Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Wednesday, December 27, 2023 1:00 PM It has once again fallen to me to pick out my favourite features, this time from 2023. This is a terrible task, because there are always a lot I like. I've tried to cut it down a bit from last year, for both our sakes, dear reader, and decided that previews don't count (because as a format previews do a lot of the work for you, to be honest). Even reducing my task this way made it tough to whittle things down, and I'm sure I've missed some excellent articles and writers - and that I will be corrected in the comments! Still, read on for a place to start if you want to look back at the year that was on RPS. We've got interviews, community nonsense, and even more interviews for you to enjoy here. The Xbox Series X and S has increasingly been less of a platform for buying games and more of one for Game Pass subscriptions. It's no surprise, then, that all three of our Xbox Game of the Year 2023 selections appear on the service. Check out our picks below, and keep checking back this week for more awards!
These awards represent the consensus of the Siliconera staff. For more of the year's award selections, check out our Game of the Year 2023 archive.
Hi-Fi Rush
We say games "came out of nowhere" a lot, but rarely do games go from unannounced to out in one fell swoop, and even more rarely are they this polished and stylish. Tango Gameworks' Hi-Fi Rush brings rhythm into its action, with frantic musical gameplay and bright environments that echo a bit of that old Jet Set Radio feel. But it's very much its own thing! And we didn't forget about it, even after many packed months. If you missed it, maybe give it a look.
Starfield
While Hi-Fi Rush was a shadowdrop, Starfield is definitely the opposite: rumbling to life slowly at Bethesda over decades and officially announced nearly a decade ago. It's enormous, full of systems and conversations and worlds to explore. And after a few decades of Fallout and Elder Scrolls games? Yeah, we're psyched to see a different sort of environment for Bethesda's signature brand of storytelling.
Siliconera Xbox Game of the Year Winner: Sea of Stars
There have been many games in recent years that play off the nostalgia of the Chrono Trigger era, but few have managed to recapture that magic. Sea of Stars goes past the wink-wink-nudge-nudge referential approach, and delivers a world of characters that is worthy of its own generation of future nostalgia plays. The semi-active combat and interesting puzzles keep players engaged, and the execution of its pixel art style is exactly what you'd want. That makes it our Xbox Game of the Year 2023.

Key staff members from Koei Tecmo's Omega Force, Gust, and Ruby Party will have new reveals in 2024. The teasers came from the year-end messages they sent annually to Japanese media outlets. [Thanks, 4Gamer!]
Tomohiko Sho, the head of Omega Force, is preparing to release new DLC packs for Fate/Samurai Remnant in 2024. However, he also teased an important game announcement in the same year:
Omega Force is primarily well-known for the Dynasty Warriors games. The series producer Akihiro Suzuki also chimed in to note his regret in failing to reveal a new console game in 2023. The only title revealed in the year was Dynasty Warriors M, a mobile game developed externally by Nexon.
Omega Force is not the only team with a teaser for 2024. Gust's Junzo Hosoi, who released Atelier Ryza 3 and Atelier Marie Remake in 2023, also had something to say on the matter:
Despite the impending closure of La Corda d'Oro: Starlight Orchestra, Ruby Party's Mei Erikawa reminded people that the team's flagship Neoromance series of otome games will have its 30th anniversary in 2024:
The remaining brand teams did not offer as much in terms of upcoming teasers. Most members related to Team Ninja - namely Yosuke Hayashi, Fumihiko Yasuda, Masaaki Yamagiwa, and Masakazu Hirayama ---- are moving on from Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty to Rise of the Ronin, which will be available on the PS5 on March 22, 2024. However, the team also has Yasunori Sakuda, who is focused on maintaining both Dead or Alive Xtreme Venus Vacation and Atelier Resleriana.
A majority of staff members from Kou Shibusawa's team, including Kazuhiro Echigoya and Hisatsugu Ishikawa, are still working on releasing Romance of The Three Kingdoms 8 Remake in 2024 for PC, PS5, PS4, and Switch. Meanwhile, Kou Shibusawa himself is busy maintaining the mobile GPS game Nobunaga's Ambition: Shutsujin with Kenichi Ogasawara and Keisuke Kikuchi.
Kou Shibusawa's team also covers the Winning Post series of horse racing simulation games, and Hidehisa Yamaguchi will release Winning Post 10 2024 in Japan on March 28, 2024. However, Michi Ryu - who worked on Fire Emblem: Three Houses and Nobunaga's Ambition: Awakening - revealed that he will prepare a new title behind the scenes throughout 2024.
Finally, Koei Tecmo Games' president, Hisashi Koinuma - who also worked on series like Samurai Warriors and Dynasty Warriors: Gundam - also left a message:
Key staff members from Koei Tecmo's Omega Force, Gust, and Ruby Party have teased they will announce new reveals in 2024.

Yostar has started delivering its promise to cut off account linkages with X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, for its mobile games. Blue Archive was the first game to see the feature completely removed when it received an update on December 27, 2023. The company had also set up similar plans for Azur Lane, Arknights, and Mahjong Soul in the coming days, as 2023 draws to a close.
After the update, Blue Archive player accounts that were only connected to X/Twitter turned into guest accounts. That will render them unable to sync their accounts on re-installs and transfers to other devices. To help address the issue, Yostar has set up a special webpage that lets such users transfer login data from their existing X account to a new Yostar Account.
In early July 2023, important announcements about the eventual cessation of account linkages with the platform previously known as Twitter appeared simultaneously on Japanese Blue Archive, Azur Lane, Arknights, and Mahjong Soul official accounts. All four games share a similarity by having Yostar as their primary publisher in Japan.
Yostar had expressed its concern with the drastic changes made to Twitter's API in the early months of 2023, even before Elon Musk renamed the platform to X in late July 2023. It ultimately decided to completely remove account linkage features with the platform within 2023. The company had also been encouraging players to move on to other linkage methods, such as Yostar Accounts.
Yostar is not the only game company that removed Twitter integration following the platform's massive change to X. Sony Interactive Entertainment has also removed features that let PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 users view and post content to the same platform in November 2023.
Blue Archive, Azur Lane, Arknights, and Mahjong Soul are all available worldwide on iOS and Android mobile devices.

Ahead of Penny Blood's anticipated Spring 2025 launch, we have Penny Blood: Hellbound, which is a roguelike side story focusing on the enemy Hellhounders faction. Though something of a grind, it serves as a fairly fun way to get to know the world and characters of Penny Blood before the main game comes out.
The plot of Penny Blood: Hellbound focuses on Clara, an amnesiac girl with a natural affinity for Malice. After she encounters the Hellhounders, some mysterious mages appear and toss them into the inter-dimensional prison, Mictlan. They can't die in Mictlan, nor can they escape. Nonetheless, they decide to try and break out of it together, which requires defeating the magi who trapped them in it in the first place. On the way, they meet other villains who invite themselves to the Hellhounders' ranks. These villains can help you out in various ways in the Hellhounders' hide-out.
The game itself is fairly standard. Each character starts with a very combo, though you can pick up new skills in each run, as well as permanently enhance attributes and weapons in the hide-out. It starts out pretty easy. But as you progress through each map, the game throws more and more monsters at you until it is virtually impossible to defeat the final boss (the magi) at the end of the grid. I'm sure that it's possible to do so if you are very patient or very good at roguelikes. However, since you can collect currency after each run to level up your character, it feels like the developers intended for the player to die continuously so that they can power up their characters after each defeat.
This is fine, of course. I do not particularly mind the grind. There is a sense of accomplishment in both collecting the enhancements, as well as in seeing how you improve as you become accustomed to how the game handles. The gameplay loop is fun, and the grids and battles are pretty short. So even if you die, the feeling of losing progress is not as bad as in games such as Cult of the Lamb or Hades. I have to admit that I played this after I started the Zenless Zone Zero beta and so the cooldown on the dodge in Hellbound kept messing me up. Saving the dodge for emergencies and maintaining distance even with melee characters took me way too long to get used to. This is crucial though, since your character can only really take two to five good, clean hits before they die.
Dodging is not the only way to move around in the game. A gameplay element unique to Penny Blood: Hellbound is bloodsurfing. Now, I actually could not bloodsurf for quite a bit of my time in the closed beta but that's entirely my fault. I equipped an item that would offer me a stat boost in exchange for my ability to do so. Killing enemies will make them splatter blood everywhere, and you can use this blood to boost your movement speed. You can also get an enhancement to make them explode, which greatly helps with covering more real estate. It adds a sense of speed to the game, as well as helps you to budget your dodge, and makes the action quite thrilling.
In my opinion, the best part of the game isn't really in the actual roguelike aspect. It's in the writing! The characters and encyclopedia entries in Penny Blood: Hellbound are really fun to read about. They're very reminiscent of Shadow Hearts, though I personally think that the heavy focus on how the magi created the various monsters in Mictlan makes for less interesting lore. I liked the bestiary of Shadow Hearts a lot more because it added a lot of flavor to the low fantasy setting. Meanwhile, Hellbound's feels much too self-contained. It's nice to see the characters interacting so much with each other, especially since the Shadow Hearts series lacked a lot of inter-party conversations and dynamics. I'm hoping that this focus on the characters will continue in the main Penny Blood game.
Despite its status as a side game, it can take quite a bit of time to beat Penny Blood: Hellbound, especially if you want to unlock everything. It's very easy to pick up and does not require too much investment, especially since dying in a round will still give you currency rather than forcing you to lose everything. Even I, as someone who does not particularly enjoy roguelikes, found myself sinking hours and hours into Hellbound without ever losing my patience to the point that I wanted to quit. Now I'm hoping that there will be some sort of dungeon crawl post-game content in the main Penny Blood game.
It is important to note that I played the most basic build of the closed beta, which had four playable characters and two areas (which means two bosses). There will be a patch to add voice acting and dynamic music on January 10, 2024. Early access will open up in February 2024, and the online multiplayer version will come out in Spring 2024. Both the February and Spring 2024 updates will also bring in new areas, bosses, NPCs, playable characters, facilities, and enemies. It will be interesting to see how the game improves in those future releases.
Penny Blood: Hellbound will come out on the Windows PC in Summer 2024. Currently, only those who backed Penny Blood have access to the closed beta, and early access will open in February 2024. The main game, Penny Blood, has a projected release window of Spring 2025.
