Apple took to the sky this week, figuratively speaking, pumping up its Air lines and a couple of other devices. Overall, the changes to the MacBook Air, iPad Air, entry-level iPad, and Mac Studio were relatively lightweight. We got new and updated Apple silicon (some of it looks ridiculously powerful), a smattering of feature upgrades, and, in the case of the MacBook Air, one gorgeous new color: Sky Blue. Surprisingly, such details can be enough to virtually dominate the tech news cycle.
Apple’s new devices had competition, though. In Barcelona, Team TechRadar gathered at Mobile World Congress to check out the latest in mobile (and not-so-mobile) tech, including some exciting innovations in smartphones and even earbuds. MWC is a reminder that, outside the US, Apple is not the leading smartphone manufacturer, and does not hold the innovation bragging rights. I was especially intrigued by the new Nothing phones and the Xiaomi 15 Ultra, which looks a bit like an old-school Leica camera.
AI is still front and center for many of us, and certainly for the tech companies competing to take the lead in that space. Apple is still pushing Apple Intelligence, even if it remains somewhat disappointing. Our story about why being polite to your AI matters struck a chord with me, and had me apologizing to Alexa. And I hope you’re ready for Google search to go entirely AI.
