PCGamesN Thursday, June 9, 2022 6:52 PM The Xbox Bethesda Showcase start time is almost here, a collection of announcements about upcoming games headed to Xbox, PC, and Game Pass over the course of the next several months. The showcase is part of Summer Game Fest 2022, but it's essentially what we would've gotten if E3 still existed – and may get again in 2023, if the Entertainment Software Association has its way – though what Microsoft and its studios has in store remains something of a mystery. Previously, Bethesda planned on showing Starfield footage for the first time. With the space RPG delayed until 2023, though, it's unclear whether Bethesda will go ahead with its original intention, hence why some fans are making their own Starfield trailers to ease the pain of waiting. Xbox itself has a number of projects in the works, from Rare's troubled Everwild to Avowed from Obsidian and the Forza franchise. In previous years, Xbox also highlighted third-party games such as Tales of Arise and Scarlet Nexus during its spotlight, so we may see some surprises from other developers as well. PCGamesN Thursday, June 9, 2022 5:48 PM Naughty Dog's acclaimed action-adventure game The Last of Us is finally making its way to PC with a ground-up remake - titled The Last of Us Part I. The game, which focuses on the story of Joel and Ellie as they scrap their way through the nightmarish post-apocalyptic wasteland and contend with human enemies and those infected by the fungal Cordyceps, is set to release on PS5 on September 2, with a PC version in development and set to follow "shortly thereafter." Appearing on stage at Summer Game Fest, lead designer Neil Druckmann talked about the game's redesign, with overhauled models and animations, brand-new enemy AI, and redone combat. The game, which was originally released in 2013, was already a visual spectacle at the time but certainly looks a lot more polished in this new reveal. The announcement trailer shows off the game's overhauled look and improved facial animations in detail, including some footage from the game's Left Behind DLC, which focuses on Ellie and her friend Riley during the time just prior to the main game. |
PCGamesN Thursday, June 9, 2022 4:02 PM The Last of Us HBO is the most authentic video game show to date, series creator Neil Druckmann said during Summer Game Fest 2022. Druckmann made the comments after teasing a new Last of Us multiplayer game and said the chemistry between lead actors Pedro Pascal, who plays Joel Miller, and Bella Ramsey, starring as Ellie, felt similar to the relationship between Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson on set in the original game. As for when we can expect to finally watch The Last of Us on HBO, it might be sooner than you think. Summer Game Fest showrunner Geoff Keighley asked Druckmann when there may be more news, Druckmann said "you'll hear about it very soon." He also brought Williams and Baker onstage for a brief moment and revealed both actors have roles as new, unannounced characters in the game. Williams briefly commented on what it was like seeing other people play these roles. "Pedro and Bella were so perfect," Williams said. It's like the characters coming to life, but it's so much more than that, I can't really explain it. It's going to be so good." |
PCGamesN Thursday, June 9, 2022 5:39 PM FPS survival game Nightingale has shown off its realm cards system in a new gameplay trailer at Summer Game Fest. The realm cards system lets players craft and use a variety of cards to open portals - though they must also tackle large, devastating monsters that are lumbering about in the crafting game's void between realms. "You're alone in the realms, I'm afraid - the portals are a mess. Not even sure if Nightingale made it." Such are the words of the trailer's voiceover, which goes on to explain how players can use rare resources to craft realm cards which can then be used to open portals to "the inter-realmic void." Card selection can be used to influence your destination. The trailer shows off some open world gameplay across a variety of environments, with the character taking potshots at bears, spiders, and other monsters as the player hunts, builds fires, and crafts to survive. The trailer ends on the player holding a pocket watch and clicking their fingers, before panning to a spooky shot of an ornate statue with a skull face. |
PCGamesN Thursday, June 9, 2022 5:03 PM HoYoverse debuted a new Honkai Star Rail trailer showing off a brand-new location, another look at its characters and central space hub, and some of the fast-paced action in its upcoming turn-based RPG. We're still not entirely sure what's going on, but judging from the trailer, we can expect plenty of incredible locales, with massive, themed spaceships that look almost like entire cities on their own, along with plenty of drama and fraught relationships between characters. Honkai Star Rail is based in the Honkai Impact world, but rather than being an action RPG like Honkai and Genshin Impact, Star Rail is a turn-based game. HoYoverse is currently running the game's second open beta, though we're not yet sure when Honkai Star Rail will release. What we do know is that the massive ship at the end of the new trailer is called Xianzhou Lufou. HoYoverse said in a press release following the trailer's debut that Xianzhou Lufou is a "significant" realm that we'll be able to visit soon, and it's presumably not the only one of its kind. PCGamesN Thursday, June 9, 2022 5:26 PM Digital Extremes appeared on the stage at Summer Game Fest to talk about the latest update for Warframe, The Duviri Paradox, which will be demonstrated in full at Tenno Live during the upcoming Tennocon 2022 on July 16. The Duviri Paradox, which was initially revealed at Tennocon 2019, is an open-world expansion for the RPG game that has been long anticipated by the game's community. The reveal trailer is very teasery and doesn't give away too much, with a black-and-white flashback to a shaggy-haired, bearded warrior fighting an enemy on horseback, before they take the horse for themself and ride it across the land. A giant space worm is shown weaving through the sky, and there is a flash across several characters before the shot settles on two swords embedded into the ground. Fans of Warframe have been awaiting more news on this expansion, which has been delayed for a while due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the team's transition to working from home, so they will doubtless be glad to know that more details are on the way soon. PCGamesN Thursday, June 9, 2022 5:19 PM As expected, a new Zenless Zone Zero trailer debuted during Summer Game Fest 2022, highlighting an extensive look at ZZZ's combat and some of the Hollows, enemies you'll be facing off against during your time in the action RPG and a few of the extra-flashy, high-tech characters who call the city their home. That said, we still don't actually know what the Hollows are. They seem to be a mix of organic and mechanical lifeforms, with Hollows ranging from humanoid figures to giant robots bedecked with guns and other devices meant only to destroy everything in sight. Zenless Zone Zero is something of a departure from Genshin Impact. In place of Teyvat's vast open spaces and themed regions, the game unfolds in an urban setting more akin to Square Enix's The World Ends With You, with ramen shops, video stores, and the densely packed metropolis of New Eridu as its central setting. While the trailer didn't show much of it, the Hollows are what power your special abilities, after the playable characters absorb their ether and repurpose it for more constructive activities. PCGamesN Thursday, June 9, 2022 3:21 PM Following Humankind's first downloadable pack, Cultures of Africa, the 4X game is heading across the Atlantic Ocean for the second Humankind DLC, Cultures of Latin America. Announced at the Summer Game Fest showcase, the next update for Humankind is out now and adds six new cultures from across the history of Southern and Central America to Amplitude's strategy game. The new DLC includes the ancient era culture the Caralans, established as the oldest-known civilization in the Americas. Next up is classical era culture the Nazca, known for their construction of underground aqueducts for desert irrigation and their vast desert designs called Nazca Lines. The medieval eva culture is Taino, who were the prinicipal inhabitants of most of the Caribbean during that period of history. The DLC's early modern era culture is the Inca, regarded as the largest empire in pre-Columbian America and famed for their impressive stone architecture. Finally, the two modern cultures joining Humankind with this DLC are the industrial era Argentinians, likely set around the time of the country's modernisation and economic development, and the contemporary era Cubans. PCGamesN Thursday, June 9, 2022 3:15 PM Want to know the Marvel's Midnight Suns release date? This new strategy game from the creators of XCOM: Enemy Unknown and XCOM 2 aims to uniquely capture the energy of superhero combat in a turn-based strategy game. It involves tactical battles, and a real time RPG layer where you can walk around your home base, talk to other superheroes, upgrade your gear, and hunt for secrets and hidden content. Marvel's Midnight Suns release date was announced during Summer Games Fest, and it's going to be a slow four months as we wait to get our hands-on the game again. We had the chance to check out Midnight Suns' opening gameplay, and while it might not be XCOM 3, it's certainly shaping up to be more than just a cash-in on a popular IP. It's not just the release date that we know about - 2K and Firaxis have shared details on other aspects as well, such as post-launch DLC plans, as well as the playable roster of heroes at launch. We've put together a quick guide on everything we know about the game at this stage, and we'll keep it up-to-date as more information is announced. PCGamesN Thursday, June 9, 2022 4:41 PM You've got to hand it to Coffee Stain: the studio knows how to commit to the bit. Years after the deliberately buggy Goat Simulator's release on - when else - April 1st 2014, Goat Simulator 3 has been announced. Despite there never having been a Goat Simulator 2. The host of Summer Games Fest 2022, Geoff Keighley, was also in on the fun, teasing watching audiences with an update on a "much-anticipated sequel". The broadcast then cut to a figure preparing for a jog along a sunny boardwalk in tribute to the memorable 2014 announce trailer for Dead Island 2, which has been in limbo ever since its publisher Deep Silver was acquired by THQ Nordic. But rather than zombies, it was goats wreaking havoc wreaking havoc in the background: butting into pedestrians, flying around in jetpacks, and attacking kayak rental shops with laser beams. The trailer concludes not with the hapless jogger transforming into a zombie, but stepping in the goats' leavings and receiving a headbutt. The Goat Simulator 3 release window is fall 2022 and it's coming to the Epic Game Store (as well as Xbox and PlayStation), where you can wishlist it now. |
PCGamesN Thursday, June 9, 2022 5:41 PM Stormgate is a brand new free-to-play RTS game from Frost Giant Studios, a group of ex Blizzard and StarCraft devs that includes "three player open-ended co-op" as well as 3-on-3 multiplayer matches. The game is built in Unreal Engine 5 and is very evocative of Blizzard's beloved StarCraft strategy game series. Players who are interested can register now for a 2023 beta. The announcement trailer shows a human researcher talking to a small robot drone, who is scanning environments to create holographic reconstructions of several statues and other structures. As the hologram is formed, shards of metal fly together and form a large shield with a crystal in the centre, but as the shield is picked up a large winged demon flies in and attacks the researcher. At the last moment, a mech suit with a jetpack flies in and unloads a hail of bullets into the demon, before firing off a final missile salvo and carrying the researcher off into the sky. Production developer Tim Morten describes the titular Stormgates as "portals that open during massive solar storms that unleash the infernal host on future Earth." He and his team previously worked on StarCraft II, deciding to move on from Blizzard when it seemed unlikely that StarCraft 3 was going to happen any time soon. |
PCGamesN Thursday, June 9, 2022 3:00 PM Marvel's Midnight Suns is nothing if not brave. It's brave enough trying to create a Marvel videogame at all given the popularity of this IP, and braver still to make it a strategy game based on one of the most niche comic runs from the '90s. And considering this particular development team is known for XCOM, Firaxis achieves peak bravery by going off in completely new directions - adding an overworld RPG layer and a brand-new turn-based combat system, to name but two. But as the saying goes, fortune favours the brave. I've spent the lion's share of an afternoon playing through the opening sections of Midnight Suns, and I can say that this unique turn-based strategy game will defy any expectations you've formed since the original announcement. The basics are still as were revealed during the announcement. You lead a team of Marvel superheroes as The Hunter, your avatar. This fully customisable hero will lead the actual greatest crossover event in history from a stronghold known as The Abbey, which is a hub area and the linchpin for Firaxis' brand-new RPG mechanics. Unlike in XCOM, you can walk around this space in real time, talk to individual heroes, and explore the grounds looking for secrets, gear upgrades, and banter. PCGamesN Thursday, June 9, 2022 3:22 PM If you're still kind of bummed that Firaxis' new strategy game, Marvel's Midnight Suns, is not XCOM 3, then don't worry - the studio hasn't forgotten about the science fiction series. But its new Marvel tactical RPG was "too good" an opportunity to pass up, according to senior franchise producer Garth DeAngelis. "We just had this opportunity that was placed on our lap," DeAngelis says. According to creative director Jake Solomon, Marvel approached Firaxis about getting the XCOM studio to create a game using the IP. This was around 2017, the year Firaxis released the War of the Chosen expansion for XCOM 2. "It's totally natural to say, where else can we go? And frankly, that's a blessing. That's a good problem to have," DeAngelis admits. As much as XCOM 3 would have been a logical next step, it seems fate - and Solomon's legendary passion for all things Marvel - intervened, and so the studio pivoted to Midnight Suns instead. "We can explore new territory that's exciting," DeAngelis points out, "these things that XCOM 3 aren't necessarily about that we can do with this IP are incredibly exciting. We can blaze new ground there." |
PCGamesN Thursday, June 9, 2022 3:15 PM Marvel's Midnight Suns' character roster is basically complete now that Spider-Man and Scarlet Witch have been confirmed, but if you're worried your favourite superhero hasn't made the cut don't worry - it's possible they'll make it into Firaxis' upcoming Marvel strategy game as DLC. "There are more characters coming post release," confirms senior franchise producer Garth DeAngelis. "We have four heroes in the works… they're gonna have their own story missions, they're gonna have the full gameplay suite. So all new abilities that you'll be able to bring into your decks as well as developing friendships with them and relationships and things like that." These characters will likely come as part of the season pass announced today during Summer Game Fest. DeAngelis stopped short of confirming the identities of the new heroes, but Midnight Suns already contains characters from several areas of Marvel fandom - The Avengers, X-Men, New Mutants, and heroes like Blade and Ghost Rider. DeAngelis also says that Marvel has been really easy to work with, and the implication is Firaxis has free reign to introduce any characters it feels it has the resources to do so. PCGamesN Thursday, June 9, 2022 5:31 PM Square Enix showed off a first look at Outriders Worldslayer co-op during the Summer Game Fest 2022, and while we still don't know too much about what to expect when the mode drops, we do know it's not landing alone. Outriders Worldslayer co-op will release alongside new environments, new enemies, and more. The new Outriders Worldslayer co-op trailer showcased a bit of what to expect, including some impressive team combos, powerful, sometimes mildly terrifying, enemies, and gorgeous environments. Worldslayer also revamps your skills with a new set of abilities and tweaks to how they perform, along with more ambitious plans for Outriders' endgame and long-term progression. We don't yet know what these might be, but Square Enix promised to show even more on June 10 during the latest episode of the Outriders Broadcast. "Facing the challenges of Enoch in co-op takes the intense action to the next level. Drop-in and drop-out at any time and experience the new environments, new enemies and new features of OUTRIDERS WORLDSLAYER in single player or in co-op with your friends." PCGamesN Thursday, June 9, 2022 5:01 PM New horror game Fort Solis has been revealed at Summer Game Fest, and it is being described as "Dead Space meets Duncan Jones's Moon." This new sci-fi action space game from Fallen Leaf and Black Drakkar Games certainly delivers on that promise in its initial trailer, with tense, over the shoulder exploration and and an ominous sense of atmosphere. The reveal trailer shows a figure in a space suit investigating the seemingly abandoned base of Fort Solis, before clashing against a mysterious figure and then being shown desperately trying to scramble their way through corridors flooded with red lighting. They are then shown recording a voice message to the camera: "Something is going on here, and I need to find out what it is." Non-specifically tantalising, indeed. The game stars notable voice actors Troy Baker and Roger Clark, the latter best known for his role as protagonist Arthur Morgan in cowboy epic Red Dead Redemption 2. Baker is playing a medical officer called Wyatt Taylor, stationed at Fort Solis - he says that his character will be "in opposition, at times, to Roger's character," who goes by the name of Jack Leary. Leary is a maintenance engineer on a remote Mars mining post, whose job is to make sure none of the equipment breaks down on the graveyard shift. |
PCGamesN Thursday, June 9, 2022 2:42 PM Microids debuted a Flashback 2 trailer during Summer Game Fest 2022, an unexpected sequel to the classic 1990s sci-fi game, and it's launching in winter 2022 for PC and console. The trailer showcases a bit of what to expect nearly three decades since the original launched, and it's a mashup of space races, third-person shooter action, and giant mechs that looks rather promising. While details are still a bit thin on the ground at the moment, Microids confirmed in a press release that Flashback 2 still follows the adventurer scientist Conrad B. Hart 30 years after he fought to return to Earth. Conrad defeated the Master Brain in his first outing, but the Morph threat is back and more dangerous than ever. While Flashback 2 is a direct sequel to the original, Microids said it's still welcoming to newcomers with plenty to offer longtime fans. "Flashback 2 will welcome players to discover a brand new story blending action, puzzle and infiltration," the team said in a press release. "This adventure will take you to familiar places like Neo Washington or the Jungle, as well as new locations like Neo Tokyo or a mysterious space station." |
PCGamesN Thursday, June 9, 2022 5:02 PM A new Alien game titled Aliens: Dark Descent from Focus Entertainment and Tindalos Interactive has been announced at Summer Game Fest. The tense, atmospheric trailer shows a group of humans exploring a quiet, dishevelled base that is overgrown and covered with gunk, before confronting a group of screaming Xenomorphs in head-on combat. The tone certainly feels more Aliens than Alien, with plenty of guns and a focus on action. A brief gameplay clip at the end of the trailer shows gameplay taking place from a top-down, isometric perspective, with four humans standing together against the onrushing alien hordes, acid blood spilling from the foes as they go down. The game's Steam store page describes Aliens: Dark Descent as a "squad-based, single-player game" where you must lead your soldiers in real-time combat against both Xenomorphs and rogue Weyland-Yutani operatives, alongside "a host of horrifying creatures new to the Alien franchise." Players will assemble a squad of colonial marines with their own unique specialisations, weapons, and abilities. You can also upgrade your home base and research new tech to help kit out your team. |
PCGamesN Thursday, June 9, 2022 4:54 PM Striking Distance unveiled the first raw gameplay footage of The Callisto Protocol during Summer Game Fest 2022, but more importantly, Striking Distance CEO Glen Schofieled revealed The Callisto Protocol's gravity gun. The gravity gun is one among many weapons at your disposal in the fight to stay alive, and from what we've seen so far, it certainly sounds like the most interesting one. The Callisto Protocol's gravity gun pulls enemies towards you, as you'd expect from the name, and it also lets you shove them away into obstacles, including the giant fan blades that seem distressingly common throughout the ship. Schofield mentioned other abilities, including the option to tear enemies apart. It's gruesome, but we're not complaining. The Callisto Protocol is shaping up to be a brutal horror game, and anything that lets us survive just a smidgeon longer is fine by us. The remainder of the footage showed the protagonist solving a simple puzzle to activate some of the ubiquitous blades before meeting his end in their merciless grip. As you'd expect from Striking Distance, it's definitely not for the faint of heart. |

Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, June 9, 2022 6:58 PM Skate Story has been grinding along for a couple of years, promising a skateboarding game set in an ephemeral world of ghostly corridors and unending paths. The last we saw of it was back in 2020. It resurfaced tonight during Devolver's not-E3 showcase, and dang: it's transformed into one of the most beautiful games I've ever seen. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, June 9, 2022 6:53 PM Anger Foot. It's angry and there are certainly plenty of feet. From Free Lives, the creators of Broforce and Genital Jousting, it's so aggressively kicky that I don't feel like going near doors anytime soon. They describe it as a "lightning fast hard bass blast of kicking down doors and kicking ass". Good grief. Keep an eye on the threatening tootsies in the trailer below. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, June 9, 2022 5:55 PM I rarely feel as conflicted about a game as I do about Honkai: Star Rail. It's a turn-based RPG and I like those; but it's a JRPG and I dislike those. It's got a spacefaring train in it, which I always think is cute; but also it's got anime waifus in it and those make me cringe. Its new trailer, which you'll find below, is dynamic and exciting and well-edited; but... it's got cringy anime waifus in it. Watch it and make up your own mind. |

Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, June 9, 2022 4:57 PM Day Of The Devs is probably my favourite part of the summer games jamboree every year because it does wonders for the visibility of indie games and their developers. Slotting in snugly right after Geoff regaled us with the Summer Game Fest stream, this year's Day Of The Devs showcase marked the tenth anniversary. Tim Schafer and friends revealed more about some stonking looking indies from places as far apart as the Netherlands, Japan and Argentina. It was lovely to see some solo devs featured too, such as Madison Karrh with Birth, a point-and-click puzzler about loneliness, and Billy Basso's beautiful pixel-art Metroidvania Animal Well. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, June 9, 2022 4:36 PM Revealed tonight at Summer Game Fest, you can whet your appetite for the new Saints Row game by making your boss character right now. Described as "the ultimate body shop", Boss Factory is a free standalone demo you can access in The Epic Game Store (or by following a series of links through SaintsRow.com). In it you can have a ride on the character creator before the game comes out in August, and save your favourite and most bizarre looks. This was revealed with a trailer with all explosions and montages and that. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, June 9, 2022 4:26 PM Na-na-na-na-na-Nightwing! See, who misses Batman anymore? Not former ward and sidekick Dick Grayson, who was happily kicking faces and twirling about like the aerial gymnast he is at tonight's Summer Game Fest, live from Gotham City. Oh wait, that was new footage from Gotham Knights? Okay then, well, you better watch the trailer to find out more. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, June 9, 2022 4:19 PM The Last Of Us: Part One is heading to PC. The news leaked out earlier this evening but was then officially announced as part of the Summer Games Fest. The good news is that our favoured platform will receive the same fancified version as is being developed for PlayStation 5; the bad news is that while the PlayStation 5 version has a September 2nd release date, there's no confirmed date for the PC version yet. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, June 9, 2022 4:09 PM A new trailer for Warhammer 40,000: Darktide fresh out of the Summer Game Fest gives another look at the heretic-smashing cooperative shooter from the makers of Warhammer: Vermintide and yup, it looks like Vermintide in 40K. And that's fine. I'm good with that. That's great, really. Vermintide is fun but I've no affinity for Warhammer Fantasy so yes, give me bolters and Inquisitors and Ogryns and sci-fi Gothic cathedrals. See for yourself below. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, June 9, 2022 4:08 PM Get the Logitech G203 gaming mouse for £17.98 after a discount at Amazon UK - a good deal for an RGB mouse from one of the most popular mouse companies. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, June 9, 2022 4:05 PM As the Summer Game Fest machine churns ever onward, we got an extended look at Witchfire. I'm afraid I am now of the opinion that "dark fantasy first-person shooter" is one of the most underwhelming word combinations in the English language. But hey, it's a video, the game could be bananas good when it comes out, and I'm duty bound to tell you all about it in case you get really excited for it - and if you do, then good news, 'cos the video confirms it's coming to early access on the Epic Games Store soon (aiming for Q4 2022). |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, June 9, 2022 4:04 PM First came Golf Club Wasteland, a post-apocalyptic sports game from Demagog Studios where the world's remaining elite jetted around golf courses on the ruined surface of Earth. Then, earlier this year, they announced The Cub, a side-scrolling platformer telling a parallel story of one of the poor souls left behind on our home planet while the rest of humanity buggered off to Mars. Now, Demagog seem to be expanding their Wasteland-verse with a third entry: Highwater. It's not clear how this one relates to the others just yet, but it does feature a rather lovely yellow lifeboat in a flooded cityscape. Check out the reveal trailer below. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, June 9, 2022 3:56 PM You can't go wrong with this fast, affordable SSD. That was the strapline for James' review of the WD Blue SN570, a glowing writeup that culminated in the drive's instatement in the RPS 'best gaming SSD' hall of fame. Now, the capacious 2TB SN570 is 10% off for Father's Day in the US, where you can pick up the drive for $162 at the WD Store when you use code DADSDAY10. That's an awesome deal for an NVMe drive of this size and speed. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, June 9, 2022 3:48 PM Out Of The Blue's retro-styled dystopian puzzle game American Arcadia shared a little more footage of its creepily camera-laden city at tonight's Summer Game Fest showcase. The Seventies aesthetic and Milton Keynes-esque, city-of-the-future feel shown in previous looks at the game are still very much in evidence – those massive swan statues are boss, and nobody hates monorails, right? Take a Logan's Run at it yourself by watching the new trailer. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, June 9, 2022 3:42 PM Goat Simulator 3 was announced this evening during Geoff Keigh-3's Summer Game Fest. Yes, that's 3, despite there never being a Goat Simulator 2. The announcement trailer doesn't show anything in-game, but suggests it'll still be about causing havoc as a goat, only now with co-op and Epic Games Store exclusivity. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, June 9, 2022 3:40 PM Summer Game Fest just got scary with the announcement of psychological horror Layers Of Fears, the next instalment in Bloober Team's jump-fest series that might really be a remaster, sort of? Bloober say it's the "psychedelic experience fans know and love" and has "an expanded plotline", so this doesn't sound like an entirely new game. The freshly revealed Layers Of Fears is being built in Unreal Engine 5. As such, the trailer makes for pleasantly unpleasant viewing. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, June 9, 2022 3:21 PM In a very short and technically not at all sweet teaser trailer at the Summer Game Fest this year, we saw that terrible things are afoot in isolated space station Fort Solis. Honestly, why does anyone bother building isolated space stations? It's like getting married at Christmas in Albert Square at this point. Geoff was joined on stage by Roger Clark (who you will know from being Arthur Morgan in Red Dead Redemption) and Troy Baker (who you will know from, I dunno, throw a dart, you'll hit one) to briefly talk more about their characters and what the hap is heckening in this horror adventure game. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, June 9, 2022 3:18 PM Humankind is adding six new cultures to its historical strategy roster with the arrival of its second paid DLC pack, Amplitude Studios have announced at tonight's Summer Game Fest. It's also getting another major patch in the form of the "Bolivar Patch", that's focused on community features. But first, the DLC. This will explore the heritage of Latin America, letting players progress from the ancient era Caralans through to the Nazca, Taíno, Inca and contemporary Argentinians and Cubans. You needn't wait to dig in, either, as the Latin America pack is out right now on Steam and the Epic Games Store. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, June 9, 2022 3:13 PM Crikey, one thing I never expected to see at tonight's Summer Game Fest was a sequel to Delphine Software and U.S. Gold's cinematic sci-fi platformer Flashback, but there it was. Flashback 2 is coming from long-established French studio Microids, developers of the Syberia series. It's been 30 years now since the original game released on PC, and Geoff Keighley was very excited to re-announce the sequel. Check out the trailer below. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, June 9, 2022 3:08 PM Chance has always been an integral part of Firaxis' turn-based tactics games. Just ask the many thousands of players who missed a shot with a 90% success chance in one of their XCOM reboots. Marvel's Midnight Suns, however, could be the Civilization studio's biggest gamble yet. Not only is it their first game to mix substantial RPG elements into its tactical combat, but there's nary a hit percentage in sight. In the four hours I spent playing the opening of Midnight Suns last week, I saw precisely one scenario that had any kind of per cent number attached to it – and that was booting a goon (100%) or Venom, one of the newly confirmed villains of the game (0%), off a rooftop. All your other attacks, represented here as a deck of cards, are guaranteed hits. It's a strategic evolution I'll talk about in a second, but this switch-up in approach isn't the only part of Midnight Suns story that's been subject to the whims of (mis)fortune. No sooner had Firaxis announced the game it was delayed in the snap of Thanos' fingers (from March to the second half of 2022, now confirmed as October 7th at tonight's Summer Game Fest). But speaking to creative director Jake Solomon, the extra polishing time they set aside gave them an unexpected benefit. And it's all down to a fish witch called Wanda. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, June 9, 2022 3:06 PM The final heroes and villains of Marvel's Midnight Suns have been revealed at tonight's Summer Game Fest bonanza. Spider-Man and Scarlet Witch will be joining previously announced goodies such as Iron Man, Blade and Captain Marvel, while err... Scarlet Witch, Hulk and Venom will repping the game's big bad demon mother Lilith. Man, if there's one Avenger I wouldn't want going all evil on me, it's Hulk. And Scarlet Witch, to be fair. Why have these heroes joined the dark side in Firaxis' new tactics RPG? Well, we'll be able to find out when the game launches on October 7th. Here's a new trailer to celebrate. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, June 9, 2022 3:00 PM The biggest surprise of the Summer Game Fest so far wasn't any WORLD PREMIERE or EXCLUSIVE ANNOUNCEMENT, it was a game we've been posting about on RPS since 2012. Routine is back, baby, and at some point we will finally get to explore its sprawling moonbase. Have a peek at its terrible happenings in the new trailer below. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, June 9, 2022 2:54 PM At tonight's Geoff Fest (which I understand is officially called Summer Game Fest) we were treated to a first little sliver of gameplay from upcoming space survival-horror The Callisto Protocol, and boy-howdy you shouldn't watch this if you don't like gore, or if you're sitting accross from someone currently eating a rare steak for humorous narrative metaphor purposes. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, June 9, 2022 2:49 PM After last night's official teaser trailer showing, the 2022 edition of Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 got its first gameplay reveal this evening as part of Geoff Keighley's Summer Game Fest extravaganza. Taken from a very watery mission during the campaign, the trailer showed Task Force 141's Captain Price, Gaz, Soap et al skulking through an oil rig before raiding a fleeing boat during a storm. I guess there was a reason why Activision Blizzard unveiled the game on a boat deck after all... Get a load of all its fancy new water tech below. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, June 9, 2022 2:41 PM Summer Game Fest has just kicked off and so has a new combatant for Capcom's upcoming Street Fighter 6. Yep, the U.S. Air Force's finest, Guile, is back. Like some other famous Street Fighters from back in the day, he's only gone and grown some facial fluff too. Does it deflect blows or something? Judge for yourself after watching the trailer. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, June 9, 2022 2:28 PM The Summer Game Fest has brought the announcement of a new game based on Aliens, this time taking HR Giger's glistening penetrators and James Cameron's gung-ho space marines into real-time squad action. Due to launch next year, Aliens: Dark Descent will see marines battling xenomorphs as well as those Weyland-Yutani scamps. Sounds like it might be interesting, with persistent upgrades and deaths across a campaign. Check out the announcement trailer below. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, June 9, 2022 2:02 PM Seven years ago, I had high praise for Space Beast Terror Fright, a tense and often intense roguelikelike FPS about exploring alien-infested spaceships. It was murderously punishing, with limited ammo and endless aliens making it important to seal up routes and activate sentry turrets. It was great! Well, SBTF finally left early access and launched in full over the weekend, so I returned today and oh no. I have grown so very old since 2015, and this game is now too much for me. Oh no. |

A trailer demonstrated the unique abilities each characters will have, along with some mechanics that will appear.
