It's not all positive, as the superstar duo of Devin Booker and Kevin Durant have both received nerfs in their current overall ratings. In Severance Season 2 Episode 8 Sweet Vitriol we meet the character played by the Emmy Award-winning actress Jane Alexander. But who does Jane Alexander play in Severance Season 2, and what is her importance to the show? Let's take a look.
![]()
Who does Jane Alexander play in Severance?
Jane Alexander plays the character Celestine "Sissy" Cobel, which is Harmony Cobel's aunt and the sister of Harmony's mother. In Severance Season 2 Episode 8 titled Sweet Vitriol, Harmony returns to her childhood town and encounters Celestine when trying to recover something she left behind at the home in which she grew up.
Throughout the episode we learn a lot about Harmony but also about Sissy Cobel, played by Jane Alexander. Sissy was also an employee of Lumon Industries, which seemed to have a pretty heavy hand in what was going on in Harmony's hometown. According to Sissy, the town had nothing before Lumon showed up and built an Ether Mill there.
Harmony's mother, Charlotte, had some sort of chronic illness ailing her, and it is inferred that she developed it from working at the Ether Mill. Sissy was the caretaker for Charlotte while Harmony has been working for Lumon since taking on a Wintertide Fellowship at the company at the age of 12.
In Harmony's eyes, Sissy is partially responsible for the death of her mother Charlotte, as she believes its her that "pulled the plug" on the machine that kept her mother alive, therefore ending her life. While her mother turned against Lumon in the later stages of her life, Sissy has kept a devout and almost cult-like loyalty to Lumon and the Eagan family. It's quite evident that Sissy kept Harmony's mother Charlotte from leveraging the complains against the company to any outside sources, which was probably by design from Lumon.
Near the end of the episode, it's revealed that Harmony has played a larger role than we expected when it comes to Severance, but Sissy quickly tries to invalid Harmony's reveal and even attempts to burn the evidence in the fire, proving that her loyalties lie first and foremost to Lumon.

In Severance Season 2 Episode 8 Sweet Vitriol we get a lot of references to Ether, which has also been referenced throughout both Season 1 and Season 2. Here is what we know about Ether and what it is in Severance and its importance in Season 2 Episode 8.
![]()
What is Ether?
In Severance, Ether more than likely refers to an actual organic chemical compound called Diethyl Ether, or simply Ether for short. It's a colourless and "sickly sweet" smelling liquid that is incredibly volatile and flammable. It was first synthesized in 1540 but became the main general anesthetic in the 1840s until the 1960s when it was replaced by safer and more effective anesthetics like Halothane and Sevoflurane.
Diethyl Ether also has both anesthetic and euphoric effects, which can lead to addiction, which we see from Harmony Cobel's childhood friend in Severance Season 2 Episode 8 Sweet Vitriol, who appears to be addicted to it.
In the world of Severance, Ether is also commonly referenced, as it's said that Lumon founder Kier Eagan met his wife Imogene Eagan at an Ether Factory where Kier was a stewman and Imogene was a swab girl.
As for in the episode Sweet Vitriol, Harmony Cobel talks about working at an Ether Factory at the age of 8 before she left for a Wintertide Fellowship at the age of 12. It's also the drug that both Harmony Cobel and her childhood friend take a huff of while sitting in her mother's room in Severance Season 2 Episode 8.
How does Ether tie into Severance?
In a way, the use of Ether before the Severance program existed was an early form of Severance. Lumon has clearly long been an industrious company, but we now know they also heavily used child labor. It's quite possible that Ether was used to dissociate people from their reality, which is one of the most common uses of Severance.
Interestingly, there might even be a deeper connection of Ether to what's going on with Lumon and the world of Severance. In Season 2 Episode 4 titled ORTBO, Milchick leads the MDR innies to find Kier's diary, which talks about Kier Eagan's twin brother Dieter Eagan, which until that time has never been referenced and isn't listed in the official Eagan lineage that Lumon employees are told about.
In the diary it talks about Dieter doing an outlandish act in front of his brother, Kier, and "spilling his lineage upon the soil." Afterward, Kier claims that his brother melted grotesquely in front of him after this act, seemingly punished for his "wantonness".
The relation here comes from the name Dieter, which could come from a hybridized version of Diethyl Ether. If so, that could mean that Dieter wasn't actually a twin brother of Kier Eagan, but rather a form of himself when under the anesthetic and euphoric effects of using the substance.

For the first time since earlier in the season, Harmony Cobel appears in Severance Season 2 Episode 8 which is titled Sweet Vitriol. She's not only in this episode, but the episode revolves around her returning to her hometown for some answers. Let's dive into Severance Season 2 Episode 8 Sweet Vitriol and recap everything we learn in this episode.

Harmony Cobel returns home
In Severance Season 2 Episode 8 titled Sweet Vitriol, the entire episode is entirely focused on Harmony Cobel, also known as Mrs. Selvig throughout Severance season one, as she returns to her hometown. We're never given a name of the hometown, but it's a cold coastal town that looks incredibly similar to Newfoundland in Canada. Honestly, it very well could be Cold Harbour, which would open a whole other can of worms, so let's not get too tinfoil hat here.
There she meets up with what appears to be a previous love interest or at the very least childhood friend, and explains to him that she knows Lumon is watching over the town, so asks for his help. He agrees and helps her return to the house in which she grew up, where she claims to be looking for something.
She arrives at her home where her aunt, a devout—and honestly, crazy—follower of Kier. We're talking like full on religious cult levels of following. There, Cobel argues with her aunt about the passing of her mother, who Cobel says she didn't even get to see before she passed away. She argues with her aunt, in which we learn a lot about Harmony Cobel's childhood.
What we learned about Harmony Cobel in Severance Season 2 Episode 8
Well, we actually learned a lot about Ms. Cobel and how she came to be a part of Lumon. We learn that at the young age of 8, Cobel worked at an Ether factory, much like the one in which the original founder Kier Eagan worked in and where he met his wife Imogene.
After some time, around the age of 12, Cobel acquired a Wintertide Fellowship much like Ms. Huang who we were introduced to in Season 2 of Severance, and who has essentially replaced Cobel on the Severance floor of Lumon in Kier.
Also, a fun fact I want to point out about Wintertide. It's an anagram for Dieter Twin, which at a glance doesn't matter much, however, we learned a few episodes ago that Kier Eagan had a twin brother named Dieter. Nothing is coincidence in the world of Severance. Furthermore, Dieter Eagan itself is an anagram for AI Generated. Food for thought.
Severance Season 2 Episode 8 Sweet Vitriol ending explained
At the end of Severance Season 2 Episode 8, Harmony Cobel finds what she had been looking for the whole time. A diary of sketches, formulas, and designs that indicate that Ms. Cobel is actually the person who created Severance. That's right, Harmony Cobel is the person behind the creation of Severance including, according to her, the base code, the circuit blueprint, as well as the overtime contingency and Glasgow block protocols.
This revelation is of course massive, and explains why Ms. Cobel has such an interest in remaining on the Severance floor and knowing how things are going, despite Helena trying to promote her to a higher position at Lumon. It also adds some comic relief to the statement from Helena to Harmony that she shouldn't overstate her contributions to Lumon, seeing as, well, she is the creator of Severance, although Jame Eagan has been attempting to take credit for it.
In the final moment of the episode, Cobel answers a call from Mark's sister Devon Scout who asks for her help and explains to her that Mark is reintegrating. Cobel asks if it's at the hands of Reghabi, which Devon confirms. Cobel asks to speak to Mark and demands he "tells her everything."
It would appear that, although an unlikely duo, Harmony and Mark may be teaming up in the very near future to get some answers, or at least some revenge, on Lumon.
