Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Wednesday, September 24, 2025 6:20 PM ![]() Sony and Housemarque's sci-fantasy shooter Saros got its first proper gameplay trailer at PlayStation's latest State of Play this evening. If you were hoping for more Returnal, then pour yourself a huge brimming flagon of victory mead, for this is basically Returnal plus a gruff male lead, a sunnier shape-shifting wasteland, and a force shield that converts attacks into juice for your biggest guns. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Wednesday, September 24, 2025 6:10 PM ![]() After four whole years of silence, PlayStation and Insomniac have very graciously offered up a new trailer for Marvel's Wolverine. With gameplay no less! Horrifically gruesome, violent, and bloody gameplay that is so intense you should probably give it 15 minutes or so if you've just had your supper. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Wednesday, September 24, 2025 5:36 PM ![]() Zero Parades is, if you ask its creators ZA/UM, a lot of things. It is an espionage CRPG. It is a character study of Hershel Wilk, the burnt-out, fallen-from-grace spook you'll be playing as. It is, as I'm told before being shown some very early footage of the game in motion, "a story about failure, and about crippling regret." It's also, quite nakedly, a Disco Elysium successor, perhaps the most overtly Disco-y in what's set to become a bizarrely crowded field. Some will like that, I imagine. But it's odd to see Zero Parades cling to the past, while so explicitly asking you to confront it. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Wednesday, September 24, 2025 4:52 PM ![]() I think my big problem with the proliferation of Soulslikes as a genre is twofold: one, that so many games get labelled as such despite not being such, and two, they're all much too similar. There might be mechanical differences, but there's no big thing that clearly sets them apart from what FromSoftware already does so well, not even an aesthetic overhaul. That's part of why I quite liked Lies of P, and why I'm curious if cautious about Valor Mortis. |

After opening a social media and YouTube account for its Animal Crossing style life sim Petit Planet ahead of TGS 2025, HoYoVerse actually revealed it and a Coziness Test closed beta at the event. Registration is now open on the official site for that. There's also a trailer offering a closer look at gameplay on custom planets.
Petit Planet can be played alone, though apparently multiplayer will be possible if you visit the Galactic Bazaar. Each person starts with their own planet that they develop. You set up homes, bring animal-like neighbors you can befriend to your place as Neighbors, and help the lands flourish by earning Luca through interactions. The first trailer also showed some activities like cooking, socializing, and crafting. There will also apparently be farming and fishing. Going to other places means hopping into a car that can travel from planet to planet throughout the galaxy.
Here's the full Petit Planet TGS 2025 gameplay trailer showing off the HoYoVerse life sim.
HoYoVerse noted the first Petit Planet Coziness Test closed beta will only be available on Windows PCs and iOS devices. We don't know when the registration survey will go offline, or when this test will run. If you get in, you can share impressions and footage. However, your progress will not be saved and carried over to the final release.
And there are also a handful of screenshots showing different elements. You can see them below:

Level-5 kicked off TGS 2025 with another game delay, as it announced Professor Layton and the New World of Steam is delayed out of 2025. It will now launch in 2026. It didn't have any exact release window or date ahead of this reveal. However, while it is now pushed back, the company did share a new trailer and confirm it is in the Future Division category in the Japan Game Awards.
This 2025 release window for Professor Layton and the New World of Steam first came up in November 2023, and it hadn't been delayed or changed until now. Still, we hadn't seen much of it prior to this latest trailer, and it wasn't discussed as frequently as other recent Level-5 releases like the already available Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time or upcoming Inazuma Eleven: Victory Road.
Meanwhile, the new TGS 2025 trailer is only available in Japanese now, with Luke Triton narrating it, and it shows the setting in America. It's an industrial city with steam-powered vehicles, and it features the same sepia tones as past entries. At about the 40 second mark, we see the more mature Luke alongside his mentor, Professor Hershel Layton. Mio Imada plays the student, while Yo Oizumi is the teacher. We see them interact with characters, move around town, talk to people, and go through some initial puzzles.
Here's the full trailer. English and Chinese subtitles will eventually be added.
Professor Layton and the New World of Steam will come to the Switch and Switch 2, and the game will be out sometime in 2026.

Nintendo shadowdropped a new Fire Emblem Shadows mobile spin-off game with Among Us social deduction and traitor elements as TGS 2025 began. It is immediately available on Google Play and the Apple App Store. It is free-to-play, but there are optional in-app purchases.
How it works is that for each run, three warriors go in. You choose if you are going to be on the side of light or darkness. Characters auto-battle, but you select which spells can be dropped. Friendly fire is available. The dark character is attempting to hide their role and make it to the end as the boss or defeat their allies, while light heroes need to find the traitor and defeat foes. If the light heroes successfully find the opponent, it means a boost when facing them as a boss.
Here is the first Fire Emblem Shadows trailer, which highlights some story elements and offers a brief teaser of gameplay for the mobile game that shows the Among Us style betrayals.
This is the second Fire Emblem mobile game that Nintendo released, as the first was the Heroes spin-off. That debuted in 2017 and celebrated its eighth anniversary back in February.
Fire Emblem Shadows is available for Android and Apple iOS mobile devices.

As part of the TGS 2025 State of Play showcase, Koei Tecmo shared a new trailer for Nioh 3 and announced that the game's release date is February 6, 2026. The trailer shows new details about the story, where protagonist Tokugawa Takechiyo will embark on a fight through time to defeat his brother Tokugawa Kunimatsu.
The trailer showcased the various periods of Japanese history that the game will take the players through, with these being the Heian period (1190 AD,) the Sengoku Era (1572 AD,) and the Edo period (1622 AD.) In fact, fans of the Nioh series will be able to recognize Hattori Hanzo in the trailer, a character that appeared on the first Nioh title as one of William Adams' allies.

Bandai Namco shared a Code Vein 2 release date during the TGS 2025 State of Play, as well as a new trailer for the game. The sequel will show up on the PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC on January 30, 2026. This falls in line with the confirmed 2026 release window that came up alongside the first announcement.
You can see the full trailer below. It starts by showing a dilapidated city and world being destroyed. We then learn that the goal is for our character and a Revenant named Lou Magmell to save the world they're currently in by heading into the past. The rest of the video tends to focus on battles and gameplay, though there are some cinematic elements that showcase some allies and villains. We also get a better idea of some of the attacks, environments, and enemies we'll get to face.

Square Enix shared its TGS 2025 merchandise page and it features a replica of Royal Magician Donald Duck's signature Mage's Staff from Kingdom Hearts. This isn't a life-size replica, as it looks far smaller in a human hand than it does when Donald holds it. However, it does light up. It will cost 9,900円 (~$67) and debut in Japan on January 24, 2026, and there's no worldwide release window for it yet.
This is about a 15 inch long wand (400mm), and it uses AAA batteries to light up. As with Donald Duck's actual weapon in Kingdom Hearts, the Mage's Staff references the classic Final Fantasy Black Mage job by looking like it has an oversized brown hat on top of a face hidden in shadows and wearing a blue robe. When a button is pressed, the blue "cloak" part of the wand lights up, which also makes the top of the hat glow too.
There's no video showing the item in action, but Square Enix did share a number of photos on the official product page that give us an idea of what it looks like when turned off, turned on, and held in someone's hand.

Finally, after just over four years since it was originally revealed, Marvel's Wolverine from Insomniac Games is back.
Following the massive hack of the Marvel's Spider-Man and Ratchet & Clank developer at the end of 2023, the studio is finally back, bub, and it's brought the indestructible, animalistic, Adamantium-clawed mutant back to the forefront of every gamer's mind.
In the new video that was just shown at State of Play, the future PS5 exclusive got a deep dive from Insomniac, detailing how Wolverine will be gory as hell. The trailer had plenty of slicing and dicing, and lots of cameos from other familiar characters like Mystique, Omega Red, and Sentinels. And lots, and lots, and lots of blood.
In a dev video, Insomniac revealed Australian actor Liam McIntyre as the voice of Wolverine. Beyond that, the devs promised more from the game will be shown in spring 2026, so sit tight a little bit longer, Marvel gamers.
Insomniac's next Marvel game following a trio of Spider-Man titles first debuted at the September 2021 PlayStation Showcase with a short teaser that did not show much. Before the dev was ready to show more, a huge data breach and targeted hack of the company revealed a slew of pre-alpha gameplay, footage, and story details, along with sensitive info like personal information about the developers.
The studio has spent the time since the breach recovering and working hard on Wolverine, and what we saw today at State of Play is the fruits of their labor. As one of the most trusted and reputable devs in the business, there was little doubt about the quality of Marvel's Wolverine, but this new footage has brought hype to new levels.

I was certainly not expecting a host of gameplay changes. EA Sports has promised to be more responsive this year, and it seems the team is firm on keeping their promise.

On paper, the changes seem great. There's no overreliance on using the AI, which has been a talking point over the last few years. You can expect better runs from your wingers with the new patch, while defense has also been improved with changes related to positioning. Moreover, the glitch of using Low Driven shots from certain angles should no longer remain the case.
There are some more changes that will be applicable for Ultimate Team and Career mode users. Some of the miscellaneous changes are also exclusively meant for PC users.
