'Impossible' Doom speedrun record finally beaten after 26 years

Doom speedruns resemble a kind of virtual extreme sports, seemingly impossible feats of gaming dexterity that require snap reflexes, in-depth coding and programming knowledge, and limitless patience. The defining 1993 FPS game from id Software, over its 30-year-plus lifespan, Doom has been a showcase for some of the greatest videogaming achievements in history. Speedruns, however, are telescopic - the longer a game exists, the more optimized it becomes, and the less often new records are set. The oldest Doom record in the world, dating back 26 years, seemed impossible to defeat. Nevertheless, more than a quarter of a century later, one intrepid player has set a new, all-time best.

     Best gaming laptop 2024

The best gaming laptops give desktops a run for their money, with the added conveniences of better portability and a built-in display. However, for all the similarities these clamshell computers share with the best gaming PCs, they have many unique qualities you need to consider before buying. Whether you want a desktop replacement or a mighty micro machine, we're here to help you find the right model.

The latest laptops pack Nvidia GeForce RTX 40 or AMD Radeon RX 7000 series graphics, alongside AMD Ryzen 7000 and 13th Gen Intel Core processors, which will run the best PC games smoothly. Higher-spec models will typically run hot and loud under full load, as the components inside them pull the most power and require more active cooling.

Battery life is important when buying a gaming laptop, but you'll get the most performance out of one by plugging it in. This is true at every price point, from the best budget laptops to the most expensive. Generally, the most critical specs will be your GPU and CPU, as most models feature upgradeable RAM and SSD storage.

Other factors like a laptop's screen also greatly impact the experience of using it, with the resolution, refresh rate, and panel type all affecting usability. Some even feature dual-mode displays, as seen in our Razer Blade 16 (2023) review. We're constantly testing the latest gaming laptops so that you can buy the best one for your budget and needs.

After 20 years, forgotten, classic Metroidvania is finally coming back

What's the first game that jumps into your head when you hear the word 'classic'? If you go back to the PC heyday of the early and mid '90s, Civilization, SimCity, Fallout, Doom, and Myst might be some of the names that come to mind. Over the last decade or so, Skyrim, Cyberpunk 2077, and Baldur's Gate 3 have become some of the biggest contemporary hits. The legacies of some games last forever. Others are lost to time. And then there's a middle-ground third category, games you perhaps haven't thought about in many, many years, but should they resurface, spark a sudden wave of nostalgia. Originally launched all the way back in 1982, and followed by an underplayed sequel in 2005, one erstwhile classic is making a comeback, in a new Metroidvania game you can play soon.

Genshin Impact tier list April 2024: the best characters in 4.5

Looking for a Genshin Impact tier list? There are currently 82 Genshin Impact characters available, providing you with a wide variety of candidates to construct your dream team. But with so many weapons, elementals, talents, ascension bonuses, and constellation upgrades, finding your favorites can be challenging.

Don't let the placement of the characters on our Genshin Impact tier list deter you from pulling on the next character banner. While base stats and elemental abilities are important, the value of a character also depends on personal playstyle, available weapons and artifacts, and team composition. It doesn't matter if your favorite Genshin Impact character is on one of the lower tiers; you can still make it work with our recommended Genshin Impact builds. Being on a lower tier in the free PC game means that there are better alternatives, or the character needs a very specific build or team to shine. We've spent hundreds of hours trying different variations of teams in Spiral Abyss to establish who the best characters are in Genshin Impact.

The surreal pop synth of Sayonara Wild Hearts may have been the game that put Swedish developer Simogo on the map for PC players, but for me their earlier iOS puzzler Device 6 stands in my memory as being one of the most distinctive video games I've played. An interactive mystery novel at its heart, Device 6 took full advantage of its mobile-based hardware, asking players to turn and rotate their device to read certain lines of text, and scroll through its chapters searching for audio visual clues to solve its puzzles. I've often lamented that it never made its way to other platforms, even though part of its magic is inherently tied to physicality of its tactile origins.

Happily, after playing a few hours of Simogo's latest game, Lorelei And The Laser Eyes it's clear this equally classy detective story shares much of the same DNA as Device 6. It has the same love of riddles and mysterious, cryptic puzzles, only now they're writ large in a fully explorable 3D setting - a monochrome and maze-like hotel belonging to a reclusive artist. But Simogo's love of text hasn't been diminished in the process. Early on you find an instruction manual for Lorelei And The Laser Eyes within the game itself, which straight away tells you to have a pen and paper nearby to help solve its numerous conundrums. Heck, publishers Annapurna Interactive even sent me a full-blown notebook in the post just to hammer it home. They're not kidding, either. Even the opening section of the game had me scribbling down names, sums and symbols, much like Tunic, Return Of The Obra Dinn and Outer Wilds did before it. Which is just as well, really, as I'll definitely be needing some reminders when I come to play the full version on May 16th.

I briefly posted about this in The Maw, but was unsure at that point if SteamWorld Heist 2 was coming to PC day and date with the launch on Switch. That date is August 8th, by the way, and the answer is: yes it is! Though it was revealed at Nintendo's Indie World Showcase earlier this afternoon, strategy action-adventure-with-robots sequel SteamWorld Heist 2 isn't a timed platform exclusive, so that's fun!

SteamWorld Heist 2 is, if you hadn't guessed, a sequel to SteamWorld Heist, which came to PC in 2016. The first was a side-on tactics game where you, leading a team of robots, shot teams of other (bad) robots in turn-based skill-heavy tactical battles. While that all took place in space, the sequel has achieved splashdown, and you'll be chuntering about the seas with a new lead character (Captain Leeway) and a new bunch of crewmates. It's a robot pirate game, in other words.

Crunchyroll Mascot Vtuber Crunchyroll-Hime Returning

After an extended absence, Crunchyroll-Hime, the Vtuber based on the Crunchyroll mascot, announced she'll begin streaming again in a new video. She also noted that her streams will now be on the company's official channels, such as its YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram

The performer began the video by announcing that she wanted to try releasing different kinds of content. This is why she won't have a dedicated channel. She hinted at secret projects on the way. She referenced one of them as being the Ado interview she conducted on the main Crunchyroll channel in March 2024. She also referenced anime watch alongs and such.

As a reminder, some of the last Crunchyroll-Hime streams on her main channel appeared all the way back in December 2024. The last one involved the Crunchyroll Vtuber making Christmas cards. However, quite a few of them also involved the performer playing some popular games at the time, like Exit 8, We Were Here Too, Lethal Company, and Parasocial.

In addition to there being a Vtuber of the mascot, Crunchyroll also sells merchandise of her. There are items with her likeness on them. You can also even get a Nendoroid of Hime with her pet Yuzu. That's only available at the official storefront.

There Are Still No Eiyuden Chronicle DLC Release Windows

As part of the Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes AMA on the Nintendo Switch subreddit, a number of questions about the DLC release windows came up. However, each time the combined response from Art Director and Producer Junichi Murakami, Director and System Designer Osamu Komuta, and the Character Designer and Studio Head Junko Kawano noted there is no schedule for them yet.

One of the first responses to someone's question about the Eiyuden Chronicle DLC was, "Release dates for all DLC are still to be determined. Please look forward to it." This was confirmed in a second response. However, that follow up suggested that the add-ons starring Marisa and Seign "will be a story of the "At that time, on the other hand" when the story has progressed to a certain extent, so the timing will be a little later than the release of the game itself."

As a reminder, a number of pieces of Eiyuden Chronicle DLC were stretch goals that were hit, like Another Story: Marisa, Another Story: Seign, the Fortress Asset Pack, and a back story novel. There was also a fan vote held on DLC 3, with five possible candidates. The one that won that poll was Elden Magicks, a scenario starring the supporting characters Markus, Milana, and Quinn. There was almost a sixth one involving generals from the game too.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes will come to the Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC via Epic Games Store, GOG, and Steam on April 23, 2024.

FFXVI Patch Notes Go Over DLC Update, New Content

Square Enix announced it released the 1.31 update for FFXVI, with the patch notes confirming there is new content for everyone in addition to The Rising Tide DLC support. People can now set skill sets, customize inputs, and do more in photo mode.

Some of the new additions listed in the FFXVI patch notes are a quality of life feature or update. Eiyuden Chronicle Developers Discussed Sequel Possibilities in AMA

An Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes AMA with members of Rabbit and Bear Studios appeared on the Nintendo Switch subreddit, and the team discussed the possibility of a sequel to both the original game and perhaps an Eiyuden Chronicle Rising 2. The Art Director and Producer Junichi Murakami, Director and System Designer Osamu Komuta, and the Character Designer and Studio Head Junko Kawano all collaborated and offered responses to people's questions.

For many of the responses to the AMA, the exact person responding wasn't mentioned. In response to one question about an Eiyuden Chronicle sequel, the team said, "We would like to expand on the story we have created this time in the Allraan continent. We cannot yet tell you how we will do this, but please stay tuned."

That sentiment came up again later in the forum. An undisclosed member of the team noted, "Of course we have; R&B is sharing the vision for what comes after this each other. We hope you will wait and see how we can expand on this."

As for the possibility of an Eiyuden Chronicle Rising 2, it seemed a sequel is something the team would only get into if there was demand. That is the prequel to the main game, which stars a few of its supporting cast members. When that question came up, the response from the members responding was, "I also see potential in Rising and would like to consider it if there are many requests for it."

Eiyuden Chronicle Rising is available now on the Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC. Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes will come to the Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC via Epic Games Store, GOG, and Steam on April 23, 2024.

Review- Rose & Camellia Collection Earnestly Approaches a Silly Premise 1

Years and years ago, when you could still play Flash games on the internet, the Rose & Camellia series ended up becoming an icon. Nigoro turned Victorian-era slapping into a very serious and dramatic sport. Now, with help from WayForward and Limited Run Games, this series is further saved from extinction via the Rose & Camellia Collection for the Switch. It's exactly what a fan might want, though the control options might not always be ideal.

Rose & Camellia Collection features five games. The four Rose & Camellia collections are power struggles among women within or tied to the Tsubakikoji family. Players' protagonists attempt to prove themselves by taking down the other members. So Reiko is fighting to become the matriarch in the first game. Saori, her sister in law, strikes back in the sequel and attempts to dethrone Reiko. Rose & Camellia vs. La-Mulana features Mulbruk slapping other female characters from the series to become the heroine. Note that the Rose & Camellia vs The House in Fata Morgana isn't present here, though.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TGrKUi11ZHg&ab_channel=WayForward

Basically, Rose & Camellia Collection is a compilation of boxing-style, gimmick games that actually had a lot of care and effort put into them. In each entry, your avatar will be pitted against an opponent. Your viewpoint is from behind them, with an over-the-shoulder look at the person in desperate need of a good slap. Each character has a certain number of health points, indicated by flowers. Attacks whittle them down, though there are also on-screen visual indicators of how well your enemy is doing. (They also have tells that let you know if they are about to actually hit you.) You take turns slapping each other, until one person's health runs out.

So, as for those controls. Basically, the input options pay tribute to the fact that the original Flash game involved swiping with your mouse across the screen to slap or dodge. So, you have two options here. If your system isn't docked or you are going through one of the campaigns, it defaults to the touch screen controls. You either swipe left or right in order to slap an opponent or dodge an attack. If you are docked or choose versus, I've found it defaults to motion controls. In that case, you hold the A button and flick your wrist to slap or hold the L or R trigger and flick to dodge.

The issue is, the five games eventually end up demanding perfection. You only start with Rose & Camellia, the versus mode with characters like Reiko and Saori available, and Rose & Camellia vs La-Mulana if you tick the box in options. Gaining access to more games and characters means you actually need to slap everybody and live to tell the tale. Foes that appear later in campaigns are more difficult! If you aren't precise and exactly dodging or hitting them, you'll lose! Which means you don't unlock more characters and games!

So honestly, I feel like the lack of a more conventional control scheme as a third option does Rose & Camellia Collection a disservice on the Switch. Especially since there isn't also a calibration options in the settings so you can better adjust inputs to ensure improved accuracy. It left me concerned that some people might not take a chance on it or make the most of the games. I do appreciate the "equal HP" option in the settings, however. Also, though it doesn't tell you it is saving, once you unlock an opponent in one of the campaigns, you can then resume that story from that fight.

Especially since this is such a gorgeous package. Nigoro really did a lovely job with the Rose & Camellia games originally, and this new edition with WayForward's assistance really helps. The voice acting is great. The translations for all of the games, including the new-to-the-west Rose & Camellia 3 and 4, are so well done and often hilarious. The details for character designs, especially as you get further into the fights, are great. The music is lovely. It's a complete package.

Rose & Camellia Collection is one of those collections of gimmick games that are way better than they have any right to be. There are some downsides to it, such as only offering touch or motion control scheme options and locking games behind the completion of other titles. It is incredibly silly though, and quite a fun title to play alone or with friends.

Rose & Camellia Collection is available on the Nintendo Switch.

Cat Quest Vs Skull And BonesCat Quest III has been shown at both the Triple-i Initiative and Nintendo's Indie World, and both times I saw it, I couldn't help but think that it's looking to be a greater pirate game than Skull and Bones could ever wish to be. Cat Quest III may not be gritty, but it's at least a pirate game In my review of Skull and Bones, my main frustration was that Skull and Bones is less of a "gritty pirate game," as promised, but a looter shooter on the high seas. This may be fun for players in its own right, but it cannot really be described as a pirate game. There may be ships, sea battles, and treasure maps, but the constant arcadey gameplay and shallow missions robs Skull and Bones of feeling like a pirate game. Cat Quest III, however, may incorporate cute cats and dastardly rats, but it's looking to feel like a hell of a pirate game.
