New Metroid Dread Teaser Released
A brief new teaser for Nintendo's Metroid Dread hints at the dangers Samus Aran will have to overcome in this new adventure.
The first new 2D Metroid story in 19 years, Metroid Dread once again features intergalactic bounty hunter Samus Aran. She finds herself on the planet ZDR after a mysterious transmission was sent to the Galactic Federation, only to find alien lifeforms and mechanical menaces have made this place their home.
DNA-extracting research machines known as the E.M.M.I. are on the hunt to take Samus down, and she must find a way to survive by any means necessary. Along the way, she will parkour over obstacles, slide through tight spaces, counter enemies, and fight through the dangers of the planet.

NEO: The World Ends With You Review
Fourteen years after Neku paid a visit to Shibuya on the Nintendo DS, Square Enix's NEO: The World Ends With You is finally here. Was it worth the wait, or is this locale a bit played out? Check out our review and find out.
NEO: The World Ends With You Review
I'll start by saying I didn't play the first game and didn't see any recap here. That being said, I was never lost in the story; you'll just know certain characters from the original title.
NEO: The World Ends With You (TWEWY) starts with an introduction to the main character Rindo. He is hanging out around town when he gets a text from his friend Tosai to meet up. So they meet up, and Tosai gives you a rare Reaper Medal. Rindo and Tosai go to meet up with another person, when Rindo suddenly gets a vision of destruction. Moments later, both Rindo and Tosai are tossed into the Reaper's Game. The Reaper's Game is an alternate universe that takes place alongside the current universe.
In this universe, monsters attack the people currently playing the game. Using your badges, you and Tosai fight off these monsters until you get some more allies to join up in the fight. The game's goal is simple: complete the missions and defeat the big enemies before the other teams to get more points. Winning means you get your wish granted, and losing means you disappear. Oh, and you are told you only have a week to do it; no pressure. In all, the story will easily run you 30-40 hours.
NEO: TWEWY is an action RPG at its core, but the battles are still instanced. When you get into the fight, the combat is real-time, and you control multiple characters at once. Before going into a battle, you equip your badges that count as your attacks. You can only have one badge equipped at first – it might seem limited, but I understand why they did it this way. When fighting, you only use a single button to attack with each character, but you control multiple characters at once.
At first, it is only two of you, and you use simple buttons to attack like square and triangle. Eventually, as you fill out your team, you start to use multiple buttons simultaneously. For instance, my team has an L1, R1, square, and triangle attack pattern. However, L1 and R1 can be charged, so I have to hold those buttons down while building up my combo with my other attacks. My hands had to get used to this type of playstyle, which admittedly took a couple of hours. If I could use multiple buttons per character, it'd be overwhelming. It works extremely well when you get your bearing and find the right combos.
Collecting the badges, you use in combat has become one of the chief driving factors for me in the game. Switching up attacks and seeing what they did in combat was fun. Sure, you have some stinkers, but most of them were enjoyable to use once or twice. The big driver for me was the fact that some of them evolve into new and more powerful attacks. I had one that would toss a rock down on someone, and when it changed, the rock becomes a whole car. They don't all evolve, but the ones that do will keep you grinding for a while.
Outside of combat, you will solve puzzles for the Reaper's Game. These involve finding graffiti, getting certain meals or outfits, delivering items, or fighting enemies. Sometimes you have to use your character's powers as well. For example, Rindo can alter time forwards and backward, to collect items or learn passwords. Tosai can put pictures together in people's heads to help them remember. Another character literally invades people's thoughts to get clues or help out on side quests. Each of them has a tiny puzzle attached, so oftentimes it isn't just a button click.
While doing side quests will net you more cash and EXP, the bigger bonus comes from your social network. Doing side missions nets you Friend Points that you can spend on your network. After helping someone out, they join your network, and you can spend your points on them to get various buffs. When you are close to a new friend, you can also see what you need to do to get them in your network. Some buffs are passive, like converting your cash pins into actual cash, while others provide tactical advantages in combat. It might sound like a minor thing, but it kept me doing the side quests.
There are a few other side things to do as well. Food gives permanent buffs, so keeping your team fed is essential. Each character has a specific kind of food they like as well, so finding their favorite is helpful. There is also an extra stat known as Style. Style points help you unlock perks on new clothes you wear. You start off with something like 20 style points, and some of the clothes require over 100 style to give you an extra benefit. The question early on is do you want to get something with low Style to get the bonus buff, or just take the raw strength and defense.
NEO: TWEWY is a very stylish game; from the art to the music, it oozes character. Some of the design choices are questionable, but it all works for the most part. The weirdest one for me was the camera angle. You can't move the camera around, and it has a very low angle. While traveling the streets, the buildings bend almost like it is a fisheye camera angle. It isn't game-breaking, but it isn't something I've seen in other games before.
NEO: The World Ends With You is a unique and colorful action RPG that packs a fun combat system. While it's certainly not for everyone, those drawn to its stylish vibe will absolutely love it.

Axiom Verge 2 Breach Gameplay Trailer Released
See the dimension shifting mechanic of Thomas Happ Games' Axiom Verge 2 with the latest trailer for the game.
The developer recently released a blog that highlights this new exploration mechanic. He stated that he wanted to push himself and try something ambitious, creating a game where there are two worlds in one.
Originally featured in a cutscene from the original game, to the right of the breach is a region of space that originally kept the denizens of Sudra safe from the outside universe. Players will be able to enter and exit the breach, discovering how that world is connected to the overworld. Featuring blockier tiles and a completely different look, Axiom Verge 2 has been designed so that it is more like two games in one. Note that for each location in the breach, there is a corresponding point in the overworld, adding an extra dimension to its design.

The almighty Ash Williams taught horror aficionados to never read cursed books, but Good Gate Media and Wales Interactive must not be Evil Dead fans after releasing their new title Night Book. A full motion video tale about an evil tome, is this occult tale devilishly good or unspeakably bad?
Night Book Review
Things aren't going so hot for the protagonist Loralyn. She's struggling with her translation work at Glossa Lingua, she's getting a little worried about her pregnancy, her partner Pearce is working hard on the Le Pouce development, and her father Alecis is struggling with mental health issues.
However, things quickly go from bad to worse when an ancient book written in Kannar is read aloud. After this cursed book is read aloud, evil spirits possess Loralyn's father and make her life a living hell.
It's a tale horror fans have no doubt seen before in classic media, and Night Book does nothing new to stand out. The development team stated that the title was filmed entirely in lockdown, and it shows. Outside of a few special effects, the entirety of the game is shown through webcams on a computer pointing to rooms, apartments, and offices. This isn't so bad in and of itself – Paranormal Activity used a similar approach to great success – but it just feels amateurish in this case.
The poor acting makes things that much worse. Everybody in Night Book just feels bored reading the script, lacking any sort of emotion with danger afoot. Moments where Loralyn is supposed to be hysterical make it seem like she was unprepared. There are a lot of awkward pauses mid-line too across multiple members of the cast, making it seem like they forgot their lines or the teleprompter acted up. Even moments with possession lack the punch needed to really seal the deal.
As players progress through this FMV adventure, they'll have a limited time to choose between two different options. Some are a bit more on the tame side, like choosing whether to translate something literally or interpret the general meeting. However, there are other choices that determine things on a grander scale, like whether to give her father a sedative. Every key junction lets players know from the get-go, with a "Butterfly Effect" notification popping up after each major branch.
While these choices help add some variety – there are 15 different endings and 223 scenes in all – Night Book suffers from the illusion of choice. There were times where our choices led to awkward scenarios, making it feel like our decisions really didn't matter. It's understandable with a full motion video title like this that has so many different options, but the title should have been more diligent in tying up these loose ends.
It's not like players will be diving into this title for the long haul, however; our initial playthrough clocked in at less than an hour. While this was no doubt done to encourage replayability, it also forces the title along at a breakneck pace. There's little at stake when a conflict is solved in 10 minutes, and some of the things that occur will make people confused as to the sheer speed of it all. Some sort of transition would have gone a long way.
If you've got the slightest interest in the horror genre, you've already seen what Night Book has to offer. The idea of a full motion video tale with multiple endings is a noble one, but the poor acting and breakneck pace ruin its chances of ever standing out.

Pistol Whip's Smoke and Thunder Cinematic Campaign Coming August 12
Grab your VR headsets – the second cinematic campaign for Cloudhead Games' Pistol Whip, Smoke and Thunder, will make its debut on August 12, 2021.
While Pistol Whip's first update 2089 brought players into the future, this five scene cinematic campaign will take players into the past as they take part in an immersive Western adventure. Players will get acquainted with the sisters Jessie (voiced by Victoria Hogan, Kingdom Come: Deliverance) and Tess (voiced by Avalon Penrose, Hades).
To bring the experience to life, illustrations by fan-favorite comic artist Fico Ossio and colourist Raciel Avila will make their appearance. The Heavy, Black Pistol Fire, Bones UK, Devora, and Magic Sword have also lent their talents to the game's soundtrack.
New to the game is the "Styles" system sandbox, which gives players the chance to combine their preferred weapon type with up to five modifiers to make the action to their liking. Players can also challenge friends or compete solo, proving their mettle with leaderboards that have been uniquely generated for that "Style's" choice.
These styles include Brawler, which transforms the previous No Ammo modifier into a melee mode. The Burstfire from 2089, along with the new weapons from "Smoke & Thunder" will also be available in all scenes with Styles. Featured Styles, which will pay host to weekly style choices curated by Cloudhead's developers and players, will also be included.
