This week, one of the three events each year in which we're routinely graced with the presence of Geoff Keighley took place, with Gamescom Opening Night Live kicking off the week-long convention in Cologne, Germany. A host of World Premiere trailers and other announcements came out of that, including the first teaser…

In a week that included a Geoff Keighley-led showcase and dozens of announcements, the most talked-about topic in games was Black Myth: Wukong, the Chinese action-RPG that earned a mixed Kotaku review for at times undermining its own epic ambitions. As those ambitions have awed some players and absolutely wrecked…

Square Enix drops some big fixes for the Final Fantasy 16 PC demo

While I truly adored Final Fantasy 16 on PS5, the PC reception to the demo has been mixed. Between issues with PC performance and the overall story and pacing (I promise you this part gets much better), the impending FF16 launch might still need some screws tightening. The good news is that Square Enix is aware of this, making some sweeping changes to the demo of Clive's adventure. Not only does this bode well for how the RPG runs at launch, but also suggests that the PC demo will stick around, just like the one on PlayStation.

Dragon Age The Veilguard gets unique spinoff with your new best buds

Dragon Age: The Veilguard is set to deliver an epic narrative that finally wraps up the loose ends left by 2014's Inquisition. Though the gameplay of its predecessor was mixed, it's hard to knock the twisting story that continues into The Veilguard. To get you up to speed and introduce you to your new best friends, BioWare is releasing an unexpected spinoff, a podcast series called Dragon Age: Vows and Vengeance.

Slay the Spire and BG3 blend Hellcard is free to try on Steam, for now

There are a lot of deckbuilding roguelikes around these days. Between Balatro, Slay the Spire, Monster Train, Wildfrost, and many more, the prospect of building a deck and taking that into your next run is all too familiar at this point. The genre is diverse, but with so many excellent entries demanding my attention, it's difficult to pick up an entirely new spin on a randomized deck of cards. That's where Hellcard comes in, because not only does this roguelike channel the positional CRPG combat of Baldur's Gate 3, but it's also a co-op spin on the genre you can play for free right now - but you've got to be quick.

Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 realizes the series' medieval RPG ambitions

More than most modern RPGs, the Kingdom Come: Deliverance series is willing to inconvenience you. Peasant-turned-knight protagonist Henry is back after learning to swing a sword and maintain reasonable hygiene standards in the 2018 original, but it's clear from my hands-on Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 preview in Prague that he still has far to go in his adventure across 15th-century Bohemia.

Elden Ring's mind-control completionist now tackling Black Myth Wukong

Whenever a new soulslike comes out, there's always a dedicated (or unhinged) group of players that want to make them even harder. From no-hit runs through all of FromSoftware's catalogue to beating two games of Elden Ring with a dance pad and controller simultaneously. These are feats only a select few could ever accomplish. One of the most impressive has been Twitch steamer Perri 'Perrikaryal' Karyal's hands-free 'mind control' runs through Elden Ring. Rising to a new challenge, Karyal is now taking on Black Myth Wukong using her unique setup.

PlayStation's Concord can't even reach 1,000 Steam players at launch

PlayStation's PC strategy has been a rollercoaster this year. Both Helldivers 2 and Concord are first-party multiplayer games that came to PC the same day as PS5, but their stories couldn't be more different. Helldivers 2 launched as the talk of the town, with well over 400,000 players on Steam alone. Concord meanwhile, despite launching at the same price as Arowhead's megahit, has come out with little fanfare, and it can't even break 1,000 players on Steam. What happened?

Overwatch 2 hotfix buffs Juno, but not in the way that matters

Since its launch in 2022, Overwatch 2 has added nine new heroes to its already 32-character-strong roster. Generally, these launches have been far from smooth, with balancing often swinging way too far in either direction. The latest character to join this list is the Martian Support hero Juno. Following outrage that she's made little impact on the meta, a new hotfix has given her some useful tweaks just three days after her release - though it's still missing the mark.

Hello hello hello! This is Edwin chatting. I don't usually get to do these weekend features, but Ollie and James are busy working their magic (stripmining Black Myth: Wukong for guides and fleeing Gamescom), while Nic can't type complete words anymore without getting his hands eaten (see latest domestic update, below). I know that Ollie usually does a picture puzzle for you, but I am comparatively innocent in the ways of Photoshop and more importantly, very lazy - so lazy that I can't think of an elegant way to complete this paragraph, and will proceed immediately to stating: here's what we're all playing this weekend.

I Want More From the Yu-Gi-Oh Sanrio McDonald's Happy Meal Crossover

I ate at McDonald's for lunch or dinner every day since August 20, 2024. Why? That's the day the Yu-Gi-Oh Sanrio Happy Meal, which involves nine plush of characters in special "outfits," kicked off in the US. I'm on a quest to get Silfer the Sky Dragon Kuromi and Exodia Pompompurin. But in the meantime, I have picked up a few of the other characters, and what is here makes me want more than just a one-off crossover with all the quality a fast food joint can afford.

So to refresh, in case you missed it, in the UK a Mc Donald's Happy Meal promotion featuring ten Sanrio characters dressed as Yu-Gi-Oh characters launched in May 2024. Depending on when you would go, you'd get one of the mascots with your meal. This promotion didn't cost any more than usual, like the recent collector's cup affair. Now in August 2024, that same crossover event ended up repeated in the US.

Well, almost identical. Our run doesn't include the full "set." Badtz-Maru as Red-Eyes Black Dragon ended up being left out. I don't know why. Yes, I'm sad about it too.

Anyways. My quest resulted in the acquisition of four of the Yu-Gi-Oh Sanrio Happy Meal plush toys so far. They're pretty great in some ways! I ended up with Dark Magician Hello Kitty (#1), Blue-Eyes White Dragon Cinnamoroll (#2), Kuriboh Keroppi (#4), and Obelisk the Tormentor Tuxedosam. These stuffed animals aren't as traditionally soft as others or fluffy. Rather, McDonald's went with printed fabric that focuses on accurately displaying the characters in their costumes. The attention to detail means that both the front and back of each mascot has a printed design. So say if you flip over Tuxedosam, you'll see his lil' penguin tail and the Obelisk the Tormentor wings. It's cute! They also seem surprisingly durable. At least, the quality appears better than some Happy Meal toys.

But also, honestly, it's a tad disappointing too. The string loop attached at the top of each plush is incredibly small! It made me feel like the best option for displaying it, once you get one, is to perhaps get a cork board with push pins and hang them or arrange some series of hooks somewhere. Using some sort of elastic would have offered more versatility with display options. Or, even better, a plastic hook. Perhaps it wouldn't be secure enough to use it as a big keychain, but it'd provide more options.

I think McDonald's should have leaned into the Yu-Gi-Oh Sanrio Happy Meal crossover a bit further too. Right now, it is 100% to the benefit of Sanrio fans who want a cute mascot to display or use as a decoration. However… why aren't there actual cards? We've seen Pokemon Trading Card game Happy Meal promotions before. What I'm saying is, I wanted a Blue-Eyes White Dragon card that would be completely identical to the ones found in the actual Yu-Gi-Oh card game, just with the art of the dragon replaced with the picture of Cinnamoroll dressed as that monster.

Also, while I am very happy about these plush and plan to further ruin my health by continuing to eat Happy Meals until I get Slifer the Sky Dragon Kuromi, Exodia the Forbidden One Pompompurin, and The Winged Dragon of Ra Chococat, the items we got make me want even more merchandise based on this crossover. I'd love a cute bag or storage box with the characters on them. A more durable acrylic or rubber keychain would be fun. Maybe a small, plastic figure that's one or two inches tall.

Essentially, I'm saying the Yu-Gi-Oh Sanrio crossover concept is too good to just be limited to these McDonald's Happy Meal plush toys. I do love them, mind you. But it is because I love them that I think Konami and Sanrio should do even more with the idea. Also... I'm starting to get really tired of McDonald's nuggets...

The Yu-Gi-Oh Sanrio Happy Meal plush toys are now at McDonald's stores in the United States while supplies last.
