I can't count the number of times I've been in the thick of a Pokémon Unite match, feeling good about my team's chances of winning, only for the timer to countdown to zero and reveal that we actually got wrecked. According to makers TiMi Studio Group, that's by design.
If any single character is a visual shorthand for Halo Infinite—more than Master Chief, more than Cortana, more than...that other AI—it's Craig the Brute. A screenshot of his character model served as evidence for the game's supposed graphical shortcomings last year. He showed up again during this morning's re-reveal,…
Have you ever picked up a FromSoftware game, played it for a while, got your ass whooped repeatedly, and wondered how you're ever supposed to beat the game? It's probably a question every Dark Souls 3 player has asked at least once. However, you probably haven't asked yourself how you're supposed to beat it using just…
God, the feeling of playing Grand Theft Auto III upon release. Were you there for it? Do you remember it? You could actually sense, in the moment, that you were experiencing a cultural shift, a game that was going to change things forever. But why? How? What defines the influence and impact of GTA III? There's no…
Destiny 2 has an easy to pull-off trick called the min/max glitch on PC that gives players infinite orbs and a host of other advantages that break a lot of the game's big activities. Bungie confirmed over the weekend that it's working on a fix, but in the meantime the developer is warning players will be "met with…
When Square Enix revealed Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy at E3 earlier this year, I was not excited. The idea of playing only as Peter "Star-Lord" Quill, arguably the least interesting member of the galaxy-guarding super group, did nothing for me. The poor technical performance displayed in the game's early footage…
After what's felt like an infinity of waiting, we finally have an idea of what Halo Infinite's campaign will look like. Developer 343 Industries re-revealed the mode for the first-person shooter in a digital showcase today. Take a look:
As in the past few Call of Duty games, in Call of Duty: Vanguard's multiplayer game modes, you'll be picking an operator to play as for the match. Each of Vanguard's operators has their own backstory, and developer Sledgehammer Games has introduced four of them - including two characters who play pivotal roles in Vanguard's single-player campaign.
Front and centre is Arthur Kingsley, the protagonist of Vanguard's narrative campaign. He's a special forces soldier who was born in Cameroon and educated in England, and enlisted in the army as a paratrooper during World War II. Sledgehammer says he was the first character the studio created for Vanguard, and his important traits - in particular, a natural sense for true leadership - have been at his core since the start of Vanguard's development.
Next up is Russian sniper Polina Petrova, who also appears in the single-player campaign. Sledgehammer says over the course of Vanguard's story, we'll see her transformation from a nurse who yearned to join the battle into a fearsome soldier feared by the Nazis and celebrated by her fellow soldiers.
'Feel' is the mark of any good action game - that mix of control and animation that makes pulling off your moves ever-so-satisfying. Sometimes you can tell a developer is pouring its heart into good game feel just from a few seconds of footage, and that's exactly the case with the upcoming Metroidvania game, Souldiers.
Souldiers has you exploring a fantasy realm called Terragaya as one of three character classes: the melee-focused scout, the ranged archer, or the spell-slinging caster. You'll solve environmental puzzles, explore new areas as you get access to additional moves, and scour the interconnected world for treasure and challenging bosses to fight.
That's all the standard Metroidvania stuff, but the eye-catching thing about Souldiers is the combat. It looks like you have a ton of movement options in fights, including air dashes, and there appear to be an array of combo abilities that let you attack from all angles and ranges. Each hit against standard enemies lands with satisfying crunch, and it looks like there are a load of creative boss encounters, too.
The RetroArch devs promised that more emulator cores would be coming to Steam soon, and the first step in that process has happened. Whether it was called the Genesis or Mega Drive in your youth, Sega's 16-bit console has gotten extra representation in the Steam version of RetroArch with Picodrive.
Two other RetroArch emulators available on Steam support Genesis and Mega Drive games - Genesis Plus GX and multi-system emulator Final Burn Neo - but Picodrive goes a step further with support for 32X games. That's something even the official Sega collection on Steam doesn't offer.
The RetroArch folks note that this is just the first additional emulator Valve's service, as "new cores are on the verge of being approved on Steam". As they've detailed in the past, Valve restrictions prevent RetroArch on Steam from using the same in-app emulator downloads and updates that the standalone version provides, and thus the developers have to get each new emulator approved as free DLC listed on the store.
Intel is set to reveal its upcoming 12th generation gaming CPU lineup this week at Intel Innovation, built on its new hybrid microarchitecture Alder Lake. Despite the imminent nature of the event, leakers haven't stopped sharing information on team blue's new chips and have given us some indication of the Core i5-12600K's level of performance. Suffice to say, AMD may have a real challenge on its hands.
Twitter users 9550pro and TUM-APISAK, as highlighted by Wccftech, have shared performance metrics from CPU-Z benchmarks. The i5 scored 746 and 6,563 points in single-threaded and multi-threaded tests, respectively. Compared to the Ryzen 5 5600X, its presumed main competitor, it outperforms the AMD chip by as much as 50% and is also faster than the Ryzen 7 5800X.
As with all leaks, we'll have to wait until we get our hands on the new Intel CPU before we can come to any clear conclusions on how it fares versus team red's offerings. It's looking increasingly likely, however, that marrying your gaming PC with an Alder Lake chip could be a great option.
The new Project Mojave mod for Fallout 4 is out now, and what it does is bring the world of Obsidian's Fallout: New Vegas to the more updated engine - featuring a remake of roughly a quarter of the game's map, including the New Vegas strip and "three functional casinos".
Fallout 4: Project Mojave, however, is out now and can be downloaded at Nexus Mods (thanks, DSOGaming). It's only "an early access look" that includes the lower half of the Mojave Wasteland map, but does feature the iconic Vegas Strip - as well as the ability to build three functional casino games to play on the strip.
October 25, 2021 The latest Apex Legends trailer has revealed Ash's abilities.
Respawn is continuing to deepen the ties between Apex Legends and Titanfall, offering a bit of solace to fans of the original series - or pouring salt in the wounds of everyone desperate for Titanfall 3, depending on your perspective. The new Apex Legends season will introduce Titanfall 2's Ash as the game's next legend, and a fresh gameplay trailer and official site update have revealed what to expect from her abilities.
Ash's tactical is Arc Snare, which lays a trap that'll damage and tether the first enemy who gets too close. Her passive is Marked For Death, which shows the location of recent deathboxes on the map, and will mark surviving attackers.
Her ultimate is Phase Breach, which opens a one-way portal to a targeted location. In the trailer, we see her use this ability to cross a massive vertical distance. We will get more specific details on the new season, Escape, when the patch notes land "later this week".
It's no secret that Nvidia wants to curb crypto mining on its RTX 3000 gaming GPUs, with team green introducing hash rate limiters into the cards earlier this year. However, the company hopes to capitalise on this demand through its own CMP HX range of graphics cards dedicated to mining, and it looks like the flagship CMP 170HX could cost double the price of an RTX 3090.
Spotted by Komachi_Ensaka on Twitter, the unannounced mining GPU is currently listed on Yahoo Auctions for ¥600,000 JPY, which is around $5,279 USD. The specialist card is also available through Vipera, a Dubai-based retailer that's selling the crypto component for $4,560 USD.
Given its specialist nature, the CMP 170HX is on a different level compared to a gaming GPU when it comes to crypto mining. As it's specifically designed to solve cryptocurrency algorithms, it features an unlocked hash rate, but lacks gaming monitor display outputs and uses passive cooling. This leaves miners with two component ranges to choose from, while PC gamers remain limited to using traditional graphics cards.
October 25, 2021: The Phasmophobia Nightmare patch notes are here, confirming four new ghosts and the Maple Lodge campsite map.
The Phasmophobia Halloween update is now available after numerous teases over the last month and we've now got the Phasmophobia v0.4.0 patch notes - which includes details of the more intense difficulty level, a surprising amount of new ghosts, and the new haunted campsite map.
The new update was teased back in September after developer Kinetic Games added a new card to Phasmophobia's public Trello board promising a "major update" for Halloween. Earlier this month Kinetic Games posted a teaser for two new ghost types showing the journal entry for one of them. Players correctly theorised that this could be the game's first ghost pair called 'The Twins' - which, if correct, I'm betting will be based on cinema's most famous ghost pair from The Shining.
Today's patch notes reveal there are actually four ghosts coming in the Nightmare update - The Twins, Raiju, Onryo, and Obake. Apart from spirits, the Maple Lodge Campsite is revealed as the title of the new map - which is described as a "medium-sized map featuring picnic areas, games, multiple tents, a log cabin, and a haunted lake."
A platform fighting game similar to Nintendo's Super Smash Bros or this month's Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl but starring Warner Bros licensed characters is reportedly in the works - which, if true, would include fighters such as Batman, Gandalf, Fred Flintstone, and Shaggy from Scooby-Doo.
According to the original leak on Reddit, the Warner Bros crossover platform fighter is more of a tag-team battler than a traditional Smash Bros-style game but will include properties from multiple Warner Bros properties - including DC Comics, Lord of the Rings, Mad Max, the studio's multiple cartoons, and possibly even the Harry Potter series.
Picking the best gaming mouse is far more difficult than it used to be, with more gaming PC brands to choose from than ever before - and with advancements in low latency technology, even the best wireless gaming mouse is an option.
Nailing down exactly what you want can be tricky, as it's a delicate balance of finding the right mix of features and design. You have to juggle comfort, ergonomics, performance, reliability, specs, and, as always, aesthetics. Figure out which of these attributes are most important to you, and then take a dive into the comparisons below.
While it used to be as simple as buying Logitech or Razer, competition is hot with digital rodents from SteelSeries, Corsair, Roccat, and more in 2021. We've tested a wide variety of gaming mice and have finally narrowed down our favourites based on the genres of games, grip styles, and hand sizes they're most suited to, as well as the more affordable options for those of you that don't mind sacrificing a few features.
Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy drops tomorrow (October 26), but ahead of its imminent arrival the reviews have begun pouring in, giving us a good idea of what's in store - and whether it'll be worth your hard-earned pennies. So, let's take a look at what the critics have made of the brand-new action-adventure game, shall we?
Si far, it looks like Guardians of the Galaxy - which takes Star-Lord and the gang across the universe in a narrative-driven adventure full of "twists and turns" - has fared well with the critics across the board. As of writing, the upcoming PC game's sitting at a very healthy aggregate score of 82 on Opencritic, and at 72, 81, and 82 on Metacritic for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X, respectively.
In PCGamesN's own Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy game review, Dave calls it a "marvellous adventure" and scores it a seven-out-of-ten. "Guardians of the Galaxy mostly nails the quirky tone and characters that Marvel fans will be hoping for," he notes, adding, "Otherwise strong presentation is marred by a few too many visual glitches, but if you can tolerate these and some repetitive combat, it's worth a look." You can read our write-up in full at the above link.
Earlier this month we had a look at not only the campaign mechanics for the Tzeentch Chaos faction, but also general mechanics for Chaos as a whole. Following this information drop, Creative Assembly has today detailed the campaign mechanics for the first Chaos faction ever revealed in the context of Total War: Warhammer III - Khorne.
Surprising no one, Khorne factions thrive off war and destruction. Their principal resource is skulls, which you collect by doing just about anything. You can spend these skulls via Khorne's unique tech tree, and use them to make a specific offering to the Skull Throne for massive buffs, among other things.
As you can imagine, taking over settlements is not really Khorne's thing, but Khorne factions can still expand their territory. If you raise a settlement (and you should always raise a settlement as Khorne), then so long as you own another settlement already in the same province, ruined settlements will eventually be automatically colonised for free, providing another faction doesn't try and claim it first. Of course, if they do, you know what you need to do about that.
Replacing an ageing hard drive with one of the best SSDs is one of the easiest ways to improve your gaming PC, and is generally one of the simplest things to install to boot. They dramatically improve game load times and general system performance, allowing you to spend less time waiting and more time playing. If you're in need of an upgrade or replacement storage solution, you'll want to check out the Western Digital SN750 1TB NVMe PCIe SSD, which is currently available for less than half price on Amazon.
The 1TB model of the SN750 can be yours on Amazon US, with a 52% discount, for just $119.99, down from its full price of $249.99. Such a saving gives you more than enough to pick up a new gaming mouse or one of the best gaming keyboards - whatever the peripheral-shaped hole you have in your life.
Amazon UK has the same drive for an ever so slightly bigger discount, of 53%, making it a steal at £88.99 compared to its £190.99 full price.
October 25, 2021: Halo Infinite's campaign trailer reveals new enemies and some inspiration from Just Cause, Far Cry, and Doom Eternal.
The first new Halo Infinite campaign gameplay for over a year has finally been shown today, which you can check out below. The latest Halo game's multiplayer has been shown many times and has even been playable, but this overview finally gives fans of Halo's single-player a taste of what they'll be facing.
That's finally come to an end with the new gameplay trailer released today, and although anyone expecting a longer stream may have been disappointed there was certainly a lot to take in - including some inspirations from other major shooters.
V's apartment in Cyberpunk 2077 can get some minor updates based on what you get up to in Night City - for example, posters and trinkets appear when you complete certain side gigs, and you can even adopt a cat who'll make himself at home. But, materially, it's the same space for all players with no real customisation options. Now, though, a modder has created some impressive apartment overhauls that let the pad really reflect who your V is.
Cyberpunk 2077 modder ProximaDust has so far posted four apartment overhauls on Nexus Mods, each of which offers a totally different flavour of space based on your V's lifepath background, with other style preferences folded in, too - and they look pretty darn dazzling. For example, there are currently three variations of Street Kid-style apartments - 'glam', 'thrash', and 'techie' - and the first of a Corpo-inspired set of suites.
The glam Street Kid option reworks V's flat with a whole new vibe, giving it colourful neon lights, flashy furniture, and a more glamorous look overall. The thrash version, meanwhile, adds things like a drumkit, snooker table loaded up with V's stash of weapons and kit, and a weights bench, with a more pared-back style. The techie mod has a cool blue-and-chrome scheme going on, with laptops and tech scattered all about.
During the final battle of Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, I call over the gang for a quick pep talk. Drax rants about how he craves to win a battle such as this one, and asks the rest of us to stand down so he can finish it alone. Gamora objects, seeking the glory for herself. Groot... well, Groot declares that he is Groot. I rally the others to finish the fight, hoping that the tape in Peter 'Starlord' Quill's portable deck plays some fitting battle music.
You could argue that it's a fittingly off-beat moment for Guardians of the Galaxy, a quirky comic book series about a chaotic neutral band of misfits doing good deeds by accident, self-interest, or a momentarily unrepressed sense of honour, but in practice it just undermines the tension. Starlord doesn't react to the choice of song in any way that acknowledges its inaptness or plays it for laughs, and because it comes about from a truly random shuffle as opposed to the movies' careful and deliberate curation, it is wholly inapt, rather than just inapt enough to work.
Everything in the seaside town of Moonglow Bay has seen better days. That includes you, a middle-aged accountant who's moved out of the big city for a fresh start. But things never go quite to plan, do they? The moment-to-moment of Moonglow Bay is a chilled-out experience of getting out onto the waves, exploring various biomes, catching fish, and cooking them up to sell or gift to the townspeople. But within that is an exploration of things going awry, and letting go of old dreams in order to build new ones.
It started a few months ago: we got an email about shoes designed using 'blockchain technology', and had a good laugh about it as a concept. But in retrospect, this email was merely the ripple on a glass of water that go ahead of a T-Rex's mighty tread. Except in this analogy the T-Rex is one of 10,001 unique dinosaurs programatically generated from different traits. And it's wearing wacky sunglasses and smoking a pipe.
Chinese publishers NetEase have bought Grasshopper Manufacture, the Japanese studio behind stylish, swaggering games including No More Heroes, The Silver Case, and Killer7. While NetEase have roots in mobile games, they have been investing in fancier things. Grasshopper say that with NetEase's cash, they plan to release "three even higher-quality 'Grasshopper Manufacture Games'" over the next decade.
After focusing a lot of attention on Halo Infinite's multiplayer, Microsoft have turned back to showing off the story campaign. Today's new campaign trailer, sadly, did not give us another hot WWE promo from a space-ape but it did kinda have Far Cry-ish vibes. Watch on for Master Chef zooming around big levels in vehicles, causing big explosions, upgrading his abilities, and bantering with his new Tamagotchi girlfriend.
In a video game landscape that's pocked with millions of map markers and vast open worlds, Marvel's Guardians Of The Galaxy is a linear action adventure game with a clear beginning, middle and an end. It's an approach that feels refreshingly old-school, in the way it guides you smoothly from one story bit to another. But this doesn't mean it's one big flatline without any peaks, troughs, or surprises.
If anything, the game as a whole is a wonderful surprise. Planet-hopping as Star Lord is great fun, made even better by his colourful compatriots and the genuinely funny craic they share. Marvel fan or clueless layman? Doesn't matter, you're in for a good time no matter where you sit on the MCU scale.
Happy Halloween you horrible little monsters! To celebrate the spookiest of all seasons - with the big day itself coming up at the weekend - we've got a whole host of horror-themed articles that you'll see spread out over the week. Like ectoplasm. Or toxic waste. Something thematically oozey.
These will get you in the mood for dressing as a character from a Resident Evil game, or a scary cat of some description. Keep checking the Halloween 2021 tag to see more appearing, out of thin air - like a g-g-g-ghost.
Blizzard have announced that Overwatch's McCree will be known as Cole Cassidy going forward. They're renaming the cowboy to distance him from his real-life namesake, former Blizzard employee Jesse McCree. He left the developer due to unknown reasons in August, but his departure came after the State of California filed a lawsuit against Activision Blizzard, alleging the company fostered a "frat boy" culture of sexual harassment and discrimination. The name change will take effect in-game tomorrow.
One of the biggest indie darlings of the year has to be Digixart's hitchhiking narrative adventure, Road 96, and while it came out back in August, it's likely to come up in conversations when Game of the Year talks roll around at the end of 2021. Capitalizing on the positive buzz surrounding the project, the […]

Between trailer reveals during technical preview sessions and the recent flight-testing, developer 343 Industries has showcased plenty of Halo Infinite's multiplayer. What it has been less forthcoming with, though, are details on the game's campaign and storyline, which we really haven't seen much of since the game's initial (and controversial) initial reveal last year. Since […]
Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy on PS4 Like many, I had a lot of questions going into Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. Would it try to simply replicate the success and style of its MCU movie counterparts? How does it compare to Marvel's Avengers and Marvel's Spider-Man? What new and fun things does it bring […]
While Intel's Core i9-12900K flagship Alder Lake chip still hasn't been officially announced, one lucky customer has already got their hands on two CPUs. Reddit user Seby9123 somehow managed to purchase a couple of Core i9-12900K processors. The processors were reportedly bought for $610 USD each before tax from Mindfactory, a retailer in Germany. Surprisingly, they shipped out to the customer. While unexpected, this isn't the first time this has happened before the launch of an Intel product. In March of this year, Rocket Lake CPUs were also prematurely sold at a match the larger scale — once again via Mindfactory. Several photos of the processor and packaging were posted, showing off the new box design. The box also included a gold wafer that holds the CPU. Neither the box nor user manual seem to include information about the i9-12900K's specifications. However, the CPU can't be used before the Z690 motherboards become available. So, we w...

A Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy comparison trailer was posted on Friday, showing gamers what the three remasters will look like at launch. Although not everyone was happy, most people seemed pleasantly surprised by the visual upgrades. Usually, nice visuals come at the cost of heavier specification requirements. Although in this case, that isn't true as the system requirements for The GTA Trilogy are surprisingly low. Judging by the initial trailer, it looks as though all three remasters are running on the same game engine. They all boast similar visuals that work as a modernized rendition of their less realistic aesthetics. Therefore, you can reasonably assume that the listed system requirements will cover all three titles included in the collection. Easy enough to run The system requirements for The GTA Trilogy should be easy enough to achieve for most gaming PCs. GPU wise, the minimum is a GTX 760 and the recommended is a GTX 970. The former is a budget graphics card...

The latest Apex Legends: Escape trailer just dropped and it gives us a first proper look at Storm Point, the new map coming to the battle royale with Escape. The trailer also reveals more information about the new SMG, gives us a clear idea of Ash's abilities, and shows off a collection of new skins. There's not much more to say about Ash other than confirming her abilities. The knife that tethers enemies is her Tactical Ability, and her Ultimate is the slice in reality she cuts with her sword. This looks like it functions very similarly to Wraith's portal. Her abilities are what we expected from the previous trailer. The only question is, what's the deal with the Data Knife? If you missed her origin story, you can check it out here. Escape to the island As suspected, the setting for the Escape launch trailer wasn't a random island. It's the new map called Storm Point. The map comes with some unique mechanics, which should do a lot to keep the gameplay feeling fresh. T...

Since launch, Call of Duty: Warzone has seen its fair share of bugs and glitches. From players being able to get inside of walls to the broken ghost perk, fans have seen a range of them ruin games. However, not all bugs are as game breaking and detrimental to your experience. A new Warzone bug is changing the victory cutscene when you and your squad win your match. Usually, winning a match means you are greeted with a reel of the names of players who were in the same game as you. Then, a cutscene takes you up to a helicopter and out of the battlefield. Now, it appears that some players are seeing the familiar final kill cam screen after a Warzone victory. For multiple years, Call of Duty multiplayer matches have ended showing the final kill cam. This shows the last battle that occurred in the match before it ended. More recently, this has changed to show off the best play in a game of multiplayer. Where has the victory cutscene gone in Call of Duty: Warzone? A Warzone player ...
