Preview: Octopath Traveler 0 Feels Even More Freeform

The Octopath Traveler series always offered us quite a bit of freedom, as we'd be able to pursue past games' stories in any order we'd want, recruit in different orders, and often get pretty much total access to the map right away. After spending a few hours to preview Octopath Traveler 0, I feel like it goes even further to give the player freedom to experience the game how they'd like and pursue their own priorities.

This starts from the moment someone picks up Octopath Traveler 0, as during the preview session I felt like I spent way more time than I expected in the character creator. We determine things like our character's body type, hair style, skin tone, eye color, hair color, initial skill preference, starting items, and favorite food with buff. While I didn't pick an initial job until after the events of the prologue, it felt like I could start considering a specific build already, especially if I considered grabbing the early healing skill or a favorite food that would heal and boost critical rate.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=klKrQZXDWkI

Octopath Traveler 0 starts with one of the more detailed "villains burned down our town" type of stories. Our avatar's father is head of the Wishvale watch and trained us in order to ensure we'd be able to assist in keeping everyone safe. As we prepare for the yearly Enkindling festival, an Order of the Sacred Flame church-led affair which will sound familiar to those who played past games, there are hints that the villains Commander Tytos, Lady Herminia, and Auguste will converge on the town to claim a mysterious ring. This leads to it being burned, with our hero and their childhood friend Stia as the only survivors staying with a nearby scholar and hermit who lived outside of town.

But while the prologue is a more regimented and short introductory "chapter," it feels like the rest of the time I spent playing Octopath Traveler 0 for the preview featured a game that might encourage us to do what we want, when we want, as we walk our own course throughout the country. After taking shelter with the scholar, we can then make additional choices confirming our first job. (I went with a Thief.) After confirming that we want to assist Stia in rebuilding Wishvale, we also get a chance to pursue our "goal." This determines which of the three storylines we start. Fame corresponds to Auguste, Power to Tytos, and Wealth to Herminia. Now, this doesn't completely lock us out of other stories, as the game assures. It just sets our initial path. When we look at the world map, we can even see where the first chapters of the other two routes are. It's also possible to see where some sidequests are and fast travel. Following that, Stia also suggests that hey, prioritizing the town can also be an option.

This means that things open up in a way that makes me believe Square Enix and the Octopath Traveler 0 team is quite aware of how people played the previous two mainline games. The world map isn't extremely detailed, but seems to offer a solid overview of where everything is. For folks focused on town growth and those sidequests, the minimap shows where materials can be collected and recruiting some of the earliest newcomers seemed fairly simple to do, mechanically. Some Path Actions, like the option to investigate, not being locked to a single class for our avatar is helpful for early information gathering. If I did decide to prioritize a main campaign quest, then sometimes I'd happen upon town-building quests and ingredients for them along the way.

Now, I didn't get too deep into Octopath Traveler 0 during my preview session and don't want to spoil any of the story elements I did see. But I will say that it seemed like my own survivability was the only thing holding me back in some of these early hours. Some of the early enemies even in the prologue required quite a bit of thought, and as we first start to journey around Orsterra, I found the suggestions letting me know about enemy strength before heading into certain areas were most valuable in determining if I'd risk that journey. Since it still relies on set save points, discretion and caution felt like some of the main limitations early on. Especially as, for at least our first steps into each storyline's first chapter, we'll be limited to only our avatar and Stia.

My first hours playing Octopath Traveler 0 for this preview felt encouraging. The earliest moments feel like it's designed to feel like a more meaningful take on the "villain burns down hometown" trope. And once that's done, it feels like it the game follows the Octopath Traveler staple of sending us out into the world to make a difference at our own pace. In some ways, only the difficulty of enemies kept me from venturing too far off the beaten path during these early hours.

Octopath Traveler 0 will come to the Switch, Switch 2, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC on December 4, 2025.

Octopath Traveler 0 Demo

Square Enix announced that everyone can get a chance to test out Octopath Traveler 0 with a free demo. It will be available on November 11, 2025 following the State of Play Japan 2025 showcase

There are some limitations to the Octopath Traveler 0 demo. The first is that you can't play for that long. You are limited to three total hours. This should be enough time to get through the introduction and start on your quest for revenge against Auguste, Herminia, and Tyto, the three tyrants who burned down the main character's hometown in the name of fame, wealth, and power. It also means you only get to go through the initial slices of the game. However, this will contain the full character creator and allow someone to make a save file that can carry over to the full title.

Here's the new story trailer that also announced the demo release:

Octopath Traveler 0 will come to the Switch, Switch 2, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC on December 4, 2025, and a demo will be available on November 11, 2025.

Dragon Quest VII Reimagined Includes Older Kiefer

A new Dragon Quest VII Reimagined trailer showed up during the State of Play Japan 2025 showcase, and it showed a new version of the returning hero Kiefer. He's an ally of the party in the game, and this time it seems both the young version we meet at the outset and an older version of him will fight at our side.

The full trailer for Dragon Quest VII Reimagined only brings up the new Kiefer section at the 45 second mark. The hero, Maribel, and Ruff come upon an older gentleman tied up to a post. He then recognizes the party. We learn this is then a different version of Kiefer that they've run into on their travels. Once freed, it seems like we'll get a chance to fight alongside him again.

You can see that video below:

This is only one of the new scenarios and elements added for this entry. As a reminder, there will be a number of additions. While some are story-related, like this, others change the appearance of things or add quality-of-life adjustments.

See FFVII Ever Crisis x FFXIII Aerith and Tifa Lightning Concept Art

During the FFVII Ever Crisis FFXIII event, Square Enix shared two images that offer a closer look at the Guardian Corps Uniform costumes inspired by Lightning for Aerith and Tifa. Each one is available via an ongoing gacha banner tied to the event.

Here are the two pieces of Guardian Corps Uniform Aerith and Tifa gear concept art Square Enix shared alongside the FFXIII event in FFVII Ever Crisis. Both are near identical replicas of the outfit Lightning wears in the first game in that trilogy. Each image also notes that the heroines' hairstyles are altered to greater resemble Lightning's, so they feature a gradation to pink and appear in a ponytail or braid over the character's left shoulder.

In addition to this concept art, Square Enix shared a new trailer tied to the event. It shows what the Lightning boss fight in the game looks like. Her Chain Gauge mechanic returns to it, and she also can summon Odin as she did in the original FFXIII games.

https://twitter.com/FFVII_EC_EN/status/1987731943266652346

In addition to Aerith and Tifa getting FFXIII Lightning costumes, Cloud and Glenn got ones inspired by Lightning Returns: FFXIII. Cloud's looks like her Equilibrium armor, while Glenn's is based on Snow.

Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis is available on PCs and mobile devices, and the FFXIII crossover will be in the FFVII spin-offuntil November 27, 2025.

A Holofoil version of the Romantic Death grenade launcher in Destiny 2, with a glow reminiscent of camouflage.

Some people's first thought when hearing "romantic death" would be Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, but Destiny 2 players who have been grinding the Call To Arms event for god rolls may think of something else: the game's new Void-aligned grenade launcher.

Romantic Death first surfaced briefly during the Reclaim: New Territories event in Ash & Iron in September, but the game's developer is giving players another chance to grab this weapon (and other goodies) until Nov. 25.

The Call to Arms grenade launcher is a Wave Frame, so don't expect it to replace a well-rolled VS Velocity Baton. But, as anyone who's used a Forbearance will tell you, a Wave Frame can be deadly in the right circumstances. Here are our PvE god rolls for Romantic Death in Destiny 2, based on the perk list on light.gg.

Romantic Death PvE god rolls in Destiny 2

If you can't get a Holofoil, there's a chance to grab a T5 instead. Screenshot by Destructoid

  • Launcher: Volatile Launch, Linear Compensator, or Quick Launch
  • Mag: High-Velocity Rounds
  • First perk: Repulsor Brace, Proximity Power, Feeding Frenzy, or Stats For All
  • Second perk: Destabilizing Rounds, Chain Reaction, or One For All

Repulsor Brace and Destabilizing Rounds is a tried-and-true Void combo. It's hard to go wrong with it, especially in a weapon with area-based damage. This pairing gives you free overshields in any subclass, so you don't need to be on Void to benefit from it. Repulsor Brace may be good enough by itself if you're using the purple element, however, leaving another perk open to your preference.

Since Romantic Death is a single-shot grenade launcher, having reload-boosting perks is key if you're not using that slot for specific buildcrafting needs, such as Repulsor Brace (for Void) or Proximity Power for melee energy. In that case, Feeding Frenzy is a good kill-based perk with a hefty buff to reload speed, and the grenade launcher's area of effect can get multiple kills with one pull of the trigger. Chain Reaction is still pretty strong despite its nerf in The Final Shape, so this perk also features in our god roll.

Stats For All also works for that purpose, but it gets even better with another perk combination. It's easy to hit three targets within quick succession, so One For All is king in that department. The existence of Stats For All in the third column is no coincidence, either, so take advantage of that combo if you want bigger numbers.

Alternatively, for melee builds who are in the thick of combat, Proximity Power improves your melee stat after killing an enemy within 15 meters. If you're going that route, you may also keep a roll with Surrounded for more damage, though we'd probably recommend One For All as a safer option. Aggregate Charge may also work in some scenarios, but that wouldn't be our first pick either.

How to get Romantic Death in Destiny 2

While previously part of the New Territories: Reclaim event early into Ash & Iron, Romantic Death is now available as part of the Call To Arms event. This end-of-season extravaganza runs until Nov. 25, and it's unclear how (or if) Bungie plans to make Romantic Death available after that.

A guardian holds Mint Retrograde in front of the pink rocks in Kepler's Caldera.

The suspense has ended for Destiny 2 fans who were worried about their beloved Mint Retrogrades. Rocket Pulses are getting a nerf in Renegades, Bungie confirmed today, but the archetype will maintain its devastating damage potential with a reduction to their ammo efficiency.

Bungie will "let it [Mint Retrograde] keep its power on the battlefield," but adjust the archetype's ammo uptime by "reducing reserves and the amount of ammo acquired per enhanced brick slightly," the studio said in today's Dev Insights post.

The archetype's total reserves dropped to 14 (down from 18), and ammo bricks will award fewer bullets (up to five with an enhanced brick). This will also apply to a new rocket pulse coming in Renegades, Bungie confirmed, but it's unclear if New Malpais will suffer from the change as well.

The Mint Retrograde pulse rifle in Destiny 2, which uses the same model as the Hailing Confusion pulse rifle from Europa.
Not a bad outcome at all. Screenshot by Destructoid

This nerf doesn't dilute the firepower of Mint Retrograde, but it can affect another of their big strengths: ammo economy. Slashing max reserves means players have fewer shots per damage phase, and even using this archetype in general play can require more parsimony with your ammo.

As part of another change in Renegades, Bungie is bringing back the Ammo Scout mods and including more actions that raise your ammo meter, such as getting assists with abilities. Players can offset the nerfs to ammo economy, developers said, though it may require some changes to buildcrafting, such as Scout or Scavenger mods.

If you've played Edge of Fate, Mint Retrograde's supremacy isn't exactly shocking. This Legendary rocket pulse is present "around 45 percent of the time," the dev blog said, so you're far from being the only one with it glued to your Kinetic slot. While the nerf to this weapon was among the concerns for Renegades, it seems rocket pulses are coming into the next expansion in decent shape—though developers will monitor how the community receives the change.

It's hard to find a weapon to compete with Mint Retrograde in the current sandbox, especially with pulse rifles getting Anti-Barrier this season. Renegades' artifact might also work in tandem with the ammo nerf to help push Mint Retrograde out of its near-ubiquitous status.

While details about Mint Retrograde's fate were arguably the most anticipated news from Renegades, players will also see tuning to a myriad of Exotics and weapon families. Osteo Striga and Witherhoard in particular will see reversions to nerfs that tanked their effectiveness, and other forlorn iconic weapons such as Ace of Spades, Hawkmoon, and Touch of Malice will also get some much-needed buffs when the next expansion lands on Dec. 2.

The post Destiny 2's Mint Retrograde will still hit like a truck in Renegades, but with one nerf appeared first on Destructoid.

BO7 multiplayer camos

We're just days away from the latest Call of Duty release, and Activision has reiterated its stance on one of the franchise's most controversial features ahead of launch.

During Black Ops 7's beta last month, Treyarch and Activision finally pulled the plug on the heavy-handed skill-based matchmaking in public playlists that have been a paint point in the series for the last five years. And it went over so well with players that it's staying in the game for good.

BO7 Express multiplayer
Image via Activision

"Thanks to your beta feedback, the majority of Black Ops 7's multiplayer playlists will have Open matchmaking, which will be similar to the beta experience where skill is minimally considered," Treyarch announced today.

However, SBMM isn't going away for good. Treyarch said that there will be a "Closed Matchmaking" rotating moshpit playlist at launch "where skill will be an important consideration, and Ranked Play will also use skill as an important consideration when it launches" early in 2026.

In addition to this great news, BO7 will also have persistent lobbies instead of breaking up every lobby after each game as CoD has done over the past few releases. Both of these concerns have been big complaints among the playerbase since 2019, so to see the changes finally being made, it has gone over very well with CoD gamers.

With the reduced SBMM in the beta, BO7 felt like a different game compared to most recent releases, in the best way. The lobbies felt more like a crap shoot as to what kind of players you match with and against, as opposed to actively being punished for performing well. And even better, the connections felt great and matchmaking queues would pop very quickly.

For now, I have to admit that I'm slightly concerned that the announcement is worded carefully to say that the SBMM "will be similar to the beta experience," and not just a one-to-one. But I'm optimistic.

If BO7's multiplayer can feel like this for good, then we may be in for one of the better CoD titles in recent years from a multiplayer standpoint. Coupled with campaign, Zombies, and the new Endgame co-op mode, it could be a good year for CoD fans.

Industrial Batteries in ARC Raiders

Industrial Batteries are an essential item to find if you're looking to upgrade the Gear Bench in ARC Raiders.

This item spawns in different locations across all four maps, but finding them can be hectic. This guide will describe the best locations from which you can potentially find Industrial Batteries.

Best Industrial Batteries location in ARC Raiders

I have been looking pretty hard for this particular item since it's necessary for upgrading the Gear Bench to level 2 and level 3. You can find them spawning randomly from any industrial-themed region. I have had the most success from the Dam Battlegrounds map.

There are two specific locations that you'll want to visit: Hydroponic Dome Complex and Power Generation Complex. I have marked their locations, and the Power Generation Complex has been my favorite. I have also managed to find the Power Rod from this building, which is mandatory to complete Tribute to Toledo.

The Hydroponic Dome Complex is also worth a visit if you didn't find any luck in the Power Generation Complex region.

You can also find Industrial Batteries from the Spaceport and Blue Gate maps. On Spaceport, you'll have to visit the Rocket Assembly building. This area has plenty of ARC enemies, so you'll need to be extremely careful.

Industrial Batteries location on Spaceport

On Blue Gate, you'll want to visit the Warehouse. This is a mid-tier loot area, so you'll have to be extremely cautious. I have found some dangerous ARC enemies and human players alike.

Out of all three locations, Dam Battlegrounds is my top choice, followed by Blue Gate and Spaceport. You'll need Industrial Batteries for both Gear Bench upgrades, and I would advise putting them in your safe pocket in case you're unable to extract successfully.
