Lou's Lagoon is a TaleSpin inspired open-world island adventure game

Lou's Lagoon is a self-professed cosy open-world adventure game coming from indie studio Rokaplay. It's a cutesy third-person affair that sees you take over your uncle's business after he goes missing. Looking similar to titles like My Time at Portia and with what looks to be a Stardew Valley-style gameplay loop, it looks to pair the life game genre with open-world adventure. Oh, did I mention there was a plane? Because it's also a plane game.

     Terraria 2

It's an exciting time for Terraria fans, with a Terraria 1.4.4 update release window now announced for late September as development on the Labor of Love update reaches endgame. However, that's not enough anticipation for the game's lead developer, Andrew 'Redigit' Spinks, who has stirred up speculation among fans of one of the best crafting games by sharing some early concept art for the Terraria 2 world map.

The Terraria state of the game post for August is fairly light, but shares a few key details about the progress of the Terraria 1.4.4 update. Firstly, work on the PC version is complete and has reached 'code freeze' - meaning that nothing new is being added, and that remaining work is just on bug fixes, tweaks, and ports. Speaking of ports, Re-Logic says it plans to make 1.4.4 the first simultaneous Terraria update release across all platforms - PC, console, and mobile. The team adds that, barring any issues or delays in platform submissions, it expects the Terraria 1.4.4 update Labor of Love release date to fall in late September.

Before we move onto Terraria 2 "news," there are a couple of other quick announcements for 1.4.4. The first is a very welcome accessibility change, with Spinks revealing that an autofire toggle has been added for non-autouse weapons and equipment. Asked about the feature, Spinks says, "I know I can be stubborn at times, but once people framed it as an accessibility issue I knew we had to make the option." One other fun item spoiler was dropped into the state of the game post - the addition of a recreation of the painting created by Terraria fans during Reddit's r/place community art project.

Ikonei Island is an adorable Zelda meets Stardew Valley farming sim

Initial impressions of Ikonei Island: An Earthlock Adventure are certainly those of Zelda meets Stardew Valley, but the indie game looks to carve out its own niche in the relaxing island life game genre alongside the likes of Animal Crossing: New Horizons with dynamic combat systems, freeform island development, and a mysterious story at its centre. Waking up on the bizarre Ikonei Island, you'll uncover its various mysteries and befriend the wildlife, harnessing their unique abilities to help you explore further.

Ikonei Island launched on Steam Early Access on August 18, and PCGamesN took a look at the game and its planned updates during our time at Gamescom. Perhaps most exciting for fans of the genre will be the planned multiplayer game mode - currently, the early access version of Ikonei Island only supports a single-player adventure, but up to four players will be able to work together on an island once multiplayer launches.

Like all the best farming games, Ikonei Island lets you build up your farm from scratch, earning a variety of tools and equipment to help increase your crop efficiency as you progress. As you harvest more resources, you'll be able to build workshops, housing, decorations, and more to grow your simple base of operations into a thriving hamlet. In addition, you'll be able to craft a range of weapons to tackle dangerous monsters out in the wild in Zelda-like combat sequences.

Diablo Immortal legendary crests are being redesigned

Diablo Immortal legendary crests will get a visual redesign to help differentiate them from the paid eternal legendary crests in an attempt to address concerns about 'hidden' monetisation mechanics in the fantasy game. Players have previously complained that Diablo Immortal's eternal legendary crests - which can only be bought with real money and allow earned gems to be traded on the in-game market - bear almost identical resemblance to the lesser 'regular' legendary crests.

Furthermore, eternal legendary crests can only be bought as a standalone item in the in-game store - meaning that, because of their nearly identical designs, some players felt they had been tricked into buying real-money item bundles believing they were getting the eternal crests, when in fact the bundles contained standard legendary crests that only drop bound gems instead of tradeable ones.

Diablo Immortal lead designer Wyatt Cheng responded to a post on the game's subreddit showing a new crest design. Cheng says that a change is in the works that will see the standard legendary crest revamped to a new, orange look instead of its purple one. The eternal legendary crest, Cheng explains, will retain its current purple design, while the non-eternal legendary crest will now have a distinct shape with an orange face.

Valorant Fracture map changes are coming soon

Valorant Fracture map changes are on the way soon. While Valorant certainly rates among the best FPS games right now, some of its maps are more popular than others - and Fracture is one that has seen a lot of complaints from the community. Riot level designer Joe "Pearl Hogbash" Lansford says the team has several changes in the pipeline to help improve general quality of life on the map and make it "a little more usable for both teams."

Among the most common complaints are the number of different angles that players can come from. With a lot of elevation differences and huge potential for rotation around the map, players can quickly flank around and surround their opponents, making it difficult to ever know where your foes are coming from. There's also a running joke that Fracture's A site feels like a B site - something players say they can't explain, but just feels true somehow.

"Fracture's been out for a year now - we're working on a couple of changes right now," Lansford explains in a TikTok video on the official playvalorant account. "I'm not going to spoil too much but we have some general quality of life changes across the map and hopefully make A site a little more defensible." In addition, Lansford suggests that changes around Dish (the large satellite dish) should hopefully make the area play better from both attacker and defender perspectives.

Dredge is an idyllic fishing sim with a horror game below the surface

Team17 and New Zealand developers Black Salt Games have released a trailer showing off their new single-player fishing adventure game, Dredge. The peaceful sea-sim is all about a down-on-their-luck fisherman taking back control of their life, and heading out into open waters to find their fortune in the only way they know how - fishing. Things aren't quite as they seem, however, as the trailer quickly teases some horror game elements, showing the game's sinister side with the dangers that lurk below the surface.

RPG Time Interview

RPG Time: The Legend of Wright may be a video game played on screens, but the world it invokes feels as physical and present as an arts and crafts hobby. The game's unique aesthetic immediately draws eyes and and evokes childhood memories, as Andrew noted in his review. We had the opportunity to grill RPG Time's Designer Tom Fujii about the game, his inspiration for Kenta's story, and the prospects of seeing a real-life RPG Time tabletop game.

Siliconera (Josh Tolentino and Andrew Kiya): RPG Time's story is about a boy named Kenta, an aspiring game designer. Is there a real-life backstory to that concept?

Tom Fujii: When I was in elementary school, I had a friend who was good at crafting and let me play with his handmade games. Although the setting was not at school but in his room, the moments when I played the games he made for me became a wonderful memory of my childhood.

Clearly, a lot of love went into making this game, and it shows in all the little details. Is there anything you'd like players to look out for?

Tom Fujii: I crammed a lot of love and ideas into the game, so I'd like players to enjoy it until the end. I've also drawn ideas here and there that don't relate to the progress of the game, such as in the corners of the notebook, so make sure to check them out as well!

Legend of Wright

RPG Time's visuals take a lot of inspiration from physical objects, like hand-drawn maps and miniatures used in tabletop RPGs. What inspired the team to adopt this craft-based aesthetic?

Tom Fujii: Handmade games and similar things I enjoyed when I was in elementary school have inspired me a lot. I've researched on the internet how people played during their childhood in other countries outside of Japan, where the staff has spent their time before. Even if countries and regions differ, it turned out that memories of handmade games they enjoyed playing as a kid using stationery are common throughout the world, which was a surprise to me.

We are hoping to express craft-based aesthetics in a digital game by setting up school desks and chairs to prepare the crafts in real life as they appear in the game, or limiting the amount of copying and pasting to generate data. As a result, though it might be a subtle difference, I think this craft-based aesthetic can be sensed throughout the game.

The game seems to emphasize a lot of drawing and erasing in Kenta's adventure. Will players have a chance to freely draw their own designs or items?

To complete the game, players need to influence The Legend of Wright by drawing. Separately, although it doesn't do anything to progress the game, a feature allowing players to doodle on the notebook can be unlocked by reading all of the tutorial, so I'd like players to try clearing the Tutorial Dungeon as well.

If you were to make a physical version of RPG Time as a real-world tabletop game, what would you most like to include from the video game version?

That sounds like a lot of fun. I'd love to include an appearance of the game master, Kenta, on the tabletop game as well. Though it'd be ideal if Kenta could appear in real life and play the tabletop game with players, I'm sure Kenta would prepare hints to entertain the players through the tutorial, cards, and pieces.

RPG Time

Thanks to Tom and DeskWorks for taking the time out to talk to us! This interview has been edited for clarity. Note: As the interview was conducted prior to RPG Time's full release, it speaks about the game in the future tense. RPG Time: The Legend of Wright is available on Nintendo SwitchPlayStation 4Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Windows. The Steam version will release on September 13, 2022.

Teppen Jurassic Rampage

It seems Capcom thinks there's a future for Dino Crisis in the cards...literally.Digital card-battler Teppen is getting its own Dino Crisis-themed card pack, called Jurassic Rampage. In it, Dino Crisis characters Regina and Gail join the playable roster. Teppen Jurassic Rampage will also have its own story missions, that build on the game's previous trilogy event.

Check out the cinematic trailer for the expansion below.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6hVsWwKZSZw

Teppen Jurassic Rampage tells the tale of what happens when Dino Crisis' resident mad scientist Edward Kirk gets his hands on the powerful "Third Energy". Spoiler: The result is dinosaurs. Pulled in from beyond time and space, invasive dinosaur species have invaded and disrupted the island's ecology. Government agents from all over have converged on the island to duke it out for possession of the new power. Some of the cards feature Regina and Gail interacting with other Capcom characters, such as "Agents Alliance", a card showing off Regina fighting alongside Resident Evil's Leon

Gungho and Capcom also revealed the card properties for the Teppen Jurassic Rampage playable characters, Regina and Gail.

In Dino Crisis, Regina is a special intelligence operative attached to the Secret Operation Raid Team (SORT). She infiltrated Ibis Island to find and return Edward Kirk to custody, only to find the island overrun with prehistoric reptiles. In Teppen, Regina is a Human Tribe character with the ability to spread additional damage points around when she attacks the enemy Hero.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=udMsR2LvGhM

Team leader of SORT, Gail was separated from Regina during the raid on Ibis Island. Unbeknownst to his teammates, Gail had a second objective in addition to apprehending Dr. Kirk: To obtain as much data as possible about Third Energy to aid in its weaponization by the government. As a Teppen Jurassic Rampage card, Gail can damage a facing unit as soon as he enters the field. When set to invade, he can deal damage to all enemies.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-PuoVMigQ8

Teppen is available on iOS and Android. The Jurassic Rampage card pack launches on September 1, 2022.

The next installment of Jackbox Games' seminal quiz game series, the Jackbox Party Pack 9, is due for release in Fall of 2022. Like previous Party Pack entries, it'll bring with it five new and returning games to try with friends and family at the next gathering or online. In addition, though, Jackbox Games is trumpeting the implementation of two new, much-requested "quality-of-life" features to make sessions easier to manage.

The first new feature is an expansion of the moderation functions introduced with Jackbox Party Pack 7. Specifically, players will now be able tom kick other players from an active session. In a blog detailing the function, Jackbox Games said that the ability to kick players from the game was "one of [their] most requested features ever". The inability to kick a player has proved a liability, particularly for players that livestream publicly. If a session code was guessed or accidentally shown, random players could join someone's session, potentially locking out preferred or invited participants. Jackbox Party Pack 9 will allow a player to take on a moderator role and select players that need kicking from the game or the lobby. Kicked players will be unable to rejoin the game.

In addition to the kicking function and other returning management features, the game will support QR Code-based sign-in, making it easier for participants to smoothly join a session from their mobile device.

As for the games themselves, Jackbox Party Pack 9 will have 5 games to play: Fibbage 4, Junktopia, Nonsensory, Roomerang, and Quixort.

Here's a description of each game.

Fibbage 4

Fibbage 4 returns, and remains an irreverent bluffing game. Players will get a true fact with a key word or phrase blanked out. They must fool the other players by entering lies that fit the blank.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A8Q5lIkXd7Y

Junktopia

Junktopia is a new game where players are turned into frogs by a deranged wizard. They must earn back their humanity by finding old objects and giving them an amusing backstory to increase their value.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6HaToA3lew8

Nonsensory

Nonsensory joins the Jackbox Party Pack 9 as a combination of writing, drawing, and guessing. Players will use creative prompts to test their levels of NSP (Nonsensory Perception), trying to guess the "secret nonsense" in the minds of their friends.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SOUduMHFhQk

Roomerang

Roomerang involves prompts, role-play, and competition in a faux reality TV show. Players are given prompts to answer while inhabiting their in-game personas, in order to avoid elimination and gain status. Here's a video of the developers playing a work-in-progress version of Roomerang.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WcY46aNOVYA&

Quixort

Finally, Quixort challenges players to sort a series of objects based on a prompt. The objects fall on blocks guided by robots, adding time pressure and a need for cooperation to decide where each trivia block should fall. No trailer was available for the game, but this screenshot shows a version of the interface.

Quixort

The Jackbox Party Pack 9 will arrive on PC in Fall 2022. Other platforms have not yet been announced. Check out Siliconera's review of the previous installment, which is available on PC, Mac, Linux, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and TV-based mobile platforms.
