Kotaku Friday, August 5, 2022 1:05 PM We at Kotaku have long been in the habit of ranking all the games worst-to-best in a major series, whether it's Pokémon or Halo or Assassin's Creed. At a glance, it's possible to read those posts as reductive. Most every game has at least one redeeming quality. On the other hand, every "perfect" game probably has… |
Kotaku Friday, August 5, 2022 12:20 PM We need to set out our terms. Vampire Survivors is such a recent phenomenon that a genre name for it, and the many games appearing in its wake, has yet to be agreed upon. PCGamesN Friday, August 5, 2022 12:47 PM A new Skyrim mod inspired by the Stone Masks of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure turns the Dragon Priest masks into cursed JJBA cosplay. The overhaul to the RPG game system turns the masks from simple equippable pieces of armour into powerful, dangerous artifacts that bind to the wearer and imbue them with the spirits of the Dragon Priests themselves. The Curse of the Dragon Priests mod by creator grasscid takes inspiration from popular manga and anime series JoJo's Bizarre Adventure - specifically the stone masks which appear in its first two parts. Much like the masks of JJBA, these new Skyrim masks cannot simply be equipped from your inventory. Instead, upon activation, the mask will forcibly bind itself to your face, "having the Dragon Priest possess and reshape your flesh entirely for himself." The longer you keep the mask on, the stronger its power will grow - reaching up to 4x its base potency and, in some cases, gaining additional effects. For example, Volsung's mask, which grants you additional carry weight, cheaper store prices, and underwater breathing, also adds the ability to walk on water from the third stage of growth onwards. Hevnoraak's mask, which makes the wearer immune to all forms of disease and poison, also ramps up your armour effectiveness as it gets stronger. PCGamesN Friday, August 5, 2022 12:46 PM Looking for the best tower defense games on PC? For a time, the humble tower defense was one of the most popular genres out there. They may appear to be simple strategy games for more casual players, but fans would call them accessible tactical titles that require sharp reflexes, a sharper mind, and quick improvisation. The approachability of tower defense games stems from how deceptively straightforward they are - at least to begin with. A horde of enemies comes from specific directions across a small arena, and the player has to improvise a set of appropriate defenses - using scant resources - to deal with them. Enemies become tougher and more numerous as the game progresses, but the player gets access to better equipment to deal with them too. They're also highly addictive, which is why there remains a steady influx of tower defense titles - they even pop up in other genres too, such as the entertaining den defense minigame in Assassin's Creed Revelations. While the genre often veers towards smartphone and tablet gaming, there are still many fantastic tower defense games on PC right now. Here's the best of the best. |

PCGamesN Friday, August 5, 2022 11:21 AM A new report from loot box researcher Leon Y. Xiao states that Belgium's loot box laws banning the sale of the randomised microtransaction crates in games has not been properly enforced, with a majority of successful games among those available in the European country still implementing the systems. As reported by GamesIndustry.biz, the study, published by Xiao on July 28, found that 82 of the 100 highest-grossing Belgian iPhone games in May 2022 contained loot box features. This is despite a recommendation by the Belgian Gaming Commission in 2018 for criminal prosecution over the use of illegal loot boxes. Xiao's report says that the law has been circumvented easily by a number of different measures. As an example, the report states that in the case of Roblox, its publisher "did not explicitly require that user-generated loot boxes be blocked from purchase in Belgium." |

PCGamesN Friday, August 5, 2022 10:51 AM Looking for the best open world games on PC? From the early days of gaming, with Ultima and Lords of Midnight, open-world games have always been right at home on PC - indeed, those pesky consoles often couldn't handle it. Compare the ambitious early version of Halo to the final, more confined result, for example - and only the PC could hold sprawling regions in the very first Elder Scrolls games. Nevertheless, the leap into full 3D with Grand Theft Auto 3 and The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind really brought the idea of open-world gaming to the masses. These days, open-world games are their own genre. You can find accurate depictions of real-life cities or countries, huge fictional expanses with their own landmarks, complete worlds to check out - or even entire galaxies, depending on where you want to go on your next adventure in one of the best open world games on PC. Given the genre's broader scope, the coolest thing about them is that they can come in various forms: the important feature is that they allow you to explore freely. PCGamesN Friday, August 5, 2022 8:26 AM Diablo Immortal players are asking for one rather delightful addition to the RPG game - a Diablo 3 style pet system. While the free-to-play game has proven divisive, with some players unhappy with its microtransactions and forced warbands system, Diablo Immortal has continued to be successful, topping 30 million installs after its recent launch in China. Now, its fans are asking for a fun and useful addition to help with the Diablo Immortal leveling process. Diablo 3 features a range of class-based pets and minions, but the ones that Diablo Immortal players are interested in are the non-combat pets that follow your character around and automatically collect gold that drops nearby for you. Fellow action-RPG game Lost Ark also features a similar system where your pets grab dropped loot and also offer remote storage and mail access, as well as providing small buffs to the player character. Reddit user OK_Support9029 raised the idea on the official subreddit for the fantasy game. They say, "Nothing's more annoying than coming back for those 100-200 gold stacks that dropped after you moved onto the next group of mobs," suggesting that a gold-grabbing pet would be the perfect solution. "I'll always come back [to the game]," they continue, "but how much would the game experience improve if I had a little trash goblin by me?" PCGamesN Friday, August 5, 2022 7:46 AM Looking for a list of the best platform games on PC? Back in the '90s and early '00s, there were countless platformers for console gamers, while the PC had a reputation as a sort of wasteland for this one particular genre. Thankfully, this stigma has lessened since the days of Commander Keen, and we owe that in large part to the explosion of indie games that have flooded onto digital platforms over the past decade, meaning our fair platform is now bursting at the seams with solid platform games. The best platform games have garnered a reputation as requiring mechanical mastery and sublime timing to get into, but developers continue to push the genre forward by introducing gameplay elements from puzzle games and metroidvanias. Now you can even play through a beautiful story in a platform game, thanks to releases like Celeste and Ori and the Blind Forest. Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Friday, August 5, 2022 10:51 AM I don't think I like the game Descenders ostensibly is, but I enjoy playing. It's a downhill mountain biking game with dangerous speeds and even more dangerous stunts, including leaping through a ring of fire over of a moving train. This is fun. The roguelikelike campaign structure this is all built into, eh, I don't think it has added any enjoyment. But it is very fun to stack a double-backflip, slam into a rock, and watch your ragdoll corpse rocket downhill. It's a good reminder to ride whichever way you enjoy, expectations and pressures be damned. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Friday, August 5, 2022 7:30 AM My exposure to summer camps is entirely through films and games. Summer camp culture isn't as much of a thing in the UK, possibly because we're fairly happy to allow our children to learn to tie knots by themselves, by affixing each other to disused railway tracks or sick trees. In any case, the summer camps I've seen portrayed are usually unwholesome ones, because they're good horror fodder. Camp Canyonwood is a camp counsellor sim, out now in early access, where you (an bird) look after a flock of demanding smaller birds. It sounds like it would be twee, except the owner is cutting corners and you dream about a talking jackalope. I have not explored these aspects much because I am constantly trying to feed the children. |

Announced a year ago and "coming soon" in 2022 to the Epic Games Store, this extremely unsettling slice of nope - but also yes - just got a new trailer. Konami has launched a location test for Beatmania IIDX 30 Resident. The new entry will bring more quality-of-life improvements and new songs. Toby Fox is one of the composers contributing to the new tracks. Masaya "Camellia" Oya revealed on Twitter that he had collaborated with the Undertale creator to produce a new piece of game music titled "Summerblue." The song is available in the location test version. It will appear in the public arcade version after Konami updates the build to Resident. Konami will upgrade the arcade game's display resolution to Full HD (1080p) when it launches Resident. Resident—revealed in 2022—will mark the 30th iteration milestone for Beatmania IIDX, but the series celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2019. While Konami has recently been releasing new iterations on a yearly basis, it used to release them twice a year during the series' early years. PC Invasion - FeedDDD Friday, August 5, 2022 10:30 AM There's usually something compelling about games that take influence from Hotline Miami's frantic neon-tinged, room-clearing violence. In my experience, the style doesn't fit well with first-person games for various reasons, although Animalistic does a few things to iron out some concerns. Animalistic is now available in Early Access, and has 13 of a planned 20 levels included for preview impressions. I shot my way through the first three, but had to stop due to photosensitivity issues I'll get into in a bit. As should be clear from the Hotline Miami name drop in the previous paragraph, Animalistic sees you fighting your way through levels to get to the end without dying. Unlike Hotline Miami and most of the games that ape it, this one has the good sense to lose the one-shot-and-you're-dead ethos that can plague other first-p... |
PC Invasion - FeedDDD Friday, August 5, 2022 9:30 AM A little while back, Vampire Survivors received the 0.9 update, which made it seem like the 1.0 version laid right around the corner. As it turns out, though, developer poncle does not have the full version ready for Vampire Survivors players quite yet — update 0.10 has just been released. Those who expected the 1.0 version may feel disappointed by this news. But fret not, the new update, dubbed "The Not One," features quite a few new mechanics to mess around with. These come in the form of two additional characters, a new arcana, a new weapon, two new achievements, and a "secret menu option" for Vampire Survivors. At first, it may seem that the two new characters, Cosmo Pavone and Big Trousers, serve as the most substantial additions in the 0.10 update. But actually, the "secret menu option" is the star of the show this time. If you wish to bang your head against the wall and figure out this secret for yourself, then you can stop reading h... |
