PCGamesN Sunday, June 16, 2024 10:31 AM Balatro isn't just a standout deckbuilding roguelike, it's easily going to be one of the best games of 2024. It takes the rules of poker and completely twists them into something hypnotic, seeing you wake from an hours-long stupor where you've been lost to the will of the cards. Dungeons and Degenerate Gamblers does the same for blackjack, as it takes the card game's simple rules and turns them up to overdrive. PCGamesN Sunday, June 16, 2024 9:22 AM Spawns might be too difficult in Helldivers 2 right now. Multiple players are calling on Arrowhead to nerf the current spawn rates across the game, saying that with the most recent patch there hasn't really been a fix to how many enemies we're facing. I've been having a similar problem for a few weeks now, and Arrowhead is now aware of apparent spawn issues, even if the team is unsure how bad it actually is. June 2024 Nintendo Direct aside, the Summer Game Fest 2024 season is done and all the game announcements appeared. A lot came up! Console exclusives showed up. Updates ensured for long-awaited titles. So today, let's go over all of the reveals we liked best.
I think UFO 50 was the best Summer Game Fest 2024 announcement. I've been waiting so, so many years for this game. I love the idea of the collection. The official trailer during Day of the Devs 2024 was fantastic. It is exactly what I want, and the variety of initial games showcased there is amazing. I can't wait. — Jenni
I'm a simple man, I see Chamber Valorant and I hoot and holler. So naturally, it's the Valorant console announcement, even if I'll probably stick to playing on PC. — Kazuma
For me, it is Claire Obscur: Expedition 33. Aside from the pretty lackluster name, the game itself surprised me the most. Its timing-centric turn-based gameplay looks thrilling and fast-paced. But the real standout is the incredible music, which sounded like the composer from NieR: Automata, Keiichi Okabe, partnered up with the FFXIV: Shadowbringers theme song vocalist, Jason Charles Miller. — Cody
Going to let my Pokemon bias show here, and say the Palworld Sakurajima expansion. While it had many flaws at launch, Palworld is seriously one of the most fun "monster collecting" games I've played in years. The fact that its "fun factor" still shined through despite its clunky engine, is proof the game is on to "something."
The trailer we got for Sakurajima actually looked beautiful, and has me excited to see how Pocketpair further improves the game in future updates. If nothing else, it gives us starving Pokemon fans something to play while we suffer through 2024 without any game being released (TCG Pocket doesn't count).
Also wanted to give a quick shout out to Alan Wake 2: Night Springs DLC. If you haven't checked it out yet, Remedy created a masterpiece and it's never too late to jump in! — Brent

A new trailer for an upcoming Sanrio collaboration in Arknights is available to watch on YouTube. In the trailer, we can see the three skins that'll be available for U-Official, Goldenglow, and Lee. [Thanks, KyoStinV!]
The U-Official outfit has her holding a Kuromi bag, as well as balloons depicting various popular Sanrio mascots. Her outfit is "Stream Above the Clouds." Goldenglow's "Party in the Garden" outfit has her wearing a red-and-white dress with pink accessories. She's posing with Hello Kitty in a garden, with a sign bearing Hello Kitty's signature ribbon on the gazebo behind her. Finally, Lee's outfit is "Remedy in a Cup of Leung Cha," and sees him posing with Pompompurin. Pompompurin is helping him with his tea store.
There will also be various icon kits you can buy and if the official trailer reaches a certain number of views, all players will get collaboration furniture to use in their game. The icons show chibi versions of characters posing with Sanrio icons. As for the furniture, there is a chair that looks like a My Melody macaron. There's also a Cinnamoroll doughnut cushion.
The Sanrio collaboration will run in Arknights from June 20 to July 4, 2024. During this time, there will also be re-runs of certain outfits. Characters that'll get re-run outfits include Flametail, Kirara, and Czerny.
Arknights is readily available on mobile devices. The last Arknights campaign with KFC recently ended on June 6, 2024.

Homeworld 3 is a lot to process. There's a lot of history to this series that I'm not familiar with, a lot of story, and a lot of hopes from long-time fans that saw over 8,000 people invest in a crowdfunding-investor scheme that eventually got canceled. It also doesn't help that maneuvering in true 3D space just doesn't play well with my brain. But despite all of that, I cant help be intrigued by the possibilities and idiosyncrasies the game presents, even if I'm fighting the controls most of the way.
For those new to the series, Homeworld's most defining feature is the depth of its gameplay, quite literally. While most RTS inhabit a relatively flat plane, Homeworld uses all three dimensions for its canvas, which can make for an extraordinary sight as dogfighters dance an intricate and deadly ballet around each other, dipping between nebulae and capital ships for cover. It also makes for a decidedly higher skill floor than your average FPS, and one I'm still struggling to reach.
There is an impressive suite of options and rebindable controls to help you navigate these extra dimensions though. In fact, there are so many I was near constantly looking back to the key bindings list or hopping back to the tutorial between missions to remind myself of certain features and controls. Developer Blackbird Interactive have done a pretty admirable job of making it fairly intuitive once you grasp them, but I still had a number of hangups with some commands. For one, while you usually have a nice click and drag option for selecting the height of your destination, clicking over a bit of asteroid or other terrain piece will place the target on its surface instead. The levels are full of these terrain pieces. You can override it with a plane tool, but in the middle of combat it's fiddly to keep pressing that hotkey on and off even if you do rebind it to something more manageable. More than once I've had an errant click send my fighters straight past the bomber wing I wanted protected and over to investigate some fascinating rocks instead.
Some issues are more common strategy game gripes that the extra dimension only complicates. Having to reinforce and reassign command groups on the fly can be either a slight inconvenience or a complete chore depending on the game. In Homeworld 3, it's definitely the latter. You can select entire groups of the same ship easily enough, but trying to split them into smaller taskforces to go after smaller objectives is a nightmare. Select multiple groups of ships and they'll stick in their old formations instead of grouping up, which sounds useful but actually just ends up with you constantly having to re-click the formation button just to get a squadron to stick together.
When not fighting with you for control, the game is gorgeous. If constant pausing and re-issuing commands wasn't a necessity, I'd happily spend entire fights watching individual fighters scramble to survive, or track the accumulation of battle damage on ponderous capital ships. There are some really nice effects too, like the dust blowing off the flat hull of your mothership and catching the light of a nearby star. I've never been much of a screenshot fiend, but this game might be what changes that.
But back to the game as a whole, there are a few main modes to play: multiplayer, a co-op roguelite mode, and the classic story campaign. There is a movie to get you caught up on the history of Homeworld's story, but I went in blind the first time and didn't have too much trouble following along. It follows Imogen S'jet, a Hiigaran scientist turned navigator as she is interred inside a prototype mothership and sent out to prevent "The Anomaly" from causing the collapse of her civilization. The missions felt pretty varied, and flowed from dodging asteroids to desperate last stands to capturing nodes within rusting hulks of precursor structures. The campaign also has the interesting twist that you keep your units from the last map as long as you didn't leave them behind when you hyperjump, which I imagine is part of the inspiration for the roguelite mode.
Like a lot of sci-fi, the plot is swimming in definite articles (THE Anomaly, THE Incarnate, THE Cores), and I confess I wasn't immediately pulled in despite it not actually being too hard to follow. While your assailants being mysterious is part of the plot I still never got much of a sense of who they were or even what the Hiigarans were like as a culture, and while the ship designs are a cool combination of sleek and industrial they don't really differentiate well between types or factions. Imogen, the main character, and her intel officer Isaac didn't really compel me as characters, which isn't helped by Imogen spending most of her time shaking her head and making faces from inside a water tank. That said I do have to applaud the voice work from Ike Amadi, who exudes the same kind of gentle authority he does in his much smaller role in Helldivers 2, and Elysia Rotaru who does a great job of selling Imogen as concerned but trying to hold it together. The brief moment of hesitation as she announces the destruction of a harvester unit is a great touch.
Then there's the War Games mode, which follows in the trend of things like Honkai: Star Rail's Simulated Universe by taking an existing gameplay system and layering randomized upgrades and objectives over the top for more replayability, and of course the tantailizing allure of crafting a overpowered build. It's a really promising idea, truly, but the cracks in Homeworld 3's foundation are only excacerbated by the more frantic missions with less downtime and the removal of the pause feature (likely due to the co-op capability, but still sorely missed in solo play). The finickiness of the ship behavious and the extra button presses required to execute basic movement commands all add up to be more frustrating than compelling, not helped by a lot of the more basic upgrades you get being simple percentage increases rather than new options for playstyles.
Ultimately, Homeworld 3 doesn't quite hit the mark, but it does manage to demonstrate at least part of what made the series so compelling originally. If the game achieves nothing else, I hope it manages to reignite some interest in the series, or at least the concept. I think there's a lot yet to explore with Real Time Strategy in a 3D space, and I know I'll be looking to get a hold of the previous games to see what they did with it.
Homeworld 3 is immediately available for Windows PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store.

Final Fantasy fans who also use Apple products, prepare to take your tech to the next level with some official Final Fantasy accessories. The Japanese Square Enix store is offering AirPods Pro case covers and Apple Watch bands with motifs and characters from the series.
The North American store does not offer these products. There are watches and AirPods Pro cases you can purchase though. If you want the Final Fantasy Apple accessories from the Japanese Square Enix store, you might have to use a proxy service of some kind to get them, as the site doesn't offer international shipping.
There are four kinds of AirPods case covers, costing 4950 JPY ($31.45) each. They're only compatible with the first generation of AirPods Pro. They're available with the Cloudy Wolf and One-Winged Angel designs from Final Fantasy VII Advent Children, as well as in the Rhythm and Music styles from Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster. There are five different looks for the Apple Watch bands, with two for Adventure Children and three for Pixel Remaster. They're also available for 4950 JPY ($31.45). A lot has been said about Metal Gear Solid V over the years. One hot topic always seems to involve Kiefer Sutherland and the voice of Venom Snake. Much controversy stems from the decision to replace longtime Snake voice actor David Hayter with the actor. However, Sutherland had his own merits.
Warning: This article includes spoilers for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.
First things first! I do feel that David Hayter should have been Snake, or at least involved somewhat in the game. The way he was tossed aside never did sit right with me. However, I think Kiefer Sutherland is an incredible actor. I was sad about Hayter, but optimistic about Sutherland when the news first broke.
What we got, especially given the situation, was a truly stellar Venom Snake performance by Kiefer Sutherland. He brought a reverence and mystery to Venom Snake, while still providing enough of what people came to expect. Given the twist of Venom not actually being Big Boss, the entire thing played into the lore. Sutherland did an excellent job playing someone who thought he was someone else.
"You've written your own history."
Venom Snake has very few lines of dialogue, often functioning as a borderline silent protagonist. This minimalistic approach is intentional, again given the game's now famous twist ending. Despite the limited dialogue, much of Sutherland's performance shines through the use of facial motion capture. It's a feature that was nearly impossible in previous Metal Gear Solid games due to technical limitations.
Through his facial expressions, Sutherland effectively conveys the complex emotions of Venom Snake. He appears confident in spite of confusion. He is patient, yet intolerant of foolishness. This nuanced performance adds depth to the character and helps immerse the player in the game's narrative. Hideo Kojima, the game's creator, mentioned that this was one reason for casting a film actor like Sutherland. (However, he'd been trying to replace Hayter with a film actor for years, so I think Kojima just really wants to be best friends with celebrities.)
When Sutherland does get an opportunity to speak as Venom Snake, he knocks it out of the park with a quiet confidence that only comes from his decades of experience. I want to pick out one scene in particular that I feel is quite possibly the best monologue in the entire series. It's short, poignant, and wonderfully performed.
The scene occurs at the end of Mission 43, "Shining Lights, Even in Death." After an emotionally draining mission, during which Venom Snake (and thus us) is forced to kill his infected soldiers, there is a scene where the ashes of the fallen are prepared to be buried at sea.
Tensions run high as Huey accuses Snake of being responsible for the massacre. Miller defends Snake, insisting that there was no other way and that the soldiers wanted him to shoot them. As Venom Snake begins to spread the first urn of ashes, he stops and delivers one of the most famous lines in the game:
He then spreads the ashes on his own face.
Finally, he decides that the soldiers will not be buried at sea but will instead be ground into diamonds and worn on their uniforms.
This scene stands out as one of the most emotional in the series, and Sutherland's performance is a significant part of its impact. His delivery is quiet, sorrowful, and restrained, effectively conveying the weight of the moment. The facial expressions and subtle nuances in his voice draw the player into Venom Snake's emotions.
Unlike the dramatic and overtly emotional death of Sniper Wolf, this scene carries multiple layers of complexity. Sutherland portrays a Venom Snake who blames himself yet remains strong for his surviving soldiers, reveres his fallen comrades, and grapples with his quest for revenge. This intricate performance would have been challenging for a less experienced actor.
While Metal Gear Solid V has its share of problems, the performance of Kiefer Sutherland and the "Shining Lights, Even in Death" scene are highlights. They remind us why the series is so beloved. Despite the controversy, Sutherland brought depth and nuance to Venom Snake, proving that he was a worthy successor to the iconic role.
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is currently available on PS4, Xbox One and PC.
