Normally, a new line of plushies from the already merchandised-to-death Pokémon industrial complex wouldn't be that noteworthy. However, the Pokémon Center in Japan is selling a new line of plush toys called "My Pikachu" that do have one pretty remarkable characteristic. Unlike the vast majority of plush toys, these…

The Case Of The Golden Idol was one of my favourite games of 2022, but one twist I didn't see coming from the heir to Obra Dinn's detective crown was more of it, or more of it so soon, for that matter. Happily, developers Color Gray Games have announced a new DLC pack is coming for The Golden Idol next week called The Spider Of Lanka. Set in 1741, a year before the first scenario of The Golden Idol proper, this trio of new cases looks set to shed extra light on the titular idol whose mysterious powers set the original game in motion. I'm afraid I can't tell you much more than that, as most of the announcement details have been slapped with big black REDACTED marks. Have a watch of the reveal trailer below instead.

For me, developers Deconstructeam are the GOAT at fleshing out characters through the subtle art of conversation. Whether it's revealing the dark secrets of corporate espionage from the mouths of loose-lipped employees after a cocktail or two in The Red Strings Club, uncovering the cut-throat life of a hitman as he arranges beautiful bouquets in Eternal Home Floristry, or unravelling the personal philosophies of an old man who claims he can speak to God through a radio in Interview With A Whisperer, their games are detailed portraits of complex people. When Firaxis first unveiled their new tactical superhero RPG Marvel's Midnight Suns in August of 2021, its card-based battle system proved to be a point of contention among its audience, so much so that when the game was delayed a short while later, rumours started flying that the studio was going back to the drawing board on the game's combat and dropping the cards entirely.

"Hah, that was wishful thinking for some people!" laughs director Jake Solomon when I ask him at GDC how he felt about those rumours at the time. It's well-known now that the delay was simply about polishing the game rather than anything more drastic, but to Solomon's credit he does also concede that he was perhaps "a little naïve" at the time for thinking it would go down without question.

I don't feel very strongly about Age Of Wonders 4. But I'll be fair; it's definitely good.

I've enjoyed most of my time with it, and the parts I didn't were probably down to caning it too hard in too short a time. Such is that reviewz lyf. Played less intensely over a longer period, I imagine more of its intricacies becoming clear, and more custom playstyles emerging to encourage more replays and challenges. As it stands though, its generally high quality and interesting systems just haven't captured my imagination.

It is not unimaginative, though. Some of its playable races are the usual elves and goblins, but most have a twist, like the cannibalistic dwarves, gold-obsessed necromancers, or the "cursed toadlings" I picked almost reflexively: a people transformed along with their warrior Queen Charming. Each comes with a starting hero and traits for their cities units, plus a set of spellbooks that determine what research you'll have access to upfront.

"Why am I so slow", complains my partner, minutes into being cajoled into playing Dota 2 for the very first time. "Ah, you'll need to buy boots," I say, with the hard earned wisdom of someone who's spent over 4,000 hours clicking on wizards. "I have boots," she says, somewhat indignantly. "Those are slippers," I reply. "What?" she asks, somewhat more indignantly. "They don't give you move speed," I respond. I see a flicker of anger in her eyes, as well as maybe, just maybe, a spark of interest.

A new Dota patch came out last week, and it's a biggun. Is it a good time for lapsed players to jump back in? Yes! Is it a good time for entirely new players to dip their toes in, while experienced players are still befuddled by a map that's 40% bigger, featuring dual Roshan pits, new minibosses and a host of other changes? Perhaps! It's certainly a good opportunity to test your relationship.

When I meet Jake Solomon at GDC, it's his third day of unemployment. The XCOM and Marvel's Midnight Suns director and designer announced he was leaving Firaxis back in February, but his final day at the studio where he made his name and worked for more than twenty years was still very fresh in his memory. "It's surreal," he says. "For probably the next ten years, I'll refer to it as 'we' when we talk about Firaxis, and it's sad to think it's not the right pronoun anymore. It's exciting, but a little terrifying."

On the face of it, that panic might seem unfounded. Over the last decade, Solomon has become one of the most revered names in turn-based strategy games. Having cut his teeth on many of Sid Meier's Civilization games in his early years at Firaxis, he went on to become the designer who spearheaded the revival of XCOM with Enemy Unknown in 2012, before going on to direct its even more beloved sequel XCOM 2 and its War Of The Chosen expansion a few years later. Most recently, he was creative director on Marvel's Midnight Suns, which allowed him to marry his life-long love of Marvel comic books with the thrilling tactical combat he's so well known for.

Solomon's next adventure, though, won't have the certainty of Midnight Suns' supercharged attack cards, or even the tease of an XCOM hit percentage backing him up. For not only is it Solomon's third day of unemployment when we speak; it's also the day after he revealed his plans to leave turn-based tactics games behind altogether. Instead, his sights are now set on the life simulation genre, a move that, at first glance, seems at odds with his career as a strategy designer. But over the course of our hour-long chat, it becomes increasingly clear that life sims have been a life-long obsession for Solomon, and he might have even made one by now had the development of XCOM 2 gone a little differently.

How to Take Part in Genshin Impact Herbal Remedies Web Event

When new playable characters join Genshin Impact, HoYoVerse holds web events to "introduce" them, and the one for Baizhu is Herbal Remedies. It is now available online for players until May 3, 2023. During it, your goal is to figure out how to make medicines alongside the doctor. If you complete all three prescriptions, you can get 2 Mystic Enhancement Ores, 3 Nagadus Emerald Fragments, 40 Primogems, and 20,000 Mora.

How to complete the Genshin Impact Herbal Remedies web event

The event begins with Changsheng warning Baizhu not to work too hard and wear himself out, and he then mentions getting a new apprentice to assist him at Bubu Pharmacy. From there, you'll need to click the Prescription button to check the medicines you need to make for Uncle Tian, Master Lu, and Hongdou. Images for the three ingredients needed appear. There's also an option to unlock additional "special" prescriptions via experimenting with the ingredients you have.

After that, you click the Medicine Box. This shows the ingredients available for the various remedies. You'll need to drag the right ones into the pot next to Baizhu to create the potion. Up to five can be added to make a brew. You'll then be able to make the recipes shown in the Prescriptions section to complete the task. There are only pictures shown in the hints and no names, but each item corresponds to things you'd find in Liyue like Qingxin and Violetgrass. So, for example, the Uncle Tian prescription would involve a Lotus Head, a Qingxin, and three Lizard Tails.

Here are the reward tiers for this event:

  • Complete Uncle Tian and Master Lu's Brews: 3 Mystic Enhancement Ores and 20,000 Mora
  • Complete Uncle Tian, Master Lu, and Hongdou's Brews: 3 Nagadus Emerald Fragments and 40 Primogems
  • Share Qiqi's Flier: Wallpaper

Genshin Impact is available on the PS4, PS5, PC, and mobile devices, and the Herbal Remedies event runs until May 3, 2023. As for in-game events, A Parade of Providence is live now.

Koei Tecmo updated Atelier Ryza 3 on all platforms, and the new patch adds a Legend Maximum Difficulty and a way to change the game's background music (BGM). Both of these are free additions. All you need to do is update it on the PS4, PS5, Switch, or PC, and they'll be available.

With regards to the Legend difficulty level in Atelier Ryza 3, Gust and Koei Tecmo didn't explain how it will affect enemy strength and playable characters. However, it did remind players that once the patch is applied, they can change to it at any time. To switch, head to the options menu. Then, go to the Difficulty section under Game Settings. You can then select Legendary from there.

The Fate/Grand Order Arcade collaboration event in Fate/Grand Order is now live, with three new Servants that players can get. Sodom's Beast/Draco and Locusta are in the gacha, and Setanta is a free welfare Servant. The gacha for the event will run from April 26, 2023 to May 17, 2023.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=044xrQEJxis

Sodom's Beast/Draco marks the debut of a playable Beast-class Servant. As a warning, players must complete either the event story or an interlude quest in order to unlock Sodom's Beast/Draco's third Ascension look in battle. She resembles Nero Claudius, though her personality is a lot more abrasive and ruthless.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zv7AWIpVkAw

Locusta is a 4-star Assassin Servant who can inflict the Poison debuff on enemies with her skill. In history, Locusta was a poison-maker who worked for Nero. Nero hired her for assassinations, as well as to teach other people her craft. BLACK, who designed other Servants like Jason, was the artist for Locusta in Fate/Grand Order.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U639WI8Siiw

Finally, Setanta, who is the younger version of Cu Chulainn, will be the free Servant you get from completing the Fate/Grand Order Arcade event. Like in the arcade game, he is a Saber-class Servant. Ayumu Murase has reprised his role as Setanta. Murase's other roles include Venti from Genshin Impact and Ryo in Devilman Crybaby.

The Caligula Effect 2 PS5

NIS America announced The Caligula Effect 2 will also be heading to the PS5. The company revealed the JRPG from FuRyu will show up on the console in Fall 2023. An exact release date isn't available yet, but physical copies will also be available for $49.99. There's also a reminder trailer to help people see what's going on.

As in the original The Caligula Effect Overdose, The Caligula Effect 2 will involve PS5 owners being stuck in a virtual world with a sort of AI Vocaloid virtuadoll called Regret in charge of it. Everyone within is essentially in high school forever. Your avatar will join the Go-Home Club to try and end this simulation, though Regret's Obbligato Musicians will attempt to stop you.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1h0auqEip0k&ab_channel=NISAmerica

This means both The Caligula Effect games will be on the system by the time 2023 ends. Back in February 2023, NIS America announced a The Caligula Effect Overdose port. That will launch on the system on May 30, 2023, so people would have enough time to likely finish the first game ahead of the second.

The Caligula Effect 2 will come to the PS5 in Fall 2023, and it is immediately available on the PS4, Switch, and PC.

Genshin Impact Honkai Star Rail and Impact 3rd Twitter Account Login Warnings Shared

Once again, HoYoVerse sent out a warning about people using Twitter to access its games. The first such warning happened back in February 2023. Now the company took to the Genshin Impact, Honkai Impact 3rd, Honkai: Star Rail, and Tears of Themis accounts to warn about using the Twitter account login feature with all four games. Notably, it told players again to tie accounts to email addresses. This time, it cautioned that the process should be completed by April 29, 2023, as that's when Twitter API will get more restrictive.

Essentially, the same sort of Twitter account login warning appears on the Genshin Impact, Honkai Impact 3rd, Honkai: Star Rail, and Tears of Themis accounts. Here's the Honkai: Star Rail one as an example.

To make the change from using a Twitter account login for one of these four games to an email, you first need to the HoYoVerse website. Log into your account as normal, using the typical method. In this case, a Twitter account. On the Account Security Settings page, you can set a username, email, mobile device, and associated Apple, Facebook, Game Center, Google Twitter, and PSN accounts. Honkai Star Rail Seele talent video

The newest "Keeping Up With Star Rail" video on the Honkai: Star Rail YouTube channel centers on Seele. Aside from the host Owlbert, Bronya appears as a guest on the show to talk about the playable character. In the actual game, Bronya and Seele started out with an antagonistic relationship due to their different factions.

Seele as she appears in Honkai: Star Rail resides in the Underworld of Jarilo-VI. She is a key member of Wildfire, which is the Underworld's version of the Silvermane Guards. Her nickname is "Babochka," which is the Russian word for butterfly. Though she and Bronya are from opposing factions, Bronya has a high opinion of her skills, which is evident in the video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xNJyKHUNaPA

Seele is a single-target Quantum attacker who follows The Hunt path. Her gameplay revolves around her Resurgence Talent. With Resurgence, she gains an attack buff when she defeats an enemy and receives an extra turn in combat. Defeating an enemy on a Resurgence-given turn does not grant her another free turn, so Seele cannot monopolize the game. On the field, she can gain Stealth for 20 seconds, which hides her from enemies.

Honkai: Star Rail is readily available on mobile devices and Windows PC. The PS4 and PS5 versions of the game will come out later. Seele is a limited 5-star character in Honkai: Star Rail, which means she will not be in the gacha until she re-runs.

Atelier Ryza 3 sales figures

Within a little over a month since its debut, Atelier Ryza 3: Alchemist of the End & the Secret Key sold over 300,000 units. This makes it the fastest game from the Secret subseries to break that milestone. Gust also stated that the team has been delighted to read through players' thoughts on the game.

Atelier Ryza 3: Alchemist of the End & the Secret Key debuted on March 23, 2023 for Japan, with other countries getting the game on March 24. The sales figure takes into account all of the platforms that the game is on. As well, it calculates both physical and digital copies. Atelier Ryza 3 is the third and possibly final entry in the Secret subseries. As the game focuses on the theme of endings, it might be the last one in which Ryza is the protagonist. It plays very similar to other Atelier games, though it has the largest playable cast at eleven characters.

Junzo Hosoi is the producer of the game. Back in 2021, he conducted an interview with Siliconera about Atelier Ryza 2. During that interview, he stated that the possibility of Atelier Ryza 3 would depend on fan support. The existence of the game, as well as its strong starting sales, indicate the popularity of the Atelier Ryza series. The first game was the best-selling Atelier game, and the sequel sold over 150,000 units in its first week alone.

Atelier Ryza 3: Alchemist of the End & the Secret Key is readily available on the PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, and Windows PC via Steam.

Genshin Impact Baizhu and Ganyu Banners Have Kaveh, Fischl, Candace

The Genshin Impact new Baizhu banner and Ganyu rerun banner are both about to begin on May 2, 2023. Ahead of that, the company shared which other four-star characters will be featured. We already knew Kaveh would appear. Now, we know Candace and Fischl will join him. There will also be an Epitome Invocation that includes the Amos' Bow for Ganyu and Jadefall's Splendor for Baizhu.

In both cases, the additional four-star characters appearing on both the Baizhu and Ganyu banners are good for causing elemental reactions with them in Genshin Impact. Baizhu is a five-star Dendro catalyst user, while Ganyu is a five-star Cryo archer. So combining Baizhu with the four-star Electro archer Fischl will trigger Quicken, while with Ganyu that pairing results in Superconduct. Baizhu and the four-star Dendro claymore-wielder Kaveh together results in Sprawling Greenery, while adding Fischl to that group causes Spread. Baizhu with the four-star Hydro polearm user Candace causes Bloom to happen, while Candace and Ganyu's abilities causes the Frozen effect. There's also the beneficial Hyperbloom reaction that could occur when Baizhu, Fischl, and Candace are in the same party and use their abilities.

Genshin Impact is available for the PS4, PS5, PC, and mobile devices, and the Baizhu banner and Ganyu rerun banner run May 2-23, 2023.

Interview: Discussing Trinity Trigger's Inspirations and Characters

Creating a new IP is a lot of work. However, when certain developers are involved and a project leans on certain sorts of gameplay staples and inspirations, it can make it a welcoming property. This is basically what happened with Three Rings' Trinity Trigger. It pulls ideas from older action-RPGs, like Legend of Mana, to tell a new story. To help learn more about Trinity Trigger and what went into it, as well as how its characters were developed and past games influenced it, Siliconera spoke with Director Takumi Isobe about the project.

Jenni Lada: When did development on Trinity Trigger begin?

Takumi Isobe: We first started planning Trinity Trigger around the start of 2019. From there, we contacted the key staff we wanted involved and got to work. Unfortunately, the Covid pandemic wreaked havoc partway through our process, so development ended up taking longer than we initially planned.

Which 1990s RPGs most influenced the game and its development?

Isobe: I used Secret of Mana as a benchmark title during development, so you could call it a significant influence. Speaking personally, I think the Final Fantasy series is my biggest inspiration. I'll never forget the surprise I felt when I first exited the Floating Continent in Final Fantasy III to find an even larger area
to explore.

Both Yuki Nobuteru and Hiroki Kikuta previously worked on Secret of Mana. How is Trinity Trigger affected by that and what did they learn from it when building this new game's world?

Isobe: I touched on this in my answer to the previous question, but we started this project with the intention of creating something Secret of Mana fans would enjoy. I myself replayed Secret of Mana for research while planning Trinity Trigger. Three key features made an impression on me: music, natural beauty, and cooperation. These features became our basis for creating a completely new world.

I believe music was the most iconic aspect of Secret of Mana, so I approached Hiroki Kikuta, the original composer, and shared my ideas for Trinity Trigger with him. He composed the soundtrack with his own unique and nostalgic touch, and naturally it turned out amazing.

Triggers can transform into weapons in Trinity Trigger. What led to that design decision and what kind of balancing went into making sure they all work well together?

Isobe: In my very first proposal, I conceptualized Triggers as entities that simply possessed weapons. I envisioned a system that would allow players to rotate through Triggers, giving weapons a variety of effects and spells to utilize in battle. As the world of Trinitia took shape, the thought occurred to us that it might be more endearing for the Triggers themselves to transform into weapons.

As for their designs, we started from the elements of fire, water, and wind. We ordered designs for each element, taking care to give each Trigger a unique silhouette. Specifically, we asked our artists to design each Trigger to be two-legged, four-legged, or flying so that they could be quickly differentiated from one other. We worked especially closely with Trigger designers Atsuko Nishida, Megumi Mizutani, and Tomohiro Kitakaze. In addition to electronic communications, we discussed designs together over dinner
or desserts.

Players step into the role of Warrior of Chaos throughout the game. How do you establish the distinction between chaos and order? How does the game establish areas of good and evil between them?

Isobe: First, order and chaos do not equate to good and evil. However, just like in the real world, there are many people in the world of Trinitia who hold that view. Of course, absolute order can be used for evil, while chaos is a good thing in moderation. It is important to keep everything in balance.

Within our setting, the greatest distinction is that "Order" represents rules and regulations, while "Chaos" represents freedom. Rigid concepts like time belong to Order, while things like nature belong to Chaos, since it freely blooms in disarray.
[caption id="attachment_960783" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Interview: Discussing Trinity Trigger's Inspirations and Characters Image via XSEED[/caption]
Only local co-op is mentioned in the initial trailer. What led to that multiplayer decision for Trinity Trigger? Was online multiplayer ever explored?

Isobe: Although the COVID pandemic has made it difficult to meet others in person today, that was not the case while planning Trinity Trigger. We wanted to bring back the excitement from the old days of local co-op
games, where you would play side-by-side with family and friends while looking at the same screen, yelling and helping each other, and sometimes even getting in each other's way. With that in mind, we
never considered online multiplayer.

There are three playable characters in Trinity Trigger. How did you work to set them apart?

Isobe: I asked Raita Kazama to design three unique characters, each based on one of the primary colors: red, blue, and yellow. At the same time, I worked with Yura Kubota, the scenario writer, to determine each character's personality and mannerisms.

On that note, each character's name is another unique characteristic that I put a lot of thought behind.

Almost all the character and town names in the game were chosen by me. Since the main characters were based on colors, their names reflect that theming. Cyan's name is self-explanatory, but people often ask us what Zantis' name means. We searched far and wide for words related to yellow in various
languages before settling on the final name. "Zantis" is derived from the English pronunciation of the Greek word "Xanthos," meaning yellow.

Which Trinity Trigger character took the most time to flesh out and develop?

Isobe: Cyan and Zantis took the most time. Cyan was the first character we designed, so it was difficult creating him from scratch. It took quite a while just to settle on the general direction of his character.

Zantis, on the other hand, proved a longstanding challenge. We struggled with him even as many of the main characters, such as Cyan, Elise, and Lime, were already being finalized. His design's silhouette needed to stand on its own, while also matching Cyan and Elise, the tone of his interactions with Rai, and his carefree "big bro" personality.

Incidentally, we were able to finalize Violet's design the quickest. She is exactly how I imagined she would be. As a result, I think she has become popular among fans. If we can make a sequel, I would like to feature Violet more. (laughs)

What do you most want people to know about Trinity Trigger?

Isobe: First and foremost, I want you to have fun! But I also hope you enjoy reading the instruction manual that comes with the physical edition. The smell and feel of a paper manual are a rare treat these days. A lot
of care went into its design, so please take time to appreciate the details. By the way, the base design of the manual was mostly created by me. (laughs)

After you've read the instruction manual, please enjoy defying the gods with Cyan and his friends in Trinity Trigger's main story. What do you think will become of the chosen Warrior of Chaos? See for yourself!

Trinity Trigger is available for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC.
