PCGamesN Tuesday, March 26, 2024 6:57 PM It seems like now's the time to make a fantasy building game. We've seen the long gestating Dwarf Fortress finally launch in 2022, bipedal lizards and beavers constructing villages in Against the Storm late last year, and, more recently, storybook monsters taking center stage in this month's Goblin Stone. Now, another entry to this subgenre has appeared with First Dwarf, a building game that casts players as a mech and dragon riding dwarf out to build a new home for himself in a strange wilderness growing atop giant rock islands floating in the sky. After waiting a while for more information on the game, we finally have more to go on thanks to a new gameplay overview and an impending playtest. |

Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Tuesday, March 26, 2024 1:27 PM I find myself increasingly turned off these days by simulations that boast of endless butterfly effects. I guess my misgivings can be boiled down to "a chain of dominoes is still a chain of dominoes even if it's 1000 metres in extent". Without some reason to care supplied by a narrative or broader question of theming and aesthetics, it all risks being admirable of execution but also like sheer technical maximalism - systems for the sake of systems. What do I care if I can make the 567th domino fall over by kicking the first? Still, I'm very interested to see more of City 20. In development since 2018, it's the work of Untold Games, a studio hitherto known for VR projects, location-based "immersive experiences" and ports of games such as Journey To The Savage Planet. As a piece of mechanics, it's a top-down sandbox survival experience with a highly reactive environment and procedural storytelling, influenced by the likes of Rimworld (and not, the developers insist, created using latter-day generative AI tools). As a story scenario, meanwhile, it's inspired by Cold War conspiracy theories about Soviet "secret cities" given over to uranium enrichment and nuclear experiments. The titular City 20 is one such burg, though not a direct recreation. As the game begins, a nuclear accident has led to a radiation spike and a partial evacuation: you play one of the poor suckers who didn't make the last bus out of town. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Tuesday, March 26, 2024 1:14 PM Good news for people who don't cringe violently every time they encounter the phrase "Narrative Legos"! We've finally got some more details about the extremely Bioshock-adjacent Judas, courtesy of the Ian Games Network, who spent six hours playing the game and chatting to Levine at Ghost Story Games in Boston. It's a massive interview, but very broadly, it's an FPS game that gives you guns in your right hand and "various organic powers" in your left. It's got a big focus on story and choosing your own path through character interaction, and it also has roguelike elements. "The ship is different every time you die and come back, the ship layout can be different," says Levine. Judas, it terms out, is the name of the woman you've likely already seen in the trailers, who is also your player character. The game takes place aboard the Mayflower, a spaceship the size of a city doing that thing from Hitchhiker's Guide with the hairdressers, only the Earth seems to have been in actual danger this time. You start the game being resurrected, or "reprinted". You'll then start chatting to holographic projections of the three leaders of the ship; all of which have different goals, roles, and Bioshock-ian quirks. They're at odds with each other, and you'll get to decide who to work with and against, hence "Narrative Legos" and "No two playthroughs ever…" yadayada, which is a phrase that seems almost quaint in terms of comparative obnoxiousness. |

The new Bandai Namco games Boomeroad, Nottolot, Doronko Wanko are now available on Steam for free. The games were released as part of the company's 2023 new recruits training project.
Boomeroad is an action-adventure game where players can create sliding rails to advance through levels by using a boomerang. Nottolot is an action game in which players use the hacking abilities of protagonist Rolly to control enemies and traverse through a robot production factory with the goal of escaping. Doronko Wanko is the third game and it sees players control an adorable Pomeranian with the goal of creating the biggest mess possible in their owner's house.
All three titles were developed throughout 2023 by Bandai Namco's indie developer Gyaar Studio in collaboration with publisher Phoenixx Inc, during the limited development period as part of the training for new recruits at Bandai Namco Studios. Bandai Namco expects many people to play the three new games, and hopes that the feedback from these titles will help encourage the young developers and help them in their careers.
During the previous 2022 program, the company released Goonect, Hook and Kaiju, Endrays, Excycle, and Shigeru Planet for Steam exclusively in Japan. Due to the success of last year's program, the three new titles have released worldwide. It is unknown if Bandai Namco and Phoenixx Inc plan to release the aforementioned titles outside of Japan.

Tencent Cloud announced that it is cooperating with Pocketpair, the company behind the hit game Palworld. As the game's new official partner, the company will offer its Tencent Cloud Lighthouse service to help lighten the load of multiplayer-exclusive servers.
Palworld is an open-world crafting survival game with monster-raising elements. The game has been so popular that within a few days after its release on January 19, 2024, it recorded over 5 million downloads and even surpassed Steam mainstays like Counter-Strike 2 in the platform's concurrent player count.
Pocketpair also lets players set up their own multiplayer servers. In addition to supporting up to 32 players, people can also customize the server settings to their liking. However, the game's sheer popularity also led to numerous errors near launch and a drastic increase in server upkeep costs.
The new solution Tencent Cloud offers is touted to help alleviate some of the Palworld multiplayer server issues. The Tencent Cloud Lighthouse will let players construct dedicated servers in just three seconds without any convoluted settings. The company has also set up a global infrastructure that will enhance the game's online experiences worldwide including Europe and the Americas, with a specific focus on East and Southeast Asia.
Palworld is available worldwide on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC.

Square Enix's latest entry in its Final Fantasy VII Rebirth voice actor interviews featured Suzie Yeung, the actress behind Yuffie Kisaragi, discussing that entry and the FFVII Remake INTERmission DLC. In particular, she talked about the challenges of recording the scenes when Yuffie was motion sick or singing.
Yuffie suffers from motion sickness when riding in most vehicles Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. As such, Yeung had to act out her feeling ill after experiences riding in mine carts or cars. She expressed that her performance was such that she was eventually told to tone it down. Here's her exact quote from the interview:
Yeung also expressed the difficulty that came from moments when Yuffie would sing in FFVII Rebirth, since she doesn't consider herself a singer. While she didn't recount the exact song and spot, she mentioned the effort that went into that performance as well.
This is one of multiple entries in a series of official interviews with FFVII Rebirth English voice actors. Past ones also involved talks with Cody Christian (Cloud) and Britt Baron (Tifa) about their roles and performances.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and its demo are available on the PS5, with the exclusivity arrangement ending on May 29, 2024. FFVII Remake is available for the PS4, PS5, and PC, and FFVII Ever Crisis is available on the PC and mobile devices.

Even though Jehuty has been playable since the series' first entry was released in 2001, the default coloring for this Orbital Frame model kit is based on The 2nd Runner sequel that originally came out on the PS2 in 2003. While Konami remastered both games for PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2012, it later worked with Cygames to release The 2nd Runner M∀RS as a further remaster for PS4 and PC in 2018.
Here are some sample images of the Jehuty model kit when it is completed:
The model kit has been available from as early as 2011. Kotobukiya had restocked the kit several times in prior years, but it got sold out not long after. The company announced the most recent restock in August 2023, with March 2024 as its new release window. With the new stocks available now, it managed to stay in the promised window without any delays.

The company previously confirmed restocks for Metal Gear REX, which will be available again in April 2024. Rain, Revenge, and buckets of blood: Amedama channels classic Chanbara cinema in a pixelated Edo with a stamina-based combat and a body-posession mechanic central to the gameplay. There's an intriguing story and some lovely character designs here, but it does seem to lose something when it leans away from its core strength, which is a really solid sense of ambience and tone.
You play as Yushin, an Edo-period umbrella repairman and part-time samurai recently dispossessed of his sister and his life by a gang of armed thugs. Somehow prevented from passing on, Yushin must use his newly acquired incorporeality to take over the bodies of animals, passersby, and defeated foes to hunt down the group that slew him and abducted his sibling. It is straightforward at first, but after following the storyline a short ways, the game shows its hand by revealing a Zero Escape-style branching timeline system involving exploring different paths to gather the information you need to progress. Then, when the week ends or you meet an impassable obstacle, you are whisked back to the beginning like a heavily-armed groundhog. It's a good set-up with a number of compelling mysteries and characters to meet, all awash with that lovely, rain-soaked atmosphere.
If you've played anything vaguely Souls-inspired in the past decade or so you'll find the combat easy to slip into, which is good because the tutorial tends to drop every control on you in one or two screens. There are your usual light and heavy attacks that can be alternated to make combos, as well as a dodge, block and counter system. Said counter is a powerful tool, as even if you're locked in a weaker body like a frog, it will let you take on much larger enemies without much too trouble. The combat system overall is more than functional, but the perspective and art style can make it hard to judge distances, especially vertically. So sometimes you'll whiff attacks that look like they hit or be caught by blast zones you thought you were safe from.
The most interesting mechanic is the body-hopping. As a ghost, you are able to take over the bodies of incapacitated people or animals, including enemies and bosses you've just defeated, and use their specific abilities to access certain areas or otherwise interact with the physical world. You can also use a body's distinct combat abilities to defeat more foes, but each body only has so much 'soul durability' you can use up before you're forced into engaging in yet more Grand Theft Corpus. It ended up reminding me a lot of LEGO Star Wars of all things, as you hunt for bodies with specific abilities to unlock specific areas. It is a bit odd you can't just wander into restricted zones in your ghost form, however, but it's a contrivance made to reinforce the mechanics, so I'll forgive it.
Amedama's strongest selling point is its tone, and there's a desperation to the story that pairs well with the crunchy 2D graphical style and the griminess of Edo. But it's not all perfectly aligned. Some of the anime-styled portraits sometimes feel a little too clean or cute to fully fit in, especially later when big cartoony Oni and scantily clad kunoichi add a more fantastical tone to what previously felt a bit more grounded, ghostly possession notwithstanding. Similarly, there's something of a disconnect between the grim, Chanbara-style blood spurts and the otherwise cartoony way people actually die unless it's of story consequence. I spent a good while wondering if the people and animals I was possessing we're actually dying because of my actions, as despite collapsing into pools of blood, they would often seem right as rain (pun intended) once I left them alone a bit, even before time started looping.
That's not to say you can't marry those serious and cartoony aesthetics, just that it doesn't quite land in Amedama. While playing, I commonly compared the game to last year's Fate/Samurai Remnant, but while both concern shadowy conspiracies within a dangerous and corrupt depiction of Edo, the blending in of Anime-esque melodrama feels more natural in Samurai Remnant. I'm not totally sure how exactly it achieves that, but I'd wager maybe because Amedama has such a strongly specific atmosphere in the beginning that it's more noticeable when it deviates.
I can't help but imagine a different version of the game that sticks to that grim tone, where the people you kill stay dead until time loops round again. It would add a bit of weight to each body you possess, as using the strongest character you have access to early might mean you can't use them again later in the run. Not to mention the thematic potential of using people as resources in a quest for revenge. The game is only in early access at the moment, mind, but I don't expect anything so drastic to occur when the game feels otherwise quite complete.
But despite my misgivings, Amedama is still a solid and enjoyable slice of feudal intrigue and samurai action. A crunchy artstyle and smooth animations complement the tone, and while the simple combat was sometimes frustrating, it wasn't enough to distract me from the game's strengths. I'm not sure what else is planned to be added during the game's early access period, but if you're hungry for more samurai action after other recent releases, this is defintely one to keep an eye on.
Amedama is immediately available in Steam Early Access, with a demo also available.

The music video for the Kingdom Hearts song "Hikari" by Hikaru Utada is now available on YouTube in 4K resolution. Utada is celebrating the release of their new greatest hits album Science Fiction on April 10, 2024, which includes the song.
"Hikari" originally released on March 20, 2002, and it was the third single for the artist's "Deep River" fourth studio album. "Hikari" was featured as the first promotional theme song Hikaru Utada performed for Square Enix's action-RPG series Kingdom Hearts. Utada also composed an English version titled "Simple and Clean."
Mirroring the English title for the track, the music video depicts artist Hikaru Utada doing the dishes in a small apartment kitchen. This is in contrast to the animated opening cinematic for Kingdom Hearts, which features a remix version of both the Japanese and English versions titled "Hikari (PlanitB Remix)" and "Simple and Clean (PlanitB Remix)," respectively.
You can check out the 4K music video for "Hikari" by Hikaru Utada here:

Meiji will release wireless earbuds that look like the Kinoko no Yama (Chocorooms) snacks from March 26, 2024. They'll cost 29,800 JPY ($196.90). [Thanks, Game Watch!]
The earbuds will come in a little container that resembles the packaging for Kinoko no Yama. As for its specs as earbuds, they are Bluetooth-compatible, which you can use to listen to music or watch videos with your phone. Not only that, but it is also capable of offering real-time translations. The Kinoko no Yama earbuds' translation feature supports 70 different Japanese accents and dialects, as well as 74 different languages. Meiji and Makuake will only release 3500 units of the Kinoko no Yama earbuds.
Here's the trailer on social media showing them off:
Kinoko no Yama, or Chocorooms, are snacks that Meiji Seika first started selling in 1975. They look like mushrooms, with the stem being a biscuit cookie. Aside from their popularity as legitimate snacks, they're also a major part of Japanese culture. There is a famous civil debate within Japan as to whether Kinoko no Yama or Takenoko no Sato is the superior snack. Meiji produced both of them, and this war started as a marketing campaign. Takenoko no Sato is a chocolate-covered cookie snack that resembles a pinecone. Which one you prefer is up to your personal taste. But if you wear the earbuds might make you seem like a Kinoko no Yama stan.
The Kinoko no Yama (Chocorooms) earbuds will be available from March 26, 2024.

On March 28, 2024, Diablo 4 will be part of Xbox Game Pass for the Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC, and Microsoft explained how a PC player can install it at launch. As this involves also installing Battle.net and account linking, it involves a few steps.
There are a few things you will need for this process, and getting some of them ahead March 28, 2024 may help speed things along. Installing Battle.net on your PC ahead of time will help save some time, as will making an account there. You also will need the Xbox App for Windows PC, if you don't have that already.
Having both ready, as well as an account with Activision Blizzard's service, means that when Diablo 4 goes live on Xbox Game Pass, the installation process will go more smoothly. You'll just log into the Xbox App, choose to install the game from there, which will then take you to Battle.net and your account connected to your Microsoft one to go through with the PC download.
Microsoft also released a graphic that went through all four steps in the process, to make things easier for players.
Diablo 4 is available for the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC. It will be on Xbox Game Pass for the Xbox consoles and Windows PC starting on March 28, 2024.

Keychains featuring the Jack Frost family of monsters from Atlus' Shin Megami Tensei and Persona series will appear soon in Japan. Bandai revealed that it is gradually adding the keychains to its Gashapon vending machines across Japan. The lineup has a release window in the fourth week of March 2024, which is exactly the same week the company published the press release.
The Gashapon machines will require 300 yen before people can pull a random toy capsule. This merchandise collection will have a total of eight varieties. The Jack Frost, Black Frost, and King Frost keychains will be available with either a ball chain or a trigger clasp. Jack Frost will also have a second version where it raises its right hand. Each mascot will also have another hook on its belly, and the owner will be able to tie other keychains with that.
Although the Jack Frost family of monsters originally appeared in the Shin Megami Tensei series, Atlus included them in its derivative entries like Persona and Soul Hackers. Atlus has also been working with other companies to produce Jack Frost merchandise, which range from slippers by Animo in 2021 to figurines by Square Enix in 2022.
The pinchable and connectable mascot keychains featuring Jack Frost from the Shin Megami Tensei series will soon be available on Gashapon vending machines across Japan.

PC Invasion - FeedDDD Tuesday, March 26, 2024 4:55 PM Honkai Star Rail Version 2.1 "Into the Yawning Chasm" has a ton of content to look forward to, but as is the case with most gacha updates, the new 5-Star characters are what really matter. Acheron and Aventurine make their debut in this Honkai Star Rail update, but which one of them is better? Because Stellar Jades are so expensive, it takes a long time to build pity, and the 50/50 system constantly looms over you, there's no guarantee that you'll get even one of these characters, let alone both. PC Invasion - FeedDDD Tuesday, March 26, 2024 4:22 PM Romance is a tricky topic in this fantasy RPG, as we know for sure that it exists but there are very specific ways to go about it. Although you can romance one NPC, are you allowed to romance multiple NPCs in Dragon's Dogma 2? Dragon's Dogma 2: Can you romance multiple NPCs?
