PCGamesN Monday, January 10, 2022 8:06 AM 2022 is here, League of Legends fans, which means another year packed with gameplay updates, new champions to welcome to the MOBA game, and plenty of new skins. League of Legends patch 12.1 has headed to live servers, bringing a handful of item and champ changes and some snazzy new Elderwood skins. Now, it's time to see what the second patch of the Season 12 League of Legends patch schedule will bring. The big news for 12.2 is the arrival of brand-new champion, Zeri. It seems she might have made a slightly premature debut as her universe and biography pages (which went live January 4) appear to have now been taken down, though we have an idea of what she's all about from the details that were offered in these when live. As reported by Surrenderat20, Zeri will be known as The Spark of Zaun, and will be a marksman champ who "channels her electric magic to charge herself and her custom-crafted gun". We don't know anything about her abilities beyond a few hints in the bio and universe info, but you can check out a fuller description in Zeri's section below. Patch 12.2 also brings a whole bunch of new champion skins. Akshan and Janna are getting Crystal Rose skins, while Elise is getting a Withered Rose style. Then there are plenty of Porcelain and Firecracker skins to go around for others. You can take a look at all of these in the notes below. PCGamesN Monday, January 10, 2022 7:13 AM Despite unveiling the Ayaneo Next at CES 2022 adjacent to AMD's latest mobile Rembrant APUs, the company behind the handheld PC originally announced that the device would use a current-generation Ryzen 7 5800U. This was to ensure it'll be "available to gamers as soon as possible," but it turns out that Ayaneo has pulled a bait and switch, as the Next will instead use a newer platform and a Zen 3+ update could be on the cards for later this year. According to Ayaneo's CEO, Arthur Zhang, the Next will use a Ryzen 7 5825U, a chip that was announced at CES alongside AMD's Ryzen 6000. Codenamed 'Barcelo-U', Zhang also says the company was asked to keep the chip a secret, which explains the portable gaming PC's delayed announcement and use of the term 'Advance 5800U'. It's worth noting that only the base and the pro versions of the Next will use the Ryzen 7 5825U, while the Advanced will seemingly stick with the Ryzen 7 5800U. In terms of specs, the 5825U beats the 5800U by 100Mhz, with boost clock speeds reaching 4.5GHz. However, the new chip on the block's GPU clocks in at 1.8GHz, 200Mhz less than the Zen 3 Cezanne APU. PCGamesN Monday, January 10, 2022 6:56 AM When Epic Games announced its Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) service would be officially supported on the Steam Deck, the company said it was possible to "activate anti-cheat support for Linux via Wine or Proton with just a few clicks". Unfortunately, according to a developer of Warhammer: Vermintide 2, this seemingly isn't the case. In a Steam discussion thread (via GamingOnLinux), Fatshark staff member Hedge revealed that there are in fact two versions of EAC: EOS (Epic Online Services) and non-EOS. Hedge says this presents a problem for some developers who want their games to run on the Steam Deck, because "most games historically use Non-EOS EAC. It's the one Vermintide 2 uses as well. Epic only added Proton support for the EOS version of EAC. Therefore, in order to implement Proton support for Vermintide 2, a huge amount of reworking of the EAC implementation would be required". Dead by Daylight developer Behaviour Interactive previously alluded to this issue back in October, leading to concerns that it and other popular Steam games may not work on the Steam Deck at launch (if at all). Worse still, BattlEye, another popular third-party anti-cheat service, is also creating issues for games like DayZ, which may not work on the Steam Deck. PCGamesN Monday, January 10, 2022 6:46 AM Final Fantasy XIV has had a few patches since Endwalker recently released, though it looks like we'll have a better idea of how things will look in the build-up to the MMORPG's next big expansion next month. As reported and translated by Siliconera and Aitai Kimochi, director Naoki Yoshida recently appeared on a Radio Mog Station broadcast to explain that the team will reveal details on future updates leading towards the next expansion in late February. Krile and Thancred will also be prominent figures in upcoming story updates, reportedly. Yoshida additionally says that there could be some drastic changes that may surprise you, though he didn't elaborate further. We've reached out to Square Enix for more information on the information dump and will update this story if we hear back. Square Enix initially delayed FFXIV's Endwalker expansion for two weeks last year. While the game's Christmas-themed Starlight Celebration and New Year-themed Heavensturn events still launched at the same time, updates 6.01 and 6.05 - featuring the normal and Savage versions of the Pandaemonium raid, respectively - had to be pushed back. Outside of Endwalker's more immediate patches, though, we don't have much to go on regarding FFXIV's roadmap. RELATED LINKS: The best MMOs on PC, FFXIV Reaper job guide, FFXIV Sage job guide |
PCGamesN Monday, January 10, 2022 5:16 AM So, you want to know about the best Total War games? Shogun: Total War released in June 2000, which means the venerable strategy series has been going for over 20 years now. That's longer than iPhones, broadband, and most memes. There have been 14 games in that time - not counting mobile spin-offs or the cancelled and underrated Total War: Arena. It's a lot to keep track of. Enter: us. If you've ever been curious about this strategy games stalwart, look no further. We've put together a list of the best and most essential Total War games, from Shogun to Three Kingdoms via the fantastical foray that is Warhammer. It is, of course, impossible to crown one single Total War game the 'best', because - especially since Warhammer - they do so many different things, with their various settings affecting the feel of their campaigns and tactical battles. So instead, we'll walk you through what each of our picks does well and differently from the other games in the series, and why they may be regarded as 'essential' - beloved by fans and yet to be truly imitated by any other game in the series, or even in all of gaming. PCGamesN Monday, January 10, 2022 5:25 AM So, you want to know about the best Warhammer games? Or perhaps you're eyeing up some Warhammer 40k games? Games Workshop has a complicated history with licensing their tabletop worlds. The company has been quite reserved about it in the past - even despite some very high-profile successes in the early days - but even when it finally started to open the gates more generally it took a while for the quality to match the demand. Thankfully, things are getting better, and as things get better more Warhammer and Warhammer 40,000 games are starting to appear that are worth checking out if you're fans of either of Games Workshops' iconic tabletop settings. With that in mind, we've compiled a round-up our top picks of games from fantasy land, as well as the grim darkness of the far future. We were going to keep it 50/50 but to be honest there are far less fantasy games than 40k games, and far more mediocre choices at that. We've also not strictly speaking gone for the 'best of the best', although most of these options are considered pretty good; we've chosen notable titles that are worth highlighting for more specific reasons as well. PCGamesN Monday, January 10, 2022 5:07 AM So, you want to know about political games? Political simulations often have the same alluring attraction as war games and strategy games. The average person likes to test their mental prowess to see if they can do better than their real-world counterparts, or perhaps exert some control over a digital space that resembles their own situation as a way of coping with life's trials. Either way, there is an addictive quality to them that's unlike the rush you get from shooters or RPGs, although the escapism is no less real. Whether you're setting economic and trade policies, standing strong on the international stage, or leading a nation through a war or some other crises, there's plenty of things to keep an eye on in a genre that attempts to model every facet of what goes into running a nation. For our list of top political game picks, we've more or less focused on government simulation games rather than games that instead try to recreate or push a specific political agenda - there's plenty of really interesting options in that latter category, such as Papers Please or America's Army, but they deserve a dedicated piece. That said, we have included one or two exceptions that really stand-out. Enjoy! |
PCGamesN Monday, January 10, 2022 6:42 AM The roguelike is just as varied and increasingly approachable a genre as any other. The finest roguelikes retain their popularity for years after release, so you should expect to see a healthy mix of classics and newcomers among our picks. And while roguelike games are renowned for their hardcore nature, we continue to see developers attempt to open the genre up to new players and create novel hybrids, like strategy roguelikes, shooter roguelikes, and card battler roguelikes. Plus, know that we're not going to split hairs here over what's a roguelike and what's a roguelite – we just want to share some of our all-time favourites with you lot, our lovely readers. So, without further delay, here are the best roguelike games on PC for various genres, from dungeon crawlers to strategy games. RELATED LINKS: Hades Review, Best RPGs, Best indie games |
PCGamesN Monday, January 10, 2022 7:45 AM What are the best card games like Hearthstone? It is not a question we would have been asking a few years ago, when some basic ports of paper-based systems and some minigames in larger titles were all we had access to. Now, there are heaps of online card battle games vying to be among the best card games on PC - it is one of the quickest growing genres in the industry. The best card games offer players a rich and constantly shifting meta, potentially limitless replayability, and are approachable to boot - so it is not hard to see why card games have taken off in recent years. What that means is somebody (us) needs to lay down the objective truth (subjective opinion) on which are best card games on PC (the ones we enjoy the most). We will cover everything from the biggest player in the genre today (you will never guess which that is), the best ports from paper, the up-and-comers you might not have heard of, and some of the best free card games out there. PCGamesN Monday, January 10, 2022 5:29 AM Enjoying gaming's latest ghost game phenomenon, Phasmophobia? We can all agree that ghost games are better played together, right? That way, you can work together with your pals online and if things go south, sacrifice them and run away to safety. However, Phasmophobia isn't just a ghost game, it's also a detective game and a survival game, so it begs the question – are there other games like Phasmophobia? There's a lot to love in this new entry into horror games, whether that's the online co-op, the old-school investigative work, or the increasingly angry ghosts who don't want messing with their haunt. So, we've put together a mishmashed list of ghost games and games like Phasmophobia, that have either all or at least a few of Phasmophobia's key ingredients. If you enjoy piecing together clues while evading evil spirits, surviving with your team, and straightening your deerstalker as you hunt for clues and deduce hidden messages, then you've come to the right place. Here are the best games like Phasmophobia on PC. RELATED LINKS: The best horror games on PC, The best VR games |
PCGamesN Monday, January 10, 2022 5:31 AM What are the best ninja games on PC? Sneaking through the shadows, lithely climbing and dashing your way to an unsuspecting target; clashing swords with a rival in a climactic battle; methodically planning your next move to catch the enemy unaware. There are a lot of reasons why ninja games are so appealing. As gamers, we revel in fantasies of power and experiences out of our reach, and ninja games are pretty high on the list of "I wish I could do that". Luckily, some of the best PC games let you play ninja. In fact, it's a pretty crowded genre, and hacking through the chaff with a katana will only get you so far. In order to make the search a bit easier, we've gone ahead and curated this list of eight of the best Ninja games, plus two upcoming titles, that will sate your inner ninja. Plenty of classics are present, like 3D stealth sims, but we have also included some off-the-wall games to illustrate just how varied the ninja scene is. Go on, take a look below. We'll see you on the other side of the shadows. |
PCGamesN Monday, January 10, 2022 7:55 AM Deciding on the very best indie games on PC is a task that involves some painful exclusion. The great indie boom triggered by digital distribution a decade ago turned out to be more of a Big Bang, firing small-team development into a plethora of directions that now defy simple categorisation. The sheer volume is intimidating, so we have plenty to choose from when compiling our list of the best indie games. Perhaps too much. But we should take stock, from time to time, to appreciate everything publisher-less development has given us. Some of the games listed below were built in a weekend by first-time coders, while others were crafted by former triple-A creators who've instilled their independent work with the same technical standards. They barely have anything in common but a healthy dose of idiosyncrasy and ideas that make Steam worth spelunking. So what is our final shortlist of the finest indies around? It's got everything, from puzzle games to narrative wonders, through pixelart games and the most gorgeous, graphically detailed gems. You're going to want to play each and every one.
