Now that the Armored Core 6 release date is here, some of the more timid ones (us) are wondering whether we'll be able to get out of the starting area. PCGamesN Wednesday, August 23, 2023 11:37 AM What are the best Armored Core 6 core expansions? The new mech game has a lot of choice when it comes to giving players the machine of their dreams. Not all AC6 core expansions are created equal and, as far as we're concerned, one is much more useful than the others. Core expansions in Armored Core 6 are part of the game's core upgrades, so you'll need to make use of your OS Tuning chips to be able to purchase them. And you'd better believe that it was like Eldritch Christmas for me, because the 2007 original is quite possibly one of my favourite PC games of all time. I have a lot of love for Frogwares' Adventures of Sherlock Holmes series in general, but The Awakened is particularly special to me. Most obviously, it's a Sherlock Holmes/Cthulhu Mythos mash-up, which I consider to be the highest form of art in any medium. It's also part of what I consider to be the most glorious era in Frogwares' history. I love the loosely-formed trilogy made up of this game, Sherlock Holmes vs Arsène Lupin, and Sherlock Holmes vs Jack the Ripper — not just because all three games pit Holmes against an interesting variety of nemeses, but because they came at the peak of Frogwares' decision to play to their strengths and embrace the jank that they couldn't iron out. This teaser (which is actually for one of the later games in the series, but revisits an infamous glitch from The Awakened) demonstrates what I'm talking about: |

There aren't any cool menus in this trailer and my day is ruined. But the trailer also confirms that the game is due to launch on February 2nd, 2024, so we can gawk at the level-up screens soon. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Wednesday, August 23, 2023 11:00 AM How do you like your missiles? Do you prefer ones that fire straight up and then swoop down like birds of prey, or the kind that jet off to the sides, trapping the target in a pincer formation? How about a single missile that splits into a swarm of smaller missiles? Perhaps a zig-zagger that leaves a trail of explosive charges in its wake, detonating them like dynamite dominoes once it impacts? Well, whatever your fancy, Armored Core VI has a loadout for every occasion. With as many combinations as Dolly Parton's wardrobe, it's almost a scandal to equip the same gear twice. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Wednesday, August 23, 2023 10:32 AM Aperture Desk Job is full of unexplained details. Right at the start, as the camera pans down from the retrofuturist reception area to your lowly desk-based workstation, we see all manner of orange tubes, future Grady cores being trained to fool captcha image tests, a giant chicken, and what appears to be the origin point of Half-Life's ammo boxes being constructed. But there's also a pointed shot between the floorboards, showing us a pair of green praying mantises fumbling around over some electrical wiring and a rogue lightbulb. On its own, this mantis scene is no stranger than anything else we've witnessed in the last 30 seconds. But as your journey through Aperture goes on, things start getting really weird, really fast. Over the course of the next half hour, we'll see these mantises discover electricity, evolve into a society of tiny house-dwelling insects with their own carriages and courtship dances, and eventually a futuristic civilization who have mastered flying saucers and created an eternally self-sustaining power source. All in the same time it takes your supervisor core Grady to come up with a rudimentary prototype for what will eventually go on to become Portal's creepy turret. But you, yes you, CHARLIE, had to go and ruin it all by dropping the giant metal head of corporate mega-bastard Cave Johnson through the floorboards. What might those mantises have become, if they hadn't been so rudely crushed by your rampant disregard for their wellbeing? |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Wednesday, August 23, 2023 8:06 AM Action-horror sequel Alan Wake 2 showed up to last night's Gamescom festivities with a cryptic trailer (below) that showed the studio's signature Lynchian mystery, an upside-down New York, and some interesting live-action scenes. But references to Remedy's past games have been the big conversation driver, especially since the studio is building up a "Remedy Connected Universe." Creative director Sam Lake has now clarified that time-bending shooter Quantum Break and the Max Payne games aren't cool enough to join the Remedy-verse, while also breaking down their approach to these shared-world games. |

Siliconera Wednesday, August 23, 2023 2:30 PM Not one, but two Persona 5 Tactica trailers debuted on August 23, 2023. While one was the more focused Makoto "Queen" Niijima one, the other is more focused on gameplay. The gamescom 2023 video looks at footage from the game to offer a better idea of what to expect. It also offers a peek at Akechi and Kasumi in Persona 5 Tactica. This marks the second time we've a clip of both Akechi and Kasumi in Persona 5 Tactica, though its the first English one. A Nyahoo News announcement at the beginning of August 2023 appeared in Japan and revealed them. Both are DLC and in a Repaint Your Heart scenario. That brief segment showed Japanese footage of both characters in their civilian clothing when talking to Joker, then short peeks at them using attacks as Phantom Thieves. This latest clip also offers a look at Guernica's enemies that will appear in that scenario. You can see it start at the 2:13 mark of the new Persona 5 Tactica trailer below. The footage before it focuses on explaining and showcasing the tactical gameplay. Persona 5 Tactica will come out on November 17, 2023 for the PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC. Siliconera Wednesday, August 23, 2023 2:00 PM HoYoVerse announced a new Honkai: Star Rail chibi figure set which includes a trash can. However, the can isn't a a given. The six main figures in the set are Caelus, Stelle, Seele, Jing Yuan, Bronya, and Luocha. People only get the trash bonus one if they get the full ¥17,820 (~$123) set. The set is expected to ship in February 2024. Tokyo Figure is taking orders and ships worldwide with WorldShipping. All of the figures in this Honkai: Star Rail set are static ones. There are no additional face plates or posing options. A size and set of scale weren't announced, though they are diminuative ones that are only a few inches tall. Each one is of a five-star character immediately playable in the game. Their bases also have various accents. For example, the male Trailblazer avatar Caelus has planets on his base. The one for the female Trailblazer avatar Stelle also has Pom-Pom on it. Seele and Bronya's have Belobog's snow on theirs. Jing Yuan is sitting in his chair with a bird by his side. Luocha, an Abundance character, has plants growing on the tiles on his base. Here's a closer look at them: [gallery size="full" link="file" ids="979766,979765,979768,979769,979767,979770"]
[gallery columns="1" size="full" ids="979771" link="file"] The Honkai: Star Rail trash can figure does not have any base. However, instead of typical handles on the side, it has two metallic arms, with one giving a "thumbs up" sign. Here's a closer look at the trash can. [gallery columns="1" size="full" ids="979764" link="file"] For those unaware, the Trailblazer avatar's obsession over trash cans is a running joke in-game. On the planet Jarilo-VI, for example, examining each one prompts special text, can net rewards, and eventually unlocks an achievement. While there aren't a lot of figures based on the game yet, we've seen some. For example, Good Smile Company confirmed a Dan Heng Nendoroid is in development. HoYoVerse also already confirmed other Caelus and Stelle chibi figures. Honkai: Star Rail is available for PCs and mobile devices. A PS5 version will arrive in 2023. The Honkai: Star Rail chibi figure set will arrive in February 2024, but it only includes the seventh trash can one if you buy the full set. Siliconera Wednesday, August 23, 2023 1:30 PM A session at Computer Entertainment Developers Conference (CEDEC) on August 23, 2023 displayed various technologies that used on Pokemon in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. The presentation was hosted by Keiichi Maezawa, the director of CG technology at Game Freak. In order to differentiate these entries from previous titles visually, subsurface scattering, gel shading, highlights, a "damaged/dirty" system, and light dispersion technology was used. [Thanks, Game Watch!] Subsurface scattering was mostly used on Pokemon skin. Basically, it's a visual technique used to simulate scattered light bleeding in through a shadowed area. Larger Pokemon with dense bodies would be darker with more shadows, while smaller Pokemon with thin body parts used more light. These textures were also applied to the gel shading. In Quaxly's case, a soap bubble effect appeared. [caption id="attachment_979744" align="alignnone" width="1200"] Image via Game Freak[/caption] Miraidon, the legendary from Pokemon Violet, had a model that utilized a system in which shimmering particles were made to look as if they were moving three-dimensionally. To do this, the CG designers had to use a texture that specified a sense of depth while using a 4 x 4 pattern animation. [caption id="attachment_979748" align="alignnone" width="1200"] Image via Game Freak[/caption] Highlights were applied to the eyes of the Pokemon in the game. These were designed to move depending on the direction the camera was pointed in. The overworld lighting was also adjusted so that no matter what time of day it was in-game, the highlights would always show. [caption id="attachment_979749" align="alignnone" width="1200"] Image via Game Freak[/caption] The new Terastal phenomenon that occurs when Terastallizing Pokemon in the Paldea region visually reflects the cut of a jewel and the dispersion of light. For the "terastal" effect, the original models of the Pokemon went unchanged. Instead, a mesh was applied over the body that gave the effect. [caption id="attachment_979750" align="alignnone" width="1200"] Image via Game Freak[/caption] In addition, a system in which Pokemon become dirty over time was introduced. As players journeyed with characters, eventually they would get covered in dirt after taking damage. They would also visually show snow covering them in areas like the Glaseado Mountains. This visual effect was achieved by overlaying a pre-made render of the elements on the original models. [caption id="attachment_979753" align="alignnone" width="1200"] Image via Game Freak[/caption] Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are available worldwide on the Nintendo Switch. Siliconera Wednesday, August 23, 2023 11:01 AM Fire ravages a planet far flung at the edge of the universe, roiling over its surface and casting everything in a thick layer of ash. What many would consider to be a desolate hunk of rock, not capable of human life, is the center of conflict in a universe embroiled in an endless war thanks to corporate entities that feed on this perpetual strife. This planet, Rubicon, is where Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon is set, and where you assume the role of a mercenary unfit for a callsign. While the game begins with a fair enough amount of exposition to throw you into the thick of things, it serves as a perfect introduction to the series for newcomers, and is almost like a familiar, welcome embrace for those returning to the long dormant series. But what it is above all else is a triumphant show of finesse for FromSoftware in more ways than one. You hit the ground running and begin your first mission, a general tutorial on the hunt for the remains of a Core, to take the identity of its dead pilot. After shooting your way through a dilapidated tower and defeating an extremely well-armed helicopter, you find what you're looking and assume the role of Raven. Though while the world at large may call you Raven, Handler Walter continues to refer to you as 621. It is the callsign you bore at the beginning of the game, when you were nothing but nameless hunk of flesh strapped into your first Armored Core. This is who you remain at your core, regardless of what faction you choose to side with, giving the player some illusion of autonomy in the struggle for Rubicon. Because while you can ultimately decide the fate of the planet as it is effectively torn to pieces and mined for Coral, an invaluable resource to the dominating military corporations of the universe, you are a mercenary at the end of the day. You're beholden to your own whims and those of your employer, be they part of the military industrial complex or not. You're just a cog in the system, ground to dust in the military industrial complex that's stretched outward into the very depths of space. What this means for Rubicon is entirely up to you, as Armored Core VI is spread across five chapters. The total length of the game will vary vastly between players, mostly because boss fights can be particularly arduous if you're like me and refuse to adapt to the way Armored Core VI wants to be played. I will say that Armored Core VI left my hands hurting after some fights, and I did need to put my controller down to take breaks. Despite this, the game still felt fair, even during its most trying moments. I understood why I was dying, even if my resources were relatively limited in terms of healing (which can be upgraded, but only to some degree). Armored Core VI always gave me the options to change my weapons and modify my Armored Core before missions or before checkpoints if I had died. Additionally, you can sell parts for the same price you purchased them, which means less grinding to acquire new parts of your Core or even Arms, which is in-universe slang for your weapons. So you can experiment at a whim, with little to no repercussions, as the game wants you to play around with different builds. At times, it even demands it. Especially since Armored Core VI has three different types of damage you can experiment with through various Arms, with some more effective than others. There is one constant players should keep in mind, however, and that's stagger damage. Fights are a delicate balance between dealing damage and building your enemies stagger bar, and managing your own alongside your stamina. Since fights take place in a 3D environment, with you able to boost in the air, combat is incredibly dynamic. This is something you'll need to keep in mind when avoiding attacks that will build your stagger bar, effectively stunning you long enough to possibly kill you in a single hit. Staggering also opens up windows to deal massive damage to enemies, which is what you want to focus your own combos around, be it swiping at them with your pulse blade, shooting a flurry of rockets at them, or using high powered canons. That said, you can brute force fights. It's what I did, but left me slamming my head against a proverbial brick wall for upwards of three hours. Specifically, this happened in one fight that happened roughly halfway through, since I was determined to use the pulse blade and shotgun with no shield in combination with a light Frame. This meant I was extremely vulnerable and would die from almost every missile barrage shot my way. But once I was able to find my tempo and got some vague idea of what was killing me — even if it was my own hubris — I was able to overcome the challenge and continue my job as a hand for hire. On the more technical side of things, Armored Core VI's performance is incredible. I ran the game on a high-end machine touting a 3070Ti, and a gaming laptop with the minimum specs required. Naturally, the game looked phenomenal on the higher-end machine, with each spray of bullets from the muzzle of my rifle punctuated with pops of yellow light, but it looked just as good on my laptop. The UI was a little hard to read, admittedly, though I ended up hooking my laptop up to a 60 inch screen to see how it'd look. Again, I wasn't disappointed. The game ran perfectly with no frame drops, no lag of any kind, and no screen tearing. The only issue was that it was a bit slow to load at first on my laptop, but after that initial boot it was fine. There were also only one instance of crashing, but that was mostly because my machine is a bit old and my fans have given up the ghost. It's hard to find a single thing wrong with Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon. Its narrative, while more or less passively told through data logs you can find on missions and spoken at you through your Handler and by those under employ by various corporate and non-corporate factions, is spectacular. It takes a page out of some of the best anti-war sentiments found in the Gundam series, for example. The game isn't exactly subtle about it either, as resistance members on Rubicon call you a corporate dog and Core pilots from other military organizations hiss insults at you with their dying breath. The music is incredible, and I actually found myself turning down the in-game effects just to hear the hypnotic and sometimes oppressive electronic score. I can't wait for it to be available through streaming services, just so I can have it on repeat. And the game is gorgeous, even if time spent in areas are relatively limited due to the game's mission based structure. Armored Core VI may be the best game FromSoftware has made to date, building upon already solid foundations from Sekiro and Dark Souls and further innovating on the punishing combat the developer is known for. It's a complete product, with very little hitches in terms of performance even on lower end machines that meet its minimum requirements. With its interesting narrative and anti-war sentiment, it's a game that I'd recommend to anyone who enjoys the mecha genre or is a die-hard FromSoftware fan. Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon will come to the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, and PC on August 25, 2023. Siliconera Wednesday, August 23, 2023 10:30 AM The official social media account for Jujutsu Kaisen: Cursed Clash posted screenshots introducing Toge Inumaki. He will be one of the playable characters in the upcoming console fighting game. Koki Uchiyama will reprise his role as the character. Inumaki uses fast martial arts and powerful Cursed Speech. His Cursed Speech techniques will attack a large area at once, much like in the show itself. There aren't any videos or trailers showcasing his moves yet. However, we've seen bits and pieces of how Inumaki fights in both the Jujutsu Kaisen show and Jujutsu Kaisen 0 movie. Here's a closer look at Inumaki in JuJutsu Kaisen: Cursed Clash. Previous characters that Bandai Namco confirmed for Jujutsu Kaisen: Cursed Clash include Yuji, Megumi, Gojo, and Maki. Unlike his peers in the anime, Inumaki appears in fewer scenes showing him engaging in direct combat. This is due to how powerful his Cursed Speech is, and Inumaki has not had many scenes where he fights directly against curses. Koki Uchiyama voices Inumaki in the show and in Jujutsu Kaisen: Cursed Clash. Uchiyama's previous roles include Meruem in Hunter x Hunter 2011, Roxas in the Kingdom Hearts series, and Idia in Twisted Wonderland. Jujutsu Kaisen: Cursed Clash is in development for the PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, and Windows PC. You can watch the show on Crunchyroll, and Viz Media has licensed the manga. Siliconera Wednesday, August 23, 2023 10:30 AM Season 2 of Urusei Yatsura will start airing in January 2024, and ahead of that a new key visual appeared on the internet. It features characters both new and old surrounding Lum, who is smiling and winking in the middle. There is no new trailer for the second season yet. [Thanks, Comic Natalie!] [gallery columns="1" ids="979696" link="file"] Though we knew that season 2 would come out in 2024, it was unclear which anime season it would start in. However, so far, there is no specific release date as of yet. The first season aired on Fridays, so there's the chance that the second season will follow suit. David Production will likely give more details about that, as well as release a trailer, closer to January 2024. Urusei Yatsura originally ran from 1978 to 1978 in Weekly Shonen Sunday. An anime series for it aired in 1981, starring Toshio Furukawa as Ataru and Fumi Hirano as Lum. In 2022, David Production released a reboot of it, with Hiroshi Kamiya as Ataru and Sumire Uesaka as Lum. It is a romantic comedy in which Ataru (a human) accidentally proposes to Lum (an oni) and she ends up moving into his house upon falling in love with him. The first season of Urusei Yatsura (the 2022 reboot) is available on HIDIVE. Season 2 of Urusei Yatsura will likely appear on the streaming service as well when it starts airing in January 2024. Siliconera Wednesday, August 23, 2023 10:00 AM A new trailer for Persona 5 Tactica focuses on Queen, or Makoto Niijima. Players of the previous Persona 5 games should be more than familiar with her. Makoto is the student council president of Shujin High School, and is sort of the "older sister" figure for the rest of the Phantom Thieves. However, her honors student personality changes when she's in the Metaverse. https://twitter.com/p_kouhou/status/1694182677061017711 While still much more responsible and mature than some of the other members of the Phantom Thieves (such as Ryuji or Ann), Makoto as Queen is a force to be reckoned with. Her Fist of the North Star-like Phantom Thief outfit even garners a slightly fearful reaction from Kusakabe. She fights with her fists, and even Ryuji's scared of her. In the short trailer that focuses on her, she shows both her violent and cute side, such as her fear of horror movies and situations. Persona 5 Tactica is an upcoming spin-off of Persona 5. It will be a TRPG in the same vein as the Fire Emblem series, while keeping some of the mechanics from the original game. For instance, you can hide in the shadows and ambush enemies much like in the actual Persona 5. Persona 5 Tactica will come out on November 17, 2023 for the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, Xbox Game Pass, Nintendo Switch and Windows PC via Steam. You can read our preview of the game here. However, it will not play PlayStation Plus Premium streaming games. It also doesn't work with PSVR or PSVR 2 games. There's a teaser trailer for both Sony's new headset and earbuds. Siliconera Wednesday, August 23, 2023 9:00 AM In an interview with Famitsu, Atlus has confirmed that the Aeon Social Link will be present in Persona 3 Reload. This was the new Aigis Social Link that appeared in Persona 3 FES. Previously, it was unsure if content from FES would make an appearance in Reload. [Thanks, Famitsu!] During initial interviews with Atlus, the development team stated that Persona 3 Reload would remake the original game. While it would keep QoL updates from FES and Portable, it would not have any content from them. At the time, this statement seemed to encompass the Aigis Social Link, which only appeared from FES. However, Atlus had made is abundantly clear that The Answer and the female protagonist would not appear in the game at this point in time. In the same interview, Atlus stated that it wanted players to focus on Aigis in battle. This is because she is the only artificial human in the party, and her inhuman nature stands out in her combat animations. It also wants players to pay attention to her in-game model. Though fans might be familiar with how she looks like with her model to scale (as opposed to the slightly chibified models from the original game), the team wanted her to look special even when she is just standing there. Persona 3 Reload will come out on February 2, 2024 for the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, Xbox Game Pass, and Windows PC via Steam. You can read our preview of the game here.
