Today, contract testers at the Call of Duty studio Raven Software were told that the studio would face layoffs on January 28th of next year, a Call of Duty community manager said on Twitter. A source familiar with the goings-on at the company confirmed to Kotaku that for the next few days in early December, the…

Destroy-anything indie game Teardown now has a complete campaign

Teardown was a hit with the community before it even launched, thanks to a series of Twitter videos showcasing the game's impressive freeform destruction. The game hit Steam Early Access just over a year ago, and it's still not quite ready for 1.0 - but there's a whole lot more of it to enjoy now, as the devs have completed the campaign.

This week's 0.9 release introduces the second half of the campaign. "For the past year, we have worked hard to bring you the completion of the Teardown campaign," the devs explain in the announcement. "And we are pleased to bring you an update packed to the brim with exciting stuff. New locations, new mission types, new tools, new characters, robots (!), and a whole lot of mayhem!"

From here, the devs are set to "dive into the final stretch leading to the 1.0 release". If you want to check out the expanded campaign and dive in before that final launch, the game is currently 20% off, bringing the price down to $15.99 / £14.79 / €15.99.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla adds Basim's sword, but you need to play this week to get it

Assassin's Creed Valhalla is in a bit of a holding pattern right now, as the next bit of DLC is still somewhere over the horizon. However, the devs still have some stuff in mind to keep you occupied until then - like new swords. Another community challenge event is now underway, and if the goal is met (it will be) everyone who participates will get a shiny new sword.

More specifically, you'll get Basim's sword, a stylish one-handed weapon modeled after the one wielded by the proto-assassin. To get it, you need to get a kill with any one-handed sword - the weapon will be unlocked once the community reaches 250,000 one-handed sword kills, and with many days left on the challenge, that's already nearly complete.

The Oskoreia Festival has also been extended to December 9 so that "all players are able to fully enjoy" it. The spooky festival was originally scheduled to conclude on December 2, and still feels like a slightly-late effort at a Halloween celebration. But hey, if you're mad that the calendar has left Halloween behind in favour of Christmas season, Valhalla is keeping the spirits up.

Half-Life: Blue Shift mod for Black Mesa now includes three playable chapters

Now you can play the first three chapters of Half-Life: Blue Shift, rebuilt in the spiffy new version of the Source Engine used in Black Mesa. The modding group behind the Blue Shift mod, HECU Collective, continues to publish new chapters of the Half-Life spin-off FPS game, which tells the story of a Black Mesa Research Facility security guard on the day of Gordon Freeman's fateful misadventure.

The first playable chunk of the mod arrived back in March, and it only included a brief introduction to Blue Shift. Now you can play Living Quarters Outbound, Insecurity, and Duty Calls, including all the taut combat sequences and environmental puzzles featured in the original game.

The most recent version of Black Mesa: Blue Shift also adds in some fixes for chapter two, new character animations, and some maintenance workers - all of whom, like protagonist Barney Calhoun, are having an extremely bad day. Duty Calls is where events in Blue Shift really pop off, and it begins in the wreckage of an elevator shaft, where Barney wakes up after Freeman sets off the resonance cascade, filling the facility with ravenous alien monsters.

Icarus First Cohort Envirosuit Supporter's EditionIcarus is now live. If you check its store page, you might notice a purchasable DLC called the Supporter's Edition. In a way, it acts as an expansion pass with a couple of goodies. Here's our Icarus mini-guide to help you obtain the First Cohort Envirosuit from the Supporter's Edition. Note: We'll have an Icarus guides and features hub soon, so stay tuned.   Icarus guide: How to get the First Cohort Envirosuit from the Supporter's Edition As mentioned, the Icarus Supporter's Edition DLC is also an expansion pass. It'll give you access to New Frontiers and Dangerous Horizons, two episodes that will be made available in the future. Likewise, you'll be able to try two additional Outposts, the forest and arctic biomes, which are sandbox environments that don't have a session timer/permadeath mechanic. However, one thing that might help you out is the First Cohort Envirosuit. It has an extra module slot, an extra oxygen slot, an ...

stanley parable ultra deluxe release dateNo, I'm serious. This isn't a trick to the level you'd see in The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe; the story-based games comprised of choices and decisions has a new release date of early 2022. Allegedly, anyway, this expanded version of The Stanley Parable was announced all the way back in 2018. During that year's The Game Awards, the expanded game would get a release date of 2019. But then it was pushed to 2020, which also didn't really happen. Many fans have probably asked the question: where exactly did The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe game go, and what's the true release date? Well, a new trailer by the developers seeks to answer that question, with a little bit of self-deprecation to help appease the fans. In the video, it states: "What does it mean to be a videogame developer? It means lying, boldly and brazenly to your audience, promising them release dates that are wildly outside the realm of reality."   It's finally...

Icarus Photo Mode Screenshot Folder Disable HudIcarus offers a wide, expansive world filled with dazzling environments. Naturally, you might want to capture some memorable moments. Here's our Icarus mini-guide to help you with Photo Mode, disabling the HUD, and finding your screenshot folder. Note: We'll have an Icarus guides and features hub soon, so stay tuned.   Icarus guide: Photo Mode and screenshots Photo Mode Yes, Icarus does have its own Photo Mode, though there's one notable caveat. Since this is a session-based survival game, there's always a timer running in the background with only your character's animation getting locked. As such, if your character is running when you activate Photo Mode, they'd still have that animation (i.e., running in place), while the animals around you continue to frolic. Photo Mode allows you to tweak several options, such as field of view, exposure, bloom, and various presets. You can also hold right-click to move the camera around and get the perfec...

Icarus Solo Offline Prospect OutpostIcarus is a new survival game by Dean Hall (creator of DayZ) and RocketWerkz. Featuring session-based gameplay, you'll attempt to craft, build, and escape with your riches. Before you set off on an adventure, though, you'll need to know a few tidbits. Here's our Icarus guide to help you with Outposts, Prospects, Offline Mode, playing solo, and other concepts when you're just starting your game. Note: We'll have an Icarus guides and features hub soon, so stay tuned.   Icarus beginner's guide: Outposts, Prospects, playing offline, and playing solo Play vs. Offline Icarus' main menu will show a couple of options: Play and Offline. The former refers to online play and the latter, naturally, is for offline play. The key difference here is how saves are handled. Online play progress is stored in RocketWerkz's servers. Conversely, playing offline means that your save is stored locally. Also, you won't be able to transfer your chara...

Holiday RPGs Grim DawnAs the new year approaches, a lot of us have a bit of extra time. Obviously, one of the best ways to fill these available hours is to play games. I'm not biased. You're a on a video game website. What did you think I was gonna talk about? Flag football? Here are two RPGs that have been around for quite some time but either have some noteworthy new content or are available to a whole new audience starting this week. Regardless, both RPGs are a great way to spend countless Holiday hours questing, exploring, and working on character builds.   Grim Dawn Grim Dawn has been available on PC for almost six years, but received two expansions and a battle gauntlet mode to give players more of that great ARPG to sink their teeth into. This week, the number of people with access to the title gets even larger, as the Definitive Edition of the game launched on Xbox. This version comes complete with all of the game's DLC, so a lot of people are going to be experiencing the g...
