PCGamesN Friday, February 3, 2023 9:57 AM When does Hogwarts Legacy take place? The latest Harry Potter universe game is set in the distant past, long before the scarred boy set foot in Hogwarts' hallowed halls and even before the Fantastic Beasts films. To put this into context, Dumbledore is a mere child in the events of this game, so it's as if we're stepping into a brand-new world. With its rather early timeframe, it's also improbable that the open-world game will have either Harry Potter or Hagrid as Hogwarts Legacy characters you can interact with. However, since the ghosts have been on campus since forever, it's highly probable you'll at least bump into Nearly Headless Nick from time to time. Either way, Portkey Games has confirmed in what century Hogwarts Legacy takes place, so let's dive deeper into the story setting. Continue reading When does Hogwarts Legacy take place? PCGamesN Friday, February 3, 2023 9:01 AM Perhaps the most shocking thing about The Great War Western Front, Petroglyph's upcoming historical RTS game, is how fast a platoon of men can simply vanish. Dozens of soldiers can be charging across a French battlefield one moment, and in the seconds it takes for a burst of machine gun fire to ring out or an artillery barrage to land, they're gone. In a Great War Western Front hands-on preview I joined recently, I had the chance to try out the upcoming PC game's tutorial, experiment a little with its complex campaign layer, and attempt one of the historical battles that recreate some of the clashes that defined the First World War. It's a remarkable step for Petroglyph, a studio whose RTS chops date back to 1992's Dune 2, and this early look grabbed my attention and held it. PCGamesN Friday, February 3, 2023 6:40 AM Looking for a great Warzone 2 SP-R 208 loadout? Marksman rifles are one of the strongest weapons in MW2 and they're just as powerful in Warzone 2, though you do need to use the right attachments. One-shot kills are impossible if your opponent has three armour plates, but the sheer speed of the SP-R 208 ensures that follow-up shots will be easier than with the more cumbersome sniper rifles. The SP-R 208 is strong thanks to its lightning-fast aim-down sight speed and ability to kill enemies in the free PC game with a single upper body shot at close and medium range. The damage drop-off, armour, and long sightlines of Warzone 2 mean you're not going to get one-shot kills, even to the head, but as we saw with the Kar-98k in the first Warzone, that doesn't mean it's not any good. Provided your aim is sharp, this is easily one of the best Warzone 2 marksman rifle in the game right now. PCGamesN Friday, February 3, 2023 6:29 AM With the best SP-R 208 loadout for MW2 we're not quite back to the glory days of quickscoping, but it's getting pretty close. While there are plenty of ways to trim the best sniper rifles in Modern Warfare 2 back to their barest forms, we're keeping the long-range scope on our build so it can be used effectively at all ranges. Our SP-R 208 loadout adds a scope to make it feel like a true quickscoper's gun, while also trimming down the weight to make it as mobile as possible. Expect some severe damage dropoff at long-range, but most fights you take in this FPS game will be relatively up close. Provided you can land your shots, it's easily one of the best guns in Modern Warfare 2 and it fares surprisingly well in the free PC game, Warzone 2. I gave the patch a whirl to try out its PC-specific changes – namely a new 'Performance' setting for RT global illumination and a fix for the broken screen space reflections setting – only to find that non-ray-traced, DirectX 12 performance has been utterly knackered. Siliconera Friday, February 3, 2023 9:30 AM Tsuburaya Productions promoted the full trailer for the third and last season of Netflix's Ultraman animated series. Formally titled Ultraman Final, the season will conclude the story of Shinjiro Hayata and the Ultraman Suits. The series streams on Netflix, with the last season set to debut in Spring 2023. Check it out below. Note: The Ultraman Final trailer and the description below contains spoilers for Ultraman Season 1 and 2.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S2_cxz-VmFc The Ultraman Final anime shows Shinjiro in a moment of crisis. His powers are growing out of control and devastating the city. In one incident Shinjiro sees himself grown to the size of a Giant of Light (the original Ultraman), despite not wearing the Ultraman suit, and facing off against Zetton. Public opinion has turned against Shinjiro as Ultraman, and even other suit-wearers are hunting him down. Meanwhile alien forces are taking action, among them villains called Mephisto and Valcure. The new aliens introduced for Ultraman Final are called Mephisto and Valcure. They appear to be original creations, although Mephisto's design appears similar to that of Alien Mefilas from the classic shows. Valcure is voiced by MAO, who also voiced Iris in Fire Force, Shion in That Time I Reincarnated As A Slime, and Pecorine in Princess Connect! Re: Dive. Mephisto is voiced by Koji Ishii, who also played Fisher Tiger in One Piece, and Ba'gamnan in Final Fantasy XII. The show itself is co-directed by the pair of Kenji Kamiyama and Shinji Aramaki, who also worked on Ghost in the Shell: SAC 2045 and Blade Runner: Black Lotus. Ultraman Final will debut on Netflix in Spring 2023. The first two seasons are readily available. Threezero recently announced a figure based on the Ultraman Tiga suit Power Type. Siliconera Friday, February 3, 2023 8:30 AM A new FFXIV anime commercial from Korea promotes the game's multifaceted job system. Posted to the official Final Fantasy XIV Korean-language YouTube channel, the new promotion is done up in 2D animation. It's a contrast to the usual style for FFXIV promos, which typically use in-game graphics, CG cinematics, or real-life actors. Check out the FFXIV anime commercial below. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nxzkwf7unxw Consisting of a brief clip, the FFXIV anime commercial traces the origins of a powerful sword. First found as a rare bit of ore by a Lalafell Miner, the item is brought into being by a Hrothgar Blackmith. It then ends up in the hands of a high-level Paladin, leading a party of characters in what looks to be the Final Coil of Bahamut raid encounter. The commercial touches briefly on the many roles a player can take while playing Final Fantasy XIV. Gathering jobs in the Disciple of the Land track, like Miners, Botanists, and Fishers gather up raw materials from gathering spots all over the game world. Then players with Crafting Jobs in the Disciple of the Hand track, like Blacksmiths, Armorers, and Leatherworkers turn the materials into everything from weapons and armoreto potions, food, and accessories. Then the Disciples of War and Magic, the game's combat classes, take their crafted gear into battle, using them directly or for cosmetic glamour. Final Fantasy XIV is available on the PC, PS4, and PS5. The post FFXIV Anime Commercial Focuses on Crafting and Raiding appeared first on Siliconera. |
Siliconera Friday, February 3, 2023 8:00 AM Over the years, a number of Vanillaware games came back again. Odin Sphere. Princess Crown. Muramasa: The Demon Blade. Dragon's Crown. Now people are poised to yet again return to the world and characters of GrimGrimgoire with the OnceMore remaster. To help learn more about the game, as well as its influence on 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim and possible upcoming projects, Siliconera spoke with Vanillaware President and Producer George Kamitani, Director Yoshio Nishimura, and Programmer Teruhisa Kanayama. Kamitami served as director on the original game and producer on OnceMore. Meanwhile, Nishimura served as a UI/background designer on the PS2 game. Jenni Lada: Did you face any challenges in remastering the GrimGrimoire character designs? Yoshio Nishimura: Since we'd originally drawn each illustration in high resolution already, we honestly did not run into much difficulty renewing the design. However, since the game is 15 years old, some data had already been lost, and it took some additional work to correct certain anomalies in the animations and to change the screen ratio from 4:3 to 16:9, but with a bit of time, we were able to get it done. What GrimGrimoire OnceMore addition do you feel is the most extensive, and how difficult was it to implement into the game? Teruhisa Kanayama: The skill tree. The power-up elements in the PlayStation 2 version used to be tied to story progression, but this time they can be obtained from the players' abilities of choice. Maintaining the unit characteristics from the PlayStation 2 version while adding abilities that would broaden the scope of the game's strategy aspects was a challenge. Other major additions include an illustration gallery and a fast-forward function. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wOFwoilgAeE&ab_channel=NISAmerica Nishimura: We were working on a major project within the company at the time, and it was difficult to secure a production budget and production staff, so we had to make sure not to do anything that could cause problems. We also gave priority to in-house staff who were interested in the game to work on the title. How did you decide which quality of life changes to include? How influential was feedback from players? Nishimura: Things can change quite a bit in 15 years, don't you think? It was for that reason that we decided on the content of the changes based on feedback from the production staff this time around rather than from the users at the time. Basically, we tried to add features that would have been implemented in a typical game today, so that people who played the game 15 years ago could enjoy it with a fresh new feeling and without complaints. The "HARD" difficulty level is more difficult in GrimGrimoire OnceMore. What did you adjust to ensure it is satisfying, but balanced? Kanayama: Since there are more power-up elements for the players this time around, such as new familiar abilities and grand magic, some adjustments have been made, like reducing the maximum amount of mana that can be taken from crystals on "HARD" and enemies using more abilities in the final stages of the game. In the PlayStation 2 version, the "HARD" difficulty was unlocked after the game was completed, but this time it's playable from the beginning so as to satisfy users who are already familiar with real-time strategy games.
Nishimura: Some of the voice actors for the Japanese version had already retired from their jobs as voice actors, and there were some issues with the contract for the PlayStation 2 version, so it was necessary to re-record them. Voices for characters are in high demand due to the influence of the Japanese animation industry, so we wanted to incorporate the current trends in voice quality after 15 years.
George Kamitani: The original version of GrimGrimoire was remade into 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim. Based on the response to GrimGrimoire, we flipped the "story-to-RTS" ratio and created a totally new experience through the framework of the story. And since GrimGrimoire was a loop scenario, the starting point of 13 Sentinels needed a loop that did not actually loop. Nishimura: As for influence from 13 Sentinels, we were able to use a substantial amount of materials from the 13 Sentinels setting in this game. GrimGrimoire actually has a fairly detailed setting, but that hasn't really been shown off. That's why we decided to add illustrations and text to OnceMore in order to expand on the setting. Kanayama: The fact that there were similar features in 13 Sentinels, such as saving and fast-forwarding during battle, made it easy to come up with the idea of trying those things in GrimGrimoire OnceMore. Could we see a return to other Vanillaware games and further re-releases? Could Kumatanchi or Grand Knights History make a comeback? Kamitani: Kumatanchi! That's a great idea! (laughs) As for Grand Knights History, we may or may not be working on a similar yet totally different project. I'd like to port something like Muramasa, but there are certain complications there. At the end of the day, I think I really would love to release a new original title. GrimGrimoire OnceMore will come to the PS4, PS5, and Switch in North America on April 4, 2023 and in Europe on April 7, 2023. It is already available in Japan. It first showed up on the PS2 in Japan in 2007. The post Interview: Vanillaware Talks GrimGrimoire, 13 Sentinels, Future Games appeared first on Siliconera. |

Siliconera Friday, February 3, 2023 6:00 AM Pocket Card Jockey is back again, thank goodness. Even though the impending 3DS eShop shutdown means one version could be lost, Game Freak's solitaire and horse racing mashup lives on via Apple Arcade. The fact that there are simulation elements in there might throw people off, though. Especially if you aren't sure how to start raising your own horses. Fortunately, unlocking the farm and getting to breed horses in Pocket Card Jockey: Ride On is easy and not dissimilar to the original 3DS release. How to Unlock the Farm and Breed Horses in Pocket Card Jockey: Ride OnOkay. So just getting the farm isn't too difficult. Once your horse becomes a full grown adult at five years old, it will retire. You'll then be able to access it and pair it up at the farm. So playing through solitaire matches and racing in Pocket Card Jockey will probably unlock that in between one and two hours. However, actually getting to breed horses in Pocket Card Jockey: Ride On takes a bit longer. That's because you need one male and one female horse. As you go through the game, you'll unlock more loaner horses by hitting milestones like racing a certain number of times or racking up wins. Every horse that you ride becomes accessible in the farm after they retire. So if you want to start breeding them ASAP, you need to make sure your second loaner horse is the opposite gender from the one you started out with. After that, go to the farm, place both of them in the field at the same time, go through some races with another horse, and you should come back to a new foal you can race that takes traits and skills from its parents.
