Oblivion Remastered review - a faithful, unnecessary return to a beloved classic

Remasters are funny things. They exist in an awkward halfway house between original and remake. Geriatric polygons are treated to a spit shine with Unreal Engine 5 polish until they gleam in Lumen sunlight, only for those same polygons to behave with decades-old logic. Contrast this with FF7 Remake's modern descent into metanarrative and multiverses, where plot threads are rewritten by destiny and directors who've had decades to mull over their creative decisions. Oblivion Remastered is not a remake, but it's not a straightforward remaster either.

It's been a little under a year since the vehicular combat racing game Warhammer 40,000: Speed Freeks launched into early access, and yesterday developer Caged Element Inc. announced that it'll be receiving its 1.0 launch next week, May 22nd. There are a couple notable changes that come with this launch though. For starters, Wired Productions are taking over from Plaion on publishing duties. As the devs explained in a Steam post, the reason this matters to you is the second change, which is that you'll have to pay for it when it arrives next week. Some of you, anyway.

These days, when there's so many games coming out that I feel like an overwhelmed dog with free reign in a butcher's, there's no sweeter sentence to me than "this game will take you no longer than two hours." I know for some people length is everything (don't), but personally I love a short, good time (seriously, leave it out). So the second I saw Formless Star, an eclectic little creature cataloguing game, and read that it was one to two hours long, I was immediately in.

At a time where there is constantly word of this or that game shutting down, even successful ones, it will never fail to surprise me that Final Fantasy 11 is still going. You can't play it on PS2 anymore, but there's still an active community on PC even now. The MMO just celebrated its 23rd anniversary yesterday in fact, with a new update video and letter from the producer Yoji Fujito released to highlight some of the new and upcoming features.

Earlier this week, it was leaked and then later confirmed that Stellar Blade, that Nier and Bayonetta-esque one with the jiggle physics cranked up to the max, would be coming to PC next month on June 11th. This was obviously welcome news to the kind of people who enjoy that sort of thing (more or less no judgement here). But it quickly became apparent that there was a bit of a caveat: the action game isn't available to pre-order in all regions on Steam.

Bungie aren't having a very good week are they? First there were those accusations of Marathon using assets without permission from the artist 4ant1r34l (Antireal), which Bungie admitted to taking place. Then yesterday there was a livestream featuring game director Joe Ziegler and art director Joseph Cross which was filled with chat messages about said asset usage for practically the entire stream. Ziegler and Cross did at least address those messages, but with the response to the shooter already being quite mixed thus far, it doesn't amount to much right now.

The 31st Consort Could Be a Promising Shojo Manga

There are so many shojo manga about a young woman who might get to marry royalty, but endures so many challenges and develops so many enemies along the way. It's frustrating! Especially when the heroine herself isn't taking it well and sometimes gets down on herself or questions who she is. The 31st Consort seems, from the outside, like it could be such a story. It is about the underdog potential wife for a king competing against other consorts. However, the character of Felia and way she wins over those around her makes it feel a little fresher in the first volume.

Editor's Note: There are minor spoilers for the first volume of The 31st Consort shojo manga below.

Felia is a rather ordinary girl from Karodia province living with Ricarro, her oldest brother that is the area's lord, and her other brother Garon. She's a rather ordinary person who enjoys tending to the herbs that region is known for. However, because of her station, she ended up being picked as one of the king's consorts. The thing is, she's the 31st one. Which means she only sees him on months with 31 days, as that's when he'll see her. Because of that, and the fact that it's the lowest ranked in terms of power, nobody else wanted the spot and it fell to her. Because this is a position that lasts for a year, her brothers basically talk her into it, so off she goes.

First, I want to say that it's a little off-putting that Felia is considered "old" at just over 22. I get this is supposed to be something of a period piece, but it shocked me a bit! I did read shojo series along similar lines with younger heroines, so it isn't the most egregious case of that.

From there, we get to see Felia's arrival and what life would be like for the 31st consort. Since she's a country girl and their community is more humble, she arrives in her ordinary clothing, with her brother Ricarro bringing her to the castle in an ox cart. Rather than be captivated by the impressive palace, she's more concerned with the soil, flowers, and composting possibilities. Her home ends up being the most, well, homely! She gets her own wooden house, a garden, and she's not getting any maids since nobody wanted to live so humbly. Which she attests as fine, as she's the type of person who didn't want or need one. All she basically has is the Knight Commander Binz to help, and her only request ends up being farming tools.

Aside from the shock about her age, The 31st Consort ends up being quite pleasant from there on out. Binz and other members of the knights' fourth unit assigned to her end up making themselves at home and befriending her, in a better situation than other knights assigned to demanding or terrifying higher-ranked consorts. She had no issue standing up to an intimidating housekeeper who apparently usually leaves people cowed. It's sweet to see her adapt so well and people genuinely appreciate her, as well as her make astute observations about the soil, area, country, and other consorts. So much so that people like Binz are willing to fight for her and other consorts' knights escape to hang out at her place.

This all means once Felia meets King Macron after months, we're also meeting him for the first time. And his feelings on marriage and the consort process feels like it mirrors hers. He doesn't care for it. He doesn't want to spend time with unpleasant people. He basically wants to do his job, and he's counting down the days. We see what he goes through with them, the governmental process that involves whittling down candidates, and finally his first meeting with Felia. Even though the housekeeper delayed the king's visit, due to her dislike of Felia. But when he does arrive, it's genuinely satisfying and makes The 31st Consort seem like a shojo manga with some potential.

While the initial introduction for this shojo manga might seem a bit awkward, I ended up really enjoying the first volume of The 31st Consort. Felia is such a down-to-earth, practical heroine. She savors what she has, appreciates a challenge, is incredibly competent, and always remains in character. It ends up being quite a delight, and I ended up rooting for the 31st consort to be picked by the end of the first volume too.

The first volume of The 31st Consort is now available, and Yen Press will release volume 2 on August 26, 2025.

BitLife Unlike Us Challenge

It's time for another musical BitLife challenge to roll by. During BitLife's Unlike Us challenge, your goal is to have a character become a famous rapper with several records that go platinum and successful tours that bring in millions. With this success comes some enemies, making everything even more fun.

BitLife Unlike Us challenge guide

BitLife's Unlike Us challenge has five tasks to complete:

  • Be born in Los Angeles
  • Become a famous rapper
  • Turn a friend into an enemy
  • Make $1M+ while going on tour
  • Have 3+ records go platinum

Completing this challenge requires purchasing the Musician expansion pack. Without it, you won't be able to become a famous rapper, go on tours, or obtain platinum records, despite the other two objectives being easily achievable without it.

Be born in Los Angeles

Your first task in BitLife's Unlike Us challenge is to have a character born in Los Angeles. To do this, set your starting country as the United States and Los Angeles as your place. Your name and gender are entirely up to you. You'll also want to select Music as your special talent to make later tasks in this challenge easier.

To make your odds of becoming a famous rapper easier later, create a character with high looks stats. Although you don't require high looks for this challenge, your odds of success are generally higher, especially when raising your fame later on. Alternatively, you can use plastic surgery and gym visits to achieve the same effect.

As you age up, make a few friends through elementary and high school. You'll need them in the challenge's third task. Having more than one will prepare you for any unexpected losses in friendships.

Become a famous rapper

Once you create a new character born in Los Angeles, it's time to prepare for your future rap career. Once your character turns 8, head into Activities, Mind and Body, and Voice Lessons to begin taking free singing classes. Your goal is to max this stat as early as possible to land auditions to become a musical artist.

Once your character turns 18 and maxes out their singing skills, head into Occupation, Special Careers, and Musician before auditioning as a Singer Solo Artist. You have three opportunities to do this annually, with your audition performance determining whether you get a contract. If you perform poorly, age up and try again next year.

If you succeed with your audition, you'll receive a pop-up telling you you've been offered an exclusive contract to produce music. If the genre isn't rap music, turn it down and keep auditioning until it's a rap singer contract. Accept this to become a rapper.

From here, becoming famous will depend on whether you have the Hollywood Star. If you do, you'll instantly become famous without releasing a single album. Otherwise, produce music and perform concerts yearly until your character becomes famous if you don't have the Hollywood Star. It may take a few years, but it's generally much easier in BitLife's music industry than with other professions.

Turn a friend into an enemy

Throughout your life, you had the chance to make friends through school and random pop-ups. To make one of them your enemy, head into Relationships, select a friend, and tap their name to find a Change Our Status button. Pick enemies and confirm your choice to knock out this challenge. Your new enemy will now start annoying you occasionally throughout your character's life, so what you do with them is up to you.

Make millions while going on tour

Shortly after you become a rapper, you'll unlock a job menu for this career. Selecting this through your job menu will show options such as making a new album, putting on a live concert, and practicing your skills. For this task, select Tour after raising your fame and popularity to embark on a World Tour. You can do this once a year, netting you money that scales with your popularity. Embark on these tours each year until you have one that rewards you with $1 milliom in net earnings.

Have three records go platinum

The fifth task of BitLife's Unlike Us challenge is the most difficult to complete. Your goal is to have at least three records—Singles or Albums—go platinum. This goal is almost completely random, with factors like your genre, cover art, and random event response slightly contributing to your success.

BitLife platinum record
Screenshot by Destructoid

To put this into perspective, my character's first album went double platinum instantly. I chose hip-hop as my genre, a black and white image of my character as the cover art, and picked a random name for the album. I used a similar strategy the following year and didn't even hit gold.

There's some randomness to it, and it's mostly a matter of persistence and determination to hit three platinum records. Fortunately, even records that were previously Gold or Diamond can reach platinum in later years as you become more popular, so don't stress if you go several decades with only one or two.

Once you become a famous rapper with three platinum records and a friend-turned-enemy, you'll complete BitLife's Unlike Us challenge and receive a random cosmetic prize for future characters.

Palia coming to Steam

The Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow quest is one of the many new additions to Palia as part of the Elderwood region, but it's a difficult task to find it.

Unlike the other quests available as part of the expansion, Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow is a hidden mission. You'll have to reach a specific location to find this quest first, before proceeding with the required steps to complete it and unlock the rewards.

Palia Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow quest walkthrough

To start the quest, gain access to the Elderwood region. If you're just getting started with the game, reaching the expansion content will take some time. Go to the Okanna Bog in Elderwood, and you'll come across a set of ruins, and the crate will be located next to it. The crate is hidden from certain angles, so look carefully.

Okanaa Bog location in Palia
Screenshot by Destructoid

Open the crate, and it will automatically trigger the quest. The information will state that the item is supposed to reach someone in Kilima, but the recipient's identity will be hidden. The item was sent from someone called Tarkaa, and you won't find any information about the contents inside the package.

The next step is to reach the Kilima Village. You can fast travel to the Central Stables location if that facility is available. Otherwise, it will take you longer to reach the required locations. Without this guide, you'll have to go and speak with every villager to learn more about the package. The villager you'll need to find is Mayor Kenli. Mayor Kenli is located in the Mayor's office inside the City Hall.

Kenli in Palia 6
Screenshot via Singularity 6

When you start speaking with Kenli, he will mention the package when asked if he ordered anything from Tarkaa. The package contains a spray-on wig, which is perhaps why the quest is named like this. The last step is to wait for a letter to arrive from Kenli in your mailbox.

Once you find the letter in your mailbox, read it to learn more about his hair. This will complete the quest and reward you with the Aristocrat Mirror that can be added to your base. If you're looking to complete more quests in the Elderwood region, the Parental Dispute is a great one to take part in.
