PCGamesN Sunday, September 22, 2024 12:41 PM It's been five years since the first Atelier Ryza game launched, bringing its charming blend of colorful anime designs, JRPG combat, and satisfying alchemy to our PCs. That initial entry was far from the first game to bear the Atelier name, which dates all the way back to 1997, yet its most recent trilogy has earned it much more attention among a Western audience. To commemorate the anniversary, Koei Tecmo Games has given all three games a polish, with optimization updates, quality-of-life features, and additional improvements. PCGamesN Sunday, September 22, 2024 12:23 PM When I was seven, I tore up a Winged Dragon of Ra Yu-Gi-Oh! card. I was moping at the top of the stairs, upset with my brother about something. When his back was turned I ripped the card in half, treating the now-unplayable Egyptian God card as recompense for whatever slight he'd bestowed upon me. I remember this story all these years later because it fills me with regret, and while we have another Winged Dragon of Ra we play with today, I often wonder how much that un-ripped card is worth. Steam's newest simulation hit, TCG Card Shop Simulator, answers that exact question by letting you run a store yourself - and it's exploding on Steam. PCGamesN Sunday, September 22, 2024 11:58 AM There's lots of fantastic roguelike deckbuilders out there, from the iconic Slay the Spire to new, distinctive offerings such as Balatro. But a real joy of mine has been the rise of the dice-based roguelike - the likes of Dicey Dungeons, Dice and Fold, and the beautiful Astrea: Six-Sided Oracles, which is celebrating a full year since launch by introducing a new daily run feature alongside the ability to build your own custom runs. "If you are someone who likes endless replayability, you will love this update," developer Little Leo Games says. PCGamesN Sunday, September 22, 2024 10:52 AM Gray Zone Warfare developer Madfinger Games didn't expect to sell a million copies of its open-world tactical shooter quite so soon after its launch, but it quickly propelled the new FPS game into the conversation among the likes of Escape From Tarkov, The Division, and Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon series. As it prepares to deploy its first major update, introducing a full day/night cycle complete with plenty of suitable gear, I sat down at Gamescom 2024 with Madfinger PR director Rick Lagnese and community manager Corey Smith to talk about the game's success and its place in the hardcore military FPS space. PCGamesN Sunday, September 22, 2024 10:30 AM We've been here before - for the last 17 years, ever since Half-Life: Episode Two concluded, rumors, speculation, and hope for Half-Life 3 have swirled like the dark energy vortex about the Citadel. Recently, we've seen a few teases, a few hints, that suggest something, maybe, might be on the way. Even if it doesn't arrive imminently, I'm still confident Valve will make Half-Life 3, or at least another Half-Life game, eventually. With that in mind, it feels like time to replay and re-appreciate the original and the first sequel. We've looked at the data - a lot of people who have the Half-Life series in their Steam libraries haven't ever actually booted the games up. But if you got Half-Life, HL2, the Episodes, or any of the expansions in a bundle and you've left them alone, now is the time to take them down from the shelf. There are still, all these years later, some of the most influential FPS games of all time. MORE FROM PCGAMESN: Best old games, Best FPS games, Best VR games |
PCGamesN Sunday, September 22, 2024 10:22 AM Skyrim mods come in all shapes and sizes: for every DLC-scale quest mod we also get tiny, mechanical shifts in how we play the RPG. Even unassuming mods can prove to be the most popular. A simple change to the UI has over 17 million downloads, for example. To me, this is the beauty of the still-thriving community as even after 11 years, we're finding ways to rewrite our experience across Tamriel. Today, another small creation with huge ambition grabbed my attention, and if utilized properly it could change how we interact with Skyrim mods forever. PCGamesN Sunday, September 22, 2024 7:30 AM It's only September, but Enotria: The Last Song has got me thinking about the end-of-year PCGamesN awards. More specifically, I'm thinking about our award for Best 7/10. This hallowed category has seen Metal Hellsinger, Outriders, and Marvel's Avengers receive a certain eminence that Elden Ring, God of War, and Baldur's Gate 3 could never hope to achieve. With enough time, money, and talent, any studio can strive for perfection – and if all those unruly stars align, it might even come close enough to touch. The line between unlikely success and abject failure is arguably more difficult to walk. Enotria: The Last Song dances on it with wanton abandon. Yen Press picks up quite a few isekai manga and manhwa, but they can all manage to feel different. In Another World, My Sister Stole My Name is one of the latest, with volume 1 out now, and it's a manga with a compelling mystery. Siblings end up spirited away to another world at different times. However, once our heroine Ichika gets there, constant questions about her, her sister, the two princes they're set to marry, and the world keep coming up. It constantly keeps you wondering what's going on, preparing all these threads for us to follow up on in later volumes.
Editor's Note: There will be mild spoilers for the first volume of the In Another World, My Sister Stole My Name manga.
Before Ichika and her sister Karen ever get spirited away to another world in this isekai manga, we already know something is up in In Another World, My Sister Stole My Name. Ichika found a magical mirror, and it is one which allows her to communicate with a person in that world. It's a young prince named Cecil. They share stories about themselves and their world together. It's a bit of an unusual situation though, since he's a child and she's a teenager and later adult! Ichika kept it mostly a secret, but told her little sister Karen everything.
However, one day the mirror and Karen disappeared. Everyone was distraught. And then… Ichika found herself teleported to that other world as well. It turns out that in addition to the spacial difference between realms, there's a discrepancy with regards to time too. So Prince Cecil is a grown man. It's also the sort of manga where isekai situations are normal, with the people who come over being accepted among the nobility due to them having the unique ability to use Hallowed Magic.
The first mystery, right off the bat, is Karen stealing Ichika's identity and name in In Another World, My Sister Stole My Name. From what we see in the early chapters in their "home" world, Karen and Ichika seemed close. The two seemed to get along rather well. So yes, Karen going off of what she knew about Ichika's stories makes sense. But why go to such lengths? Why would there be such animosity? Especially as we start to see the treatment between the two sisters throughout this first volume.
The second involves the two princes. There's Cecil, who we know about. However, after being brought over to the other world, Ichika is promptly engaged to his brother Prince Noah. However, Noah despises not only Ichika's sister Karen, but Ichika herself. The venomous nature of it is so curious. There are hints offered throughout, so some of the future threads are teased even in this first volume. But the fact that we're confronted with that kind of attitude from the start invites curiosity.
But the nature of this isekai story and Ichika's summoning are the main mysteries in the In Another World, My Sister Stole My Name manga. The mirror is a clear tie between the worlds. Once Ichika is there, we learn about past events and travelers. This is a regular occurrence, which is curious. However, so is the fact that Ichika is even there. Karen already had the mirror and was summoned. That artifact was missing. How did Ichika end up there? Why did she get pulled through as well? What will happen now that two Hallowed Saints capable of using the magic of saviors are there?
It really makes me wish we knew more about the future of In Another World, My Sister Stole My Name, as due to the age of the manga and circumstances, only the first volume of this isekai story is available. Yen Press doesn't have a release window for the second yet. Given how many cliffhangers and unresolved questions the first volume introduces, I'm finding it so difficult to know I'll need to wait for more.
Volume 1 of In Another World, My Sister Stole My Name is available now via Yen Press, and there's no release date for the second volume of the manga yet.
