Diablo Immortal Fractured Plane event is pleasing fans

The new Diablo Immortal Fractured Plane event is pleasing players of the Blizzard RPG game. Diablo Immortal has certainly seen its fair share of criticism in the months since its release, with community site Maxroll stopping coverage to protest the game's microtransaction model and Diablo Immortal warbands proving a consistent source of frustration among players. However, there's still plenty to love in the fantasy game, and the August 17 Diablo Immortal update has proven to be popular so far.

Introduced with the update is a new limited-time event called Fractured Plane, which steps away from the traditional Diablo Immortal leveling and progression systems. Instead, Fractured Plane is a roguelike mode that takes away all of your currently equipped skills, gear, and legendary gems. Instead, you must tackle a 15-floor gauntlet beginning with basic items and a randomly rolled skill set, finding armour and equipment as you progress.

As you defeat enemies and explore the Fractured Plane, you find 'unstable legendary gear' - this is only usable inside the event, but will always be of legendary rarity and will be chosen to complement the skills your character has available. Blizzard says that this event is designed to test knowledge of the classes, and "to invite players to try new skills and legendary items that they might not typically use, while offering a nuanced, but challenging, way to play Diablo Immortal."

Terraria 1.4.4 update in endgame, taking

Development for Terraria 1.4.4 update Labor of Love is now "in the end game" according to lead developer Andrew 'Redigit' Spinks - but the game's creator says that, while the team is done taking serious suggestions, "for fun suggestions are always welcome as usual." The next major update for one of the best crafting games is its biggest since the Journey's End update that was promised to be its final one, and it looks set to reduce your need for some of the best Terraria mods that have circumnavigated previous problems.

The Labor of Love patch promises to add a huge wealth of quality of life changes to the sandbox game - some of the standout highlights being the addition of Terraria gear loadouts and a small but significant change bringing about an end to corrupted Terraria jungle woes. It sees almost all your inventory stacks raising from a 999 cap to 9999, which translates to a huge Terraria inventory expansion.

Now, it seems like the update is getting very close to arriving. Spinks, who loves to interact with and often tease the game's playerbase, has continued to throw out little snippets alongside the rest of the Re-Logic development staff. In response to one player asking for a fix for a long-standing background visual glitch, Spinks remarks, "I can't remember, but I think we did fix that early on in this update."

You can pet the dog in World of Warcraft Dragonflight

World of Warcraft Dragonflight has introduced a key feature, one that fans have undoubtedly been asking for for years - you can pet the dog. The very good girl in question is a Bakar, one of the large furry quadrupedal creatures that roam the Ohn'ahran Plains, and a Twitter user recently participated in a group event to pet the dog and receive a buff as a reward.

R6 Grim preview: new Rainbow Six Siege operator is Nomad meets Jackal

Attackers like Grim, R6's newest operator, make me nervous. It's frightening enough that he's a three-speed with a superb primary weapon, but it's his gadget - a deployable canister that drops tracking microbots - that sets alarm bells ringing. When he arrives as part of the upcoming Operation Brutal Swarm, he'll bring yet another device that can live-ping a defender's location, and if you combine Grim with other tracker operators like Lion, Jackal, or Dokkaebi, you can bully defenders without them being able to fight back.

However, unlike those other three trackers, Grim does at least require some skill and strategy to use effectively; it's not just a case of pressing a button and getting free intel for your whole team. Before you can get any pings out to your teammates, you'll have to switch to an over-the-shoulder launcher, pick a spot where the microbots will either root out a defender or stop them from moving, and then hope it doesn't get blocked by defender gadgets like Mute jammers, Wamai discs, or Aruni gates. There's a muddle of decision points and vulnerability baked into this gadget that's reminiscent of the game's original roster of spec ops characters.

Frustratingly, while all of those caveats make Grim feel fair, they also mean he arrives in Rainbow Six Siege feeling pretty redundant. If his fellow trackers can all perform their role without having to get anywhere near a defender, then why would you pick Grim? Alternatively, you can stack him alongside other trackers, allowing you to isolate and suffocate individual roamers, but leaving your team short when it comes to breaching utility.

Multiversus patch breaks all current mods

A Multiversus patch that was released this week has created quite the shockwave with a certain part of the fighting game's community - it has essentially broken the modding community by ensuring that the game will not load if there are any mods installed. Only the vanilla game is accessible at the moment until someone figures out how to circumvent the new restrictions.

New default Minecraft skins bring back Steve's beard

Mojang has changed the default Minecraft skins, Steve and Alex - and Minecraft Steve's beard is finally back after years sporting a clean-shaven look. The iconic blue-shirted face of the crafting game, Minecraft Steve's original model featured a brown goatee - which many players mistook for a beaming smile - but it was removed in an attempt to offer a more gender-neutral look for the sandbox game's default character.

In 2014, another default skin was introduced to Minecraft - Minecraft Alex. Featuring a green top and longer red hair tied into a ponytail, Alex offers a slightly more feminine look than Steve's model. Microsoft studio head for Minecraft Helen Chiang said in a 2018 interview that the company wanted the Minecraft brand to subvert traditional gender stereotypes by presenting Alex and Steve as having identical physical qualities and capabilities.

Now, with the two options available to players, a decision has been made to bring back Steve's famous goatee. A post to the Minecraft subreddit highlighted the new skins - which also improve the shading on Alex to give the second character model a more natural three-dimensional look. The response so far is largely one of celebration, with fans particularly excited to see Steve's original bearded look returning.

RPG Time Legend of Wright

There's something magical about childhood creativity, especially when it comes to video games. At the risk of sounding like an old person, children didn't have nearly as much access to games when I was growing up as they do now. And unless you had someone to teach you, you could forget about learning how to make them. Nowadays, kids have comprehensive YouTube tutorials on basic programming, crash courses, tutors, mentors -- you name it. It's a fantastic development and gives children the tools they need to achieve their creative vision.

But what if you don't have those things?

RPG Time: The Legend of Wright asks this very question, and solves it in a way many kids have for generations: By using your imagination. In RPG Time, you are the classmate of Kenta, a primary school student and aspiring game developer. After class, Kenta invites you to play his new home-brewed RPG: "The Legend of Wright." His notebook is filled with detailed sketches of fantasy monsters, landscapes, and occasional doodles that all seemingly come to life through the power of imagination. You control Wright, the titular hero, whose quest takes him on an epic journey to rescue Lay, the Princess of Light.

[gallery ids="934028,934031,934056" link="file"]

It's worth pointing out that RPG Time is not an RPG in the traditional sense. Gameplay-wise, it plays much more like a point-and-click adventure game, in the vein of the Monkey Island or King's Quest series. But that's no reason to write it off. What makes RPG Time unique is its presentation -- the game takes place almost entirely inside the pages of Kenta's notebook, through animated drawings. In true childlike fashion, each of these pages is filled to the brim with oodles of doodles, many of which can be inspected to reveal additional unique dialogue. There are hidden items, side quests, and mini-games. What's more, most of this content is also entirely optional.

Though optional, this content is the true core of RPG Time's appeal. The writing absolutely oozes a cute, childlike sense of humor and excitement. You can really tell that every line, every character, and every location was crafted with a love and appreciation for RPGs. Wright can climb down wells a la Dragon Quest, and enter a room with a top-down view reminiscent of some of my favorite Legend of Zelda titles. Every character is narrated through Kenta, who puts on a hat resembling the character he's role-playing. Sometimes things may go awry -- a storm might cut the power and turn the classroom pitch black -- but does Kenta care? No. Like many kids are wont to do, Kenta improvises, incorporating the element into the story and adding another layer of immersion to the scene. If you don't like reading text, though, the game may come off as a bit "on-rails."

[gallery link="file" ids="934032,934030,934029"]

Still, I want to stress that RPG Time is filled with some of the most ingenious uses of props I've ever seen in a video game. In addition to the notebook, the game utilizes stationery often found in Japanese schools. Wright's sword, for example, is a pencil that can be sharpened at a grindstone, which is actually an old-school manual pencil sharpener. The options menu is a tower made of Lego-like bricks. Wright's health bar is represented with a tape measure that can extend and contract. Props are rendered to look like they're made of cardboard, attacking enemies will leave pencil marks on the page, and consumables are represented with real-life snacks. There are probably a dozen more details that I've missed, and each one never failed to make me think "How in the world did they come up with this?"

What's more, many of these details could have been lost in translation. As someone who went to a Japanese primary school, this was one aspect that worried me about RPG Time's localization. However, I can confidently say that the localization team managed to translate many of these aspects to a near-perfect degree. It isn't just a direct translation; the same degree of care and attention to detail is also poured into the game's English fonts, symbols, and puns. Thanks to this, even culturally unique concepts feel natural and understandable.

[gallery columns="2" ids="934057,934058" link="file"]

There are a few notable flaws, of course. For one, the control scheme is a bit awkward at times. Players must control Wright using the directional pad, but use the joystick to control the cursor. And while most items can be interacted with using the action button ("A" on Switch), in the inspection mode, you interact with objects using the right shoulder button. This led to a lot of situations where I would go into the inspection mode, only to accidentally back out because I'd pressed the "A" button which, for some odd reason, is the button that returns you to adventuring. Furthermore, Wright is constantly walking in a slow saunter. The inclusion of a run button would have been appreciated, especially when you consider the sheer amount of things that you can interact with.

Despite this, RPG Time: The Legend of Wright is a solid and charming adventure game. It is sure to captivate point-and-click adventure game and JRPG fans alike. Its stress-free, easy-to-pick-up nature makes it the perfect game to play with kids or by yourself. Most of all, it reminds players of what it truly means to think outside of the box. If you've ever daydreamed about entire worlds, scenarios, and characters during class, why not help Kenta do the same?

RPG Time: The Legend of Wright is available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Windows. The Steam version will release on September 13, 2022.

nintendo switch box

According to a Nikkei report, Nintendo will reduce the packaging size of the Nintendo Switch. This will help to improve shipping efficiency. In turn, it will boost the speed at which the Switch is available in stores or for online shoppers. [Thanks, Nibellion!]

Nikkei has reported that Nintendo will reduce the packaging for the Switch by 20%. This plan is to help customers around the world get a Nintendo Switch faster. But it will improve Nintendo's own sales as well. Vooks crunched the numbers and noted that the original Nintendo Switch box is 14% bigger than the new Nintendo Switch OLED box. Behind the scenes, Nintendo had already started to cut back on its packaging.

While yearly sales of the Nintendo Switch have dropped, Nintendo has sold a total of 111 million units since its initial 2017 release. More than 100 million users have been playing it annually. That means the vast majority of players who purchased a Switch still actively enjoy it, rather than letting it collect dust.

It has sold more than the Nintendo Wii (101.63 million units), but is still sitting behind the Nintendo Game Boy (118.69 million). Though Nintendo is trying to sell more consoles through altering the size of the box, the semiconductor shortage and different major releases are also affecting its sales numbers.

It is unclear when exactly Nintendo will implement the changes to its box sizes. But it is likely that Nintendo Switch boxes appearing in the near future will look significantly smaller.

genshin impact teyvat times golden apple archipelago

The Golden Apple Archipelago has been back in Genshin Impact for another summer of island fun, and HoYoVerse has compiled some player statistics in its latest issue of Teyvat Times. It used data from all of the servers in this report. HoYoVerse has also released emojis of the characters as they appear in chibi format on the Teyvat Times.

https://twitter.com/GenshinImpact/status/1560839039057534977

Some of the numbers focus on how many players interacted with the various mirage islands. Almost 50% (43.8% to be more precise) found Xinyan's Phantasmal Conch on The Islands' Stirring Strings. However a "whopping 72%" of players missed at least one of the hidden Phantasmal Conches on Twinning Isle and Broken Isle. A player on the Asia server even brought "Bystander" onto the Twilight Theater stage 32 times.

As for combat information, the Teyvat Times reported that the Genshin Impact Golden Apple Archipelago had not even been open for a week before players defeated almost 530,000,000 hilichurls. However, in that same time period, around 1,665,000 players died falling into the water.

The final set of Golden Apple Archipelago statistics for Genshin Impact focuses on the Reminiscent Regimen event. This event pit players and friends against each other in mini-games around the islands. Twelve players managed to complete everything with a perfect score on the first try. Unfortunately, teamwork does not always make the dream work. An average of 760,0444 players got their Waveriders stolen every day during the "Raid" phase.

Genshin Impact is available on PS4, PS5, Windows PC, and mobile devices. You will no longer have access to the Golden Apple Archipelago when Version 3.0 launches, as this map is event exclusive. Version 3.0 will go live on August 24, 2022.
