Kotaku Monday, November 4, 2024 3:50 PM Dragon Age: The Veilguard is probably BioWare's most polished game. Kotaku Monday, November 4, 2024 2:45 PM The recently released remake of Silent Hill 2 is one of 2024's best horror games and a fantastic adaption of the original 2001 classic. PCGamesN Monday, November 4, 2024 3:32 PM Call of Duty Black Ops 6 is already a record breaker and, generally speaking, is earning the admiration of FPS fans (myself very much included). However, the new CoD's multiplayer experience does have a few things holding it back from being truly exceptional right now. Fear not, because this new Black Ops 6 update is taking a swing at some of those issues, with improvements to weapon and player XP gain, more tweaks to spawn logic, and a balancing pass that affects some of the most popular guns in the game. PCGamesN Monday, November 4, 2024 1:41 PM Over the years, the Test Drive series has produced some brilliant racing games that are right up there with the big dogs like Forza, Burnout, and Need for Speed. However, while it's incredibly ambitious and full of plenty of beautifully-recreated cars, the latest entry, Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown, has struggled to find its footing due to a litany of technical and server issues since it launched just over seven weeks ago. For an open-world, MMO-esque racer, these issues have seriously hampered the experience, and as a result, players are about to be awarded some compensation . PCGamesN Monday, November 4, 2024 1:37 PM The first you hear when launching Slitterhead, the debut game from the Silent Hill, Siren, and Gravity Rush alumni at Bokeh Game Studios, is a chorus of voices rising in a dissonant sort of harmony. Some of these voices are deep, groaning in a low invocatory tone, while others are in a higher register, wailing quietly and unnervingly atop their counterparts. PCGamesN Monday, November 4, 2024 12:48 PM What are the best multiplayer games? Intricate gameplay and glistening visuals only go so far; humans often provide the biggest surprises with schemes that transform even the most average game into an unforgettable experience you'll be talking about until the end of time. Fast and frantic or tense and calculated, the best multiplayer games come in all shapes and sizes. Whether it's vying for control of the payload in an FPS game or fighting for survival in a co-op game with your friends, these experiences wouldn't be the same without a bunch of real people. PCGamesN Monday, November 4, 2024 12:36 PM If you feel like the MMO genre is crowded right now, Pioner is the irradiated answer you've been looking for. It's a Stalker-like Soviet FPS with Escape From Tarkov PvP and MMO mechanics all rolled into one. Best of all, beta sign-ups have just opened. There's nothing I love more than grounded sci-fi with a grubby aesthetic, and Pioner has that in spades. MORE FROM PCGAMESN: Best apocalypse games, Best MMOs, Best survival games |
PCGamesN Monday, November 4, 2024 12:36 PM It's not the frightening, dark, and dour moments that make The Forest special - it's when you find something beautiful. A survival game where you gnaw on raw meat, build crude weapons to beat cannibalistic monsters to death, and get violently ill from drinking pond water, The Forest is also a celebration of life's smaller pleasures. Especially played with a friend, there's profound satisfaction in building a house together, or sitting down beneath the moonlight to barbecue the day's catch. Frostpunk has the politics, RimWorld the mechanical complexity, and Valheim the Norse aesthetic, but The Forest - which, if you take it from the earliest alpha build, is now ten years old - remains one of the PC's greatest survival games. And now it's more popular on Steam than ever before. MORE FROM PCGAMESN: Best survival games, Best horror games, Best co-op games |

PCGamesN Monday, November 4, 2024 12:20 PM The simultaneous reveal of both a PS5 Pro specs leak and this month's latest Steam hardware survey results means we can fairly confidently say that there's a strong likelihood the upcoming console is more powerful than your gaming PC. That's because the top five most popular graphics cards on Steam have less processing power than the 16,7TFLOPs GPU in Sony's latest offering, and only two of the top ten are faster. With the PS5 Pro release date only days away, it won't be long before we can test just how speedy the new Sony console truly is. PCGamesN Monday, November 4, 2024 12:21 PM What are the best skateboard games? In the past, it was tough to find a skateboarding game on PC, with the genre having its heyday during the PS2 and Xbox 360 console generations. Recently, however, the skateboarding gaming scene has seen a resurgence, with realistic skate sims making the most of the PC platform to deliver the most accurate skateboarding games yet. Nothing quite captures a moment in time like the years when skateboarding was at its mainstream peak. A mixture of creativity and aggression, skateboarding can be a true expression of style, and the best skateboarding games all manage to capture that in some form. PCGamesN Monday, November 4, 2024 12:16 PM Is Roblox shutting down? There always seems to be a rumor that Roblox is going to shut down. Let's get one thing clear early on: anyone who tells you that Roblox is shutting down is incorrect. Roblox Corporation has tweeted confirmation that the game isn't going anywhere, so you can relax and get back to playing your favorite games. However, if you are curious to know where this rumor originated and how it got so big, we've done a little digging to uncover one of the sources of the speculation. With Roblox achieving a lifetime revenue of over $1 billion and over $70 million in payouts to creators, it would seem utterly ludicrous for the game to shut down. PCGamesN Monday, November 4, 2024 12:36 PM What are the best Dragon Age The Veilguard skills? Half the fun of Bioware RPGs is taking a ragtag band of nobodies and watching them transform into legendary heroes. Once you've determined Rook's lineage and class, unlocking skills is the next port of call. Skills are the backbone of your build in Dragon Age 4, so getting to grips with how the skill tree works and what specializations can offer is essential. Like most RPG games, Rook and their Dragon Age Veilguard companions gain skill points every time they level up, and the skills you choose will determine how powerful they will be once they reach the Dragon Age Veilguard max level cap. PCGamesN Monday, November 4, 2024 12:23 PM What are the Dragon Age The Veilguard romance options? Half the fun of Dragon Age is deciding which character will be your latest beau. However, it's not just a case of deciding which digital dolls you want to smush together in Bioware's RPG (though, we'll admit, it is a bit of that). Each Veilguard romance offers a new facet of love, adding variability to each playthrough. You can strike up a romance with any of the seven Dragon Age The Veilguard companions you meet in the RPG game. Unlike previous installments, all companions are pansexual, meaning you can successfully proposition any of them in Dragon Age The Veilguard regardless of your Rook's gender or sexuality. However, they aren't strictly "playersexual." Companions can become romantically aligned with each other if you decide not to pursue them, so don't wait too long to choose your perfect love match; they might find their happily ever after elsewhere. The AS Val is slightly different in that it comes with an integrated suppressor, and is just as much use in close-quarters combat as it is in extended firefights. With players still working their way toward unlocking the AS Val, it hasn't quite found its way into the meta yet, although, with our loadout, we think it takes a well-earned place in our best Black Ops 6 loadouts list. PCGamesN Monday, November 4, 2024 11:03 AM Put that boring, black PC case to one side, because it's time to grab the Cooler Master Shark X PC case instead. After the recent launch of its top-end $7,000 gaming PC, built to resemble a shark, Cooler Master is now releasing the Shark X case as a standalone for gamers to use in their own builds, as long as the enormous price tag isn't a problem. Jimmy Sha, Cooler Master CEO, describes the Shark X case as "a masterpiece of technology and art" and, given the distinctive design, he isn't wrong. Even the best PC cases like the NZXT H7 Flow RGB conform to a typical rectangular box shape, and there are very few of the best gaming PCs you can buy right now that break from that mould, either. |

Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Monday, November 4, 2024 10:08 AM Minor spoilers for the first few hours of Veilguard and heavy spoilers for Baldur's Gate 3 For all the things I ended up enjoying about Dragon Age: The Veilguard, it isn't much of an RPG. What little roleplaying it does offer revolves around what flavour of supportive hero you prefer, and you can count the number of impactful dialogue decisions on a three-fingered hand. This might sound utterly damning in the wake of Baldur's Gate 3's incredible reactivity, and if I approached games as some sort of tedious comparative intellectual exercise rather than just, y'know, seeing how I felt about them, then I suppose it would be. Weirdly, though, the recent memory of Baldur's Gate 3 didn't diminish my time with Veilguard at all. It was actually the opposite: it freed Dragon Age from having to carry the torch for a certain period in Bioware's history, and let me enjoy Veilguard for what it was. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Monday, November 4, 2024 9:51 AM Twitch have introduced a new "Politics and Sensitive Social Issues" label for streams that "focus" on topics like "elections, civic integrity, and war or military conflict". As with the streaming giant's existing labels for M-rated material, sexual themes or depictions of gambling, the idea is that viewers can filter out such streams in advance by altering their settings. Advertisers, similarly, can "make better choices about the content they want to advertise next to" - in other words, pull their ads from a whole swathe of material if they don't want to be associated with anything controversial. Twitch's hope is that "the labels will allow advertisers to have more context to inform which types of streams they show their ads alongside, which we expect to increase brands' confidence in running ads on Twitch, and could bring new advertisers to our service." |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Monday, November 4, 2024 9:30 AM It's tempting to frame Straftat as a throwback to an older, better time for the multiplayer FPS, when the lingo was coded in frags and gibs and sucking it down, when satisfaction was drawn entirely from performance rather than some convoluted, artificial system of progression. Not only would this be inaccurate, but it would also do a disservice to what Straftat truly is, namely a wild overcorrection in response to the direction of modern multiplayer gunfests, one that careens straight through retro stations to arrive somewhere new and exciting. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Monday, November 4, 2024 9:14 AM The mystery surrounding Deadlock, Valve's work-in-progress MOBA shooter, has largely evaporated. Its freely extendable invite system is about as effective at controlling player headcount as a disinterested football steward, meaning pretty much anyone with a clued-in Steam friend can get in and start poking around its secrets. And yet, being a lane-pushing wizard fighter in the Dota 2 vein, it's already a vast tangle of interplaying abilities, items, strats, and often unspoken rules, of the kind that even experienced gankists will take hundreds of hours to learn. It's been too much for poor Brendy, at any rate. Still, Brendy is but one man. What if we had but four men, working in tandem to crush lanes and flatten Patrons just as Gabe intended? To find out if Deadlock is indeed more comprehensible as a team sport, Graham, Ed, Ollie, and James joined forces, promptly getting fucked up yet emerging from the warlock hospital with a deeper understanding of its workings. Or, at least, if anyone would keep playing. |

Now that Bandai Namco fully revealed the Death Note: Killer Within game, the company also shared a personality test and trailer to help get people accustomed to it. As a reminder, this is an online-only multiplayer game pitting Light and L against each other to find the Death Note to judge L or expose Kira. As such, the official site with the test is more about finding a role than a character.
The Death Note: Killer Within Personality Test consists of 13 questions. These get into your ambition levels, how you value knowing important information, and your thoughts on control. The results will determine if you'd be better suited as a Kira Follower, L Investigator, L, or Kira role in the game. If you get Kira Follower, Misa Amane art appears, while L and Kira appear for those roles if you get them.
As for the trailer, it goes over how to actually play Death Note: Killer Within, complete with gameplay footage. It begins by looking at Team Kira, whose goal it is to use the Death Note on L and not be caught, while also getting rid of L Investigators. The Kira Follower steals IDs from players so Kira can use those names in the Death Note. L and his Investigators see what's going on, share information, and determine who Kira and the Kira Follower are. If L ends up judged Team Kira wins. Team L needs to fill the Investigation Gauge with tasks or expose Kira to win.
Death Note: Killer Within will launch on November 5, 2024, and the game will be playable online on the PS4, PS5, and PC with cross-play.

Back in 2017, Tokyo Clanpool ended up launching for the Vita in Japan. Now in 2024, it will release worldwide on new platforms. Tokyo Clanpool will get an English global release on the Switch and PC in December 2024, and it will appear digitally and physically.
Tokyo Clanpool is a first-person dungeon-crawler with turn-based battles set in a dystopian future. Monsters from a Reverse City flooded Japan. To fight back, new Prime Minister Natsume Kannuki rallied her cabinet of warriors, which are called Diet Dolls in reference to the Japanese National Diet houses. Players will head into a dungeon tower to face the monsters and head to the source in the sky.
The government theme also comes through in an approval rating system. The people are watching as you go on your runs into the dungeon. If your approval rating is high, the support percentage will go up and you'll get bonuses as you explore. Those can also apparently turn negative if you aren't performing well.
Here's the first English trailer for Tokyo Clanpool highlighting gameplay ahead of the Switch and PC release.
Eastasiasoft also confirmed Play-Asia will sell 3,000 Switch limited editions of Tokyo Clanpool in English. While standard physical copies will be $39.99, the LE will be $59.99. The bonuses in it are an art book, a CD soundtrack, poster, and stickers.
Here's how that looks:
Tokyo Clanpool is available on the Vita in Japan, and it will come to the Switch and PC via GOG in December 2024 in English and Traditional Chinese.

Psyduck finally has a Pokemon Unite release date. The iconic water-type character launches on November 14, 2024.
There's no official gameplay footage for Psyduck yet. However, we do know a few things about the unit ahead of its debut. The character will be a Supporter in the game. Also, while most Pokemon do evolve to their later forms, Psyduck won't. It will remain as-is and not eventually transform into Golduck as you earn experience during a match. As it is a supporter and water-type, expect it to either primarily inflict debuffs or aid allies. Also, since it is known for some psychic attacks like Confusion, that could come up in the character's moveset in-game.
This is one of three recent playable Pokemon confirmations for the game. Armarouge debuted in September 2024. Darkrai followed in October 2024, likely in honor of Halloween.
As a reminder, there's another reason to return to Pokemon Unite besides Psyduck joining the game. Timi Studio is celebrating the launch of Pokemon TCG Pocket. You can log in and claim a snapshot background that looks like the back of Pokemon card. That offer is only available in-game until December 5, 2024.
Pokemon Unite is available on the Nintendo Switch and mobile devices. The Psyduck License will launch on November 14, 2024.

Now that the Monster Hunter Wilds Open Beta Test is closed on all platforms, Capcom put out a call for feedback via a new survey. Until November 8, 2024, people can share what they thought about the experience with the company via the official site.
There are some stipulations to participating in this Monster Hunter Wilds survey, with one of them being that you needed to actually play it on the PS5, Xbox Series X, or PC to give feedback. You also need to have a Capcom ID. Since that's free to get, it's easy enough to meet that require that. As long as you meet those requirements, it really comes down to just getting it filled in before time runs out.
The questions are fairly typical ones. They ask about the person playing, how they played, and what they thought. It's basically an opportunity to provide thoughts that will be potentially directly seen by people. For those who qualify to participate in the Monster Hunter Wilds Open Beta Test survey and do provide feedback, Capcom will provide a themed avatar people can use online.
Monster Hunter Wilds will come to the PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC on February 28, 2025. In Japan, there will be a matching PS5 cover and Dualsense controller released alongside the game.

In the seedy underbelly of Kowloon, a spirit stirs to consciousness before it jumps into and possess the body of a stray dog. It travels through the narrow backstreets, eventually upgrading to a human body, yet still lost on its name and purpose. A woman calls out to him, but in a gruesome display, her head splits open to reveal the monstrous, parasitic creature that had devoured the brains of its original host. This time, it's got its sight set on you. Thus opens up Slitterhead, the debut title from Bokeh Game Studio, which had been founded by the creatives behind Siren, Silent Hill, and Gravity Rush.
Similar to Siren, the Slitterhead plot can be inscrutable at times. It follows Night Owl, a Hyoki that is an otherworldly spirit that can possess sentient beings. Though Night Owl doesn't remember all the details about his past, he does know that he has to eliminate the Slitterheads wandering around Kowloon. Like Night Owl, Slitterheads can possess people and take over their bodies. However, their method of doing so is to literally consume their brains and essentially wear their bodies as a shell. In Night Owl's pursuit of the Slitterheads, he encounters a dying girl named Julee. After possessing her, he not only restores her back to full health, but they're incredibly in sync.
Julee is a Rarity, or a human who boasts high affinity with Hyoki. She's not the only one. As Night Owl and Julee continue their mission to slaughter all of the Slitterheads within Kowloon, they encounter and save other individuals with the potential to host Night Owl. As they work together to rid Kowloon of the Slitterheads plaguing the streets and terrorizing the populace, Night Owl discovers the ability to turn back time and restructure the timeline. With this power, as well as the help of the Rarities, they fight to save Kowloon from its doomed future.
In terms of genre, Slitterhead wears a lot of hats. It's predominantly an action-RPG, though it does feature stealth elements as well. You technically control Night Owl, the Hyoki that can teleport itself between bodies. So for stealth portions, you're able to travel from body to body to avoid detection as you sneak around facilities. Because there are some limitations in how far the Hyoki can leave a body, as well as it needing open access to one, it's not as easy as it sounds. These stealth missions were quite fun since they were a deviation from the norm, but there weren't that many in the game. You can use Sightjack when it comes to hunting down a Slitterhead hiding in a crowd, but the Siren fangirl in me wished that Sightjack had a place in these stealth sequences as well.
This body-hopping mechanic can make battle very fun, which is great because that's the majority of the game. You can switch bodies while your first one is in the middle of a combo to keep up the pressure or if you need to target another enemy. Barring fights where you want to stay in your Rarity or you don't have any other random people milling about, you can also use this mechanic to get out from corners when enemies trap you there. The combat is fast-paced, but it remains challenging with the number of enemies the game can throw at you.
Chase sequences are the final type of gameplay in Slitterhead. Frankly, it didn't take long for these to become tedious. While it's fairly easy to catch up to the Slitterhead you're pursuing using the body-hopping mechanic, they feel like they go on for a very long time. Usually, they're scripted to end after the Slitterhead reaches a destination or you whittle down their HP enough. But it gets rather dull after the first time and unfortunately, the game throws these at you quite often. Aside from using the body-hopping mechanic to possess an NPC in the direction the Slitterhead is running towards so that you can cut them off and get in some hits, you can also use blood to parkour after it.
While the main meat of the game is the combat, it felt lacking in some ways. Everyone feels good to use, and it takes a bit of practice to rein yourself in when doing combos. It can be hard to block or dodge on the fly while you're in the middle of an animation. All of the characters have their pros and cons. For example, Betty boasts amazing strength, but her inability to move unless you're possessing her means she can't help civilians if they're dying. Meanwhile, Edo can revive civilians and he's a powerhouse of a character, but he has a short reach and lacks ranged options. Choosing who you bring depends on personal preference until the latter stages, where you really want to have Julee with you.
But the main issue with the game is its repetitive nature. I already mentioned that the chase sequences are, but the combat can be, too. There aren't a lot of variations in combos or enemy types. While there are different Slitterhead forms, the optimal strategy really stays the same, no matter who you're using. Most of the game is parrying attacks and then getting your licks in. You may need to jump to a new body or stop and heal if you're HP is low, and then you repeat the above procedure. That's it. Even if you use long-ranged characters like Doni, you'll have to do the usual parry-attack-dodge dance because of how quickly Slitterheads can close the distance and the long cooldown time of active skills.
Differences between Slitterheads are pretty minor. Mantis Slitterheads are faster and more difficult to parry, for example. Later bosses have moves you can't parry and must dodge. They can down civilians too, so you might scramble a bit getting everyone up. But as a whole, what you have to do remains the same no matter who you're facing. So it can start to get monotonous. Yes, the game does throw you new challenges like needing to keep a certain amount of people alive per stage, but it's not hard to work around this limitation by either luring enemies away from the injured or with Julee. The game takes about twenty hours to complete if you take the time to look for collectibles or need to restart levels. So a little bit of variety to the enemies would've been nice.
Slitterhead was a bit of a mixed bag for me. After rewatching the gameplay trailer, I can say that what you see there is really accurate to what you're doing in the game proper. I also understand that Bokeh Game Studio encountered problems during development thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. When it came to this game in particular, I was more intrigued to see the story than the gameplay. After Silent Hill, Gravity Rush, and, yes, Siren, I had pretty high expectations for what kind of narrative Slitterhead would have. The story starts to become generic around the halfway point, and the ending felt like another fake-out. It almost feels incomplete, though I do admit that I'm still missing a few Hyoki Memories that might be key to fully comprehending it.
As someone who relies a lot of visuals to remember a story, I struggled at times to retain the finer details of Slitterhead. I understand the broad strokes of it and could give someone a synopsis of what it's about. However, I definitely need to sit and either sift through my collectibles or hunt more down to fully grasp stuff about characters like Night Owl and Yin Yue. The amount of text-only conversations would be fine on their own, but Slitterhead's time loop mechanic, as well as symbols to denote the alien language the Slitterheads and Night Owl use, became a little hard to follow. I do wonder if Bokeh Game Studio wanted a more visual archive like what was in Siren, but constraints during development prevented them from doing so.
If there's one thing I love about Slitterhead with no ifs or buts, it's Betty. Oh my goodness, do I love her. There's something about this put-together British lady who looks like Queen Elizabeth II, except she's also a tattooed berserker who laughs maniacally as she swings her bloody cane around. She is my queen. Other characters really can't compare. She especially stands out when next to Blake, who's the other Caucasian Rarity you can play as. Blake is a clown of a man, literally, and plays like a worse version of Alex. Doni, too, is a delight and I enjoyed both teasing him and spamming his Fatal Lance active skill. The characters are all fun, and I loved the very few times we got to see them interact with each other without Night Owl acting as some sort of proxy.
The thing about Slitterhead is that the main conceit of the possession mechanic is innovative. However, the story and one-note nature bog it down. Siren had a similar method of storytelling, in that it presented a comprehensible plot yet left enough things ambiguous that to this day, fans still discuss and debate on the finer details. The problem with Slitterhead, in my opinion, is that the story isn't so gripping that it would have that kind of impact on the playerbase. I do really enjoy how the game feels and I'm still excited for future projects from Bokeh Game Studio though. This was a really cool debut from the studio. Despite its cult classic status and passionate fanbase, Siren got pretty middling reviews from critics at launch, so time will tell if Slitterhead is exonerated in the same way.
Slitterhead will come out on November 8, 2024 for the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, and Windows PC.

Square Enix announced that the Final Fantasy XIV Dawntrail: The Art of Succession - Relics of Heritage art book will come with a Wind-Up Erenville Minion for FFXIV. The book debuts on April 29, 2025, and pre-orders are open through Amazon and the Square Enix Store. It will cost $39.99, which is the typical price for the MMORPG art books.
This will be a paperback art book that should cover things we encounter and see in FFXIV Dawntrail 7.0. The description specifically cited that it will begin to go over the new characters, both major and minor NPCs, we encountered in Tural. We'll see how some of the new locations and dungeons were designed, as well as bosses. New equipment designs will show up as well. These will be covered over 304 pages total.
Square Enix did tease some of the designs we'll see here. It showed off new art for classes like the Pictomancer on social media, as well as some spots in Tural.
And here's how the cover looks. It features members of the Scions of the Seventh Dawn, as well as Wuk Lamat.
As for the FFXIV Wind-Up Erenville Minion, it's a character you can equip in-game and have follow you around. It's common for Square Enix to include these with art books. For example, the one for the Endwalker expansion included Wind-Up Ragnarok.
Final Fantasy XIV is available for the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC. So is the Dawntrail expansion. The FFXIV Dawntrail: The Art of Succession - Relics of Heritage art book will debut on April 29, 2025.
