Lost in Fantaland Still Needs Translation Work

Lost in Fantaland is a roguelike strategy game and deckbuilder that just made the leap to the Switch and, while it does feel like there's potential, it also feels a bit like it isn't 100% ready yet. The general mechanics seem sound! However the localization is unfortunately awkward, to the point it's distracting or some cards you collect might be a little unclear as to what they do. As a result, it might feel a little clunky and in need of a few patches.

Lost in Fantaland is an isekai story. In each run, your avatar is transported into Fantaland to act as its hero. Your goal is to go through various challenges leading up to bosses, surviving long enough to beat the Big Bad. Once that's done, the idea is you go through it again as someone else. Or, if you go through a run with the same job again, you can see a different outcome.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SNeRJNvF4FQ

The story in Lost in Fantaland is barely there. This normally wouldn't seem like a dealbreaker! The strategic roguelike Into the Breach isn't terribly story-heavy, yet remains compelling. However some of the elements here are a bit egregious. For example, the description on the eShop mentions "choose one of six unique characters." Except there aren't. What you do have are three character roles, which are Mage, Trickster, and Warrior. These are broken down into six total specializations spread across them. So the Warrior has the most, with the options being Berserker, Brave, and Starshield Knight. Once you get into the game, you'll read lines like "This looks like… a live stage in the wild," "why am I standing on a sweeping robot," and "sometimes we just get too excited to plan the route."

When the localization gets in the way of gameplay and understanding what we can do, it's not great! For example, you can choose a difficulty option that limits how far you can progress through the story. But instead of noting Soul Orbs determine character development, it refers to them as "the currency of growth." While that's obvious, cards with descriptions that read awkwardly can lead to bad choices. Charge Defense's says, "Gain 8 Armor. When playing, if the number of playing cards reaches 3, gain 1 AP next turn." Root Strike saying "Consume all MOVP and every MOVP consumed deals 4 damage" is a handy attack card, but if it comes up early you might not know that applies to movement. The space limitations mean that one like Throwing Knife isn't as clear as it could be, since it only mentions "Deal 8 damage to the target up to 3 grids away in a direction" and doesn't specify which directions are possible. The developer does seem aware of the situation, though a post on the Steam forum for it also admitted that AI translations were used in part initally.

It's a shame, as the foundation in Lost in Fantaland isn't bad. Each turn, you can move a limited number of spaces and have a set amount of AP you can spend on card actions. As the "hero" of Fantaland, you also have some mild precognitive abilities that allow you to determine if an enemy will attack or defend. The set roles determine your approach to fighting, with Mage of course being ranged and Warrior roles offering a melee, tank-type approach. Winning nets you more cards, and things like Artifacts and Items can influence your actions and survivability. Chapters involve selecting nodes on paths to proceed. Failure means a run is done. Standard roguelike, deckbuilder stuff.

Lost in Fantaland seems like its gameplay is rooted in fairly sound concepts, but it really needs a new localization or a fluent editor to go back through it. At best, it reads awkwardly and isn't interesting. At worst, it might cause someone to not realize a card could be beneficial at first glance or until a player actually uses it. Perhaps in a few patches it could be worth revisiting.

Lost in Fantaland is available on the Switch, PS5, and PC.

ARC Raiders PvE shooter trailer

ARC Raiders has a highly flexible skill tree system that allows you to develop fluid builds.

There's no fixed or rigid class-based system. Instead, you have to invest your skill points in three different branches. You can't unlock every node on the skill tree, which makes it essential for you to pay attention to how you're investing the points.

With enemy players to take down and ARC enemies on your heels, it's vital to go for a meta build.

ARC Raiders best builds

Every build in ARC Raiders has different strengths and weaknesses. Your priority should be towards using a build that suits your playstyle and requirements, but certain skills are too good to be left out. Keeping these factors in mind, here are some builds you can use.

Combat Specialist

With human and AI opponents to take down, investing a bulk of your points in combat is always a good choice. This build focuses on empowering your fighting potential, while also making you mobile in the heat of a battle.

Here's how I have invested the points.

Conditioning Mobility Survival
Used to the Weight 5 Nimble Climber 1 Agile Croucher 1
Blast-Born 2 Marathon Runner 4 Revitalizing Squat 5
Flight or Fight 5 Youthful Lungs 5 In-Round Crafting 1
Survivor's Stamina 1 Slip and Slide 4 Looter's Instinct 1
Downed but Determined 3 Sturdy Ankles 1 Silent Scavenger 1
Tutle Crawl 2 Carry the Momentum 1 N/A
Back on Your Feet 1 Calming Stroll 1 N/A
A Little Extra 1 Effortless Roll 3 N/A
Loaded Arms 1 HHeroic Leap 3 N/A
Gentle Pressure 5 Crawl Before You Walk 3 N/A
Proficient Pryer 5 Vigorous Vaulter 1 N/A
Unburned Roll 1 Off The Wall 1 N/A
Effortless Swing 2 N/A N/A
Sky-Clearing Swing 3 N/A N/A
Flyswatter 1 N/A N/A

The primary focus of the build is towards Back on Your Feet and Flyswatter. While Back on Your Feet and all the skills on that path allow you to recover better, Flyswatter allows you to single-hit ARC drones. The latter is beneficial to save bullets and quickly finish drone enemies.

Points have also been invested in Mobility nodes like Marathon Runner and Youthful Lungs for better stamina management (that works well with the melee-focused nature of this build). I have also made a few investments in the Survival nodes to ensure you can still loot quite safely.

Resource Rat

If your goal is to get as many resources as possible from the wasteland, this will be a fun and peculiar build for you to enjoy. The build relies heavily on Survival, where I have invested 51 of 75 skill points. The build revolves around Minesweeper and Security Breach skill nodes. The latter allows you to access Security Lockers. Here's how I have invested the points.

Conditioning Mobility Survival
Used to the Weight 1 Nimble Climber 2 Agile Croucher 5
Gentle pressure 1 Marathon Runner 5 Looter's Instinct 5
Proficient Pryer 5 Youthful Lungs 5 Silent Scavenger 5
N/A Slip and Slide 2 Suffer in Silence 1
N/A Sturdy Ankles 1 Broad Shoulders 5
N/A Carry the Momentum 1 Looter's Luck 1
N/A Calming Stroll 1 Security Breach 1
N/A N/A Revitalizing Squat 5
N/A N/A In-Round Crafting 1
N/A N/A Good as New 1
N/A N/A Traveling Tinkerer 1
N/A N/A One Raider's Scrap 1
N/A N/A Stubborn Mule 5
N/A N/A Three Deep Breaths 5
N/A N/A Minesweeper 1

I have also opted for full investment in both Marathon Runners and Iron Lungs since you're going to require the additional stamina. Since you aim to loot as much as possible, having full investment in Proficient Pryer reduces the time taken to open and get more items.

The Solo King (or Queen)

If you're playing ARC Raiders all by your own, you'll have to pay the most amount of attention to your build. I have opted for a setup that excels in all three departments (as you have to do it all on your own).

Note: The build is in work.

Best solo build in ARC Raiders
Remix by Destructoid via Metaforge

Here's how I have distributed the points.

Conitioning Mobility Survival
Used to the Weight 1 Nmble Climber 1 AAgile Croucher 3
Gentle Pressure 1 Marathon Runner 5 Revitalizing Squat 5
Proficient Pryer 5 Youthful Lungs 4 In-Round Crafting 1
N/A Slip and Slide: 3 Looter's Instinct 1
N/A Sturdy Ankles: 1 Silent Scavenger 5
N/A Calming Stroll: 1 Suffer in Silence 1
N/A Carry the Momentum: 1 Traveling Tinkerer 1
N/A N/A Broad Shoulders 4
N/A N/A Looter's Luck 4
N/A N/A Good as New 1

The aim here is to have as many active basic nodes as possible, but with an emphasis on Survival and Mobility. With this build, you can also opt for only one final node, and that should be towards Security Breach.

While the build isn't as specialized as the other two options above, it removes any limitation that you might have. I will be updating a complete build for this one once I have finished experimenting with the more advanced nodes.

Field Depot in ARC Raiders

ARC Raiders has plenty of items for you to loot, and Rusted Tools can easily fly below the radar if you don't know where to look.

Rusted Tools' biggest use is to unlock the Gunsmith 2 upgrade for your Workshop, but they also have other uses inside the game. This guide will help you find the item and pinpoint strategies for efficient farming.

How to find Rusted Tools in ARC Raiders

As of writing, I have yet to find a spot that feels like an efficient farming spot for Rusted Tool. However, you can find them on every map in ARC Raiders from the mechanical loot pools. In case you're unaware, every map has one of the four themes, and it will be displayed across your HUD. You'll want to be in an area that's tagged as Mechanical.

I have marked locations on the Blue Gate map in the screenshot above. Precisely, you'll want to be looking for the buildings and areas marked with the Mechanical tag.

Once you're at the right spot, start opening the containers you see around. Obtaining Rusted Pools eventually depends on luck, and its spawn rate is lower (since it's a Rare loot). You'll also want to be careful if you're playing solo, since opening the containers will create noise and can attract enemy attention.

How to use Rusted Tools in ARC Raiders

The primary use of Rusted Tools is to get the Gunsmith 2 upgrade from your Workshop. Here's the complete list of items you'll need for the upgrade.

You can also sell Rusted Tools for 1000 coins apiece. You can also salvage or recycle Rusted Tools to get the following items.

  • 8 Metal Parts and 1 Steel Spring (from recycling)
  • 7 Metal Parts (from Salvage)

Do note that Rusted Tools is typically a heavy item, so you'll need to pay attention to its weight if your inventory is about to reach its maximum capacity.
