutions to choose from. Additionally, every Lineage begins with four evolutions of its own, and they will reset once you complete them.

This is essentially the major nature of the grind related to the new Primal Hunt mechanic. Primordial Materials are obtained when you play and clear a Mysterious Rift. You can exchange them to earn valuable loot from the Hunt Master NPC. Plenty of useful items exist, including Rune of Evolution and Primordial Uniques.

IT STEALS blue screen in a dark checkerboard corridor with cardboard boxes in the forefront

You awake in darkness, only able to see two meters out in front of you. The narrow, bending corridors lead to no exit. You quickly realize you're in a maze, but there's no indication as to how you got here. The design looks man-made, yet it houses impossible things. Did you fall into the backrooms, or were you placed here as part of an experiment? Does it even matter? Escape seems like a faraway dream, and yet, you're not the only lost soul wandering around this nightmare.

The walls feel as though they're screaming, the edges pull closer towards you, looking to consume your every breath. There are orbs laid out in front of you, tiny hopes of freedom, for collecting them seems to do something in this world. Like a twisted game of PAC-MAN, your time in this hellhole will feel endless for the hunt is on and it's your life that's at stake. Your body's flight response is in force for something is sprinting full-speed at you, and curling up into a ball in the corner won't help. Tools are at your disposal, but the horror you face plays its own mindgames. How long will you last?

Looking at an orb while holding a camera in IT STEALS

This is IT STEALS, a maze-running indie horror game that makes PAC-MAN feel like a walk in the park. From the brilliant indie developer, Zeekerss, creator of Lethal Company, IT STEALS is a panic-inducing experience that'll keep you on the edge of your seat and never let up. The dark, pixelated aesthetic paired with the perpetual fear of the unknown creates a horrifying atmosphere as you can't identify or process what's after you. Its concept is simple: Collect the orbs and survive. But you can never trust that where you're running to is free from terror.

What's so effective about IT STEALS when compared to most horror is that the monsters are stealthily hunting you. It's as though you're on the receiving end of Metal Gear Solid's Snake or The Last of Us Part II's Ellie. You are being hunted, and there's not much you can do about it. Yes, the premise is always the same, but the threat adapts as you progress. Rather than getting used to the environment and the horrors that reside in it, the rulebook gets thrown out the window with every mode you bravely enter. You have no choice but to run at all times, with few moments given to stop and take a breath. Every mode is a relentless and thrilling experience that offers a unique challenge.

The daytime mode in IT STEALS

While Dark Deception uses a similar formula to deliver its scares, IT STEALS takes the horror up a notch as you cannot ever get tired or used to its repeated gameplay loop. Achieved in five available game modes, which offer an intense challenge with new rules and monsters, IT STEALS hints at what's to come by their names: Classic, Shutter Mode, Hide and Seek, Living Halls, and The Phantom. Rather than sticking to strict patrolling patterns, the entities' unpredictability resembles that of Puppet Combo's creations and Alien: Isolation's Xenomorph. Their design is a breath of fresh air (albeit suffocating most of the time) as IT STEALS' monstrosities are clever in their approach and erratic design. There's no second chance. Once you're grabbed, that's it, game over.

Each mode feels like you're the monster's plaything, a prey to be amused and entertained by. Like playing with food, you're the meat running off the plate, without realizing that the entire maze is the monster's dinner table. There's no slow burn, no buildup of suspense. Yet anxiety is constantly there because you know you're being chased. The monster will jump out at you at any given moment, so you're constantly anticipating the inevitable. It's like waiting for that jumpscare to hit, the rollercoaster to drop, but it doesn't arrive until your luck runs out. Like holding your breath or covering your eyes as a movie character painstakingly reaching out for the door, your time in IT STEALS will keep you suspended in fear.

There aren't many horror games that make me panic, anxious, or wary to keep playing. Yet IT STEALS ticks all the boxes as a genuinely scary horror game that manages so much while working with so little. It's an impressive indie horror gem that shines bright like the orbs in the maze, a beckon to look at a time where most games recycle ideas and use nostalgia to make a sale.

IT STEALS is available on Steam. Will you become the next trapped soul counting down the orbs to safety?
