Brutal survival game Soulmask teases hardcore servers and PvP seasons

A truism in life is that you can't make everyone happy. Not everyone is going to love what you create and that'll be the same no matter what you do. Recently, huge survival sim Soulmask has been trying to become a little less tough on players, especially those who are new to the game. A few different patches have made the game less challenging in some areas, and a few fans are worried that this indicates a change in direction for the game. In a recent Q&A held on the Soulmask Discord, developer CampFire Studios is attempting to lay these fears to rest.

Warframe 1999's voice actors are the

To borrow Digital Extremes' own words, they've certainly pushed the boat out with Warframe 1999. The Metal Gear Solid-inspired questline has exploding motorcycles, the game's first-ever dating sim, and a pounding, industrial metal soundtrack that's absolute perfection. But none of that means anything without a solid cast of characters - in this instance, The Hex, our merry, Guardians of the Galaxy-esque band of protoframe misfits. It's a star-studded cast both in and outside of the game, with Final Fantasy 16 and Expedition 33's Ben Starr captaining the squad as the rough-and-ready Arthur, and Cyberpunk 2077's Alpha Takahashi causing chaos as Aoi. They're pitted against Resident Evil's Nick Apostolides, the seemingly harmless frontman of boy band On-Lyne who, it turns out, isn't just a pretty face.

Lenovo Legion Slim 5 review: OLED gaming at a surprisingly low price

OLED monitors are truly the stuff of dreams. If you're after crisp, beautiful colors, deep inky black tones, phenomenal response times, and top-tier refresh rates, no other panel tech even mildly comes close to delivering all those elements in one go. The Lenovo Legion Slim 5 14APH8 pairs exactly that with an exceptionally low price tag, meaning this laptop offers extraordinary value already.

It's not without fault, of course. Lenovo has certainly cut some corners to facilitate that heavy investment, particularly given that this OLED screen also comes with an impressive 2,880 x 1,800 resolution as well. For the money, though, the Lenovo Legion Slim 5 is one of the best gaming laptops out there today.

Who's it for then? Simply put, a gamer who's not looking to waste any cash. The less budget you have, the more valuable that budget becomes, certainly when it comes to putting it in the right place. It's a balancing act, making sure you don't accidentally buy a laptop that has an obvious bottleneck, and Lenovo has worked hard to ensure that's not going to happen.

There is one big caveat to that statement, but I'll touch on that in the benchmark section. I've been testing the Legion Slim 5 for around two weeks now, using it as my daily driver at times, gaming on it at others, and have run it through all manner of benchmarks. I even managed to sneak in a few hours on Baldur's Gate 3 with it as well.

Nvidia is working on a new, slightly slower, RTX 4070, says leak

Nvidia could be about to release a new slightly slower version of the RTX 4070, according to new rumors. A new Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 GDDR6 variant could use slightly slower GDDR6 memory instead of the usual GDDR6X, which could result in a lower price for the new versions.

The rumor of a new variant of one of the best graphics cards you can buy will be sweet music to the ears of those who have been tempted by the RTX 4070 but have found its $550 price still too high. There's no guarantee Nvidia will drop the price of a slightly slower version, but we'd be surprised if a small saving didn't accompany the new card, if it does turn out to be real.

Ultra realistic milsim Uboat is doing amazingly well on Steam

Uboat is precisely the kind of game I love to see doing well on Steam. It's committed, its creators clearly love the subject matter, and after five years in early access, it deserves a successful launch. A realistic submarine simulation game set during WWII, Uboat threads the line between believability and accessibility - unlike some milsims, where everything is recreated 1:1, in Uboat, the aesthetic and tone are very grounded, but mechanically, there's a way in for everyone. Tense and tough, despite its niche premise, the underwater strategy shooter with hints of War Thunder and Command and Conquer is currently thriving on Steam, and deservedly so.

Ex GTA dev is making a deck building dungeon maker, you can try it now

The best roguelikes are defined by their dungeons. Hades pits you against the depths of the Greek underworld, Enter the Gungeon sends you into an oubliette themed around firearms, and Slay the Spire tasks you with ascending the world's deadliest tower. The setting isn't the only reason these roguelikes work, of course, but each dungeon sets the tone for your adventure. But what happens when you make that dungeon yourself? This is a question Into the Restless Ruins aims to answer. Created by a former Rockstar, GTA, and Call of Duty dev, the roguelike deck builder's Steam demo is finally live for everyone to try.

The best Rainbow Six game of all time now costs less than $3

Rainbow Six Siege has its place. It's an energetic, imaginative multiplayer FPS with some smart mechanics and a good mix of arcade pace and simulation-style gravitas. It's a solid online shooter - but it's not Rainbow Six, not in the real, classic sense. Rainbow Six is slow, tense, and your life is balanced on a knife edge. It almost feels like a survival horror game, something close to tank-control legends like Silent Hill and Resident Evil. Rainbow Six Vegas was maybe the last R6 game in that original mold. But the best one, for me, remains Rainbow Six 3, and now 21 years later, it's all yours for less than $3.

More gamers are still using this 2016 Nvidia GPU than any AMD model

Nvidia's GeForce RTX 4060 might be gradually winning over the hearts and minds of PC gamers, but there's one GPU that sticks out like a particularly sore thumb in the latest Steam Survey. It's not from the current Nvidia GPU generation, the one before it, or even the one before that. It's the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060. This GPU has no ray tracing or AI hardware, and it came out in 2016, but it's still the eighth most popular gaming GPU among Steam users. It not only has more users than the RTX 4070, but it's also a great deal more popular than any AMD GPU, even now.

Even now, the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 can still be sighted all over the place, despite being eight years old. It hasn't been one of the best graphics card options for years, but you still see it regularly listed in the minimum system requirements for the latest games, simply because so many people use it.

Lenovo's website hints at new smaller 7-inch Legion Go gaming handheld

Lenovo's Legion Go gaming handheld impressed us in many ways when it first landed, but one aspect that ultimately held it back as a truly portable gaming device was its size. That could be about to change if Lenovo's own website is anything to go by, however, as a mention of a 7-inch screen version of the handheld hints that there's a smaller Lenovo Legion Go Lite in the works.

This isn't the first we've heard about Lenovo working on a more affordable alternative to the current Legion Go. Back in May, there were rumors of a cheaper Legion Go that would use the less powerful Ryzen Z1 processor, rather than the Z1 Extreme of the current version. However, that was the last we heard of a new Lenovo contender for our best handheld gaming PC guide, until now.

Palworld Discord Shop Avatar Icon and Profile Cosmetic Effects Extended

Back on July 10, 2024, Pocketpair announced on social media that Palworld Discord Shop animated avatar icon and profile cosmetic effects would be sold until July 24, 2024. On August 5, 2024, the company again took to social media to extend the run of the items in the official storefront until December 31, 2024.

Here's the announcement, which confirmed that the items will remain in the Discord Shop. It included official art of the Discord Wumpus mascot with the Pals Chillet, Cattiva, and Lamball. The reasoning for the extension is that fan demand showed a desire for the items to remain available for an extended period.

https://twitter.com/Palworld_EN/status/1820444653054763150

We ended up seeing nine Palworld avatar and profile items appear in the Discord Shop as part of the promotion. There's also a Best Pals Forever Bundle that pairs the Wake Up profile design with Cattiva, Chikipi, and Lamball with the Chillet avatar cosmetic for $17.99.

Here's the list of all of the items in the storefront until the end of 2025. Some of them are inspired by the Sakurajima update that launched in June 2024, such as the cosmetic with Saya on it.

  • Cattiva Avatar Icon Cosmetic: $9.99 ($7.99 with Nitro)

Review: Natsu-Mon: 20th Century Summer Kid Cozy Life Sim Sparks Joy

Once you hit a certain age, life gets so busy. You tend to see it all. Work takes up more of your life than you'd expect. Arranging time to hang out with friends can get tougher. It's part of why some probably seek out a cozy life sim or two, so they can at least virtually enjoy some downtime. With Natsu-Mon: 20th Century Summer Kid, Millennium Kitchen and Toybox present an experience that perfectly recreates that summer vacation experience. It really is like you're 10 again, life is new and fresh, you have total freedom, and only new, pleasant, positive experiences await you.

Satoru is a circus kid. I mean, not literally. His parents are letting him decide his own path. But the two of them are a part of a circus, and the three of them set up shop with coworkers at Yomogi Town for a show. While Satoru's parents and crew work out some details related to the show and debt, he — and by extension the player — have the whole summer ahead of them to explore the town, meet the locals, engage in peaceful activities, take on challenges like bug catching, fishing, fundraising, solving mysteries, and summer homework. While there are recommended quests and you'll eventually take on tasks that increase your stamina for climbing power, it's up to you to do what makes you happy.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nnPRIEbXqWE

Almost immediately after getting into Natsu-Mon, a player is given the freedom to do whatever they'd like. After initially talking with your family, the owner of the Guesthouse Ashitaba where you're staying, and fellow circus troupe members… you're free. I ended up catching 10 bugs to boost my stamina by one, met the local kids and agreed to help them with their first mystery, then got home in time for dinner. After that, I met more of the people staying at Ashitaba, talked to the Shrine Dude, relit lanterns, then fell asleep. The next day, I took a look at my map to see who I hadn't met yet, talked to more locals, and looked into doing some fishing to help the circus with some debt.

You're never gated off while playing Natsu-Mon, and it's refreshing. I felt like as long as I kept being curious and exploring, I'd get to see new things, meet new people, and savor these delightful moments. Especially since it's so easy to earn Stickers to increase the Stamina gauge for climbing and dashing via things like Big Adventures quests or Flatfoot Files with the Yomogi Town kids. And recounting said activities in the diary for summer school homework is a great way to keep track of everything you've done.

Which also ties in to another amazing thing about Natsu-Mon: the localization. I think it's one of the most charming, cozy, funny, creative, and curious scripts in a Switch life sim. The lines Satoru has, including the choices you can make for his responses, are fantastic. The reactions of other characters are so personable and feel real. This is one of those games where you want to talk to every NPC, as well as do so as often as possible, so you can see what they'll say next. I will definitely eventually replay it again, so I can relive certain moments, like the summer festival and see experience certain interactions again.

The only time Natsu-Mon doesn't delight is that sometimes this life sim can feel more awkward than cozy. For example, you might occasionally happen upon a challenge or task that involves Satoru engaging in some light parkouring or platforming. Lighting the shrine lanterns is a perfect example. As good as the game is, it doesn't lend itself well to precise jumping. It also can be so freeform that, before you find your bearings, you might not immediately know where to go and what to do. On the very first day, I found myself flummoxed when it came to figuring out how to actually go to bed. Especially since the game just warned that if I stayed up late, I would miss morning exercises! I also found myself wasting time the first day trying to find a way to fish, with it not happening for me until my second day began. Also, while bug catching does involve a helpful circle around potential catches within range, I sometimes didn't feel like I was catching the critter I intended to if multiple ones were around.

Natsu-Mon: 20th Century Summer Kid launched at a time when I really needed it, and that made me appreciate this cozy life sim even more. The older we get, the rarer it is to enjoy weeks of freedom, discovery, and joy. I get so caught up in work, especially around summer events when there are events back-to-back. Millennium Kitchen and Toybox really captured the magic of a peaceful summer where you can live at your own pace. Everything is new and an adventure. It's refreshing and rejuvenating.

Natsu-Mon: 20th Century Summer Kid will be available for the Nintendo Switch and PC on August 6, 2024. A demo is available on the Switch.

Monolith Soft Hiring for New Tetsuya Takahashi Led RPG

Xenoblade Chronicles game developer Monolith Soft is currently hiring staff members for a new RPG led by Tetsuya Takahashi. At the time of writing there are no details about the new title the developers are creating.

Monolith Soft is interested in hiring all kinds of staff, but are looking in eight specific categories. To be specific, it noted it needs 2D designers and artwork staff, 3DCG designers for character models, 3DCG designers for map environments, development environment engineer, field level designer, assistant director, in-game animator, and effect designers. Additionally, the developer is looking for people of all skill levels, from asset development to lead positions.

Director Tetsuya Takahashi described the new game as "a new challenge compared to previous Monolith Soft games." Takahashi also said that, up to this point, the company has been operating with a relatively small number of people when comparing to the large scale of the games produced by the developers. While the developers are proud of this, Takahashi also said that they can't say this is the case anymore, considering the current situation within the games industry.

Monolith Soft is a development studio currently owned by Nintendo, and it is the creator of the recent Xenoblade Chronicles series, as well as the Xenosaga and Baten Kaitos series. Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is the company's latest title and it is available for the Nintendo Switch.

Last My Hero Academia Manga Chapter Involves a Timeskip

The My Hero Academia manga ended with chapter 430, which ran on August 4, 2024, and the last installment involved a timeskip into the future of its characters. People can now read that chapter, as well as chapters 1, 2, 3, 428, and 429, via MangaPlus and Viz Media.

Editor's Note: There will be no spoilers for the last chapter of the My Hero Academia manga in the news story below.

Like many of the preceding chapters of My Hero Academia, chapter 430 of the manga is 20 pages long. There is a color two-page spread that shows Deku and his classmates alongside All Might. They are all wearing their school uniforms and depicted as they were after the final battles at the end of the series.

From there, the final My Hero Academia installment kicks off with a timeskip into the future. It picks up eight years after the events in chapter 429. While one character is the main focus of the chapter, we also get to meet a new student preparing to attend U.A. High School. Other familiar characters are directly referenced with notes stating what they are doing now, while others appear in the background as Easter eggs for those who pay close attention.

There's no release window for the final volume of the manga in Japanese or English yet. Volume 38, which covered chapters 375-385, launched in North America on June 4, 2024. Volume 39 will launch on October 1, 2024. The latest volume to appear in Japan was 41, which launched on August 2, 2024. That contained 411 through 422. Now that the series ended, there are also plans for an art book and other items.

The My Hero Academia manga is now over, and Viz Media handles physical copies outside Japan. The anime is streaming on Crunchyroll. A board game is in development.

Fairy Tail Dungeons - official indie games coming to PC Steam

Kodansha announced that it has established the Fairy Tail Indie Game Guild project. It will use this guild to help independent game creators release games themed after Hiro Mashima's manga series of the same title.

The company also revealed the first two games that will be part of the project. It will release both titles on PC via Steam worldwide in seven languages: Japanese, English, French, Korean, Thai, Traditional Chinese, and Simplified Chinese.

Fairy Tail: Dungeons will be the first game in this project. It will feature a rogue-lite gameplay system where the player will collect magic cards based on attacks from the series' characters and construct a deck with them for the chosen character to fight monsters inside the dungeon. This game will be available on August 27, 2024 in Japan, South Korea, Eastern Australia, and New Zealand, or August 26, 2024 for the rest of the world.

The second game in the project will be Fairy Tail: Beach Volleyball Havoc. As the title suggests, this game will feature casual beach volleyball matches between Fairy Tail characters with additional special magic effects. Kodansha will release this game simultaneously worldwide on September 16 or 17, 2024, depending on the time zone.

The Fairy Tail series already has an official RPG for PC and consoles developed by Koei Tecmo's Gust, and the same studio is working on its sequel that will appear in Winter 2024. The new indie titles will further complement the lineup of games based on the franchise. In the Japanese press release, Kadokawa added that it will release Fairy Tail: Birth of Magic, a versus game with original magic creation system, as the third indie title.

Fairy Tail: Dungeons will appear first on August 26 or 27, 2024, and Fairy Tail: Beach Volleyball Havoc will follow on September 16 or 17, 2024. Both Fairy Tail indie games will be available worldwide digitally on PC via Steam.

Monster Hunter Wilds Greatsword

Capcom started releasing overview videos showing off the new features and returning weapons in Monster Hunter Wilds. The first two to drop include a look at how the Greatsword will play in this entry alongside a video on the new Focus Mode mechanic.

The Monster Hunter Wilds trailer about Focus Mode outlines its use as a precision tool for hunters looking to target the weak spots that emerge as you strike the same monster part repeatedly. It locks the player character onto the monster to make aiming and guarding easier. It also highlights weak spots and enables special Focus Strikes, which appear unique to different weapons.

You can see the video on Focus Mode here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_v3lnXyNFhI

While Focus Mode is an entirely new addition, the Greatsword is a returning weapon in Monster Hunter Wilds. The trailer goes over the traditional big, but slow, style of the sword that is able to knock monsters out of their attack animations if timed right. However, the video also shows an increased focus on guarding and a possible new counter attack, as well as how the special Focus Strike can target multiple weak spots with a lengthy slash.

You can watch the Monster Hunter Wilds Greatsword Overview video below:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t2h3Uxj7nNg

In July 2024, Capcom and Urakita celebrated Monster Hunter's 20th anniversary by unveiling wooden tankards based on those seen in the game. In June 2024, Capcom released a new trailer for Wilds that featured a winding, snake-like monster called the Balahara.

Monster Hunter Wilds is expected to launch for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S sometime in 2025.

Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom Hyrule Trailer Has Horses

Nintendo shared a new The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom trailer that makes Hyrule itself the star, though we also get to see Zelda again and how she'll ride horses and fast travel around the kingdom. It's entirely focused on new gameplay from the title.

The "Traversing Hyrule" The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom trailer begins at the castle and town surrounding it at the central plateau, before moving on to other areas. In order, glimpses of Gerudo Desert, Jabul Waters, Eldin Volcano, and Faron Wetlands appear. We also get to see the different people who live in these places. They may offer sidequests for Zelda, which she may be able to help with by recreating echoes of enemies or items in front of them.

After that, the new The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom trailer gets into travel options by showing off the fast travel waypoints and horses. Once Zelda reaches a waypoint, it will appear on the map and can be immediately teleported to at any time. For getting around to places, perhaps when you haven't unlocked fast travel points, it will be possible to call a horse with a carrot echo. The horse can also jump over small ledges and attack an enemy by running into it.

Here's the latest trailer:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DolGuwvAnfg

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom will come to the Nintendo Switch on September 26, 2024. Pre-orders are open, with some stores already offering pre-order bonuses.

Sega Files 'Yakuza Wars' Game Trademark

Sega filed a new trademark under the Yakuza Wars title. The company filed the trademark on July 26, 2024, and it appeared on the Chizai Watch database on August 5, 2024 at 8am JST (August 7 at 4pm pT/7pm ET.)

The name for this new trademark could give a hint to the development of a sequel or a new spin-off title in the Like a Dragon series, which was previously known as Yakuza outside of Japan. However, given the recent attempts of Sega to rebrand the series to the Like a Dragon original Japanese name, it is unclear what the new Yakuza Wars trademark will end up becoming.

As a reminder, Sega and RGG Studio announced in early April 2024 that the developers are now holding auditions to find actors and actresses for a new Like a Dragon game. In addition, series producer Masayoshi Yokoyama confirmed that this new game will not be a Yakuza Kiwami 3 remake.

More information about the new Yakuza Wars trademark will appear in the future. The most recent Yakuza game is Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth which released earlier on January 25, 2024 for the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC.
