The Texas Chainsaw Massacre blows up with free Steam weekend, update

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre videogame seemed, initially, like it might not be able to attract much of an audience. Launching last summer, it followed in the bloody footprints of similar horror multiplayer games, like Dead By Daylight, Friday the 13th: The Game, Predator: Hunting Grounds, and Evil Dead: The Game. Thanks to solid design choices and regular updates, though, TCM has managed to survive, and, with the launch of its new update and a free weekend, it's currently drawing in a lot of new players on Steam.

Dragon's Dogma 2 has dropped its first update, addressing one of the fantasy action-RPG's most baffling decisions - the inability to start a new game once you've begun your first adventure - and letting you acquire a home of your own earlier, providing a reliable place to rest and save. There are some other small tweaks too, while Capcom dare to raise the question about future DLC in the wake of the game's controversial microtransactions.

It's been a while since I played a game as effortlessly cool as Underdogs. This VR mech-fighting game has you pilot a giant mechanical gorilla, pummelling robots and human-controlled mechs with arms the length of lorries in grungy, trap-filled arenas. The combat alone is chest-thumpingly good, but Underdogs couples it with a fantastically evocative cyberpunk setting, and a smartly implemented rogue-like structure.

Windowkill is the most inventive arcade shooter I've played for years.

It's twin-stick shooting in a tiny window that temporarily expands in that direction when you shoot its edges. You have to actively manage and maintain the play space itself for that to even be an option. Soon static monsters appear in their own isolated windows you'll have to shoot your way towards (their attacks can cross the void between), and before long there are the horrible hateful little blue bastards who sit there passively, soaking up shots and never attacking but actively pulling the edges of the window towards them.

It's a clever and great little thing and I sort of hate it as much as I like it.

So, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, eh? I liked it a lot. 150 hours a lot. I big cried at least twice and welled up, much like a well, many other times. As much as I'd like to wax emotional about the plot and characters in an endless lifestream-of-consciousness ramble, articles need both headlines and subjects (truly an act of conspiratorial violence targeted at my personal dadaist instincts). So, let's talk about just the minigames, because I think they're wonderful for all sort of reasons that might not be immediately apparent. Naturally, big spoiler potential ahead if, like me, you consider everything you haven't experienced in the RPG game a spoiler.

I think one of OG Final Fantasy's 7 best tricks is how it doesn't just dish out its strangest distractions as a palette cleanser to the main meal of its action and drama, but actively works them in as an indispensable part of the menu. It also does this all without a shred of shame or self-consciousness, resulting in a cinematic video game with no inner turmoil or resentment toward either part of that equation - a characteristic I feel is suffered from by many of the games for which FF7 lead the way. Take the Gold Saucer. It's an excuse to dick around and ride motorbikes, sure, but it's also an essential story beat while the party takes time to relax and enjoy each other's company away from the stress of travel and battle.

I think its reasonable to say that the term 'fetch quest' is well passed the point of being a neutral descriptor and has moved firmly into the realm of full pejorative. You won't see many games tout 'epic fetch quests' on their Steam Page, and you're much more likely to hear the term lodged between the words 'not a bloody' and 'again', like two slices of exasperation-enriched bread stuffed with a shit-tier filling. Cucumber, perhaps. Not so, at least not for me, when it comes to Dragon's Dogma 2. The action RPG game has more or less solved the fetch quest problem. All it took, it turns out, was some interesting world design.

Holo X Break Online Multiplayer

The developers of Hololive fan-game Holo X Break announced that the game launched without online multiplayer. In a message posted to social media, the developers apologized and promised to add the feature at some time in the future.

The message explained that the intricacies of implementing online multiplayer were too much for the team to solve before the release date of March 29, 2024. However, the team decided to release the game in an offline state, rather than push the release back entirely. Holo X Break will feature local co-op however, and online play can be simulated using Steam's Remote Play Together feature, which the developers state they used frequently for testing purposes.

The game istelf, which was announced earlier this month and launched today, is a side-scrolling beat-em-up similar to River City Girls and inspired by Little Fighters 2. The chief developer Kay Yu also previously created Holocure and has worked as an animator on several Hololive music videos as well as several non-Hololive related anime series like Onii-chan wa Oshimai! and Mushoku Tensei.

You can read the message from the Holo X Break developers in Japanese here, or in English via the tweet below:

https://twitter.com/HoloCureGame/status/1773418302569910277

Alongside Holo X Break, Cover Corp. also recently announced 2 more games would be released under the Holo Indie label: Wowowow Korone Box and Miko in Maguma. This is in addition to Idol Showdown, which Cover announced would be joining the label earlier in the month.

Holo X Break is immediately available for PC via Steam, with online multiplayer to be added in a later update.

Octopath Traveler 2 16-bit arrangements album

Square Enix released the first standalone arrangement album for Octopath Traveler 2, and it features 16-bit renditions for some of the game's tracks. The Octopath Traveler II 16-Bit Arrangements album is now available in Japan with a tax-inclusive price tag of ¥2,750 (~$18).

This album features 16-bit versions of eight tracks from Octopath Traveler 2, and it will let the listener imagine how the game would sound like if it appeared in the SNES era. The game's composer Yasunori Isshiki also personally supervised the arrangements.

Here is the complete list of Octopath Traveler 2 tracks that received 16-bit renditions in this album:

  1. "Partitio, the Merchant"
  2. "Toto'haha"
  3. "Normal Battle I"
  4. "Ku, Land of the Scarlet Sunset"
  5. "Critical Clash II"
  6. "Ruins Immemorial"
  7. "At Your Back"
  8. "Fierce Confrontation"

In the Japanese press release, Square Enix hinted that it will also make this album available on its North American and European web stores. The North American Square Enix Store did have a listing for a similar 16-bit arrangement album for the first game, which was released in 2019. However, it has since sold all of its stocks without any further news about restocks.

The Octopath Traveler II 16-Bit Arrangements album is now available for purchase in Japan. The original video game is readily available worldwide on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC. Square Enix has also announced plans to release the game on Xbox One and Xbox Series X in 2024.

FFXIV Screenshots Show Off FFXVI Event Items

On April 2, 2024, a FFXVI crossover is coming to FFXIV, and Square Enix shared an array of screenshots so people know what to expect. In addition to showing off the NPC tied to the quest, so you know who to look for, it showed how the Clive and Torgal-inspired rewards will appear in-game.

First, the Neophyte Adventurer is who you need to look for to take on "A Land on Fire." This person will be at X: 8.8 and Y: 9.8 at Ul'dah Steps of Nald. You'll want to look for a Hyur with blonde hair who is wearing a white outfit with brown trim and gloves.

Here's this person you need to meet:

The Clive-inspired items are going to be the Metian Chausses for pants, a pair of Metian Gauntlets, Metian Sollerets shows, and Metian Vest. The screenshot Square Enix shared for it highlighted the fact that someone can dye it. The default appearance is black with red accents. The image showed how it will look if someone changes it to black, blue, or white.

Here are those other extra colors:

Finally, the last batch of FFXIV FFXVI event screenshots offer some context to show how the Mount and Minion versions of Torgal look in-game. This allows someone to see exactly how big (and small) each one is.

Final Fantasy XIV is available for the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC, Final Fantasy XVI is available on the PS5 and eventually PC, and the FFXVI FFXIV event starts on April 2, 2024.

Dragon's Dogma 2 Patch

Capcom released a patch for Dragon's Dogma 2 on PC and PS5 on March 29, 2024, with the Xbox Series X set to get the update in a few days. As previously reported, the patch will add the option to start a new game more easily and make some amenities easier to access.

As well as fixing some text display issues, the biggest part of the update will be adding an option to start a new game even when save data already exists. While it was possible previously, it required manually deleting save data in the game files.

Other changes include making it easier to obtain a house in major cities and increasing the number of Art of Metamorphosis items available from 2 to 99. This item is what lets players edit the appearance of their character or Pawn, and the previous limit drew criticism due to the item also being sold for real money.

Playstation players will additionally gain the option to toggle motion blur and ray tracing effects in the options menu, or to add a 30 FPS cap. Steam users, meanwhile, received some fixes for display issues including when using the DLSS super resolution mode.

You can find the patch notes from the official website below:

[PlayStation®5 / Steam]

+ Adding the option to start a new game when save data already exists.

+ Changing the number of "Art of Metamorphosis" items available at Pawn Guilds in the game to 99.

+ Making the quest that allows players to acquire their own dwelling (where they can save and rest) available earlier in the game.

+ Miscellaneous text display issues.

+ Miscellaneous bug fixes.

[PlayStation®5]

+ Adding the option* to switch Motion Blur on/off in Options.

+ Adding the option* to switch Ray Tracing on/off in Options.

+ Adding the option to set Frame Rate at Max 30fps in Options

[Steam]

+ Improving quality when DLSS SUPER RESOLUTION is enabled.

+ Fixing an issue related to the display of models under some specific settings.

Before launch, director Hideaki Itsuno revealed that the meat scene in the game's cooking scenes was in fact real, rather than CGI. And if you're playing the game, you can also browse Siliconera's selection of guides here.

The Dragon's Dogma 2 patch is immediately available for the PC, PS5, and it will come to Xbox Series X/S soon. The game itself is immediately available for all 3 platforms.

Wuthering Waves

Wuthering Waves now has a confirmed release date. According to developers Kuro, it will be launching on May 22, 2024 for iOS, Android and the Epic Games Store.

https://twitter.com/Wuthering_Waves/status/1773671444767002757

Wuthering Waves is an open-world action RPG from the developers of Punishing Grey Raven. Set in a desolate world from an event known as The Lament, you play as a mysterious character known only as "Rover". The game features fast-paced real-time combat and will allow enemy abilities to be gained through the Echo system. The player will also team up with party members known as Resonators, ten of whom are currently confirmed via the official site.

Players can pre-register for Wuthering Waves right now ahead of its release date. Currently, 16 million players have pre-registered, unlocking Shell Credits, Advanced Resonance Potions and Astrite for all new players when the game releases. Additional goals for 20 million and 30 million pre-registrations have yet to be reached.

Two closed betas have already taken place for Wuthering Waves. The first took place in April 2023, while a second just completed in March 2024. Kuro shared details of the changes they've made as a result of the recent beta, including gameplay adjustments and improvements to the game's sound design. The developers also confirmed that voiceovers in English, Japanese and Korean are being worked on.

Wuthering Waves will release for PC and mobile devices on May 22, 2024.

Blue Reflection Sun shutting down in May 2024

Koei Tecmo and Gust announced that they will shut down Blue Reflection: Sun on May 30, 2024, at noon JST. The companies have immediately disabled all microtransaction features in the free-to-play game. The development team will release the last two cases by April 2024 so players will have about a month to see the story's conclusion. [Thanks, 4Gamer.]

While the companies made the announcement on the game's official website, it may not be viewable worldwide due to regional restrictions. However, they also published a tweet on the game's official X account, which is available to view right below:

https://twitter.com/BRSUN_game/status/1773606760546210050

Gust established Sun as one of the three multimedia projects that together constitute the continuation of the 2017 RPG title Blue Reflection. The other two are the anime show Blue Reflection: Ray and the console game Blue Reflection: Tie—also known in the West as Blue Reflection: Second Light.

Both Ray and Second Light appeared worldwide in 2021 through media sources that will remain accessible in the long term. Blue Reflection: Sun officially launched on February 21, 2023. Therefore, the game had only barely made it through the first anniversary when Koei Tecmo announced its closure.

The development did not announce any plans to make a permanent offline archive version in this announcement, so existing players may have no methods to relive memories of the online-exclusive game.

Blue Reflection: Sun is available in Japan on iOS and Android mobile devices, as well as PC via DMM Games, until May 30, 2024.

Tekken 8 Eddy Gordo DLC Release Date Revealed

Bandai Namco announced the Tekken 8 Eddy Gordo release date. During the Tekken Talk Live presentation on March 29, 2024, the team announced he'll appear on April 4, 2024 and shared a trailer highlighting him.

Eddy is a fighter who's appeared in multiple entries and spin-offs. For example, he debuted in Tekken 3 and also showed up in the Tekken Tag Tournament titles. His official trailer begins with him playing a Brazilian berimbau, before declaring he'll show the strength of capoeira.

Here's the new footage of him fighting folks like Azucena and Nina.

And in case you want to watch the full showcase with members of the development team discussing Eddy, you can see that below:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gQkJX2pxvW0&ab_channel=BandaiNamcoEsports

Eddy isn't the only Tekken 8 update we'll end up seeing. It looks like there will be another wave of account suspensions in the future. The official social media account announced a wave of temporary and indefinite ones for the end of March 2024. Those focused on people who were breaking the End User License Agreement to cheat or harass other players. The announcement said those will happen "after April," so we might not see them occur until May 2024.

Tekken 8 is available for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC, and the Eddy Gordo DLC release date is April 4, 2024.

yu-gi-oh jaden yusei nendoroids

Good Smile Company has opened up pre-orders for Nendoroids of Yusei and Jaden (Judai) from Yu-Gi-Oh 5D's and Yu-Gi-Oh GX, respectively. Pre-orders for both of them will end on May 8, 2024.

Both Nendoroids cost 6600 JPY in the Japanese store. They'll ship out in August 2024 if you live in Japan. Meanwhile, if you live in North America, they'll cost $40.99 each. You'll be able to get them some time in Q1 2025. As a reminder, due to licensing restrictions, Good Smile Company will only ship them to Canada and the United States, so if you don't live in North America, you'll need to use a proxy service of some kind.

The Yusei Nendoroid comes with three face plates—a serious expression, a battle expression, and a satisfied expression. He'll come with his Duel Disk, of course, as well as his cards. Yusei will also come with milk, which is a reference to an oft-memed line he uttered during the Crash Town arc. Jaden will also come with similar face plates, as well as cards and a Duel Disk for his optional parts. However, Jaden will also have his Winged Kuriboh friend with him. This Jaden is the version from the end of the series, and you can tell from both his hairstyle and his heterochromia.

The Yu-Gi-Oh Yusei and Jaden (Judai) Nendoroids are readily available for pre-order via Good Smile Company. Other Yu-Gi-Oh Nendoroids Good Smile Company released in the past includes one of Dark Magician Girl.

NieR Automata Nendoroid Dolls of 2B and 9S

Good Smile Company has opened pre-orders for its upcoming Nendoroid Dolls of 2B and 9S from NieR: Automata. People can place their orders on Good Smile Online Shop U.S. if they reside in North America, or the Japanese international storefront if they are living elsewhere worldwide.

2B's Nendoroid Doll will be available at ¥12,500 / $76.99. Meanwhile, 9S' doll will have a slightly lower price tag at ¥11,800 / $72.99. The international web store is also exclusively selling 2B and 9S' outfit sets separately at ¥6,900 (~$45.60) each.

Here are some of the sample images for both NieR: Automata Nendoroid Dolls:

Good Smile Company had previously released Nendoroid figures of 2B and 9S around the early 2020s. But while the figures had separate release windows—9S' figure was revealed and released later than 2B's—the dolls for both characters will appear simultaneously. The Nendoroid Doll line distinguishes itself from the long-running chibi action figure series by featuring taller body proportions with swappable outfits.

The pre-order window for the NieR: Automata Nendoroid Dolls of 2B and 9S will close on April 24, 2024. The finished products will be available in Japan in October 2024 and in North America in Q1 2025.

oxford isekai

The Oxford English Dictionary has added several Japanese words to it, such as mangaka and isekai. You can check out the entire list of newly-added words, including non-Japanese ones, via the official OED website.

Some of the words are ones that normal people (here meaning those who have an entry-level knowledge of Japanese pop culture and media) use on the daily. For example, there are lots of Japanese or Asian restaurants that offer katsu and such. Below is the list of new Japanese and anime-related words in the OED, as well as links to their definitions. As a reminder, some words will require an OED subscription to see the definition.

According to the OED, isekai is "a Japanese genre of science or fantasy fiction featuring a protagonist who is transported to or reincarnated in a different, strange, or unfamiliar world; frequently used as a modifier." Ever since the emergence of the Truck-kun meme in 2015, English anime fans have used "isekai" as a verb or a genre descriptor. With more and more isekai content these days, it stands to reason that it would start entering the public "normie" consciousness.

You can check out the entire list of new words in the OED via the official website.

Petrified Medusa In Dragon's Dogma 2Many have been turned to stone by the gaze of a Medusa in Dragon's Dogma 2. But maybe you can be the one to turn a Medusa to stone thanks to the Daughter of the Evening Shield. It'll be like one of those Legends. How to get the Daughter of the Evening Shield in Dragon's Dogma 2 Screenshot: PC Invasion The Daughter of the Evening Shield has a vague description that hints at its use of reflecting back the power of their foes. This will be the shield you need to use to reflect back a Medusa's gaze to petrify it. This shield is stashed away in the depths of the Vernworth Vault, which is a pain to get into. First things first, head over to the Vernworth Vault. Go into the audience chamber and take the second left into a channel. Pass through until the end. You can follow the markers I've placed to show where to go on the map below. Screenshot: PC Invasion At the bottom of the tunnel you'll be walking down is the vault – and also...

All Riddler Trophy Locations In Suicide Squad Kill The Justice LeagueFinding all the Riddler riddles and time trials is easy in Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League compared to finding all the Riddler Trophies. Have no fear! This guide will show you the location of every Riddler Trophy in Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. A few tips before you go hunting: if the Riddler Trophy is out of reach, you can shoot it to bring it down. There isn't a way to get a hint at their locations, but once you get close enough to a Riddler Trophy, it appears on your map to help you pinpoint it.      Best Balatro seeds listBalatro is a poker roguelike that lets you test your luck and strategy as you battle increasingly harder Blinds. While the game is randomized every time, you can input a seed that lets you customize your experience like you can in other randomly generated games. How to play a Seeded run in Balatro To input a seed in Balatro and change your run to match someone else's, click the Seeded Run button at the bottom of the menu when starting a new run. It's to the left of the Play button. This will disable all unlocks and discoveries, but you'll get access to some of the craziest shops and item combinations that Balatro players have discovered. Best Balatro Seeds The main reason you'd want to use a certain Balatro seed is to guarantee that you'll find certain bonus cards in shops between rounds.      Gap In Dragon's Dogma 2As you traverse the lands in Dragon's Dogma 2, you'll have to stick to the meandering roads as lakes keep jutting into your path. One player, however, used the Thief skills to prolong their fall and land safely on the other side. Falling with style in Dragon's Dogma 2 BroshiOmnominous, a Reddit user, shared a clip of them managing to leap over a pretty wide waterfall where a bridge had collapsed, landing on the other side. Cool thief movement tech! byu/BroshiOmnominous inDragonsDogma The bodies of water in Dragon's Dogma 2 are a nightmare, as there's no way to cross them unless a bridge is nearby. And if that gets destroyed, then you'll have to take the long way around. Although the adventure is a huge attraction to the game, sometimes you just want to get to your destination without having to fight an armada of Goblins because a river cuts into your path. Not many vocations allow for this sort of stunt, and it is difficult to pu...
