Best farming games on PC 2024

What are the best farming games on PC? There's something about the repetitive nature of tilling and planting a field. Witnessing the slow payoff of your crops growing makes you feel in tune with nature - even if you are still sitting in front of your computer screen. The best farming games on PC can vary a lot in genre and gameplay, but all eventually come down to getting your hands dirty.

Some of the best PC games that include farming are meant to be experienced alone and focus on the relationships between your protagonist and a cast of local characters. Others, like multiplayer games Staxel and Farm Together, are all about building something with friends and the fun of creating something together that's more than a prewritten story, so the genre is still full of variation. Whether they're cute and casual town games like Stardew Valley or more realistic business ventures like the Farming Simulator series, we've found a mix of the best farming games that should hit every quadrant of the agricultural games graph.

After 12 months, one of the best zombie games ever is finally on Steam

Ever wondered why we like killing zombies so much? It's because they exist in the center of a sweet spot, between recognizably human and monstrous and different enough that there are no moral ramifications. Shooting robots and demons is fine, but they're perhaps a little too abstract for us to understand the impact, the damage, of every hit. Games where you're killing people, it might be enjoyable, but a little voice remains at the back of your head, telling you to feel guilty. Zombies solve this problem. One of the best undead-slaying games of the last decade, alongside hits like Resident Evil, a true genre classic has finally shambled onto Steam, and it takes the thrill of the kill to stratospheric new levels.

I've always been an outlier in the World of Warcraft community. I maintain that Sylvanas Windrunner is, actually, a really awesome character, and that Zandalar is one of the most beautiful zones ever made. My opinions cause fights and get me kicked out of raids, and at this point, I'm very okay with it. So, as I'm sure you've likely guessed, I was one of the seemingly few players that enjoyed Plunderstorm, WoW's bizarre pirate-themed battle royale mode. Until I played Tales Of Kenzera: Zau I figured people had run out of ways to make original platformers, but an Afrofuturist story-in-a-story framing for a mythological platformer about healthy ways to deal with grief sure did teach me to not underestimate human creativity. I really liked a lot about Tales Of Kenzera, and got annoyed by a bunch of stuff too - and the division seems to be that a lot of the former falls on the story and design side, and the latter on the mechanical side, which I guess isn't ideal for a platformer. But still, I think it's worth persevering.

Famed mass-layoff-manufacturing corporation Embracer Group are dividing into three companies, which will be listed separately on Sweden's stock exchange. Rising Up is a free, sub-fifteen minute browser game that's a bit like Streets of Rage, where you play a balding office worker and beat a giant scanner to death within the first 30 seconds. This, I believe, should be enough to tempt you into dunking it enthusiastically into your next break coffee, but if you need more convincing, let's do it.

Created by E.H Jørgensen, whose credits include Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak, Rising Up is a relatively simple 3 button side scroller that has you make your way up an office building, destroying everything in your path. First, irate co-workers wield swivel chairs. Then, security join the fray. Then some sort of G-men get involved. You can punch, block, jump, and air-kick. The brawling is simple but satisfying enough, and the way office equipment violently degrades when hit is better, but this isn't why I'm recommending the game.

I'm currently trying to find a new flat in London. This is not much fun, though it's a great opportunity to meet and bond with other would-be tenants over a shared, grinding resentment of landlords who will literally stuff a bed in a toilet and call it a "studio apartment". It's also left me powerfully invested in the premise of Blue Prince, a first-person puzzler which looks like a graphic novel and starts with your character inheriting a huge, weird, isolated mansion, Mt. Holly, from an eccentric great-uncle.

Lucky you! There's a catch, though: according to your great-uncle's will, you only get to keep the place if you can find its 46th room. The catch hanging off that catch is that going by its flatplan, the mansion only has 45 rooms. And the catch hanging off that catch is that the mansion changes shape between visits. Every time you open one of its many doors, you must choose from three cards to decide which room is on the other side. To find the elusive 46th room, you must "draft" rooms in certain combinations to unfold the mystery of the place and wiggle your way to its heart.

Stellar Blade Is an Uncensored Game

Shift Up announced on social media that Stellar Blade is an uncensored game. This news comes alongside new videos highlighting Stellar Blade gameplay of Eve using Beta and Burst Skills.

Here's the official reveal. It noted that there will be no changes. This means all Stellar Blade content is uncensored and identical in every region. People may have wondered if this would be the case, given both in the game and demo there is a Skin Suit option that is a flesh-colored Nano Suit that removes Eve's shields and makes her look as though she is naked.

https://twitter.com/StellarBlade/status/1781976139688534449

As for the Stellar Blade gameplay videos, the Beta Skills one showed up first. While it didn't offer names for any of the attacks she performed, it did show her using them to take down an array of monsters.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t8pTFu6sD1E&ab_channel=PlayStation

The Stellar Blade Burst Skills video only just debuted on April 21, 2024. Again, named for her attacks didn't come up. However, we saw how these heavier-hitting abilities can decimate opponents. There are also moments when time slows so you can better see Eve performing them.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CKqhmbexDzE&ab_channel=PlayStation

Stellar Blade will come to the PS5 on April 26, 2024. A demo is available.

Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link New iOS Beta Test Coming

Square Enix announced that a new Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link closed beta test for iOS devices will appear worldwide in early May 2024. People can apply now for the Closed Beta Test until April 26, 2024.

The company will communicate the result of the application process on May 1, 2024, and those picked will be able to play the closed beta test between May 2-10, 2024. This time around, about 2,500 people will be chosen for the test. The recommended system requirements for the beta test are iOS 15.0 version or higher, an iPhone XS or more modern model, and at least 5GB of free space.

The first iOS closed beta test for Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link ran between November 29 and December 8, 2023. 4.7 Genshin Impact Characters Include Playable Melusine Sigewinne

HoYoVerse's drip marketing teased the 4.7 Genshin Impact characters, and they include Clorinde, Sethos, and the playable Melusine Sigewinne. There's no exact release date for their debuts yet, but we get to see art and details about their visions.

Clorinde is a character who we've seen in the Genshin Impact Fontaine storyline since it kicked off in 4.0. She's known as the Champion Duelist, and her Constellation is Rapperia. She is going to be an Electro character. While her weapon type isn't confirmed, her appearances so far showed her with a sword and gun.

Here's her official art and short description from social media:

https://twitter.com/GenshinImpact/status/1782348677442376144

While Sethos isn't in Genshin Impact yet, we do know he'll appear in the latest Cyno character quest chapter in version 4.6. He's a Desert Envoy with an Electro vision like Cyno. His Constellation is called Basileos Delta. His weapon type wasn't mentioned, but he's shown wielding a bow in the official art.

Here's his official art and short description:

https://twitter.com/GenshinImpact/status/1782351274735767933

As for Sigewinne, she is a Melusine like many of the NPCs we have seen in Genshin Impact since coming to Fontaine, only playable. She's known as the Fortress of Meropide Head Nurse, and her Constellation is Nereides. Her art shows her wielding a gun of sorts. She has a Hydro vision and, given she is a nurse working in a clinic, she appears to be the latest healer for the game.

Here's her brief story introducing her.

https://twitter.com/GenshinImpact/status/1782349997637333107

The next new character we'll see in Genshin Impact is Arlecchino. She debuts when 4.6 starts on April 24, 2024. Lyney, Wanderer, and Baizhu will also return in this next version.

Genshin Impact is available for the PS4, PS5, PC, and mobile devices, and Clorinde, Sethos, and the Melusine Sigewinne will be playable in 4.7.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica Magia Exedra

Aniplex announced that it will release a new Madoka Magica mobile app game in Japan in 2024. The new game will be known by its full title, Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Magia Exedra.

Aniplex has also revealed the companies that are working on this title. Aniplex itself is handling the project planning, and it will also be the company that releases the game on the app stores. Pokelabo and f4samurai will work together to develop the game. However, Pokelabo will take a more central role as it will produce the game with 3D graphics. The same studio will also regularly manage the mobile game after it is released.

Pokelabo is most famous for working on Square Enix and Yoko Taro's mobile game SINoALICE, which had already ceased existing in Japan in mid-January 2024. However, Magia Exedra will not be the only active mobile game the company has in 2024. Pokelabo is also known for developing Assault Lily: Last Bullet, and it is working with So-net to release Assault Lily: Last Bullet W internationally on iOS and Android.

Meanwhile, f4samurai is also still busy handling Magia Record. While the earlier Madoka Magica mobile game has been no longer available in English since 2020, it is still actively ongoing in Japan as of April 2024.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Magia Exedra will be available for mobile devices in Japan in 2024.

Tales of Kenzera Masks

The origins of Tales of Kenzera: Zau are unusual. It's developed by a new studio called Surgent Studios, which was founded specifically to make this game not by a game designer, but by a voice actor.

Abubakar Salim is perhaps best known as the voice of Bayek, the protagonist of Assassin's Creed: Origins. Following the death of his father, Salim sought out a way to deal with his grief through fiction. Thanks to childhood memories of playing Genesis games with his father, video games became the medium in which he chose to tell his story. Surgent was born, and with it came Tales of Kenzera: Zau.

This backstory is important to understanding what Tales of Kenzera: Zau is all about. Much like the real-life inspiration, the game focuses on someone dealing with the loss of his father. Zau, a shaman within the fictional land of Kenzera, is devastated by the recent passing of his Baba. Out of desperation, he calls upon Kalunga, the god of death, to bring his father back. Kalunga issues a challenge to Zau: seek the three spirits of the land and solve the associated trials, and he will grant his request.

Screenshot by Siliconera

Each of the game's acts focuses on the quest to find one of these spirits, and along the way the spirit's story echoes Zau's own struggles. They each exist to impart a little wisdom on how to deal with the tough emotions that come with losing a loved one. It feels a lot like a series of fables, each designed to pass on a lesson. The setting adds to this feeling, inspired by folk tales from Salim's Kenyan heritage, told to him as a child by his father.

From the description of the story, you'd be forgiven for thinking this was a pure visual novel or adventure game, focused mostly on story. Instead, Tales of Kenzera: Zau is a Metroidvania, inspired heavily by Ori and the Blind Forest. This influence is heavily present, with fast movement and abilities that gradually culminate in Zau being able to traverse the world as if the floor was made of lava. Which, to be fair, in some parts of the game, it is. There are even large-scale chase sequences, clearly inspired by similar sequences in Ori and the Will of the Wisps.

Screenshot by Siliconera

Moving around Kenzera is a joy. You get a double jump and a dash right out the gate, along with two modes of combat, based on which shaman mask Zau is wearing. Wearing the Mask of the Moon gives Zau a projectile attack and a quick melee move that can be enhanced to bounce projectiles back to enemies. The Mask of the Sun is a pure melee build, where Zau has a short combo of light attacks or a juggling heavy attack. You can switch masks with the press of a single button, and every part of combat feels fluid and responsive. It's so fun that it did disappoint me there was no style meter like in Devil May Cry, because it absolutely feels like it could use one.

Platforming is also a blast, with each area built as a series of parkour obstacle courses. You'll hop off walls, air dash over dangers and slide under low-hanging door frames. Each new ability you get adds to this, with a grappling hook, a directional dash, a glide and a way to turn waterfalls into new walls to jump off. Most of the game involves you dashing through platforming challenges that feature a natural flow that's incredibly satisfying to pull off.

Screenshot by Siliconera

There are issues with how all this comes together, however. Some combat challenges, particularly late in the game, rely too heavily on bombarding you with enemies that require specific strategies to defeat. Trying to concentrate on one tactic for one enemy often leaves you open to attacks from another, which does occasionally get tiresome.

Progression is also a little too linear. Metroidvanias typically have a sweet spot between linearity and open-endedness. While I've recently criticised Biomorph for being too open, Tales of Kenzera swings too much in the opposite direction. You are often on a fixed path for most of the game, with many of the typical genre concessions focused on one or two extra collectibles within a given area. While it was not generally an issue because of how much fun the game is to play, it did remove a lot of the fun of exploration. Mostly because it barely existed.

There are also occasional moments when controls aren't quite as fluid as they could be. While most games will allow you to hold a direction as a cutscene is coming to an end, allowing you to get moving immediately, Tales of Kenzera does not, leaving multiple moments where Zau simply didn't move. The automatic ledge grab can also sometimes get in the way while navigating tight spaces, particularly when breaking through walls in later parts of the game. Whether this was a quirk of the review copy that will be fixed for the final release remains to be seen.

Screenshot by Siliconera

However, these flaws end up being forgivable for how deeply personal this game feels. There's a moment at one of the game's various meditation spots where Zau reflects on the last night of his father's life. Unsurprisingly, Abubakar Salim voices Zau himself, and in this moment, it feels like he is recounting his own father's final moments. The performance is powerfully raw and intimate, like he's confiding in us during a quiet moment. Salim built an entire studio to make this game, all to deal with the grief of losing his father. While the game may have some flaws, moments like this show the passion behind the whole project. This game is not only a success for its creator to deal with his own emotions, but to hopefully help anyone else dealing with similar circumstances see themselves in Zau's struggles.

Tales of Kenzera: Zau is a beautiful little game. Fun platforming and a setting we rarely see in games both support a genuinely moving story of grief. While it is a game about the acceptance of death, it's also about the joys of life. And just like life, it's a little rough around the edges and can be frustrating, but ultimately worth it.

Tales of Kenzera: Zau will release on the PC, PS5, Xbox Series X, and Switch on April 23, 2024.

2.2 Honkai: Star Rail Special Program Features Robin

HoYoVerse announced the 2.2 Honkai: Star Rail Special Program will appear at 4:30am PT/7:30am ET on April 26, 2024, and the image is already teasing Robin. As usual, people can watch on YouTube and see which characters and events will show up when the new version of the game releases.

The image for the Honkai: Star Rail showcase shows Robin, for one. This makes sense, as back in March 2024 the company confirmed she would be a playable character in the game. Boothill is not present, though we know he will be added to the game as part of this update as well. The other hosts include Black Swan, who debuted alongside the 2.0 update, and Aventurine, who launched in 2.1. The final person is Owlbert, the IPC spokesperson and general host for these sorts of videos and events.

Here's the placeholder for the Honkai: Star Rail Special Program 2.2 showcase:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dwxXv9y62lQ&ab_channel=Honkai%3AStarRail

While there's no confirmed date for the 2.2 release yet, odds are we'll see it on May 8, 2024. This is because the Aventurine and Jingliu banners both end on May 7, 2024. It is unknown if the Robin or Boothill banner will be the first to appear.

Honkai: Star Rail is available for the PS5, PC, and mobile devices, and the Special Program for 2.2 airs at 4:30am PT/7:30am ET on April 26, 2024.
