PCGamesN Tuesday, October 1, 2024 3:45 PM When videogames are described as being 'like anime,' it usually conjures up images of licensed fighting games along the lines of Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, visual novels such as Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc, or RPG games like Persona 3 Reload, Metaphor: ReFantazio, and Genshin Impact. There are plenty of other genres of Japanese animation to draw inspiration from, though, especially film and TV shows that portray space combat between sci-fi fighter jets. It's this type of animated action that serves as inspiration for Rogue Flight, a newly announced aerial combat game in the vein of Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown or Starfox. |
PCGamesN Tuesday, October 1, 2024 2:55 PM The throwback approach to RPG game design has been responsible for some of the best games to appear in recent years. A huge highlight in 2023 was Baldur's Gate 3, which resurrected a classic series with a fresh new entry. Before it, there was also the broader CRPG revival, with games like Pillars of Eternity, Wasteland 3, and Tyranny arriving to show the staying power of an older approach to RPG design. As of this week, another retro-style role-playing adventure called Banquet for Fools has arrived to continue this trend with striking visuals and inventive design. PCGamesN Tuesday, October 1, 2024 12:44 PM Which League of Legends skins are currently on sale in the store? LoL is a free-to-play game in the truest sense - you can enjoy everything the MOBA offers for absolutely nothing. Now if you were to ask a seasoned League player if that were true, they'd probably have to stifle a few tears as they check how much their bank account has suffered buying skins since they started battling on the Rift. Riot rotates a series of skins in the store, with the savviest of us holding out until the cosmetic they want ends up in the discount section store or even the League of Legends Mythic shop. The shiny new cosmetics are only available briefly, so act fast if you want to snag the new hotness. PCGamesN Tuesday, October 1, 2024 12:26 PM I love things that are set in the cosmos, just give me a spaceship and I'm happy. That said, I don't think I'd like to actually let slip the surly bonds of Earth and touch the face of god, as you have all the negatives of being in a submarine with the added threat of not being able to pop a hatch open should things go wrong. PCGamesN Tuesday, October 1, 2024 12:32 PM With new X870 and X870E motherboards launching this week for AMD CPUs, there are plenty of dry specs to get through. Motherboard manufacturer Asus, however, has gone down a different path to show off the potential of its next-gen motherboards by breaking five different overclocking records, pushing an AMD Ryzen 9 9950X CPU to a staggering 7.55GHz clock speed. To put that into perspective, the Ryzen 9 9950X has a typical clock speed of 4.3GHz and a boost clock speed of 5.7GHz. It's already the fastest AMD processor you can buy, and arguably one of the best gaming CPUs out there right now. With a 1.85GHz overclock applied using this brand-new Asus motherboard, this 9950X is stomping well ahead of its stock performance. PCGamesN Tuesday, October 1, 2024 12:24 PM There's been a great crop of minimalist strategy games recently. One of this year's best entries to the genre, for example, is Thronefall, which boils city building and tower defense down to their essence. There are also similar approaches to find in everything from Dorfromantik and Bad North to Mini Metro. Now, another game created in this vein has been announced through Monarchy, an approachable side-scrolling strategy game that looks to have taken clear inspiration from the Kingdom series. |
PCGamesN Tuesday, October 1, 2024 12:22 PM What's on sale in the League of Legends Mythic shop? New skins for LoL are released all the time, with a new event arriving on the Rift every few weeks, but what happens if you missed the boat with that awesome KD/A Evelynn skin, or if you've seen a Hextech skin in a game of Summoner's Rift and want to bag it for yourself? The Mythic shop is a special storefront in the free PC game that stocks rare skins, wards, chromas, and essence. These cosmetic items aren't available for real-world money, either, as they can only be purchased with Mythic Essence, so no more worrying about how much you've spent in League of Legends. The stock held in this store is rotated regularly, with some skins becoming unavailable for months, so it's best to keep up to date on what's on sale in the League of Legends Mythic store. Many start out small, and through updates, DLC, or expansions become something entirely different. Age of Wonders 4 is a game on that journey and while already one of the best strategy titles of 2023, is getting even better with four pieces of new DLC on the horizon thanks to a new expansion pass. PCGamesN Tuesday, October 1, 2024 11:32 AM There was a time when movie tie-in games had no right being so good. Fighting a comic-accurate Sentinel in the X-Men Origins: Wolverine game, exploring the dank corners of Skull Island in Peter Jackson's King Kong, and going toe-to-toe with humanoid ants in The Matrix: Path of Neo. We had a moment where tie-in games didn't just match the source material, they often exceeded it. Those days are gone, but we might just get them back. A new label from inside Devolver Digital, the publisher of indie hits like Enter the Gungeon and Cult of the Lamb, has arrived with one goal: to help indie developers make more licensed tie-in games. PCGamesN Tuesday, October 1, 2024 11:29 AM If you're planning on dipping into Amazon's new free-to-play MMORPG, Throne and Liberty, you'll have the best experience if using an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4000 graphics card. The inclusion of DLSS 3 Super Resolution and Frame Generation will boost performance substantially at all resolutions, leaving all other graphics cards playing second fiddle. I tested Throne and Libery recently on an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070, and it's safe to say that performance is incredible with DLSS 3 enabled. While there were some initial wobbles while the shaders were installed, which took longer than I would have liked, the rest of my time with the game was exceptional from a performance perspective. DnD games on PC have also been a long-standing presence since Pool of Radiance in 1988. PCGamesN Tuesday, October 1, 2024 11:01 AM What are the best indie games? The great indie boom triggered by digital distribution a decade ago turned out to be more of a Big Bang, firing small-team development into a plethora of directions that now defy simple categorisation. The sheer volume is intimidating, so we have plenty to choose from when compiling our list of the best indie games. Perhaps too much. But we should take stock, from time to time, to appreciate everything publisher-less development has given us. Some of the games listed below were built in a weekend by first-time coders, while others were crafted by former triple-A creators who've instilled their independent work with the same technical standards. They barely have anything in common but a healthy dose of idiosyncrasy and ideas that make Steam worth spelunking and make our list of the best PC games. PCGamesN Tuesday, October 1, 2024 11:02 AM What are the best Minecraft texture packs? These colorful and game-altering texture packs can make your world a new experience. Of course, Minecraft's low-fi charm is part of the draw, but texture packs range from subtle changes to an all-over reskin, so you can choose just how much you want to leave vanilla Minecraft behind. We've scoured and tried a bunch of different packs to be able to recommend the very best. Just like the best Minecraft mods and shaders, texture packs can help give an entirely new feel to one of the best PC games of the last decade, and it's just one of many ways of keeping the sandbox game feeling fresh after all these years. While some mods can alter Minecraft gameplay, and shaders change the quality and style of the graphics, texture packs allow you to add a new skin to existing blocks. One of the best PC games of all time and the ongoing king of sandbox games, Minecraft has incredible replayability, keeping fans and newbies coming to the game time after time. While the vanilla game still gets regular updates, Minecraft mods, texture packs, resource packs, and shaders can completely reinvent the game, affecting its overall look. For example, mods can completely alter gameplay, and Minecraft texture packs and resource packs change the appearance of existing blocks and add new blocks, respectively. Meanwhile, shader packs give you the same game with fancier graphics and effects. Internet Retailer Amazon dropped the price of all console copies of hit mech action game Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon. The price has gone down to $39.99 for every version, including the disc versions for the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X.
The sale is exclusive to the physical copies of the game available for consoles, and it is currently offered only through Amazon. The normal retail price for the game is $59.99, so this deal shaves off a good third of the cost for those who want to play the game on their console, rather than a PC. As of this announcement, the game is currently not on sale on Steam or other digital storefronts of any kind. However, for players who have been waiting to get their hands on the game, this is a nice opportunity.
This sale follows announcements of new model kits from Kotobukiya of famous Armored Cores from the series' history, as well as Armored Core getting its own entry in the video-game themed short film collection Secret Level, alongside Mega Man, Dungeons & Dragons, Warhammer 40,000 and Concord. Armored Core VI also received an update early in 2024, adding new weapons and parts for the Armored Cores and a ranked PVP game mode.
Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon is available now on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series S/X. There's no word yet on when the sale will end on Amazon.

We're going to see another one of the more unconventional Idea Factory International and Otomate otome games outside Japan soon, as 9 RIP makes its debut in October 2024. In this entry, there are multiple storylines with different love interests who are more otherworldly and even potentially dangerous than usual. As we go through it, it's even divided into groups of stories telling different tales. To learn more about what makes this Switch otome stand out, Siliconera got a chance to speak with 9 RIP Director Amon and Artist Yuuya about the adventure.
Jenni Lada: When did development on 9 RIP begin?
Amon: We started planning the project in 2021, and it officially began development in early 2022.
Yuuya: I believe the actual work began in 2022. I remember being very excited about working on the project from the beginning.
What design decisions did you make to ensure 9 RIP felt different from other Otomate otome games?
Amon: We were focused on the horror theme at first, but we realized that we wanted more than a simple dark and grim design for this otome game. So we used brightly colored, otherworldly flowers as motifs and incorporated glitchy art to create a mysterious and strange world in both design and presentation.
Yuuya: I think a horror-themed otome game is still quite rare.
Rather than just going for a dark and scary atmosphere, we focused on incorporating stylish colors and designs. In doing this, we hoped to create something that stands out and leaves a strong first impression. We kept that goal in mind as we continued our design work.
When drawing from urban legends, mythology, and the supernatural for 9 RIP's characters and designs, which concepts did you prioritize? How did you pick what you'd include?
Amon: From the early stages of the project, we envisioned a game centered on traditional Japanese urban legends, ghost stories, and supernatural phenomena. We understand that not everyone enjoys the horror genre, so we tried to attract more players by incorporating well-known ghost stories and supernatural phenomena.
When it came to the artistic direction for 9 RIP, how did you approach characters based on supernatural entities and make them appealing otome love interests?
Yuuya: While visual appeal was certainly important, we began by incorporating elements from the stories into each character's design. For example, in School Ghost Stories, we included the sword that inspired Kara Kara's name and the rope around the boy in the mirror's neck, which plays a key role in the story.
In Other Realm, we made the characters' professions and roles immediately recognizable by using designs reminiscent of priest robes for one character, and clothes that reflected the chaotic nature of the other.
We also incorporated traditional cultural elements and various kimono styles for the costumes of characters in the Spirit World route, and ensured the characters' outfits were both distinct and visually striking.
As for the Urban Legendscharacters, we prioritized modernity over representing supernatural phenomena, so the characters don't look like ghosts.
I think that approach made the hidden things in everyday life more believable.
Given you already had experience with otome game character designs for supernatural or otherworldly beings in Café Enchante and Cupid Parasite, how did that affect art and decisions for 9 RIP?
Yuuya: From my experience in various great projects, I've come to realize that each character has their own life and story. I always feel that you can't, and shouldn't, ignore this when designing characters. It's not just about creating visually appealing designs. By properly reflecting each character's background, I believe we can create more convincing, compelling, and lively characters.
What did you get to achieve in 9 RIP that you haven't been able to do in past Otomate otome games?
Amon: I'm not familiar with all Otomate titles, but I believe structuring the game as an omnibus with four chapters—School Ghost Stories, Urban Legends, Other Realm, and Spirit World—was a very unique approach. I don't think I've seen it in other titles.
Yuuya: Maybe getting the chance to feature some pretty frightening-looking characters. Personally, I'd love to create even scarier ones!
Is there anything you would like to say to overseas fans of otome games and those who are anticipating the release of 9 RIP?
Amon: You can experience strange and somewhat peculiar love stories in this game. While various ghosts appear, I hope you will embrace them rather than be afraid of them. Also, if this game sparks any interest in traditional Japanese ghost stories and spirits, I'd personally be very happy. I hope you continue to enjoy and love 9 RIP.
Yuuya: Thank you for your constant support of 9 RIP. I'm very happy to bring this work to you in English. Every country has its own ghost stories, urban legends, and folklore, but I hope this game gives you a chance to experience and take an interest in Japan's. I look forward to your continued support.
9 RIP will come to the Nintendo Switch on October 15, 2024.

Lego released its four Fortnite sets. These range in price from $14.99 to $99.99. While they are Lego Fortnite, they are not based on the in-game mode. Instead, each set allows you to build items and designs based upon the original game. However, the minifigs present in Battle Bus set may be found as playable characters in that mode.
The least expensive set is the $14.99 Durrr Burger. It consists of only 193 pieces. When put together, you create the burger with eyes and a tongue that appears in-game. The Supply Llama is the second most elaborate at $39.99. It involves 691 pieces and allows you to build the pinata llama. It also comes with a number of actual supplies you can build and place inside of it, like a Back Pack, Dynamite, and Slurp Juice.
The two most expensive sets are the Battle Bus and Peely Bone. Both are $100. The Battle Bus involves 954 pieces. You can attach the balloon to the top, and place the nine included minifigs inside. The exact characters you get are Adventure Peely, Battalion Brawler, Brite Bomber, Cube Assassin, Cuddle Team Leader, Drift, Meowscles, Raven, and Trespasser Elite. The Peely Bone set features the most pieces, at 1,414, and is the only one recommended for ages 18 and up. It lets someone build the Epic Outfit, which features one half Peely and one half skeleton. Once finished, it can be posed and equipped with items like a Banana Bag Back Bling and Peely Pick.
Here's the full list of all four Lego Fortnite sets that are now available, as well as the prices for each one.
Here's how all four sets look:
As a reminder, direct purchases from the Lego store include a bonus. If someone spends over $120, they also get a Halloween Pumpkin set. This lets someone build a Jack-o'-lantern and ghost. That is a 254 piece set that is normally $19.99. That promotion is only available until it runs out or available or until October 14, 2024 arrives, whichever comes first.
Lego Fortnite is available in Fortnite now. The four sets are also now available. Fortnite is available on the Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and mobile devices.

Otomate isn't shy about making otome games that are outside the range of normal expectations, with some some being dark like Virche Evermore or silly like Cupid Parasite. What we can count on is the developer going all-in on a theme. 9 RIP, the latest Switch otome that involves dating characters inspired by urban legends, ghosts, and supernatural entities, fully commits to the bit. In so doing, it also tells multiple stories of otherworldly encounters that feel like their own (romantic) urban legends.
Part of what makes 9 RIP such a unique otome game is its execution. While all three of the storylines begin on a common route, they diverge based on a choice made early on. So at the outset, we're presented with a young woman about to graduate high school, but preparing to declare what she'd like to do next and if she'll attend the college her mother desperately wants her to attend. Making one of three decisions while considering how to handle the problem causes the story to branch off into three main tales. Each one has at least two potential love interests tied to otherworldly elements. (If you've cleared other routes, this goes up to three on one path.) It's really fascinating, as we get to see how her destiny splits and multiple encounters and results based on her decision.
It also means that the ensuing romantic storylines on each path get to more heavily feature the selected characters tied to it. They're better integrated to the story, which means both their love stories and the overall arc feels stronger. This doesn't mean you won't encounter some of these other leads in the arcs that don't feature them as a candidate to chase. As an example, when you first meeting Koyo in that storyline branch, you'll also encounter Kureha and Yui. However, Kureha and Yui are supporting cast members there, and play larger parts in another branch. It means everything ties together in a more tidy manner, which I appreciated and felt enhanced the overall experience.
As does the insanity system. While there are the typical choices that can increase affection with particular love interests, there are others that affect the heroine's mental state. In each of the routes, our avatar ends up in varying predicaments. The sanity gauge comes into play based on the sorts of reactions we can select for certain situations and predicaments. These can, in turn, affect our fate. It's an interesting element, especially since it does tie in with the horror and supernatural themes at play. After all, the character does end up in some dire predicaments, and some of the love interests are intimidating or unsettling individuals.
Speaking of which, I genuinely love the range of love interests available in 9 RIP, as it really feels more varied than most otome games. There are so many romance options, and they really fit the theme of the game well. In fact, I think the selection means it'd be even easier for a player to find at least one that appeals to them. They're all pretty well written, with distinct personalities that come through and are appealing for various reasons. Also, while there are occasionally "scary" moments, there's a good sense of balance between drama, comedy, romance, and supernatural segments. The only suggestion I have is that since the characters are tied to different storylines, it's valuable to make a few saves on one of the save file pages so you can jump back to get on the route where you can pursue your favorites.
What's also great about 9 RIP is how well this otome game nails the general aesthetic and ambiance. Otomate understood the assignment. The UI, color schemes, and details all perfectly capture the mood. The CGs range from typical ones you'd see with love interests, in addition to some in which you can see the nature of these otherworldly companions and perhaps even darker tendencies. It is good at establishing and maintaining a mood, which really suits the theme well.
The only thing that really got to me is a stylistic choice regarding perspectives. In other Otomate otome games, there would occasionally be options to see parts of the stories from other characters' perspectives. So maybe we'd see what the love interest was thinking. In 9 RIP, you don't get that choice. As part of the normal progression down a path, it will suddenly cut from the heroine's viewpoint to that of one of the guys we can pursue in that route or an NPC. Occasionally, it is interesting or helpful. However, sometimes it really took me out of the moment — especially if it didn't add anything valuable to the moment and was just the guy thinking how he's instantly drawn to her or wants to be with her — and I'd have preferred if that was optional.
9 RIP is another one of those Otomate otome games that experiments with what we expect from these sorts of dating sims, and it's a great success as a result. The chance the developer took on storytelling means the love interests get more moments with the heroine and also feel like stars of their storylines. It involving urban legends and some horror staples mean we get some unexpected and fun romance options. Plus, the aesthetic is great. There are a few elements that might not be as appreciated people, but I feel like that comes down to personal tastes rather than actual failings on the part of the developer or game itself.
9 RIP will come to the Nintendo Switch on October 15, 2024.

Nintendo announced a Pikmin series crossover with the San Diego Zoo will take place in October and November 2024. Things kick off on October 1, 2024. As part of the promotion, the Denny Sanford Wildlife Explorers Basecamp will feature the characters from the game around the location.
There are no photos showing what people should look for when taking part in the Pikmin San Diego Zoo event. Nintendo only noted that the characters will be hidden at that part of the park. People who show up and hunt will have a chance to earn related items, however.
How it works is people who attend the San Diego Zoo will be able to check in with Nintendo. On all weekends between October 1, 2024 and November 30, 2024, there will be a Pikmin Pop-Up Tent. You can get tasks to earn a goodie bag there. It is also possible to check in for 100 My Nintendo Platinum Points. Note that the tent is only going to be there on weekends, so the first day that appears is October 5, 2024, and the last one is November 24, 2024.
There are two recent Pikmin games available. One is Pikmin Bloom, which is available on mobile devices. The latest console entry is Pikmin 4, which you can find on the Nintendo Switch.
It isn't uncommon for these sorts of events to happen, in general. For example, Nintendo held ones for Animal Crossing at aquariums.
The San Diego Zoo is at 2920 Zoo Drive in San Diego, California. The Pikmin event will run October 1, 2024 through November 30, 2024. This runs at the same time as the Kids Free Month at the park, which ends October 31, 2024.

On September 30, 2024, during the Ironmouse Twitch subathon, the VShojo Vtuber hit a new world record for subscribers on the service. She has 2.1 million followers on her channel and 320,728 subs as of 9:50am ET on October 1, 2024.
As part of her subathon commitment and promotion, Ironmouse said half of all of the money she raised will go to the Immune Deficiency Foundation. The performer has been outspoken about her own health issues and frequently supports the charity. In 2024, she held a charity Throne of Heresy Dungeons and Dragonscampaign with fellow VShojo Vtubers and contributed a song to the Compromised: Life Without Immunity documentary put together by it. She took part in a "Meet the Stars of Compromised" panel as well.
The official Twitch social media account shared the news when Ironmouse passed the 306,000 milestone mark. This beat a record previously held by streamer Kai Cenat.
Ironmouse herself also shared a message and screenshot of the moment on social media. She thanked people for her support when commemorating the occasion.
As October 1, 2024 began, Ironmouse also shared her final subathon post. She also committed to sharing a new Halloween costume at the start of the month to celebrate the holiday.
Ironmouse first debuted as a Vtuber in August 2017, and she is one of the founding members of the agency VShojo. In addition to supporting charity, she's also done the same for fellow performers. For example, in August 2024 she held a Vtuber Academy show.

Back in 2022, Annapurna, Konami, and No Code announced the three were working on a new Silent Hill: Townfall game was in development. However, we haven't heard much about the project since then. Now, following the Annapurna resignations, the official social media account confirmed the game is still in development.
There is no update on the progress of the game. We don't know how it looks or when it will be expected to appear. However, it is still in the works. It is going to be a spin-off, rather than a mainline entry. There are no gameplay trailers or details about any potential stories. Only a logo and teaser appeared since the 2022 announcement.
Here's the official announcement confirming that Silent Hill: Townfall will be made despite the resignations at Annapurna.
In case you need a reminder of what to expect from the series, here is the teaser video from 2022. It featured a person discussing things that had been done, while an electronic device in the background starts going haywire. As a reminder, in the Silent Hill series different types of technology will malfunction and behave that way when the monsters are lurking about.
This is one of multiple Silent Hill games on the way. We'll see the Bloober Team remake of Silent Hill 2 at the beginning of October 2024. Silent Hill f is also in development, and Ryukishi07 is working on the script for it. We also saw the spin-off Silent Hill: The Short Message appear on the PS5 earlier in 2024.
Silent Hill: Townfall is in development, though there is no release window for the spin-off game in the series still.

Monolith Soft celebrates its 25th anniversary on October 1, 2024, and to mark the occasion the studio released a new commemorative video as well as a new website celebrating the studio's long-standing history.
The video opens with the Xenoblade Chronicles 3 DLC Future Connected song "Future Awaits," as all the titles that the studio has produced since it was established in October 1999 are showcased on screen. These include the Xenoblade Chronicles series, the Xenosaga trilogy, the Baten Kaitos duology, the Namco x Capcom and Project X Zone crossovers, as well as lesser-known titles like Soma Bringer and Disaster: Day of Crisis.
It then shows Xenoblade Chronicles 3 protagonists Noah and Mio standing on a grass hill playing the flute as the protagonist of other Monolith Soft titles join them, including Rex, Pyra, and Mythra from Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Elma from Xenoblade Chronicles X, Shulk and Fiora from Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition, and KOS-MOS from Xenosaga.
The video culminates with the Monolith Soft logo forming from the memories of all the games, and a Japanese sentence which translates to "Opening the future of gaming." The sentence itself is a reference to the ending of Xenoblade Chronicles, where protagonist Shulk uses a similar line in Japanese.
You can check out the Monolith Soft 25th anniversary video here:
Additionally, the new Monolith Soft official anniversary website offers various phone wallpapers from all the aforementioned game series, as well as a message from Monolith Soft CEO Hirohide Sugiura. In it, Sugiura thanked fans for their continued support over the years and expressed his belief that Monolith Soft is in its "genesis" phase, and there is a lot more that the members of the studio want to accomplish in the future.
