PUBG is now free-to-play, but you can't play it yet

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds - wait, sorry, I mean PUBG: Battlegrounds - is now free-to-play. Just don't expect to actually be able to, you know, play it yet. Servers are down for 38 hours of maintenance ahead of the official free launch on January 12, but you can go ahead and download the game ahead of the release.

You can head over to Steam (or the Xbox or PlayStation stores) to grab PUBG for yourself and start downloading now. With maintenance expected to last 38 hours, PC servers should be back online at 11pm PST on January 11, or 3am EST / 8am GMT on January 12, giving you ample time to get ready to drop. (Console servers will be up one hour later worldwide, according to the patch notes.)

The free-to-play release coincides with the launch of patch 15.2, which introduces an array of new tutorial and training options, including a bot match that pits you against 99 AI opponents. The other big addition is tactical gear, an option which lets you give up your primary weapon slot in favour of a powerful strategic gadget, like a drone or EMT gear.

Phasmophobia update adds a new photo evidence priority system

Phasmophobia's festive-themed decorations might have just been swept away with the ghost game's latest update, but there are still new features and changes to check out as we march into this new year. Kinetic Games has just dropped a new update that adds a handful of gameplay changes and fixes, among them a new feature that ranks a key evidence type by what's captured in it.

In today's Phasmophobia patch - catchily titled 'Update v0.5.1.1' - there's a new feature that adds "a priority system for the photo evidence detection". This ranks the content of the photo evidence in the following priority order, which goes from top to bottom: ghost, bone, fingerprints, footprints, dead body, interactions, cursed items, dirty water.

The beauty of this, it seems, is that you should find the most important subjects of your snaps will now be identified and given top billing more accurately. With photo evidence yielding monetary rewards in-game, and star ratings varying depending on what you snapped, this change could be really handy in streamlining the whole mechanic. For example, if you captured a photo of a ghost that also counts as a picture of an interaction, the game will now prize the fact that it was an image of a ghost over being one of a (lesser) interaction.

Rainbow Six Siege is changing directors again

Just over two years after the last shake-up in Rainbow Six Siege's creative leadership, another big change is coming. Creative director Leroy Athanassoff has announced that he's leaving Siege to work on other projects at Ubisoft. Alexander Karpazis will be promoted from his position as art director into the creative director role.

"I wanted to let you know that due to personal reasons, I will be leaving my role of creative director on Siege to pursue other opportunities at Ubisoft," Athanassoff says in a message to players. "This isn't a decision I make lightly - I love this game and this community, and I'm so proud of everything our team has accomplished together over the last two years - but I'm confident that it's the right one, and the team has given me their full support."

"I'm truly thankful for Leroy's mentorship over the years," Karpazis says in the same post. "He's taught me what exemplary leadership, creativity, and passion look like in the position of creative director. Leroy's hard work will be visible in future seasons as the team and I prepare for one of the most ambitious years in Siege's history. I'm extremely humbled by the team's trust in me, and I hope to earn the trust of the community in my new role as well."

Here's your first good look at DnD game Neverwinter's Dragonbone Vale

Neverwinter's next module is nearly here. Dragonborn Vale comes to the DnD MMORPG's PC version tomorrow, signalling Valindra Shadowmantle and the Cult of the Dragon's move to bring "undeath" to dragons across Faerûn and beyond using an ancient artefact that's come into their possession. The module ushers in the new Adventure Zone, as well as Heroic Encounters, and even a grappling-hook mechanic that lets you traverse around the game's world in a whole new way - and we've now got our first good look at Dragonborn Vale up close.

To fend off the Cult and protect the Sword Coast from its plans, players will need to gather with the allied factions of Protector's Enclave under the leadership of esteemed wizard Elminster Aumar. A voiceover introduces us to the story's setting - a mysterious, mountainous region "nestled in plain sight yet high enough to discourage prying eyes". There are bridges that divide the zone into the Sword Mountains' four distinctive areas, starting with Wyrmbone Marrows in the south, reaching up through Quellwater Tarn, Scaleblight Summit, and Whetstone Thicket.

Leader Etrion has taken the Emerald Enclave - which players might remember from days of Neverwinter past - to Whetstone Thicket, which lies roughly to the northeast of the region revealed in the clip below. As its name suggests, this is a wooded region home to looming pine trees, stone cliffs, and mist. Think of Skyrim's yawning, rocky vales and you'll be close.

This Half-Life mod will swap Gordon Freeman for Spyro the Dragon

A Half-Life fan is working on a mod that gives Gordon Freeman the old heave-ho in favour of Spyro the Dragon. There are several demos for the mod on ModDB or the Half-Life: Year of the Dragon website. As ever, though, mod with caution and keep in mind that the mod isn't endorsed by Activision Blizzard or Valve.

The Half-Life: Year of the Dragon mod has been in the works since 2018, though there's a good reason for that. As reported by Kotaku, this mod doesn't simply replace Freeman with the purple dragon but changes the way the game is played, too. Spyro is coming with his moveset from the original games, so players will be able to charge around and headbutt whatever's in the dragon's way. The mod will also add some extra abilities and items for variety alongside the tools for fans to build their own campaign.

The story overview of the mod is that Spyro has jumped through a portal and has wound up stuck in the Black Mesa Research Facility. The modder says they don't plan on featuring the entire Half-Life campaign as it wouldn't be enjoyable. Instead, there'll be a hub world that's typical of a Spyro game with "ten or so" chapters to play through.

Serious Sam: Siberian Mayhem is a new FPS that hits Steam in 15 days

Publisher Devolver DIgital teased the sudden launch of a brand-new Serious Sam game last week, and now we know what to expect. Serious Sam: Siberian Mayhem is a standalone FPS game that takes Sam to the heart of Russia in his fight against General Brand and the Mental army, and it's set to launch later this month.

Siberian Mayhem sounds like it'll be tight in scope, with only five levels, but the newly-listed Steam page notes side missions, a gang of new characters to meet, and plenty of opportunity for exploration, so it looks like there's more to those levels than just linear running and gunning. Though, of course, the trailer confirms there's plenty of running and gunning to be done, including weapons like the AK and a futuristic crossbow.

There's no word on price yet, but Siberian Mayhem is due to launch on Steam on January 25. The game is a co-development project between the Serious Sam creators at Croteam and new Russian developer Timelock Studio.

Monster Hunter Rise PC review – happy hunting

Monster Hunter Rise is the best Monster Hunter game to date. It maintains everything that makes World so fun to play, makes meaningful tweaks to the flow of combat, and adds plenty of its own flavour with Palamutes, new traversal mechanics, and gorgeous environments that are teeming with nods to Japanese folklore. And now it's on PC (you can buy it here, coincidentally) we can enjoy it all with the benefit of faster frame rates and higher resolutions.

Rise kicks off in traditional Monster Hunter fashion: a dangerous phenomenon is making the local wildlife go berserk and it's up to you to fix it. This time you're up against 'the Rampage', which is causing enraged monsters to stampede in huge numbers, and it's headed towards your home village of Kamura. Despite being a newly minted hunter, the village chief has charged you with investigating what's causing the Rampage and stopping it before it threatens your home.

Kamura acts as your main hub, and it's here where you'll pick up new quests, trade goods, craft new weapons and armour, and chat with fellow villagers. So far, so Monster Hunter. However, your village also has an area called the Buddy Plaza that's dedicated to your cadre of Palicoes, as well as the new Palamutes. While previous Monster Hunter games pair you with the cat-like Palicoes, Rise introduces us to Palamutes, faithful canine companions who double up as noble steeds and fierce warriors during hunts. Palamutes inject some much-needed pace into the more tedious parts of a hunt, reducing both the time it takes to chase monsters between areas and letting you sharpen tools while on the move.

GTA publisher buys mobile games giant Zynga for $12.7 billion

Grand Theft Auto publisher Take-Two has announced plans to acquire Zynga, the developer of social games like Farmville and Words With Friends, in a record-setting deal worth $12.7 billion (£9.4 billion). The acquisition will be finalised some time before July, subject to approval by regulatory authorities.

The acquisition makes Take-Two among the world's biggest publishers of mobile games, and the company plans to use the deal as a bridge into "growth markets" including India and the Middle East, according to a press release. That'll be helped along by Zynga's Chartboost advertising system and its "diverse array of titles that focus on many of the most popular genres in mobile gaming, including casual, hyper-casual, lifestyle, mid-core, puzzle, social casino, and sports games."

"This strategic combination brings together our best-in-class console and PC franchises, with a market-leading, diversified mobile publishing platform that has a rich history of innovation and creativity," Take-Two CEO and chairman Strauss Zelnick says in the release. "Zynga also has a highly talented and deeply experienced team, and we look forward to welcoming them into the Take-Two family in the coming months."

A new Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 GPU with 12GB of VRAM may be revealed tomorrow

Despite plans to launch the GeForce RTX 3050 and RTX 3090 Ti GPUs in a few weeks time, it appears that Nvidia is set to reveal yet another graphics card as early as tomorrow. The RTX 3080 12GB was previously thought to be indefinitely postponed, but sources close to Wccftech claim we'll get our first official look at the card on January 11.

If the RTX 3080 is revealed tomorrow, it will be the second Nvidia GPU in recent memory to release with a minimal amount of fanfare. As such, we're concerned that this card will suffer the same fate as the RTX 2060 12GB, with a reveal and release that's nothing short of a disappointing mess. From its December launch onwards, the RTX 2060 12GB has remained hard to find, with Nvidia compounding availability issues by deciding not to manufacture a Founders Edition at the last minute.

Hopefully, interest from board partners like Gigabyte, who were previously rumoured to have 16 custom designs on the cards for the RTX 3080 12GB and RTX 3070 Ti 16GB, can help alleviate supply issues. That said, the ongoing chip shortage and continued interest from crypto miners in the best graphics cards will undoubtedly have a large impact.

League of Legends patch 12.2 notes – New Champion Zeri, Crystal Rose, Withered Rose, Porcelain, Firecracker skins

2022 is here, League of Legends fans, which means another year packed with gameplay updates, new champions to welcome to the MOBA game, and plenty of new skins. League of Legends patch 12.1 has headed to live servers, bringing a handful of item and champ changes and some snazzy new Elderwood skins. Now, it's time to see what the second patch of the Season 12 League of Legends patch schedule will bring.

The big news for 12.2 is the arrival of brand-new champion, Zeri. It seems she might have made a slightly premature debut as her universe and biography pages (which went live January 4) appear to have now been taken down, though we have an idea of what she's all about from the details that were offered in these when live. As reported by Surrenderat20, Zeri will be known as The Spark of Zaun, and will be a marksman champ who "channels her electric magic to charge herself and her custom-crafted gun". We don't know anything about her abilities beyond a few hints in the bio and universe info, but you can check out a fuller description in Zeri's section below.

Patch 12.2 also brings a whole bunch of new champion skins. Akshan and Janna are getting Crystal Rose skins, while Elise is getting a Withered Rose style. Then there are plenty of Porcelain and Firecracker skins to go around for others. You can take a look at all of these in the notes below.

The best hacking games on PC in 2022

Looking for a list of the best hacking games on PC? Game developers have long valued the 'hacker ethic' — the will and skill to grab a game by the scruff of its code, rip it apart, and put the pieces together in a new way.

Id Software prioritized the nascent modding community when they were creating Doom, Valve courted it from Half-Life onward and the entirety of the MOBA genre stems from folks futzing with Warcraft III.

Of course, most players are just that: players. We see numbers and letters in a line of code; not meaning. But, there's a lineage of games that have sought to deliver the fantasy of being in complete command of a computer's functions; of using that control to wreak destruction, or to avert it. Some of these games present a simulation of hacking, with the player inputting real lines of code. Others, though, abstract hacking to the point that it becomes a magical ability you can use with the press of a button. We like both, and you'll find both represented in our hacking games list below.

As we've already seen from the demo, the PC version of Monster Hunter Rise spruces itself up considerably from the Nintendo Switch original. To whit, Monster Hunter Rise's PC requirements go even lower than World's, only asking for a GT 1030 or Radeon RX 550 at minimum.

I had about a week where I was completely by myself this year, and I spent it being Spidey and self-yeeting around New York. It's a great game on many levels, and I especially liked that one of the outfits you can unlock through story missions is a scarf and ear warmers. Mostly though, it's just made me think that web-swinging is the most fun way to get around in games, and more games should do it. By "more games", I mean "every game".

I briefly posted before the new year about WorldBox - God Simulator, and Graham wrote about it over the weekend, too. It is a world simulation game that has no resource costs or goals, just simulated events. You make a world, plop some animals and fantasy races into it (and if you want, a bunch of dragons and wizards) and see what happens. I cannot stop playing it. And I wanted to give some more detailed examples of how the simulation works, especially if you just leave it running with little intervention.

I am a WorldBox scientist, you see (though merely a BSc at the moment), and my first experiments suggest that every civilisation, along a long enough time scale, is basically doomed. Big 2022 energy. In the case of WorldBox, this may be because at some stage the scientist running the experiment will get bored and drop in e.g. a tornado. That's okay, because there are almost infinite experiments to run. I hope that isn't how the simulation I am living in is being run. Oh no. Don't think about it.

Valornat Episode 4 CinematicIt's been some time since we were treated to a Valorant cinematic. Not an agent reveal cinematic, but a lore revealing one. The previous cinematic, Duality, revealed a lot about the world of Riot Games' tactical shooter. More accurately, the worlds. This latest Valorant Episode 4 cinematic trailer, Warm Up, is less of a revelation, but it's always enjoyable to see the agents interacting with one another. I expected to see Valorant's new Episode 4 agent, Neon, stepping into the cinematic to show off her lightning moves. But alas, she doesn't feature. If you missed the reveal trailer for Neon, you can check it out here to see her abilities in action. The short of it is she's fast, can shoot lightning from her fingers, and has the ability to slide around corners at high speed.   Valorant Episode 3 ends on January 11. So, Episode 4, which will be titled Disruption, should release immediately after that. Along with the new agent, Episode 4 will include some map changes, agent balanc...

Armored Core 6 Leaked FeatureThe Armored Core series is one of the most iconic mecha franchises in gaming, but it has been almost a decade since the last main series installment leaving its future unclear. That is, until today. A recent consumer survey sent out by developer FromSoftware appears to have leaked the existence of an Armored Core 6. The screenshots were posted on the Resetera forums by user Red Liquorice. They explained in the post that they had taken part in "a consumer survey about a new Armoured Core game with a description, screenshots, and two 30 second-ish videos of gameplay." This original post appeared on Saturday with a follow-up post today revealing the screenshots.   Is Armored Core 6 in the works? The text section of the post describes the upcoming game as "a TPS (third-person shooter) mecha action title." It will take place on the planet Bashtar, with the story centered around an unknown substance that once caused a cosmic catastrophe that engulfed the surro...

air-clenz-gaming-monitor-anti-microbe-purifier-cleaning-anti-germPeople have been forced to make some big changes over the past couple of years with the pandemic still raging around the globe. Many now work remote to avoid the risks that come with going to a potentially hazardous workplace. It's more than understandable and actually has been beneficial for some people. However, it isn't necessarily a long-term solution for many, and that's a problem. But Air-Clenz's anti-germ monitor could solve that problem. At CES 2022, Air-Clenz, an air purification company, revealed its idea for an anti-germ monitor that filters the air. It's an interesting idea and certainly makes sense. Monitors are pretty gross when you think about it, especially since they can collect all sorts of germs from throughout the day. From coughs and sneezes, to simply breathing on your display, you're unknowingly spreading a load of germs around the place.   Keeping the airways clean Air-Clenz's concept for an anti-germ monitor is ...

Warzone Pacific best Type 100 ClassThe launch of Call of Duty: Vanguard Season One saw the debut of Warzone Pacific and the highly anticipated Caldera map. Also, the integration saw the weapon pool expand and add even more weapons to choose from. So far, the MP40 has been the front-runner in the secondary weapon meta. However, there are plenty of other powerful submachine guns to choose from. One option is the Type 100, and applying the best attachments will allow you to build a dominant class to take to your next Warzone Pacific match. Already, the Type 100 has a respectable amount accuracy and control to its name. This class will focus on bumping up the damage and range to make the weapon as deadly as possible. Similarly, accuracy will be maximized to take advantage of the added damage.   Call of Duty: Warzone Pacific Type 100 class Muzzle: Mercury Silencer Barrel: Shiraishi 374mm Underbarrel: Carver Foregrip Stock: Shiraishi T100 Magazine: Russian Short 36 Round Mags Ammunition Type: Lengthened Rear Grip: Fa...

Monster Hunter Rise Pc Review 1Monster Hunter Rise is kind of weird when placed directly beside Monster Hunter World. There's more variety to the monsters, but the game doesn't demand nearly as much of your time. It's also a port of a Switch game, so it doesn't look as good as the previous in certain ways. People have been playing World game on PC for a while now, and may find the visual differences jarring. The game itself also feels lighter and breezier, with plenty of new mechanics and lots of the trademark action the series is known for. Rise is also a great port, all things considered. Let's get hunting. Right off the bat, the aesthetic of Monster Hunter Rise is decidedly Japanese (even more so than usual). You create your hunter and are dropped into Kamura Village.  A horde of monsters, led by a single super-strong monster that strengthens itself by eating its members, is periodically attacking the village. It's up to you and, well, everyone else playing the game, to figh...
