Final Fantasy XVI is out in mere weeks, arriving on PlayStation 5 on June 22. And while the game looks like it'll be quite a bit of fun to play, questions over the radical shift in tone for the series remain. And in a recent blog, the developers shared some of the thoughts, considerations, and challenges that went…

Asus ROG still trying to make mad Saga happen

Amid the sea of groundbreaking tech, exciting new products, and swirling rumors that is Computex, Asus has taken a decidedly leftfield route.      League of Legends may get a huge Dota 2 style update

There has always been a longstanding rivalry between League of Legends and Dota 2. Given both games are the only true breakout MOBAs, the competition between them remains fierce despite Dota 2's apparent decline over the last few years. In the wake of an update that saw the Dota map swell in size, as well as the addition of a new hero type among other substantial changes, I asked League of Legends executive producer Jeremy Lee if we can expect to see LoL follow suit.

MGS3 Steam update hints at many more Metal Gear remakes

The MGS3 Steam page has finally arrived, and seems to suggest that Metal Gear Solid Delta Snake Eater, to give it its full title, may only be the first game in a planned series of remakes by Konami. The upcoming stealth game, which is set during the Cold War-era 1960s, is certainly the earliest episode in terms of Metal Gear story chronology, and based on a couple of hints, it seems MGS3 Remake could spark a whole-new strand of Snakey sequels.

Street Fighter 6 release date, open beta times, and more

Want to learn more about the Street Fighter 6 release date? The next evolution of the Street Fighter series is almost here, focusing heavily on single-player elements to ensure there's plenty of content for every level of fighter. Street Fighter 5 was heavily criticized at launch for its lack of playable content outside of versus mode, and while this satisfied most high-level players, casual players found there was very little to keep them entertained.

Capcom has taken its time developing Street Fighter 6 to ensure they don't repeat the same mistakes again. It features a brand new single-player story mode which gives players a chance to explore Metro City as a custom fighter. Street Fighter 6 is shaping up to become one of the best fighting games and, as per our Street Fighter 6 review, potentially one of the best PC games overall. The Street Fighter 6 release date has been officially confirmed for Q2 2022.

Total War Pharaoh release date, trailer, and setting

What is the Total War: Pharaoh release date? The upcoming historical strategy game is the latest in Creative Assembly's long-running Total War series. The developer recently revealed Total War: Pharaoh with a cinematic trailer, which opens with a chance encounter between two scarab beetles on an ancient Egyptian battlefield, with the glittering pyramids in the distance. Set around the year 1200 BCE, it's by far the farthest Total War has ever gone back in history, almost to the time of the first pitched battle ever recorded.

We've assembled everything you need to know about Total War: Pharaoh right here, including the strategy game's release date. You can learn even more about it in our in-depth Total War: Pharaoh preview, featuring an interview with creative director Maya Georgieva.

     Is Street Fighter 6 crossplay?

Want to know if you can play Street Fighter 6 crossplay? Crossplay enables you to play with fighters on other platforms. Since SF6 is being released on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC, this feature would give you more opponents to go up against in both casual and ranked play.

Of course, you can play the fighting game against AI bots, but there's nothing better than dominating another real-life player. Street Fighter 5 had crossplay functionality, so we'd expect the same from Street Fighter 6. This is Capcom, though, so you can never expect the obvious. Here's what we know about Street Fighter 6 crossplay before the game's release date in early June.

Street Fighter 6 roster – every confirmed character

Want to know who made it onto the Street Fighter 6 roster? Looking back to older games in the series, Street Fighter 4 launched with 25 characters, but the lacklustre Street Fighter 5 featured just 16 characters on day one. Capcom appears to be learning from its past mistakes with Street Fighter 6's roster, bringing a mix of fan favourites, revamped returning characters, and new fighters.

While the Street Fighter 6 release date is pencilled in for June 2023, there's still plenty of time for the devs to reveal a few more surprises to the roster. In the Street Fighter 6 showcase, Capcom announced the Year 1 Character Pass contains four characters, one new and three returning fighters. The Street Fighter 6 roster features 18 characters at launch.

Total War Pharaoh ditches fantasy for a more thrilling reality

The Total War series is old enough now to split into two eras. Beginning in 2000 with Shogun: Total War, the strategy game series began life firmly rooted in recorded history, which culminated with the release of Total War: Attila in 2015. The launch of Total War: Warhammer in 2016 ushered in a new age for Total War, one in which even the historical games like Total War: Three Kingdoms and Total War Saga: Troy featured fantastical elements and superhuman characters. With Total War: Pharaoh, Creative Assembly is returning to the series' grounded, historical beginnings - but not without adding some new ideas of its own. We had the chance to spend some hands-on time with the game for this Total War: Pharaoh preview, and we also interviewed creative director Maya Georgieva on its incoming innovations.

     Street Fighter 6 Luke guide

Are you searching for the best Street Fighter 6 Luke combos and special moves? Luke is a more well-rounded character compared to his previous iteration. As a result, he is one of the better characters to use if you're new to fighting games, as nothing he does is particularly complex. His move inputs are similar to other beginner-friendly fighters, such as Ryu or Ken, but he puts a unique spin with follow-ups to Overdrive moves that end combos.

Fighting games have some characters that are naturally easier to learn than others, but even so, Street Fighter 6 Luke is rather difficult to master without some guidance. So, to help you get to grips with all of Luke's moves, we've had hands-on time with the game to give you all the techniques available to him and some tips for how to play the character in Street Fighter 6 by utilizing his strengths and learning which moves can lead to massive combos. Want to know what the best Street Fighter 6 Kimberly combos and special moves are? With every new Street Fighter game, several faces make their debut, and this game is no exception. One of them is Kimberly - an American girl who uses the same bushido ninja fighting style as Guy from the Final Fight series.

However, Kimberly is more than just a modern reskin of a classic character from the long-running fighting game series. Her repertoire uses more flair than Guy's rather traditional Bushin-style, including one of the game's truly match-altering super arts. We spent some time with her and fellow newcomers Luke and Jamie during a previous Street Fighter 6 beta, gathering tips on the best Street Fighter 6 Kimberly moves and how to work them into the longest, hardest-hitting combos.

Our Diablo 4 review waxes lyrical about the game's "harrowing vistas" and "over-the-top gore", but all this eye candy can push both your CPU and GPU hard. As such, it's important to check what tier of the Diablo 4 system requirements your PC meets before leveraging optimal settings for an fps boost. Thankfully, there are some options you can tweak for a sizeable performance uplift without greatly impacting visuals.      Best Diablo 4 builds according to Blizzard and us

What are the best Diablo 4 builds? From the haunted forests of Scosglen to the whispering winter winds of the Fractured Peaks, choosing the best Diablo 4 builds is a must for avid fans of Blizzard's RPG. While I could bore you with horrible, mid-tier troll builds, I've got something better. From PCGamesN's exclusive interviews with some of Sanctuary's finest, I have a list of the builds that the developers are obsessed with so that you can try them, too.

Of the five current Diablo 4 classes, the developers lean very much towards the enchanting Sorceress and her myriad of different elemental magics. I, however, will be locking in Diablo 4's Rogue when the release date rolls around, so have included my personal favorite Diablo build for those who prefer to spend their time scheming away in the shadows. Additionally, we've also got all of the links out to our dedicated build guides down below, which we created after many hours of hands-on time. You can read more about that in our Diablo 4 review for a full rundown.

When RPS awarded Kentucky Route Zero the title of Game Of The Year in 2013, only two episodes out of an eventual five had been released. If this sounds like a bland statement of fact, just think about it for a second. I can't recall any other time an episodic adventure game has received GOTY-level praise before it was even concluded, let alone only 40% done.

Episodes three through five arrived sporadically: in spring 2014, summer 2016, and — after what must have been an agonising hiatus — the start of 2020. Having bypassed this wait to play the game for the first time only recently, I feel wistfully as though I'll never share quite the same fond feelings for it as contemporary fans (like our own reviews ranger Rachel, who recently named KRZ one of her all-time favourite indie games). But I'm also quite relieved that I didn't have to exercise that kind of patience. I mean, I'm very good at neglecting to carry on with games for years at a time despite thoroughly enjoying what I've played so far. But I like doing it on my terms, you know?

I initially attempted to do something a bit clever with this retrospective. I wanted to play the first two episodes that earned KRZ our GOTY nod in 2013, and write up on them as a discrete entity as far as possible. Only then did I plan to carry on the game and add some follow-up impressions, perhaps assessing whether I thought RPS would still award the big chocolate medal to the full game as it finally came to be in 2020. But, after sitting with my feelings about Episodes 1-2 for a couple of weeks, any intelligent observations I might have made were drowned out by an increasingly loud, insistent voice in the back of my head howling: "I WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS." Actually, that might be a good impression to just let stand on its own merits.

Peppers? Why not. Carrot? Absolutely. Spinach? Don't mind if I do. My bolognese is about as authentically Italian as Super Mario, but it doesn't matter. I'm not trying to make Massimo Bottura cry by reminding him of his nonna's cooking. It's a dreary Tuesday night and I'm craving my olive-laden concoction. I'm making this bolognese just for me.

Slayers X: Terminal Aftermath: Vengance of the Slayer reminded me a lot of my bolognese. It's a game created for particular tastes, a unique proposition that sort of defies conventional thinking. A big, bold swing that - if you have the palate for it - is absolutely brilliant.

FFVII June 2023 Calendar Features Yuffie and Sonon from the Remake

June 2023's begun, and that means a new set of FFVII Remake calendar images. Square Enix took to Twitter to release the latest batch. This time, only designs from the remake appear. People can choose between a desktop wallpaper image with key art of both Yuffie and Sonon from FFVII Remake, or mobile portrait-style images of each character separately.

Here's the official announcement with all three options. Since no FFVII characters' birthdays fall in June 2023, no dates are highlighted in the June 2023 calendar. (When this does happen, the day of the character's birthday usually appears with a white circle around it. This happened with Tifa's May 3rd birthday.)

The FFVII monthly calendar is a regular thing. Square Enix always releases images every month via social media. The pattern that started earlier this year involved releasing options featuring the original FFVII character key art and new Remake designs. This happened with the May 2023 Aerith calendars. However, the FFVII Remake Yuffie and Sonon ones break tradition by only offering one design, albeit with two mobile options.

Final Fantasy VII Remake is available for the PS4, PS5, and PC. FFVII Rebirth is set to come to the PS5 in Winter 2023. We'll also see a FFVII Ever Crisis closed beta in 2023.

Review: Survive One Cruel Summer in Loop8

It's a shame how many good ideas end up disappointing when put into action. The success of visual novels means we're getting memorable or enjoyable hybrids like Digimon Survive or Devil Survivor! The Persona series' relationship and daily life systems mean developers try implementing similar mechanics into their own games! I hoped Loop8: Summer of Gods would be good, because it had these elements that called Gnosia and Persona to mind. Unfortunately, it feels both obtuse and pretentious, caught up in how clever it wants to be.

Novus "Nini" Nemo was raised in outer space on a space station. Beings known as Kegai assault the earth below, and people took to the skies in the hopes of escaping it. Unfortunately, that didn't work out too well, and now he's in the small, rural village of Ashihara. Its apparently known for being oddly safe from these unknown beings, but that's about to change. The Kegai are about to pierce a barrier and assault this apparent last bastion. When they do, they'll "infect" one of the people there, putting them at risk. However, Nini features the Demon Sight ability, as evidenced by being able to see things he shouldn't and spy on characters' current actions, moods, and desires, and finds he's not the only "gifted" or unusual resident in the town. And so, he'll regularly head into Yomotsu Hirasaka at the town's shrine with certain neighbors to face the Kegai there and perhaps save the person being used as their host.

[caption id="attachment_965885" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Loop8 Image via XSEED Games[/caption]

We go into Loop8 knowing we only have the month of August. What happens when it ends? Well, if you didn't make the right choices or fall in battle to the Kegai, you die and the loop restarts. There are different endings tied to actions and affections, as you can imagine from a game with relationship elements. You essentially need to live each day as best you can, making good choices that build up the stats of Nini and his allies and form relationships. Doing things like attending classes and training at certain locations build up things like stamina and strength. You can happen upon blessings by talking to people or investigating certain suspicious environmental objects, prompting flying squirrel messenger of the gods Musasa to let you know about the latest buff. (It's very annoying, but you can choose to "skip" these in the options.) Visiting the cafe or restaurant will restore your energy and stamina, as will getting candy from Saru. So during daylight hours, you'll check the map to see where people are so you can talk to them, visit certain training spots, perhaps attend classes, and practice time management.

This means you can also see the trips to Yomotsu Hirasaka and deadlines to "save" people from Kegai attacks as being like heading into the Midnight Channel by a certain date. Nini can ask characters to "go for a walk" to add up to two to his party. Once you do, you can head to what is essentially this other plane of existence to face the Kegai. You'll need to get magatamas to unlock access to its boss fights, then choose attacks tied to the feelings of friendship, love, and hate to assault the boss and other Ashihara resident tied to them. These plodding assaults are turn-based and, while the more poignant opponents might look impressive, are unfortunately lackluster. There's no real sense of strategy here, especially since you can only choose Nini's actions. You can use Demon Sight to predict responses, which is interesting. But winning these major bouts mainly comes down to ensuring you pick two allies who the possessed person you're facing "likes" to make the fight easier, especially since there's no surefire way to guarantee healing abilities will be used.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3or6Zdhu-hU&t=118s&ab_channel=XSEEDgames

Loop8 is a game where caring about characters is critical. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to do so. Yes, I'll admit some fondness for some of them. I'm a Hori, Ichika, Konoha, and Machina fan. But it's more for specific character designs or certain things I know about them, rather than a real sense of connection. Which is especially distressing considering the game emphasizes the connections between everyone by looking feelings of friendship, love, and hate. But then, it's hard to connect when it feels like they talk at you rather than with you. Many interactions involve selecting base concepts like "get to know better," "flatter," "annoy them," tease them," "let's go for a walk," or if you're lucky a suggestion that will lead to an actual event. But instead of actually learning about someone, most suggestions just… feature a generic response and a small stat bump in exchange for expending energy. Not to mention I've found the rates of success may not be as clear cut as the suggestions, as 50/50 chance basically meant Nini's attempt to connect would fail. So unless you really push toward building a relationship with someone and start to unlock those events or trigger another loop, you might not connect with some of the people around town.

What also hurts it is the amount of investment Loop8 seems to demand. I didn't really start to "get" the game until my third loop, and it really feels geared toward triggering multiple ones—either via dying or purposely triggering the "loop" option in a conversation. It quickly gets repetitive, since you need to dedicate yourself to rebuilding relationships and stats once a loop restarts. It is easier to rebuild after a loop, but still. This is exacerbated by the general pacing being a mess. (It can take 10 minutes to run from the front gates of the school to the front door, even though it's right there!) You can unlock new events and text, but much of the script repeats from one loop to the next. It also doesn't help that some of your early conversations with characters will allude to things to come or immediately imply certain levels of familiarity,

[caption id="attachment_965887" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Image via XSEED Games Image via XSEED Games[/caption]

But even worse is knowing that means heading into Yomotsu Hirasaka and battling again. The battle system is such a chore, especially since new skills are tied to performing actions and training during the day. When you're in this underworld area, you need to directly travel to locations to find the glowing orbs you can interact with to gain magatama and reach the fights. Since there's no traditional leveling system, any battles before a boss are pretty much pointless. Fighting them does boost a stat, perhaps, but it's so easy to build relationships and earn stats from actions during the day that it's better to rush in and face the foe. It's such a slog. Which is a shame, because I feel like even just allowing us to control our allies actions could have been a great step toward making the turn-based RPG elements a little more enjoyable.

Loop8 squanders its goodwill. This is a game Marvelous and SIEG Games clearly want to be poignant and important. However, its frustratingly obtuse, the pacing is problematic, and it wears out its welcome with tedious interactions. I love the concept and the idea of wandering around Ashihara. Some characters are memorable too! But after a few loops and constant Musasa intrusions, I was tempted to let the Kegai win if it would shut that squirrel up.

Loop8: Summer of Gods will be available for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on June 6, 2023.

Watch the Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection Switch and PC Launch Trailer

As is common with Atlus games, there's an Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection launch trailer showing what to expect from the Nintendo Switch and PC releases. This is more of a summary, rather than a focused look on a specific element like mapping. After watching, people will immediately find all three games either individually or as a collection in both storefronts.

The launch trailer first shows what it's like to explore the remastered dungeons. Then, it shows the static, updated art used for characters and locations in town. From there, it focuses on gameplay. We get to see some dungeon biomes, as well as seafaring in Etrian Odyssey III. After that, we see how NPCs can assign quests, we form a five-person party, and learn skills from the sill trees. Near the end of the video, we see how fighting enemies and exploring the dungeon nets us materials to fill up our catalogue and earn new equipment.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RSeXc8JwwFw&ab_channel=OfficialATLUSWest

Atlus also offered a reminder about the free DLC offer. If someone purchases one of the three games separately or the collection by June 14, 2023, they'll get character portraits from past Atlus games. Persona 5's Joker and Soul Hackers 2's Ring are in the original game as options. Etrian Odyssey II HD gets Persona 4's Teddie and SMT III Nocturne's Demi-Fiend as possible portraits. Persona 3's Aigis and SMT V's Nahobino are the two for Etrian Odyssey III HD.

Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection is available for the Nintendo Switch and PC.

Samurai Shodown rollback update

SNK Global released a statement about the planned rollback netcode update for Samurai Shodown. The initial release window for the update was set for Spring 2023, but it has since been delayed until Summer 2023. The reasons given for pushing back the implementation of rollback netcode are various setbacks and other circumstances that appeared during the preparation of the update.

SNK announced the inclusion of rollback netcode in Samurai Shodown back in November 2022. Ever since, the game received a Community Beta Test for the update back in February 2023. Alongside the announcement of the delay, SNK also announced that a second Community Beta Test for the Samurai Shodown rollback netcode update will be held in June 2023. The exact days the test will happen will be announced at a later date.

You can read the statement SNK put out here:

https://twitter.com/SNKPofficial/status/1664089380242223105

The version of Samurai Shodown to receive rollback is the 2019 reboot of the franchise. Additionally, the Neo Geo Collection included rollback back when it released on June 2020. The collection includes the first five titles in the series, alongside two updates for Samurai Shodown V, one of them never released before.

Samurai Shodown is immediately available for the PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and Windows PC via Steam. A second Community Beta Test for the upcoming update will appear sometime in June 2023. Rollback netcode has not been announced for the Nintendo Switch version of the game.

Yuji Naka prison

The prosecution is seeking two years and six months in prison for Yuji Naka in his case of insider trading, as well as a fine of 2.5 million yen and a surcharge of 170 million yen. The third trial for the case involving Sonic creator Yuji Naka and former employer Square Enix was held on June 1, 2023 at the Tokyo District Court. The verdict will be revealed on July 7, 2023. [Thanks, DenFamiNico Gamer and Yahoo News!]

This proposal in the insider trading case is not the final sentence. If the Tokyo District Court pursues the prosecution's proposal, Yuji Naka won't only have to go to prison, but will have to pay the equivalent in Japanese Yen to $17,880 USD as a fine and over $1.2 million dollars as a surcharge.

During the trial, the prosecution argued that defendant Naka misused his authority to gain an unfair advantage over ordinary investors. Meanwhile, the defense asked for a suspension of sentence as well as a reduction of the fine and surcharge, alleging that defendant Naka did not actively seek out insider information during his time at the company, as that the information was mistakenly sent to him.

Yuji Naka is accused of violating the Financial Instruments and Exchange Act, after he invested in Square Enix stock with insider knowledge of two unannounced games at the time, these being Dragon Quest Tact and Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier. On March 2, 2023, Naka pleaded guilty during the first trial of the insider trading case.
