How To Fast Travel In Baldur's Gate 3

How To Fast Travel In Baldur's Gate 3
Baldur's Gate III has a very large world to explore, and walking isn't overly quick. This guide on How To Fast Travel In Baldur's Gate 3 will explain the process of fast traveling as well as information on how to unlock new waypoints so you can fast travel to various areas around the map.

Before you're able to fast travel in Baldur's Gate 3, you need to unlock Waypoints. They are easily visible on the map, once discovered. It looks like a purple whirlpool icon. When you are exploring the game world, look for glowing purple glyphs on walls and other surfaces. If you approach, you will see the glyph respond to your presence and a message will pop up on the screen saying you have unlocked a waypoint.

How To Fast Travel In Baldur's Gate 3
The act of fast traveling itself is actually very simple in Baldur's Gate 3. When you are running around the world exploring, look in the top right. In the top right corner there's a number if icons. This is how you visit your camp, take a short rest, take a long rest, and various other actions.

Click the icon that looks like a small wing. This will open the menu for Fast Travel. You cannot click the icons on the map itself, which can be a little confusing. Once you have pressed the Fast Travel button, you will see a Waypoints menu appear in the top right.

This is how you fast travel. You select one of the Waypoints. Once selected, you will immediately fast travel to that location. You do not need to be at a waypoint in order to fast travel.

How To Open Overgrown Ruins In Baldur's Gate 3

How To Open Overgrown Ruins In Baldur's Gate 3
Baldur's Gate 3 has many side activities to discover and explore. This guide on How To Open Overgrown Ruins In Baldur's Gate 3 will tell what you need to do in order to open the large gate that's blocking the entrance to the Overgrown Ruins but be careful, it's not a welcoming place.

Depending on your character, the skills and proficiencies you have, there's often multiple ways to solve most of the puzzles and obstacles you encounter. However, there's also a chance that you're completely ill-equipped for a particular situation and may have to revisit it later down the line. The Overgrown Ruins could be one such situation.

How To Open Overgrown Ruins In Baldur's Gate 3

Open Overgrown Ruins In Baldur's Gate 3
A short distance West of the entrance to the Overgrown Ruins is a busted old dock. There are two wooden crates at the entrance to the dock. Search the larger crate and inside you will find Thieves Tools. These are a special item that allow you to attempt to lockpick a locked door or container. However, the success percentage is based on your Sleight of Hand skill. If that skill is incredibly low, there's a very good chance accessing the Overgrown Ruins could be tough..

To check your Sleight of Hand open the character sheet menu and look at Dexterity. There's a small drop down arrow next to it. As long as your Sleight of Hand is average, you shouldn't have too much trouble. If it's -2 or -3, it may take quite a few attempts but should still be possible.

Return to the Overgrown Ruins gate and save the game. Save it in a fresh slot. Then right click the door and select Lockpick. Depending on your Sleight of Hand skill rating, you may be able to unlock the door on your first attempt. Otherwise it could take many attempts.

When you enter the ruins, search the Sarcophagus in the center of the room last. It activates a number of traps that blast fire across much of the room. Open the Sarcophagus from the North West side so you can run straight towards the door once the traps activate.

Baldur's Gate 3 Character Creation Guide

Baldur's Gate 3 Character Creation Guide
Scared of messing up or wondering what's the best class to build in Baldur's Gate III? This Baldur's Gate 3 Character Creation Guide takes a deep dive into creating your own character in the game, explaining the different class options, skills, abilities, and everything in between.

This guide is going to feature all of the information from the character creator in the game itself, alongside some tips and tricks on getting the maximum out of your build. Players with experience creating characters in Dungeons & Dragons will likely feel right at home but for other players, some of the aspects of character creation may be a little confusing.

Explaining The Basics

Explaining The Basics
If you're not familiar with Dungeons & Dragons or other games of this type, the character creation process may be a little overwhelming. However, it's actually relatively simple once you cut through to the very basics of creating your own character.

There are 6 main abilities in the game. Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma. While it's not really possible to create a bad character, as a lot of characters are about playing the role, but it is definitely possible to make inefficient characters. There is a huge variety and tons of potential but for the sake of keeping things simple, we're focusing on the basics for creating your first character. There are many exceptions to the below but again, just the basics.

A lot of focus when building your character should be based on Proficiency bonuses. As you level up in the game your Proficiency Bonus increases. A Proficiency Bonus applies that bonus to all skills in which the character is Proficient. So for example, a Rogue will often use Stealth and Sleight of Hand, so you want to make sure you are proficient with those skills.

Class

Baldur's Gate 3 Character Creation Guide Classes
With a basic understanding of Proficiencies, now it's time to set the foundations for your character. The game puts the choices in a strange order as you will likely want to choose your class first. There are six classes available in Early Access. Cleric, Fighters, Ranger, Rogue, Warlock, and Wizard. It's worth noting that during Chapter 1 of the game you will encounter a Cleric, a Fighter, a Rogue, and a Wizard. So if you don't want to create a healing class like a Cleric, don't worry as you will get healing options very early.

Some classes, such as Cleric, have access to additional options that can drastically change the classes role. For example, Life Domain Clerics focus primarily on healing whereas Light Domain Clerics have access to more damaging spells. Other classes, such as Fighter, unlock these options after leveling up so there's always more to a class than what is available at the start.

Ultimately, the class decision is up to you. They are all functional, balanced, and great fun to play. You will also notice that magical classes have access to Cantrips and Spells. Cantrips are abilities that you can use every turn if you wish. Spells are more powerful but also restricted based on Spell Slots, a resource for casting spells that is returned when you sleep or long rest.

Once you have decided which class to play, head to the Origin tab.

Origin

Baldur's Gate 3 Character Creation Guide
Now that you've chosen your class, look at the Abilities on the left and see what your classes main Ability is. As you can see above our Cleric's main source of stats comes with Wisdom, so all Wisdom actions are boosted with a Proficiency bonus. Now you want to focus on your Background. These are additional Proficiencies that fall outside your main Abilities. This is the best way to add a bit of charm and character to your creation.

For example, you're now building a Cleric. A divine healer to keep your allies alive. The class automatically gets Proficiency Bonuses to Religion, Medicine, and Perception. Maybe you want to double up as a bit of thief or stealth specialist. You can take the Urchin background that provides a bonus to Sleight of Hand and Stealth. Or maybe you want to be more useful in conversations so you take Noble to be able to persuade people to your way of thinking.

All Skills are used are some point or another but there are definitely ones that occur more frequently. Persuasion and Intimidation can often be used to avoid fights, obtain information and perform otherwise very useful feats. If you're unsure of what to take, Noble is a generally safe bet.

Once you've done the Origin, choose your race.

Race

Baldur's Gate 3 Character Creation Guide
There are a lot of races and subraces in Baldur's Gate 3 and ultimately, there is no wrong choice. If you want to maximize your efficiency, it's a good idea to take a Race that compliments your other decisions. So, working on the base Cleric again, the most important stats are Wisdom, Constitution and Strength. As such, it would be a good idea to take a race that adds further to those bonuses.

Humans are a safe choice as they provide +1 to all stats. Half-Elf is another good choice as you're given the choice of adding two points to any of the Abilities. There are many other ways to build characters. For example you could quite easily focus on Wisdom & Dexterity as a Cleric for a higher armor value, but breaking from the traditional ability scores can be more difficult to manage.

Not having the bonuses from the race is not a game breaker. If you want to play a specific race because of lore or appearance, go for it.

Skills

Character Creation Guide - Skills
Skills are the backbone of your characters strengths and weaknesses. They are not directly tied to combat, they are more for other areas of the game. During your adventures in Baldur's Gate 3 you will come across hundreds of unique situations that require specialist knowledge in certain areas. There is no right or wrong choice here, all skills are valuable, but others do see more use.

Animal Handling can help you avoid a fight against a fearsome Owlbear. Intimidating a group of Goblins could help you avoid a dangerous fight. Sleight of Hand makes it easier to pick locks and pickpocket other characters. Survival can help you identify tracks and spot ambushes. It's more about creating your characters personality that maximizing efficiency here.

If you're stuck on choices Persuasion is used a lot throughout the game. Sleight of Hand is a great skill for getting into secret areas and completing challenging objectives. Medicine can help with healing injured civilians you encounter. Stealth can help you open combat with a powerful, swift strike to a strong opponent. There's a lot of options here, experiment and play the game for a few hours and see what would most benefit your play style.

Abilities

Baldur's Gate 3 Character Creation Guide
This is the one area where you can really make your experience much easier or much harder. Using Cleric as an example again. Wisdom determines their ability to cast their spells. Ignoring that entirely and placing all of your points into Charisma will make some parts of the game much more complicated. It's perfectly viable to build whacky characters but if it's your first time using a system of this type, it's a good idea to find your footing with basic characters first.

You can always come back and make something a bit more unique.

Strength
Determines how likely your attack is to hit your target, when using Strength weapons
Affects your jumping distance
Increases carrying capacity

Dexterity
Determines how likely your attack is to hit your target, when using Dexterity weapons
Influences Initiative (Who goes first in combat)
Increases your armor value (How hard you are to be hit)

Constitution
How many maximum hitpoints you can have
Useful for everyone but less important for range/magical roles

Intelligence
Determines hit chance for magical spells

Wisdom
Determines hit chance of spells for Clerics, Rangers, and Druids

Charisma
Determines hit chance for Bards, Paladins, Sorcerers, and Warlocks magical spells

Each Ability can only be as high as 17 during character creation, that includes bonuses from everything else. Focus on the primary abilities to support your chosen class and then, if you choose, you can add a couple of points elsewhere for some bonuses to other aspects of your character.

Creating, experimenting, and enjoying new characters is one of the most exciting aspects of Baldur's Gate 3 so don't be afraid to experiment. It's easy enough to roll a new character so have fun with it and see what you can come up with.

Can You Rescue The Woman Trapped In The Mind Flayer Pod In Baldur's Gate 3?

Can You Rescue The Woman Trapped In The Mind Flayer Pod In Baldur's Gate 3
In the prologue for Baldur's Gate III you find a survivor trapped within the pod. As all good heroes would, you ask yourself can you rescue the woman trapped in the Mind Flayer Pod in Baldur's Gate 3? The game is filled with many choices and consequences. Some are obvious and have an effect immediately, others take hours or even days before the begin to show consequence. Whatever you decide, make sure you're prepared to live with it.

To answer the question in the most simplest of ways possible, no, you cannot rescue the woman trapped inside the Mind Flayer Pod, at least not a way we've found. If you inspect the pod, there is an opportunity for an Arcane check. If successful, you are told that there are Warding runes holding the survivor trapped within the Pod. If they are destroyed, it will open and the survivor will be free.

Can You Rescue The Woman Trapped In The Mind Flayer Pod In Baldur's Gate 3?

Further choices such as disrupting the bright lines of magic or looking for a latch, will have no effect. We looked everywhere in the Prologue but did not find any Warding Runes to smash. There is however a benefit to interacting with the pod.

The survivor trapped inside the pod is Shadowheart. She is a Companion in Baldur's Gate 3 that you will meet a short while after this first encounter. She will remember whether or not you attempted to save her while aboard the ship. So if you want that relationship to get off to a positive start, it's a good idea to attempt to save her, even if it's not possible.

There are many different ways to tackle situations in Baldur's Gate 3 so not all items are going to be available, depending on the choices you make. For example, some special items require you to kill a certain enemy or NPC so if you don't wish to kill them, you can't get the item. However, there's some great items that are worth the moral dilemma.

Baldur's Gate 3 Choices & Consequences Guide

Baldur's Gate 3 Choices & Consequences Guide
Baldur's Gate 3 features many paths, many options, but each come with a consequence. In this Baldur's Gate 3 Choices & Consequences Guide we list many of the major choices that you can make throughout your adventure in the game, as well as detailing the consequences that can occur later down the line.

Many interactions in Baldur's Gate 3 will give you a choice, however, more often than not the outcome is obvious. For example, you're given a Strength or Dexterity choice to pull a brain out of a corpse. The choice there is how to remove the brain, whether or not you can is down to a dice roll. For other choices, ones that are actually more choice-based, like whether to remove the brain or not, we'll cover those below.

Baldur's Gate 3 Choices & Consequences Guide – Prologue

Remove The Brain Or Destroy The Brain
In the second room aboard the vessel in the Prologue you can here a voice saying "We are here". If you interact with the Neural Apparatus, it will transport you to the upper level where you see a human body with the brain revealed.

If You Remove The Brain
If you pass the Skill Check to remove the brain, you get another choice. To mutilate the brain or spare the creature. If you spare the creature it falls to the floor and sprouts legs and spikes. If you mutilate the brain, you interfere with it somehow but the creature does not seem to notice. It joins your party as a Companion.

If You Destroy The Brain
If you choose this option you destroy the brain and the human host dies.

Mind Flayer Pod - Rescue The Trapped Woman
There's not really an obvious choice here but there is a choice nonetheless. If you do not interact with the pod in any way, it will have a negative impact on a relationship with a character a short while into the game (she becomes a companion). If you interact with the pod and try to rescue the trapper survivor, she will remember it later.

Chapter 1 Choices & Consequences Guide

Meeting Astarion
There are a few choices in this conversation. If you choose to try and kill the brain bug he claims to have seen, he will ambush you with a knife. The same happens if you tell him to kill it himself. However, if you choose to make him do it you can immediately attempt to escape the knife with a dexterity or strength roll. From there it's just an introduction to Astarion who becomes a companion.
Survivors Digging Up The Mind Flayer
At the beginning of this conversation you can try to Persuade them to see through the Mind Flayer's mind control. If you are successful, they will eventually flee. If you fail with the Persuasion check, they will attack you.

You can then interact with the Mind Flayer. The first choice results in the same outcome, you can either break free of the mind control of concentrate on its thoughts. If you try to break free, you can kill it. If you concentrate on its thoughts and succeed you can then submit to the feeling or use Wisdom to resist. If you submit, the Mind Flayer consumes your brain and you die and will have to fight the Mind Flayer. He will kill you all.

Let Nettie Prick You
When you arrive at Nettie the healer she takes you into the back room and offers a cure via a poke with a stick. The stick is actually coated in a deadly poison. If you let her poke you with it, you will have to kill her, knock her out, or steal the antidote from her before you're able to leave the room. If you dodge the stick and convince her you are not showing symptoms, you can leave when you wish.
Dealing With The Owlbear - Kill It Or Let It Live
Owlbear
During your travels you will eventually encounter the Owlbear nest. There are multiple ways to tackle this situation. If you approach the Owlbear too closely, combat will initiate and you will have to fight it. If you stand relatively close and don't move, allowing the Owlbear to see you, a conversation begins.

The best way to solve this is to use Wyll and the Speak With Animals Invocation. It makes the conversation easier but the outcome is one of two things. You kill it or you leave. If you convince the Owlbear to let you go, you can simply leave the cave. If you kill the Owlbear and leave the cub alive, you have the choice to kill the cub or let it go.

If you kill it, it dies. If you let it live, you get to watch it begin eating it's mother. Make sure to take the Spear Head off the Owlbear corpse. And loot the egg and other valuables from its nest. You should have the Shaft of a Broken Spear from the body of True Soul Edowin just to the East of the cave. Combine them both in your inventory to get a blue spear, it's very strong.

The Old Lady & Two Brothers
You can decide to help the old lady or the two brothers here. The old lady is some sort of witch, she is willing to help you remove the parasite in exchange for your eye, but it seems like a very sketchy deal to say the least.

If you choose calm down
This is the only way to avoid killing the brothers. Then you say "Tell the truth". The old lady seems upset with you and vanishes. Then you have a quest to save the sister. After choosing calm down, the other options have the same outcome.

Lower Your Weapons
This results in you having to kill the brothers

Nothing To Do With Me
The old woman kills both the bothers and flees

There are a lot of choices and consequences throughout the game so we're still working through a lot of them. Check back soon for updates.

Baldur's Gate 3 Side Quest Guide
Hidden quests and objectives provide some worthwhile rewards in Baldur's Gate III. This Baldur's Gate 3 Side Quest Guide will tell you where to find each of the side quests we have discovered on our journey through the game, as well as some hints and tips to completing each of the quests.

It's important to note that, due to Baldur's Gate 3's style of game, most side quests can be approached in many different ways. Sometimes you'll find a quest objective before actually picking up the quest itself, sometimes you may even complete side quests without knowing. We've highlighted how we approached each side quest but remember, there's always more than one option available should you approach it from a different perspective.

Baldur's Gate 3 Side Quest Guide

Explore The Ruins
Explore The Ruins
Near the start of Ravaged Beach, where you meet Shadowheart. There is a locked door. Search the chests at the docks to the South East and to the West, you should find some Thieves Tools. You can use this to pick the lock on the door. I would wait a short while before attempting, until you have at least one more companion as it can be rough inside.

Explore The Ruins

In the first room loot everything except the Sarcophagus at the center of the room. Position your team like this and then use one character to loot it, then run North West to escape the fire arrow traps. Head into the next room to loot then North West again into the final room.

Explore The Ruins

Saving Arabella
When you reach The Hollow, head down the stairs to speak with the Druids performing the ritual. At the bottom of the stairs will be a group of civilians arguing. After the cut-scene where the druid transforms into a bear, speak with the distraught mother. She will ask you to free her daughter, then head into the main chamber.

When you enter you can attempt a Persuasion check, if successful she will be freed and return to her mother. If you fail, the child will die. The same outcome will take effect if you choose Nature and fail the check.

Save Mayrina
Save Mayrina
There are two bothers arguing with an oldy lady at this location. If you choose "Calm Down" as the first conversation option, then ask the old lady where the girl is, you will get the quest to save Mayrina.

Save Mayrina
Head to this location to find the old ladies house, you see the two brothers on the road, both dead. When you reach the house you tell the sister of her brothers' fate than you have to fight the hag and some other enemies. She retreats after a short while, leaving you to fight the goblin-like creatures. Once they are defeated follow her into the lair below.

Save before trying to get through the tree-like door as if you fail both checks, I was unable to find another way in.

Finish The Masterwork Weapon
Finish The Masterwork Weapon
You can find this quests here, in in the Blighted Village. There's Goblins here but you can persuade them to leave you alone. There is a locked barn, just after you enter the village. Pick the lock and head inside into a basement style smithing area.

Still working on completing this one.

Rescue Volo
Rescue Volo
You may meet this wandering Minstrel in the small settlement with the Druids. If you don't you will encounter him later on in the game, as a prisoner in the goblin camp. Once you meet him at the goblin camp he will be escorted into the cells, which is in the interior to the goblin camp, at the location marked above. You can use Deception or Persuasion to free him, or you can pickpocket the key off the female goblin, or slaughter her and take it. After that, open the cage and tell him to meet you at camp.

We're still working through a lot of side quests so check back soon for updates.

Baldur's Gate III Early Access Preview
A sequel 20 years in the making, the original Baldur's Gate ushered in a new era for the role-playing genre, blending the freedom of tabletop with the visual splendor of the gaming medium. Two decades on from the release of Baldur's Gate II and Larian Studios, developers of the critically acclaimed Divinity: Original Sin franchise, bring together the all-new Divinity 4.0 engine with the beloved Dungeons & Dragons universe for an exciting new Early Access tale.

Baldur's Gate 3 wastes very little time setting a dark and somber tone for this adventure. You begin the story trapped aboard a strange flying vessel, a combination of organics and machines, tentacles stretching out across the sky, engines roaring at the rear. Restrained in some bizarre alien pod, you witness a strange figure approaching a small pool of water, resting atop a mysterious pedestal. The creatures bizarre, elongated figures stretch into the pool, plucking a small worm-like creature from below.

You then watch in horror as a Mind Flayer, one of Dungeons & Dragons' most iconic and universally feared monsters, infects a nearby prisoner with a parasite that enters the body via the eye socket, and you watch every second. I cannot imagine anyone being able to sit comfortably through this sequence without wincing or looking away in disgust; it's great. Moments later, you share the parasitic fate of your fellow prisoners as the large, alien ship flies over a heavily populated city – snatching up terrified civilians with its outstretched tentacles.

A group of dragon-mounted warriors attack the vessel, forcing it to flee to another plane. As they give chase, the vessel begins to fall apart, freeing many of the prisoners trapped within. The vessel eventually crash lands in Faerun, where you learn that the parasites you were infected with will eventually transform you into a Mind Flayer. You begin a race against time to find a healer but Faerun is a land with its own troubles and turmoils. It's a fantastic start to an already intriguing story that develops at a good pace throughout the first chapter of the game.

Character Creation

Baldur's Gate III Early Access Preview

The first phase of Early Access for Baldur's Gate 3 only offers the first chapter of the story, but the depth of content available within the character creation suite offers almost endless replay value – albeit in a more limited sandbox. Even with the limited selection available in the build we played, there are thousands of character possibilities and combinations, embodying the the fundamental aspects of Dungeons and Dragons in warm embrace.

While a basic understanding of the Dungeons & Dragons 5e ruleset will undoubtedly help when creating characters, it's far from a requirement. Many of the more complicated aspects of character creation are simplified, thoroughly explained, and visually displayed to make the information easily digestible. All of the regular fantasy tropes are present. The half-naked, dimwitted barbarian Fighter who'd sooner punch a stranger in the face than greet them with a smile. The arrogant, eccentric Wizard whose vanity would gives the gods a run for their money.

Whether you want to stick to a more traditional fantasy character or create something more unique, the options are their to not only support a flourish of creativity, but actively reward it with unique progression options, hidden skills, and fellow companions that can help fill skill voids within your party.

The World Of Faerun

Baldur's Gate III Early Access Preview

The Early Access nature of Baldur's Gate 3 does leave a lot of the bells and whistles needing some fine tuning and improvement, but the foundations for an incredible game are well cemented in place. Despite offering just a single chapter, the world of Faerun is a visual masterpiece and packed with content from the first step, to the last. You can recruit companions (each with their own class and progression systems) and can also discover hidden treasures and side quests – everything you would expect from a game based on the world of Dungeons & Dragons.

A few short steps after recovering from the crash landing of the alien vessel, I stumbled into some musky old ruins, dark, covered in deadly traps, and other unseen terrors. Analyzing my surroundings, I notice a large sarcophagus almost perfectly centrally placed in a large room. The RPG experienced veteran within me immediately knew that there was treasure to be had in this here sarcophagus. If only my lesser experience Dungeons & Dragons self warned me of the perils of obvious treasure in D&D.

The looting of the sarcophagus triggered several nearby traps, launching firebolts from recesses in the walls. The game immediately switches automatically to turn-based mode so I can better control my characters to avoid further mishaps. However, I realized, in almost slow motion, that I was surrounded by a highly flammable substance on the floor. My party perished, reduced to ash and bone. I feel obligated to add that this happened not five minutes after starting my adventure on Faerun.

There are many, many more situations like this that I would love to share, but with only the first chapter currently available, I'll leave you to explore the rest for yourself.

Fundamentally Impressive, Technically Flawed

Baldur's Gate III Early Access Preview

The build we got to play was a pre-alpha build to the upcoming Early Access build launching on Steam. The foundations of creating a remarkable game are firmly in place, but the technical struggles of an Early Access game are clearly on display throughout the experience. Texture loading problems, frequent crashes, ventriloquist NPCs that talk without any facial movement whatsoever – there's a lot of problems within Baldur's Gate 3.

However, as these problems may hinder progress and become frustrating at times, it's not really that bad – if you're used to Early Access games. Each time the game crashed, I was still excited to load it back up. Even when I lost my save file (a press-related issue that will not be present in the final build), I was even more excited to make a new character and try the adventure from a different perspective.

Unfortunately, due to limited access, we were unable to test the multiplayer aspects of the game. We will be diving into a co-op adventure once the game is released.

Final Thoughts

Baldur's Gate III Early Access Preview

Baldur's Gate 3 is an Early Access game in every sense. If you're looking for a highly polished experience, don't let the technical problems ruin the game and jump in later down the line. However, if the very thought of playing Baldur's Gate 3 is enough for you to constantly refresh the Steam page waiting for release, it will not disappoint.

Baldur's Gate 3 is already a fantastically good time with an intriguing story, colorful characters, and a masterfully created game world. It's in its very early days, but this is one of the most exciting Early Access titles to hit Steam in years.

The contents in the article above are the thoughts and opinions of the editor on the date of publication. Early Access games evolve and change through development. The editor played Baldur's Gate 3 via the Steam client; digital access was provided.
