Good Smile Company has announced several new upcoming merchandise and figures, including a Nendoroid of Akechi of Persona 5 Royal in his school uniform. There is no information on when to expect him.
The upcoming Akechi (Uniform Version) Nendoroid depicts him in his winter uniform, and we can see some of the parts that it'll come with. One of the optional parts is his briefcase, and one of his expressions is a smiling one. Previously, the only version of a Persona 5 Akechi Nendoroid that existed depicted him in his Crow (Prince) outfit. Good Smile Company didn't make Uniform Versions of every other playable character though, so this wasn't unusual.
Good Smile Company revealed the Akechi Nendoroid as part of the Nendoroid Funs 2024 Autumn announcements. You can watch the full video here:
Other Nendoroids that Good Smile Company announced include: Ranma (Ranma ½), Momo and Okarun (Dandadan), Kaneki (Tokyo Ghoul), the Forger family in their casual clothing (Spy x Family), and Dorothy and Viper (Nikke: Goddess of Victory). These figures are all at different stages of development. For example, we only have the concept art for the Akechi Nendoroid. Meanwhile the Momo (Dandadan) Nendoroid looks like it's almost ready for release.
Persona 5 Royal is readily available on the PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, and Windows PC. The Persona 5 Royal Akechi (Uniform Version) Nendoroid is in production and more information on its release window, as well as price, will appear in the future.

HoYoVerse will give people a free standard 5-star of their choice if they log in at any time between Honkai: Star Rail Version 2.7 to the end of Version 3.2. This is the perfect opportunity to either get Eidolons for your favorite character, or to complete your collection.
As a reminder, here is the list of 5-star standard characters:
Personally, if you're unsure of which Honkai: Star Rail 5-star to receive for free, I recommend either Himeko or Bronya. While some characters may become more valuable depending on new mechanics or units HoYoVerse may introduce in the future, Bronya's universal kit makes her a mainstay on most teams. Even over a year since launch, you can't really go wrong with Bronya if you lack some of the more powerful support characters. Himeko has seen a lot more usage ever since HoYoVerse added new modes like Pure Fiction, as well as new potential builds like Break Effect.
This is not the first time that HoYoVerse gave away a free character. Back in December 2023, it offered a copy of Dr. Ratio for free. He was available to claim between Version 1.6 and Version 2.1, and you simply needed to log in to get him.
Honkai: Star Rail is readily available on the PS5, Windows PC, and mobile devices.

Just before the turn of the millennium, a workhorse studio named KID took a chance on creating an original visual novel game for the PlayStation after years of mainly working on action games and PC game ports to consoles. Memories Off was a coming-of-age romance story with surprising depth to its characters. It broke a few unstated rules of the genre, and perhaps in part because of that it found an audience. KID spent the next several years making follow-ups to Memories Off along with other assorted visual novels, none of which were localized because… well, visual novels tended not to be localized back then.
KID collapsed in 2006, with its former staff scattering to various corners of the Japanese games industry. Some key members ended up at MAGES, a developer mainly known for visual novel games like Steins;Gate. As for KID's intellectual property, it bounced around from company to company until it ended up with MAGES. Oh hey, that's convenient. As the star of the package, Memories Off wasn't on the bench long. MAGES picked it up almost immediately, producing more sequels and spin-offs. The franchise seemed to largely peter out as the Science Adventure series rose up on the back of the popularity of Steins;Gate.
SINce Memories: Off the Starry Sky is a spin-off of the main series. Its story largely stands alone, but fans of the previous games should be able to spot a number of connections as they make their way through. In an unexpected move, this installment was picked up for localization by PQube. This marks the first time the series has seen an official English release. On paper, it makes a lot of sense for this game to take that role. It's the newest release after all, and its story requires absolutely no knowledge of prior games to enjoy.
In practice, I really wonder if this is the best introduction to Memories Off. It certainly carries a lot of the qualities of those beloved early games. It too is a coming-of-age romance story that deals with loss, grief, and acceptance. The protagonist, Junya, is an actual character rather than a mere player stand-in. The heroines might seem like tropes at first, but they almost all defy those expectations over the course of their respective routes. The game's pace is extremely slow, particularly in the opening handful of hours as it sets up all of its pieces. The real punch of a Memories Off game comes in the pay-off for all of that, though. It's in that respect where I'm not sure Off the Starry Sky does what it needs to.
SINce Memories: Off the Starry Sky follows the story of Junya Mizumoto, a young university student who works part-time at his family's handyman business. One year before the start of the game, he was involved in a car accident while riding with his older brother, Takaya. While he survived, Takaya did not. On top of that, Junya's memories of the incident seem to have been mostly lost outside of a few flashes here and there. What really happened that day? The answer to this serves as the main mystery for the story, and one that gets more fully explained in some routes than others.
Junya's brother was something of a local hero in the town of Sumisora, and Junya constantly wrestles with survivor's guilt as a result. He feels he can't possibly measure up to his brother, and that he should have died instead. This inner conflict is another aspect that gets explored to varying degrees depending on which route you opt to follow, but it's one whose resolution I wasn't terribly satisfied with after all was said and done. Junya's spotty memories make him an unreliable narrator, but even with that I feel like some of the jumps his character makes could have been set up better.
Off the Starry Sky is like that across the board, though. It feels like almost every aspect of its is a few steps away from being great, but instead has to settle for middling to decent. What's missing from each element isn't even consistent, which makes for a frustrating aftertaste. Some things are over-explained while others don't get enough explanation. Some characters have interesting personalities with weak storylines, while the ones with more interesting plots are less appealing as characters. The only convergence here is in Hinata's route, a dreadful combination of a bland character and a story that is downright poor.
Otherwise, you're dealing with contrasting flavors. If you want the real plot nuggets, those are sitting in the routes of childhood friend Chihaya and Azusa, the fiery stranger who barges into Junya's life. You'll probably want to save those routes for last, as they pretty much spoil the whole mystery. Those two were the routes I enjoyed the most overall, though I can't say I really cared much for either character. Chihaya is the daughter of a wealthy family. She's headed for an arranged marriage when she graduates but is more or less allowed to do what she wants until then. Her dream is to convert her grandparents' old house into a cafe, and she ropes Junya into it. This one goes about the way you would expect, but it was written well enough to keep my interest.
Azusa takes the bull by the horns. Junya runs into her while out on a job, and she does a double-take when she sees him. She quickly becomes angry and accuses Junya of murdering his brother. She clearly knows some things no one else is privy to, and while I can't talk much about her route without spoiling things that are best left unspoiled, I will say that this route is where the biggest plot movements happen in SINce Memories: Off the Starry Sky. Unfortunately, Azusa is a really unpleasant character for much of her route. That's by design of course, as she has a bone to pick with Junya. It doesn't make her any easier to deal with for those hours before she starts to warm up, though.
As I've already mentioned, Hinata's route is a complete wash. She's another of Junya's childhood friends, and also Chihaya's attendant. While she puts up a strong front, she's actually deeply insecure. She's also a closet geek. I really don't know how to describe how off the rails this route goes. It feels like it was written by someone else entirely when compared to the rest of the game. The way events happen and how the characters involved behave both come across as forced.
Chunyu Huang is a Chinese exchange student at Junya's university, and it's hard not to fall in love with her immediately. She's a fun, vibrant character who has plenty of potential to drive a great plot. Her peppy theme music is also my favorite piece in the game. I was extremely dismayed when her route's story turned out to be really weak. Another heroine barges in frequently and at points it comes off like it's her route more than Chunyu's. Perhaps the writers had difficulty creating a satisfying arc for Chunyu because she's more put-together than the other characters from the get-go? I'm not sure, but it's a waste of a great character.
Finally, we have Yuriko. You won't even meet her until several hours into the game, and her late entrance ends up hurting her story a little. She's an idol who is taking a break from show biz, and she's trying to decide if she wants to go back or not. She knew Junya's older brother, as he actually encouraged her to reach for her dream, and she is grieving him in her own way. I like Yuriko. She's a decent character, and while I don't think her route does much for the main plot, I think it's a good breather. Since she comes into the story far later than the other heroines, her arc doesn't get as much time to develop as the others. Somehow, it sticks its landing anyway.
Overall, I found myself somewhat torn by the writing in SINce Memories: Off the Starry Sky. It was engaging enough that I wanted to finish almost all of the routes (not you, Hinata), but I admit that finding the motivation to sniff out all of the endings was hard. Each heroine's route has two endings, and you need to be very careful at literally every choice that comes up in the game. Sometimes things you couldn't possibly imagine would have an effect on the ending will muck everything up. You've got room to make a lot of saves; I strongly recommend you exercise that option.
When I reflect on the parts of the plot that I liked, I can admit there's a lot to appreciate in this game. The problem is that there is just so much build-up that doesn't properly deliver on its promise. Some of the characters misfire, some of the sub-plots misfire, and even the main mystery's resolution doesn't exactly feel like it was worth the squeeze. I think it's okay for a game to take it slow and really set its scene before pushing the drama, but SINce Memories: Off the Starry Sky asks too much for how little it gives back.
At least with the presentation, it's hard to fault the game. The art is fantastic. The music is terrific. You get full Japanese voice acting, and it's good stuff. Even side characters are treated with care, and it helps create a very believable setting. Sometimes visual novels feel like they have a few sets with only five characters in the whole world, but SINce Memories: Off the Starry Sky goes to great lengths to bring its setting alive with plenty of locations, incidental characters, and an excellent soundscape.
I wish the localization matched that level, though. While it does a decent enough job with the broad strokes, the text needed more editing. Typos abound, along with grammar tense mistakes, incorrect pronouns, and outright translation errors. It's not bad enough to sink the game, but it's frequent enough to be noticeable. A slight blemish, but a blemish nonetheless. In a game where you do this much reading, it's really essential to make that prose sing, after all.
SINce Memories: Off the Starry Sky has its good points. The production values haven't been skimped on, the setting is well-realized, and some of the characters are very interesting to get to know. Sadly, the writing on the whole is very uneven, leading to a lot of routes that don't pay off properly and a couple really poor characters. There's some potential here but the game ultimately fails to realize it, despite taking a very long time to get everything into position. It's an inauspicious Western debut for such a beloved franchise.
SINce Memories: Off the Starry Sky is available for PS4, Switch, and PC.

Takara Tomy will release a soft lamp in the shape of the Pokemon Rowlet. It'll come out on November 23, 2024 and cost 3300 JPY ($21.30).
Before you can use it, you will need to insert two AAA alkaline batteries, which are not included with the product. There are two different modes: light mode and squish mode. In light mode, the Rowlet lamp will remain lit for thirty minutes. You can tap it to adjust the brightness and there are three levels to set it at.
Squish mode will adjust the brightness based on when you're actively squishing it, and it'll become dimmer after you remove your hand. If you don't squish it for a little while, the lamp will start flickering to try and get your attention. If you want an actual light source, you should keep the lamp in light mode. Squish mode is more if you want a cute toy to distract and heal you while working or studying.
This Rowlet is part of the Pokemon Peaceful Place collection. Pokemon Peaceful Place, or PokePeace, is a series in which cute Pokemon all live with their humans in the same house. A PokePeace pop-up shop is available in Japan until November 28, 2024, offering items like cushions and towels and keyholders. Other soft lamps available as part of this collection are Pikachu and Piplup.
The latest entry in the Pokemon franchise, Scarlet and Violet, is readily available on the Nintendo Switch.

After taking a brief detour to create an entirely seperate game (as one does), Kay Yu and friends have returned with a new update for bullet heaven/Survivors-like Holocure. While the update adds another two whole generations of Hololive Vtubers as characters, the real meat of Holocure Version 0.7 is the many additions to the Holohouse side-game.
But first, the new characters. Holocure Update 0.7 adds 9 vtubers from Hololive's 3rd and 4th generations, including now the now graduated Kiryu Coco (though not the terminated Uruha Rushia). Each character has their own personal weapon and set of 3 skills, some of which are fairly simple to understand while others encourage a very different style of play or build. Tsunomaki Watame's character, for example, lacks a lot of offensive power but one of her skill lets her defeat enemies by healing them. Or you could simply use her special, which fires an enormous laser, your choice.
There's also a new stage, a new hard mode, and a few new weapons. Holocure's Stage 5, Fantasy Island, honestly took me a good while to crack even with a nearly maxed out upgrade collection. It's a continuous vertical level with cannons to avoid and a lot of very tough enemies, some of which have extra projectile attacks. There's also a really cool final boss at the end and the new Fan Letter system even incentivizes going back to fight it several times for a rare drop.
The new weapons and items are a bit more subdued and situational, though. The new weapon especially isn't super powerful on its own, but combined into one of the new Collabs it can become really fearsome. The last big addition in Holocure 0.7 is the new support skills, which let players choose a utility ability to take in to the game like a heal or a net that catches experience. These are all really useful, however so far I've found the dodge to be far and away the most powerful so it will be interesting to see how the Holocure team balances and builds around the mechanic.
You might be forgiven for thinking that was all, but no, Holocure has more to give. Because multiple new areas have been added to the Holohouse mode, a chill sub-game added with the previous update. Instead of a small area with a house to decorate and small fishing and management minigames, there is now an expansive area to the south containing something like 10 or 11 new minigames. One is a simple crafter-gatherer game involving hitting things until resources fall out, then fashioning them into new tools or crafting items for commission via a different activity. Another is essentially a straight up remake of platformer Jump King, while a new Usada Pekora-themed casino has several games of both chance and skill. You can even train up your mascot workers to fight in the arena, for the most adorable bloodsport.
If I had to criticize it, I'd say some of the minigames are fairly simple or a bit too self contained. There are some bonuses that can be taken into the main bullet heaven mode, but they're mostly quite small and not necessary if you want to skip them. But then that's also a positive, since if you're not as into the Holohouse side of the game you can safely ignore it.
I'd originally felt like the main game content felt a bit light, and that perhaps that was on account of how much was in the Holohouse side of the update, but checking back through previous patch notes and there's just as much content in Holocure update 0.7 as usually comes with these large patches. My perception got skewed by just how much side content we got on top. It feels like Kay Yu and the Holocure team are not just getting better and more productive, but also more inventive and ambitious with what they want to try building within the game. If I were a studio looking for fresh talent I'd snap up these developers right away, but I hope we'll get to see what else they can cook up with Holocure for just a little while longer.
Holocure is immediately available for PC via Steam and itch.io.

HoYoVerse has revealed the order of the banners for Honkai: Star Rail Version 2.7. Sunday will come out first, and then Fugue will come out during the second phase.
When Honkai: Star Rail Version 2.7 comes out, you'll be able to pull for Sunday, who'll be a 5-star Imaginary Harmony character. Jing Yuan will re-run alongside him. The 4-stars on rate-up on these banners will be Arlan, Tingyun, and Qingque. Both Sunday's and Jing Yuan's signature Light Cones will also appear in the gacha for a limited time. Kit-wise, Sunday works well with characters who can create summons (think someone like Lingsha). His Skill increases how much damage they do, as well as causes them to immediately take action. Meanwhile, his Ultimate can regenerate Energy for an ally, as well as increase their Crit DMG based on his own.
The second phase will debut Fugue, who'll be Fire Nihility. Firefly will re-run alongside her. The 4-stars on rate-up on these banners will be Misha, Gallagher, and Yukong. Like with Sunday and Jing Yuan, this gacha will give you the opportunity to pull for Fugue's or Firefly's signature Light Cone. Fugue focuses on Break Effect. Her Skill can increase an ally's Break Effect and let them reduce Toughness even if they don't correspond to the enemy's weakness. Her Ultimate can also reduce Toughness on all enemies, even if they don't have a Fire weakness.
Honkai: Star Rail is readily available on the PS5, Windows PC, and mobile devices. Version 2.7 will come out on December 4, 2024.

Matsuzo Machida, the director of Penny Blood, has filed a lawsuit against indie publisher Dangen Entertainment. The lawsuit alleges that the publisher has not paid the studio funds from the game's Kickstarter campaign.
The lawsuit was revealed in a short statement from Studio Wildrose that the lawsuit had been filed in May 2024. The statement revealed that the lawsuit was filed against Dangen Entertainment and its co-founder Ben Judd, who allegedly have not paid the studio their production funds from the Penny Blood and Armed Fantasia Double Kickstarter.
Penny Blood was first revealed as part of the Double Kickstarter, alongside Armed Fantasia. Both games are spiritual successors to PS2-era RPGs from their original creators. Machida, creator of Shadow Hearts, is leading Penny Blood, while Wild Arms creator Akifumi Kaneko is working on Armed Fantasia. However, while the Kickstarter was a huge success and development on Armed Fantasia appears to be going well, Penny Blood has shown signs of trouble.
Many of Machida's recent updates have focused on difficulties in securing a publisher rather than progress on the game itself. This can be seen in the most recent update, where backers have shown frustration in the comments. However, if the team has not received development funds from the Kickstarter campaign, as the lawsuit alleges, this would explain the lack of progress on Penny Blood.
Further details on the lawsuit are not currently available, and Dangen Entertainment has yet to issue a response.
Penny Blood and Armed Fantasia are currently in development for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. A spin-off game, Penny Blood: Hellbound, is out now in Early Access for PC.

Pocketpair announced that it has delayed the Mac release of Palworld. The game, which was originally scheduled for November 26, 2024, will now be available on Thursday, February 27, 2025. The company noted that it wants to release the Mac version with better quality as a reason for the delay.
The Mac version is slated to make the full potential of a natively run game with the optimizations of Metal and Unreal Engine 5. It will also support HDR and MetalFX Upscaling. The game will be purchasable with a price tag of ¥3,400 in the Japanese store or $29.99 in the American store.
Palworld has been available on numerous platforms—namely Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and Windows PCs. However, its overall existence may be in jeopardy. This is because Nintendo and The Pokemon Company have sued Pocketpair for alleged infringements of patents from the Switch-exclusive title Pokemon Legends: Arceus. The companies are demanding an injunction of Palworld in addition to damage reparation payments caused by the infringements.
The Mac version of Palworld will be available for purchase on February 27, 2025. The game is readily available for Windows PCs via Steam and Microsoft Store, as well as Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5.

Anique Shop will release a CD-style acrylic block for Serial Experiments Lain. Pre-orders will open from November 29, 2024 and end on January 19, 2025. [Thanks, Famitsu!]
The CD-style acrylic block looks exactly as described. It's an acrylic collection item that looks like the package for the CD. However, when you order it, you will also receive a download code for the entire soundtrack of Serial Experiments Lain. For reference, the CD costs 11,820 JPY ($76.60) on Amazon via Manga Boar. On Mercari, the cheapest it's going for is $78.85. However, if you order this acrylic block, you can get the entire soundtrack (72 tracks) for only 3980 JPY ($25.80).
Normally, collectors might not be satisfied with digital ownership. It's not as if you can display the item. However, with the acrylic block, you can place the item in your home while owning the actual soundtrack on your digital device. Of course, some collectors might still prefer to purchase and own the actual soundtrack.
Serial Experiments Lain aired in 1998, with a surreal art style and a story that focuses on topics like reality and communication. Since it came out, it's been a popular work for its atypical story and visuals. In 2023, Anique released an AI chatbot powered by OpenAI, allowing you to speak with Lain, who will in turn grow from conversations with users.
The Serial Experiments Lain acrylic CD block will be available for pre-order via Anique from November 29, 2024. Anique does not offer international shipping.
