PCGamesN Friday, March 29, 2024 6:49 PM Sometimes, a game comes out of nowhere and rockets up the charts on Steam. The latest example of this is Holo X Break, a free beat 'em up based on Japanese virtual YouTuber agency Hololive Production. Launched today, the game is already doing very well on Valve's platform thanks to its mix of side scrolling action that hearkens back to classic arcade games and colorful anime style aesthetics, not dissimilar from Persona 3 Reload, Genshin Impact, and, in turns, Sea of Stars. It doesn't hurt either that it's completely free to play. Continue reading New anime multiplayer game is blowing up on Steam and available free |

It seems like players agree that the game's premise is enticing, as Outpost has attracted a strong enough user base to trend on Steam, but, unfortunately, a lot of those same players have been leaving fairly disappointed reviews after checking it out. Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Friday, March 29, 2024 2:48 PM TimeSplitters Rewind, a fan-made remake of the zany shooters' multiplayer in a single game, might well represent the last gasp of the beloved first-person shooter franchise following the closure of resurrected original developers Free Radical - who were working on their own TimeSplitters reboot - at the end of last year. With over a decade of work already invested in the fan project, however, the team have now released a call for help to overcome development hurdles caused by the ongoing troubled state of the games industry. |

Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Friday, March 29, 2024 1:00 PM It's been a while since I played a game as effortlessly cool as Underdogs. This VR mech-fighting game has you pilot a giant mechanical gorilla, pummelling robots and human-controlled mechs with arms the length of lorries in grungy, trap-filled arenas. The combat alone is chest-thumpingly good, but Underdogs couples it with a fantastically evocative cyberpunk setting, and a smartly implemented rogue-like structure. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Friday, March 29, 2024 1:00 PM Windowkill is the most inventive arcade shooter I've played for years. It's twin-stick shooting in a tiny window that temporarily expands in that direction when you shoot its edges. You have to actively manage and maintain the play space itself for that to even be an option. Soon static monsters appear in their own isolated windows you'll have to shoot your way towards (their attacks can cross the void between), and before long there are the horrible hateful little blue bastards who sit there passively, soaking up shots and never attacking but actively pulling the edges of the window towards them. It's a clever and great little thing and I sort of hate it as much as I like it. |

Stellar Blade is a game that's constantly shifted my expectations the more I've learned about it. Now that I've gotten my hands on its demo, I noticed influences I did not expect.
When the game was originally doing the rounds as Project Eve, its trailers suggested a fast-paced, Bayonetta-style, sci-fi romp. Then its presence earlier in 2024 at Sony's State of Play presentation showed an open world that evoked NieR: Automata. This influence was definitely present in the demo too, with an inevitably traumatic premise about ass-kicking women from space attempting to save an embattled humanity, plus a soundtrack that sounds like rave remixes of Keiichi Okabe's work. However, what the demo also revealed was how much the game is a stealth Soulslike.
It's not quite a full Soulslike though. Death feels much less punishing, and the combat system is a lot flashier than the genre usually provides. It feels like Shift Up wanted to dip their toes into the genre without fully committing to it. It's a Souls-lite then. And as someone who was looking forward to Stellar Blade but also has previously never been able to get into that genre, I think they got the balance exactly where I like it.
Combat is tricky, less button-mashy than I was initially expecting. Enemies can be punishing if you let them, with occasional surprise attack chains and the ability to knock off significant damage. Even the most basic of enemy can stomp you if you're not prepared. Timings for dodging and blocking are tight, which took a while to get used to. This is a game that encourages mastery of its systems or else you will struggle.
However, combat at this stage in the game felt limited. You have your standard attack and a heavy attack, and you can string combos out of them. But it's often difficult to get long combos out due to the brutality of the enemies, and there's little else adding to the combat. The demo featured two Beta Energy moves that needed time to recharge after use. While they were often useful, the charge discouraged a lot of their use plus they were often just a singular big attack.
That said, there were signs that these elements could grow into something significant in the final game. The skill upgrades hinted at improvements to these skills, as well as faster recharge times, which hopefully will help them all live up to their potential in later parts of the game.
Evidence of how much the moves on offer are likely to improve in the final game came with a skill named Blink. I unlocked this shortly before the demo's final boss encounter, and it was a game changer. Up until this point, a few enemies had hit me hard with a massive desperate attack. While these attacks were possible to dodge, the timing window was tricky to nail. Blink is a move designed to counter these specific attacks, allowing Eve to teleport herself behind the enemy at the right time, dodging the attack and opening them up to a huge combo. Getting to throw it out constantly in the boss fight was incredibly satisfying, and hopefully more moves like this will be added to Eve's arsenal as the game progresses.
Stellar Blade isn't just about combat though. This is a semi open world game, with a ruined planet to explore. The environments are gorgeous and interesting to explore. The demo was mostly centered on a single city street full of abandoned pharmacies and bus stations, but even within this limited space, it was clear a lot of care was put into making these areas worth exploring. The promises of more expansive environments in the game's trailers has me excited if they're as well-crafted as this small space was.
The climbing aspects of the game were less impressive, however. There were plenty of areas where you could climb around on walls using customary marked handholds, although some of these were hard to spot. In other cases, places that looked climbable were not. Even the act of traversal was lacking, as Eve's slow speed felt at odds with the swinging animation. I'm a fan of games with fluid movement mechanics, so this felt unpleasantly sluggish to me.
That said, Stellar Blade clearly has a lot to offer. The combat has a solid foundation and there's enough mechanical complexity hinted at that should evolve it into something truly great over the course of the game. Although whether its story will live up to the heights it's clearly set with its obvious Nier Automata influence remains to be seen.
Stellar Blade will release for PS5 on April 26, 2024.

Every year, Good Smile Company asks for artists to submit designs for the new Hatsune Miku "Snow Miku" Nendoroid, and the 2025 one is now open. People have until April 8, 2024 to vote once for one of the six options on the official site.
The theme for 2025 is "Glittering Snow Material." Each of the outfits is designed to highlight a sparkling effect. This means we have designs like Nimoji's miner with horned hat and huge hammer, as well as RAOOO's with a stained glass sort of design. In each case, the artist submitted outfits for both Miku and the rabbit mascot Yukine that always accompanies her for these figures.
Here are all six of the Snow Miku 2025 outfit design options in the poll for the next Nendoroid.
It will likely be a few months before we learn which design "wins" for this year and see a prototype. For example, the Snow Miku 2024 Nendoroid appeared in August 2023. The website for her for that year launched in September 2023. The 2024 design was a Winter Delicacy version that made her look like a ryokan maid working at an inn and serving food.
People can vote for the Snow Miku 2025 Nendoroid until April 8, 2024.

Pepper Grinder is a game that involves a fun concept, but that also isn't the most comfortable to play. Fortunately, this is a situation where being short and sweet works in its favor, so it's easier to overlook a little awkwardness.
Pepper got a lot of treasure! Except then her ship crashed on an island. Everything she worked for was stolen. However, upon discovering the thieves, she also happened upon a Grinder drill. She then must go through four areas recollecting all her cash and doling out revenge while digging through terrain, stone, slime, and other substances.
Pepper Grinder is game about momentum and flow. Each stage tasks you with digging through substances to collect gems, defeat enemies, get around obstacles and hazards, and reach the end so you can hoist the flag and show you conquered the area. This means knowing when to dig through the dirt, getting the correct angles, boosting at the proper times, and ensuring you are avoiding enemies or death. There are multiple save spots in levels, so there isn't a ton of backtracking if you do falter. Plus if you get the timing right, it definitely feels satisfying to speed through a stage.
I think my biggest issue with Pepper Grinder comes down to accessibility. I feel pretty fortunate that I've spent about 10-12 hours every Monday through Friday typing at a computer and playing games for at least an hour most evenings without getting carpel tunnel syndrome or any other issues. However, I could not play this game for more than an hour at a time. The need to constantly be pressing the right trigger, boosting with one button, or swapping to another to use the drill as a grappling hood would get to be too much for me.
Even though you can remap controls and you can lay off of the drilling button when boring through substances, it's too intense. Couple that with some levels after the ones in the first area introducing situations that require the utmost precision and repetition until you get the muscle memory and movements down, and there were times it stopped being fun for me.
Fortunately, Pepper Grinder is also an incredibly short game. As in you'll probably finish it in about three hours unless you're looking to buy all the gold keys for extra levels or do some coin and sticker collecting. There are four worlds with a handful of levels and boss fight in each one, as well as a Curiosity Shop with each in each area. So even if there is a moment that gets a little too taxing, know that once you've cleared that hurdle it is done for good and you're on to the next thing and challenge. I'd say the brevity works in its favor. I could see this being a premise that could wear thin eventually, and this stops that from happening.
Pepper Grinder is a Devolver Digital game with a good idea that generally works well. There are some moments that might feel a bit much, either due to the necessary inputs or a certain stretch of an area. Still, it all flows very well and it never wears out its welcome.
Pepper Grinder is available for the Nintendo Switch and PC.

The developers of Hololive fan-game Holo X Break announced that the game launched without online multiplayer. In a message posted to social media, the developers apologized and promised to add the feature at some time in the future.
The message explained that the intricacies of implementing online multiplayer were too much for the team to solve before the release date of March 29, 2024. However, the team decided to release the game in an offline state, rather than push the release back entirely. Holo X Break will feature local co-op however, and online play can be simulated using Steam's Remote Play Together feature, which the developers state they used frequently for testing purposes.
The game istelf, which was announced earlier this month and launched today, is a side-scrolling beat-em-up similar to River City Girls and inspired by Little Fighters 2. The chief developer Kay Yu also previously created Holocure and has worked as an animator on several Hololive music videos as well as several non-Hololive related anime series like Onii-chan wa Oshimai! and Mushoku Tensei.
You can read the message from the Holo X Break developers in Japanese here, or in English via the tweet below:
Alongside Holo X Break, Cover Corp. also recently announced 2 more games would be released under the Holo Indie label: Wowowow Korone Box and Miko in Maguma. This is in addition to Idol Showdown, which Cover announced would be joining the label earlier in the month.
Holo X Break is immediately available for PC via Steam, with online multiplayer to be added in a later update.
