Over the years, what defines a game as the "action" category has gotten more ambiguous than ever, as many games now include aspects of multiple core genres. However, one thing remains certain – games in this category give the player a polished, exciting experience. So, what is this list all about? This isn't a Top 10 Action Games of All Time list or a Top 10 Action Games of a Generation list. Instead, we're tackling this one from the angle of what's important, what's incredible, and what's fantastic right now. As in today. This week. This month. So when you don't see a Dark Souls game on this list, that's why even though I'd recommend a fresh playthrough of Dark Souls 3 every day. This ever-shifting list aims to capture the highlights of the now and what we think you'd love to be playing this very moment. Presented in alphabetical order, this list keeps it fresh. Let's dive in!

Death's Door

2021 has delivered several great indies, Death's Door is among the best. Channeling a bit of Zelda, a bit of Metroid, and a bit of Souls, players take on giant bosses and explore enchanting scenery. The soundtrack is also grand, and hey, you get to play as a bird, which is even cooler.

Exploring old areas of the world with new equipment and finding out how to use your powers for maximum effect is fun, and a minor progression system keeps you searching for secrets behind every corner and collecting resources from every foe bested. From the tutorial living castle on down the line, the boss battles are highly engaging and a blast to master. Death's Door is currently available on Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Check out our entire review here.

Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut

Ghost of Tsushima impressed on many levels during its initial 2020 release, letting players explore breathtaking scenery while participating in riveting combat. Little touches like the Kurosawa mode that transforms the game into a black-and-white vision that one might remember from films like Seven Samurai make all the difference here, as you can tell that a deft and practiced hand went into the creation of every element that makes up the whole of Ghost.

The director's cut is easily the best way to play Ghost today and comes with the new Iki island expansion that gives players plenty of more content to engage with. A director's commentary is adds significant depth for players that want to learn more about the game's creation, the real-life events that inspired it, the setting, and so much more. Since its release, Ghost has also received other major updates, including a massive multiplayer experience that you can take on with friends.

Hades

Roguelikes find plenty of appreciation these days, but Hades may be the one that gets everyone chasing their next run and rockets the genre to the spotlight in the coming years. The "just one more run" cycle has never been more apparent, and Hades throwing in some story to unravel and fantastic characters to meet adds a bit of zest to the equation that's tough to beat.

Hades has style, it's got permanent progression to keep things rolling along, weapons to master, and all kinds of secret unlocks to find. So why on earth are we talking about Hades now? You probably already knew this game rocks. However, it just came out for major consoles. Previously, you'd have to play on Switch or PC, but now you can take the trip through hell on PlayStation and Xbox. It's absolutely a journey worth taking.

Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales

For Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, if you can play it on the PlayStation 5, you should. Suppose PS5's power isn't obtainable due to the various factors from how COVID-19 or scalpers have impacted console availability. In that case, you could always go back and play Marvel's Spider-Man, but if you have the means, Miles Morales on PS5 is the choice of the moment.

While it's significantly shorter than the original game, it's packed with epic moments and battles. Miles' abilities change up the gameplay quite a bit, and zipping around the city is an incredible feeling. In addition to playing exceptionally well, Miles Morales on PlayStation 5 is one of few games available right now that takes advantage of current-gen hardware to show off what video games can do right now

Monster Hunter Rise

While Rise's endgame and rampage system has been divisive among fans, there's a lot to love about the latest entry in the Monster Hunter series. The Switch exclusive is eventually making its way to PC, but it's worth checking out now if you have Nintendo's portable power.

From making awesome ice-cream combinations to riding around the world on your doggo friend, Rise keeps the systems that everyone loves from previous entries and adds a few new quirks. Crafting new and powerful gear and taking on stronger and stronger monsters is always a good time. Of course, if you don't want to play Rise or don't have a Switch, Iceborne should be plenty to tide you over.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps

Ori and the Will of the Wisps is action-packed and challenging, but it's also an absolute work of art. Featuring stunning visuals to go along with the razor's edge gameplay, few games ascend to this level of prowess within the neo-Metroidvania genre. Ori might just melt your heart as you maneuver through its best-in-class platforming and combat combo.

The story and setpieces arc you through wonderful whimsy and fleeting moments of terror, so be ready for an immersive, enchanting adventure that loves showing off and keeping the player completely enthralled. While Ori and the Will of the Wisps can be brutal, progression mechanics help keep things going even when the journey can be tough.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

This early into the console cycle, we're looking for those big games to pave the way and show off the power of the new systems. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart does this, and how. While there's nothing new about jumping around and blasting enemies, does it ever look good here as you flip through rifts with absolutely zero load time, something that's sure to wow even the most hardened game connoisseur.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart feels great to play, and more importantly, all of the action feels like it was crafted with fun as the focus. The cartoony world is a cohesive joy to explore, and everything from the DualSense haptics to the impressive graphics makes this a boisterous, festive ride.

Returnal

Terrifying, exhilarating, and epic, Housemarque successfully translates fast-paced arcade action into a mysterious alien shooter. Returnal is one of the best games of the year and brilliantly seams various genres and features together to create something special. From piecing together the mysteries of the alien planet to taking on unforgettable bosses in an atmosphere drenched with dread, Returnal serves up tension with unyielding action.

The only place you can play Returnal right now is on PlayStation 5, but perhaps we can hold out some hope that it may come to PC in the future. Check out the entire review here.

Kena: Bridge of Spirits

The debut title from Ember Labs feels like a throwback to the third-person action platformers of old in the best way. As Kena, an inexperienced spirit guide, you're fighting to purify a beautiful land from corruption. You aren't alone; dozens of adorable critters called the Rot join the fray to assist Kena in battle as well as puzzle-solving. Kena's straightforward combat of chaining light and heavy attacks feels good and gets flashier when you call upon the Rot to distract enemies or turn your staff into an all-powerful hammer. Piercing targets with Kena's bow feels most satisfying, especially with the real sense of tension generated by PlayStation 5's DualSense controller. Kena's whimsical art direction makes it look like a walk in the park, but its boss battles offer a surprising challenge that requires a mastery of your arsenal and sharp reflexes. Kena's action might not break the mold, but it feels fantastic.

Far Cry 6

PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC

Far Cry 6 may not revolutionize the series' bombastic formula, but that doesn't mean it isn't a raucous good time. As guerilla soldier Dani Rojas, you're fighting to liberate the Cuba-inspired island of Yara from the ruthless "El Presidente", Antón Castillo (played by Giancarlo Esposito of The Mandolorian/Breaking Bad fame). Tearing apart the lush tropical island is a blast, whether you're using an arsenal of wacky makeshift weaponry like a CD-shooting gun, soaring the skies in a wingsuit, or taking down foes alongside ridiculous companions such as a weiner dog or rooster.  While the politically-charged story lacks its promising punch and its serious tone clashes with the absurdity of the gameplay, those looking only to cause havoc should find plenty to love. | Our Review

The billion-dollar Japanese animation industry continues to increase its popularity globally, thanks to more streaming programs supporting it. Outside of niche streaming services like Crunchyroll and Funimation, which have a sole focus on distributing anime, big-name companies like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon have also brought more Japanese animated shows to their respective platforms. We now have more options than ever to choose from, which is a good thing, because a wide variety of genres and themed shows have cropped up over the years. And to the delight of gamers, a lot of them involve video games in some way.

There's no denying the crossover between anime and video game fans. After all, many video games are influenced by anime, having similar plotlines, complete with flashy action sequences and thrilling heroics. We picked some anime that involve video games in creative ways, from going inside the trials and tribulations of a development studio to being transported into an MMORPG and living a different life. Here are our recommendations if you're looking for the perfect combination of your favorite hobby and the anime asthetic.

New Game!

Rating: TV-14

Most anime reference video games or show characters enjoying the hobby, but New Game! takes you into the world of game development, demonstrating the blood, sweat, and tears that go into the process. The narrative centers on the ambitious and bright-eyed Aoba, who starts her first day as a character designer for an all-female studio called Eagle Jump. Watching the team build a camaraderie as they work to make a sequel to their popular game is endearing, but there's also something very charming about watching Aoba learn from her superiors and realize that it takes time to master any craft. Equal parts lighthearted and heart-warming, New Game! shows how the littlest details can transform games into something special.

Gamers!

Rating: TV-14

The name (complete with exclamation point) says it all, putting the focus rightfully where it belongs. Gamers! is all about being a gamer and the bonds we build with others through our virtual pastime. The story focuses on a small group of students who are members of a game club at school. Expect trips to the arcade, video game shops, and seeing characters faceoff against each other in real games like fighter Persona 4 Arena Ultimax. Oh, and don't forget some complicated feelings in the love department. Every good anime needs that type of drama on the side.

Hi-Score Girl

Rating: TV-14

An adorable anime that pays homage to the classic '90s games many played at arcades, like Street Fighter II and Virtua Cop, Hi-Score Girl is the ultimate showcase of the competitive spirit and rivalries formed over getting our initials on the top-score display. Obsessed with games and bored with academia, Haruo meets his gaming match in Akira, the rich girl from his school. The two couldn't be more different, but they both approach games in interesting ways with unique strategies to surpass the competition. Hi-School Girl touches on our gaming pride and accepting the success of others, while also captivating with the burgeoning bond between Haruo and Akira, who may just be exactly what each other needs as they face their own hardships.

.hack//Sign

Rating: TV-14

What if you entered a video game world but couldn't log out? .hack//Sign is one of the more classic picks on this list, but an essential addition as it set a high bar for anime, especially with how it portrays our relationship with video games in surprising and thoughtful ways. When main character Tsukasa logs into MMORPG The World, he wakes up in a dungeon with short-term memory loss and soon realizes he is unable to exit the game. The suspense coupled with the lure of unraveling the mysteries behind the MMORPG and Tsukasa's real-world identity keeps you watching, but the larger topics of anxiety, escapism, and acceptance provide substance and meaning. Mostly, .hack//Sign just nails how people often assume certain roles in a virtual world to compensate for something missing in their real life.

Bottom-Tier Character Tomozaki

Rating: TV-14

As one of the newer anime on this list, Bottom-Tier Character follows Tomozaki, who ranks as the top in the world at a Smash Bros. clone called Attack Families, but struggles at playing the game of "life." When he meets another high-ranking player, who just so happens to be a popular girl from his school, she decides to help level up his IRL abilities, so he can see how human interaction can be just as rewarding and fun as mastering video games. Seeing daily life presented as an RPG with stats to acquire and improve will bring a smile, as will Tomozaki's unbridled passion for his favorite game and what it takes to excel at it.

Sword Art Online

Rating: TV-14

In many ways, .hack opened the door for Sword Art Online, which modernizes the concept by having the characters visit virtual reality MMORPG worlds. SAO starts with Kirito logging into the first release of Sword Art Online with 10,000 other players using a VR device known as the NerveGear, which stimulates the brain directly. Not all is as it seems, as players soon discover that they cannot log out – and that if they fall in the game, they die in real life. Main character Kirito grinds through the 100-level Aincrad dungeon alongside his progression raid guild and love interest Asuna, to try and escape the game. SAO also features multiple spinoffs, with a fantasy VRMMO called Alfheim Online, a shooter called Gun Gale Online, and the newest spinoff, Alicization, which tackles some all-new topics, like raising interesting questions about artificial intelligence.

Accel World

Rating: TV-14

Accel World comes from the mind of Sword Art Online's creator, Reki Kawahara, and also taps into futuristic concepts about technology. Protagonist Haru isn't the most popular guy to walk his high school; overweight and bullied, he spends his time playing virtual squash alone on his school's local network cyberspace. His life changes when his gaming skills catch the eye of the popular student council vice president, who introduces him to a secret program that allows its players to accelerate their cognition process to the point where time stops. Entitled Brain Burst, the ARMMO fighting game requires people to duel to obtain Burst Points, which can then be used for acceleration abilities in the real world. Watching Haru work toward the highest score in hopes of meeting the game's creator for answers is a thrill, and the epic duels, which pull out all the stops in the flashy moves department, don't disappoint.

Wotakoi: Love Is Hard For Otaku

Rating: TV-NR

Narumi and Hirotaka are all about keeping up appearances; Narumi works in a nice office, while Hirotaka is the epitome of a company man. However, when they're both out of work, you can find Narumi obsessing over the latest yaoi manga, and Hirotaka glued to his latest video game adventure. Former middle school classmates, the two reconnect and confide in each other over how hard it is to find love because people tend to look down on their passions. The anime explores the ups and downs as the pair try to keep up their facades and also search for love – being each other's shoulder to cry on for moral support – because, as the title says, love is hard for otaku.

And You Thought There Is Never A Girl Online?

Rating: TV-MA

Hideki Nishimura gets more than he bargained for when he finally meets his MMORPG guild in real life and discovers they're all girl gamers from his high school. The group quickly forms a school club as a way to play the game together, but Hideki realizes he has his hands full with Ako, who has taken a special interest in him and struggles to separate the game from their relationship in real life. Full of humorous moments and relatable gaming mishaps, And You Thought There Is Never A Girl Online? captures what makes us enjoy playing games with others, while also showing how easy it is to get caught up in the fantasy to avoid facing our own hardships and feelings in life.

The World God Only Knows

Rating: TV-NR

Keima Katsuragi is a master at dating sims, wooing every 2D girl that comes his way. His reputation and skill precede him, so when he gets an email offering him a contract to "conquer" girls, he thinks of it as just another game challenge. Unfortunately for him, he's just made a deal with a demon from Hell and now must honor his side of the agreement by helping her capture runaway spirits. The only way to draw these spirits out of the girls' hearts they hide in? By making them fall in love. Now, Keima must get to know girls and why they are the way they are without being behind a video game screen. After all, it's the only way to make these demons leave their side. As a bonus, the real humor comes from Keima's interactions with his clumsy demon sidekick; never has a pair been more mismatched to combat the heart.

Compare and (higher) contrast.

We have to admit to being just a little bit envious of Alex and his three Switches, but it does come in handy for videos like this. Alex has impressively managed to sync up all three Switches playing the intro cutscene to Super Mario Odyssey, showing off the OLED's higher contrast and brighter-seeming colours.

We've seen comparisons of the screens before, but not like this: shot in 60FPS at 1080p, you'll be able to see the differences much clearer. Hooray!

Cozy Grove brought Animal Crossing-like wholesomeness to the Nintendo Switch earlier this year, but we were slightly underwhelmed — the game was missing a lot of vitality and the kind of content that keeps you coming back, day after day. It looks like that's set to change with developer Spry Fox's new Autumn Update, which adds a ton of quality-of-life improvements that may just entice us back to the game.

Riders Republic is holding a free PC Play Day ahead of its launch later this month

You've got another chance to check out Riders Republic ahead of launch if you're planning on playing on PC. The extreme sports open-world game will be available on PC to play free for 24 hours starting the morning of October 12, and you can start pre-loading it the day before.

During the PC Play Day, all of Riders Republic's multiplayer modes and career progressions will be available to try out. That means you'll be able to bike, ski, snowboard, and wingsuit your way around some of the United States' most scenic national parks landmarks, testing your skill and mettle in Mass Race, Versus Mode, Tricks Battle, and Free for All.

Mass Race is probably the mode you've seen the most of, if you've been watching Ubisoft's promotional material for Riders Republic. These are the huge, 50-player races that jump from extreme sport to extreme sport, perhaps starting with a downhill skiing segment and transitioning into a rocket wingsuit course halfway through. Tricks Battle takes place in smaller bespoke arenas, and see two teams of six players compete to land tricks and capture zones.

New World review – a shiny new player in the MMO game

You know an MMO's starting to click with you when you're logging on during lunch breaks. There's a moreish interplay between New World's gathering and crafting that's got its hooks in me. But for everything that Amazon Games has got right in its new MMO, there are plenty more features that feel undercooked and ill-considered, putting a significant dampener on the experience.

Does it scratch that itch you've got in the back of your brain for a new MMO? Definitely. Will you be gasping in awe, wondering how Amazon Games has managed to reinvigorate the genre? Probably not.

As soon as you get your first sword and shield in the tutorial zone, you'll notice that New World's combat differs significantly from most other MMOs. Rather than leaning on auto-attacks and cooldown-based abilities, New World employs an action-combat system that's closer to third-person RPGs like The Witcher 3 and Skyrim. The result is that swordplay feels so much more satisfying, and I'm no longer mindlessly clicking between mobs until the XP bar ticks over. It's certainly not the first MMO to give the player a more active role in combat, but melee brawls feel tight and responsive.

Marvel's Avengers purchase consumables teamGaming enthusiasts have rightly called out many recent games for their adoption of microtransactions, especially ones that give players a significant advantage. Games that feature these "pay-to-win" elements at launch receive plenty of scrutiny as is, but players get even more upset when titles add microtransactions post-launch when they did not have them initially. It seems that Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics have decided to do exactly this with their successful Marvel's Avengers game. Players noticed that the title's latest update sneakily added the ability to purchase XP, resource boosts, and other consumables with real-world money. Notably, Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics said very little about the game's new marketplace update, likely because they anticipated that the addition of microtransactions would generate a palpable degree of backlash. Indeed, the playerbase did not respond kindly to the update, as many of them took to social media to exp...
