Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, January 15, 2026 10:46 AM I only have to skate a few meters before the piercing drum of rifle fire fills my ears. Armed with my trusty can of spray paint, I cover the hostile soldiers in splotches of bright colour while rollerblading circles around them. They stumble about, trying to keep me in their sights. Stopping to complete an unfinished bit of graffiti on one of the walls, spreading colour between gaps in a template, the soldiers gather around me. Unable to target me, they mill about in the way as I try to finish, making it a touch more difficult to work out if I've left any blank spaces. I'm playing an early version of Palestine Skating Game, which offers a test of its Jet Set Radio and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater-inspired rollerblading and painting amid a stylised rendition of war-torn Gaza. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, January 15, 2026 8:05 AM "Last year was a hard year for the studio," Elder Scrolls Online's executive producer Susan Kath says. "It was a hard year for all of us." In 2025, as part of sweeping cuts made across all their businesses, Microsoft laid off a significant chunk of Zenimax Online Studios. They did this despite CEO Satya Nadella later calling the year one of "record performance", with revenue up 15% and hitting $281.7 billion. So, last week, when Zenimax Online Studios revealed it was moving from releasing major expansions every 12 - 18 months to smaller, more frequent updates every three months, it looked very much like the team could no longer manage those big releases. Kath tells me that reading of events is wrong. |

Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, January 15, 2026 7:27 AM LinkedIn today is a terrible den of web3+ grifters, obsolete CVs, frog-boiling pressure to buy a subscription, and scurrilous journalists hunting for leaks in job listings. But every now and then it comes good. For example, there's a discussion underway between various senior developers, including current and former staff of Remedy, Ubisoft and Naughty Dog, about the causes of crunch, aka ruinous overwork. There's a pervading atmosphere of former triple-A blokes warming up their soapboxes for a GDC talk down the line, and a certain amount of insider jargon about "pipelines" and so forth – somebody should probably do a piece on the etymology of "pipelines" in software development. But it's otherwise a useful chat. There is minimal indulgence of the old saw about crunch being unavoidable because 'passionate' creative people are inherently prone to burning themselves out. The emphasis is on crunch as a structural phenomenon. |

Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, January 15, 2026 5:57 AM There are two blue wolves inside you. One is actually a hedgehog, prone to loop-the-loops and drowning in caves. The other one is actually a dolphin, who is also prone to loop-the-loops and drowning in caves. Clarification: when I said you I meant me. I'm referring to my own squalid psychological architecture as a Sega Mega Drive player with vivid memories of Sonic the Hedgehog (especially the Star Light Zone) and Ecco the Dolphin. While Sega's pugnacious pinball mascot continues to star in videogames of all flavours, poor Ecco has been absent from screens since the early noughties. No longer: this year shall be the year of Ecco. Developers A&R Atelier – whose members include the character's original creator, Ed Annunziata – have declared that they are working on "several" new Ecco things, including a videogame. No, I won't accommodate any criticism of my framing here. If we can have a year of Luigi and a year of Shadow, we can have a year of Ecco. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, January 15, 2026 5:52 AM You might be aware of the great Disco thrupening, or quadrupening depending on how you classify things. Over the past couple of years, a number of new studios have loudly hoovered up various ex-Disco Elysium devs following internal conflict at ZA/UM, and announced games that aim to rebottle the RPG's lightning. One such studio is Londgue, who recently told me their partially-crowdfunded RPG called Hopetown now has a playable intro, despite quietly switching narrative leads last year. |

Capcom announced that there will be a new run of Mega Man Fingertip Mega Busters based on various weapons from the series. There are five options total available in this first collection. The Japanese Good Smile Company website is taking orders for a box of six that is guaranteed to include all five of the capsule machine toy designs for ¥3,300 (~$19), but it isn't showing up on any other sites to order yet. It ships in March 2026.
As the name suggests, each of the Mega Man Fingertip Mega Buster items can actually fit on someone's finger. They are each about two and a half inches long. They all have an LED light. Each one also has a ball chain attached to use as a keychain or decorative accessory.
All five of the designs are based on weapons that Mega Man can pick up throughout the games. Here's what we can get, and I also noted each character it is associated with.
And here are official images showing how each one looks.
In the past, we've seen Capcom use the Mega Buster as inspiration for other merchandise. For example, one time there was a cushion that looked like it. The Mega Man: Fully Charged lab playset was also shaped like the weapon.
The Mega Man Fingertip Mega Busters will show up in Japan in March 2026, and it's unknown if we'll see them officially sold worldwide anywhere yet.

Square Enix confirmed that there will be parity across all Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade versions on January 22, 2026, as the PS5 and PC FFVII releases will get the Streamlined Progression patch the same day. Square Enix confirmed on social media it will be available everywhere the day the game launches on the Switch 2 and Xbox Series X. This will apply to in-progress and new games.
We do already know what the Streamlined Progression in the FFVII Remake Intergrade Switch 2, Xbox Series X, PS5, and PC versions will entail. Square Enix shared screenshots back in September 2025 that went over everything. The head start options are available in the general Options menu between the Gameplay and Camera & Controls settings. People can enable or disable an array of different elements.
Here's a list of the confirmed Streamlined Progression elements in the JRPG:
Each one of these can be enabled or disabled, so someone can tailor the experience to their own needs or eliminate the grind while still keeping the challenge.
Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade will appear on the Switch 2 and Xbox Series X on January 22, 2026, and the PS5 and PC versions of FFVII will get a Streamlined Progression patch that same day. A demo is available. The game originally appeared on the PS4, which isn't getting this latest patch.

Kouji Okada, Compile Heart, and Idea Factory announced a new school RPG is in development. The game will be fully revealed and announced on January 29, 2026. A brief teaser trailer is on YouTube, a Japanese social media account is open, and a website is live. However, we don't know the title or platforms for it yet.
Here's the first trailer for this new school RPG from Okada, Compile Heart, and Idea Factory. A number of scientific and supernatural images flash past. For example, references to DNA include "genome," "ATGC," and the CRISPR DNA sequences that protect against bacteriophages and viruses. "Adhvan" from Hinduism also comes up. There are also hints as to the school and environments we might explore and perhaps a protagonist's eye shown. Folks involved in its development, like the Atlus co-founder, come up too.
As for the staff so far, that also appears on the official site. People tied to the game are Kouji Okada as producer, Tadashi Satomi as scenario writer, Tsukasa Masuko as composer, and Ilya Kuvshinov as a character designer. Many of them were tied to Shin Megami Tensei and Persona games in the past.
The new school RPG from Compile Heart and Idea Factory is in development and will be fully revealed on January 29, 2026.

Bandai Namco Filmworks has published plans to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the anime studio Sunrise, which will fall in 2027. One of the new projects will be Armored Trooper Votoms: Die Graue Hexe, a new anime show that will launch in 2026 with Mamoru Oshii as its director. Production I.G., of Ghost in the Shell fame, will also help Sunrise produce the new title.
Die Graue Hexe, which means "The Gray Witch" in German, will add a new story to the series that premiered on Japanese television in 1983. The latest anime adaptation of the series prior to this announcement was Armored Trooper Votoms: Chirico's Return, which appeared as a single OVA episode in 2011.
Sunrise has also published the first trailer for the new Votoms show on Bandai Namco Filmworks' YouTube channel:
The Sunrise studio formally debuted with the launch of Invincible Super Man Zambot 3 in October 1977. Bandai Namco Filmworks announced that it will celebrate the studio's 50th anniversary throughout the three years surrounding the exact anniversary year in 2027, from 2026 to 2028. Other than Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway: The Sorcery of Nymph Circe, Sunrise is also known to be working on a brand-new Macross anime show as of early 2026.
Armored Trooper Votoms: Die Graue Hexe will air in 2026.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails Beyond the Horizon is now available worldwide, and mastering the combat system should be high on your agenda.
Like previous chapters in the saga, you'll be relying on turn-based combat. However, a real-time system is also available, and you can mix the two to get an edge over your enemies.
Table of contents
The Legend of Heroes: Trails Beyond the Horizon Field Battle explained
The Field Battle is the real-time mechanic that allows you to use different abilities. The more abilities you unlock, the more choices you can enjoy during a battle. You can also dodge incoming attacks, and there won't be any restrictions on your movement.
This method is ideal against weaker enemies or swarms.
The Legend of Heroes: Trails Beyond the Horizon Command Battle explained
This is the classic turn-based method that will be applicable when you're facing bigger enemies or bosses. While you can still move around, the scope is relatively low. You can activate this mode using the R button (or X/Square on your controller).
In this method, you have to line up your spells for them to do damage. While I love the Command Battle system, it will take a longer time to master. You'll also have to anticipate the enemy's movements to do maximum damage.
Irrespective of your chosen method, all spells and abilities will consume CP, so try not spam the heavy damage options repeatedly.
All The Legend of Heroes: Trails Beyond the Horizon battle mechanics
There are different mechanics you have to understand in combat (irrespective of which system you're using).

Dreadmyst has different ways of upgrading your gear, and one of them involves socketing various gems that you find on your adventures.
You'll find gems of different categories throughout the course of your adventures. Once you find them, you'll be able to socket them on your gear to provide different stat boosts. This guide will explain the complete process so that you can get your gear score to the highest level possible.
Table of contents
All gem tiers in Dreadmyst
Gems can be categorized into three different tiers in Dreadmyst. Every gem, irrespective of its rarity, will provide a bonus to one of your five core skills. The bonus, of course, will depend on the rarity (quality) of your gem.
Low Tier Gems (+1 Bonus)
Mid Tier Gems (+2 Bonus)
High Tier Gems (+3 Bonus)
How to equip and remove gems in Dreadmyst
The process of equipping gems into gear is pretty simple. You can add them as long as there's an empty slot. However, you can also make an error in the process. You can accidentally equip a gem in the wrong slot. For example, equipping a Refined Ruby in a slot meant for Courage won't provide you with any boost.
If that happens, you'll need to remove the gem using the Shatter Gems item. This item can be obtained by completing The Arena quest. You can complete this quest multiple times by playing in PvP. Once activated, the Shatter Gems item will automatically remove all socketed gems. Removal of a gem also destroys it permanently.
Additionally, there's an element of failure associated with the socketing process. The exact odds are a secret, but attempting to socket a gem won't be guaranteed. The odds of failure also go up when you're trying to equip higher-tier gems.
