Kotaku Friday, February 25, 2022 5:15 PM If there's one regard wherein Horizon Forbidden West should be deemed Horizon Forbidden Best, it's the optional stuff. Kotaku Friday, February 25, 2022 4:55 PM When faced with an overwhelming adversary, sometimes the only option is to fight dirty. Kotaku Friday, February 25, 2022 1:05 PM The moment has come. After years of anticipation, Elden Ring finally leaps from the wispy plane of imagination to the very real plane of today's gaming consoles and PCs. PCGamesN Friday, February 25, 2022 6:52 PM Typically when we talk about 'accuracy' as it relates to retro game emulation, it's about how closely modern software can replicate the functions of retro hardware, exactly as those machines worked back in the day. But when we start talking about light guns, 'accuracy' gets a whole new meaning, and it turns out that sometimes the only way to improve accuracy is to reduce accuracy. This month's 0.241 MAME release includes a number of improvements to NES emulation, as well as the technologically-related Vs. System and PlayChoice-10 arcade machines. The devs note that "you'll have a better experience with the Zapper light gun" in this update, which means we're seeing patch notes like "made Zapper light gun sensor fuzzier". "The real Zapper wasn't even close to pixel-accurate (as you would expect from low-cost 1985 tech), so this was a case of MAME being 'too good'," as MAME developer arbee37 explains in a Reddit post. "Tests on hardware done by the NESDev people have shown how good the Zapper actually is, and MAME now conforms to that." |
PCGamesN Friday, February 25, 2022 5:47 PM Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker has come and gone, wrapping up a decade's worth of story threads that have been weaving their way through the MMORPG. We've already got some new content patches introducing the Pandaemonium raid, but the big next step is 6.1. The devs already revealed a few details on 6.1 in the last big Live Letter, but a fresh broadcast breaking down much more information is set to air in one week's time Letter from the Producer Live Part LXIX is set to air on Friday, March 4 at 3am PST / 6am EST / 11am GMT via YouTube and Twitch. Unlike recent major Live Letters, there will be no live interpretation into English this time. However, bullet-point slides breaking down the features of the new 6.1 patch will be shown in English, and members of the FFXIV Discord will likely provide their usual fan translations of the developer commentary. FFXIV patch is currently targeted for release in April, as the devs revealed in the last Live Letter. We will, of course, get a new set of main scenario quests - particularly notable this time around, as it'll be our first steps to the new story post-Endwalker - as well as the first Alliance Raid for this patch series, new tribe quests (the devs are ditching the 'beast' terminology going forward), and more. PCGamesN Friday, February 25, 2022 5:42 PM The upcoming expansion for roguelike action game Risk of Rain 2 will add an all-new endless mode called Simulacrum. The developers have revealed the new mode in a lengthy gameplay video that also shows off one of the new survivors coming with the expansion, which is officially titled Survivors of the Void. First off, though, is Simulacrum, a new endless wave-based mode that takes place inside a massive computer simulation. According to the lore, the simulation is meant to assess the threats posed by some of Risk of Rain 2's locations, but what that boils down to for players is a series of familiar locations that each has a fresh spin on it - they're the places you know, "yet somehow… different", developer Hopoo Games says. You'll have to take on increasingly challenging waves of enemies, either solo or in co-op with friends, and there's a tough boss that'll spawn every five waves. Some waves will have mutators that make the fight a bit tougher, but after each one you'll all have the chance to pick from three items in a Void Potential. That'll give you an extra bit of control over your build as the waves get harder and harder. PCGamesN Friday, February 25, 2022 3:40 PM Another round of free DLC is available now for the freshly launched zombie game Dying Light 2, adding a new themed gear set to Aiden Caldwell's bulging duffle bag. This new set is the Ronin Pack, and like the first free DLC, it's confusingly split into three separate Steam entries you'll have to add to your account individually. Part one of the Ronin pack launched February 21 and includes a Survivor's Handcrafted Jacket, Handcrafted Breeches, and Headcrafted Trainers. The outfit is based on a grey, white, and red theme that's accented in gold, a colour scheme that's carried over into part two of the pack, which includes handcrafted guards, mask, and mitts. That piece launched February 23. The third chunk of the Ronin DLC pack, available now, is the Wise Katana unique sword. As you might imagine, this is a handy tool to have on hand in the streets of Villedor, which are crawling with undead monsters eager to yank off your limbs. The Wise Katana features a red-wrapped handle and a weighty looking blade, which should help keep virals at bay. PCGamesN Friday, February 25, 2022 2:05 PM The Steam Deck is finally here, and we all want to know one thing: What's Gabe Newell playing on it? Valve's big boss has been giving out plenty of interviews ahead of the Deck's launch, and GabeN says he's been pouring the hours in on the critically-acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV. "One of my sons got into Final Fantasy," Newell tells IGN. "I sorta got burned out on World of Warcraft. It got to the point where they'd introduce a new level cap, and I'd be like 'ah!' and I'd start playing for about ten minutes and my brain would melt down. So I haven't played an MMO for a while, but one of my sons was into Final Fantasy. And he was mad at the people he'd go raiding with, so he was like 'Okay, I need a minion. Dad, come be my minion. Be my healer who doesn't let me die when I'm tanking.' So I started playing with him, and then I've been playing a ton of it on the Deck." FFXIV might just be the best choice for MMO gaming on the Steam Deck, given the game's robust controller support, and long history of playability on console platforms. Excellent choice, Gabe. (And Gabe's son.) RELATED LINKS: The best MMOs on PC, FFXIV Reaper job guide, FFXIV Sage job guide |
PCGamesN Friday, February 25, 2022 1:20 PM The Steam Deck release date is upon us, and Valve has one last surprise in store: a new free game set in the Portal and Half-Life universe, designed to show off the new features of the portable machine. Aperture Desk Job seems to follow in the footsteps of previous demos like Aperture Hand Lab and The Lab, giving a bite-sized demonstration of a bit of new Valve hardware. Aperture Desk Job launches for free on March 1 via Steam, and while Valve says it's "designed as a free playable short for Valve's new Steam Deck" and will "walk you through the handheld's controls and features", it's unclear whether you'll actually need a Deck to play it. Presumably, you could just play it with regular PC controls and pretend you're using a portable. It'll just be less fun. Either way, Valve wants you to "lower your expectations", because "this is not a sequel to Portal". It is, as the name implies, simply set inside Portal's Aperture Science. |
PCGamesN Friday, February 25, 2022 4:11 PM Xûr is Destiny 2's Exotic gear merchant. He appears every weekend to sell the game's most coveted items in exchange for Legendary shards, but if you're a casual player with limited shards to spend, it can be hard to know which of his wares is most worth your investment. That's where we come in. As of June 12, 2020, it appears that Xûr is back to providing random rolls - so the Exotic merchant is providing more excitement than he has in a long time. Xûr appears every Friday at 9am PST / 12pm EST / 5pm GMT, and will stick around until the Tuesday reset. We'll update this guide shortly after he arrives, so if you're reading this, you need only read on to learn where he is, and which are the best items he's selling this week. Now we're in Beyond Light territory, but Xûr's first appearances have been at the usual spots - so maybe don't expect too many surprises from the merchant in the new year of Destiny content. Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Friday, February 25, 2022 2:01 PM Moody new adventure game Who's Lila? has an interesting alternative to selecting dialogue options: pulling faces. And you really have to pull the face. Drag your fella's facial features around to form expressions, and that emotion will be the foundation of his behaviour in conversation. It's an interesting challenge on a timer, and the intentional performance of emotion feels perfectly sinister when maybe we know a little too much about a missing person. Who's Lila? does have a demo, so you can pull some faces yourself. |

Siliconera Friday, February 25, 2022 3:00 PM With the release of Elden Ring, our minds are on our experiences with the fearsome, memorable foes of the developers' releases. Dark Souls! Demon's Souls! Sekiro! So many games, so many bosses. What do you think is the best FromSoftware boss? Here are some of our picks. While this pick might be somewhat predictable, I absolutely adore the Cleric Beast fight in Bloodborne. Sure, Dark Souls has a plethora of memorable bosses! The Princes Lothric and Lorian fight were absolutely incredible. Gwyn, Lord of Cinder is iconic. But there is something about how the Cleric Beast fight comes together to set the tone of Bloodborne. This includes how the fight starts with a bloodcurdling scream while you explore Yharnam proper. The Cleric Beast fight just has just about everything you'd want, at least tonally, from a FromSoftware boss. Incredible design, a tight arena, and an incredible score. — Kazuma I have a special affection for Demon's Souls' Tower Knight, boss of the Boletarian Palace (Area 1-2). Seeing the knight for the first time really drove home the scale of the encounters in a way that not even huge games like the God of War series hadn't managed to that point. It really felt like you were just a little guy, and this huge fellow was here to mess your stuff up. That's frankly an unforgettable first impression. Obviously, more creative and interesting bosses have been added since then! But the Tower Knight continues to feel like the poster boss for the Soulsborne experience in my mind. It's as inextricable from that mystique as poison swamps. — Josh I think there's a good reason why the Ornstein and Smough boss fight from Dark Souls is so iconic. It's the first fight in the series with two unique boss enemies. It's a profoundly different match-up that requires players to choose their moves carefully. Unlike past multi-boss fights like the Maneaters in Demon's Souls or Bell Gargoyles in Dark Souls, there's a sense of choice in which boss to take down first. I think it's also one of the main reasons why a lot of people struggled to get out of Anor Londo, myself included. But that struggle, death after death of spawning at that bonfire in that tiny room, rushing to the main hall while avoiding the giant knights, summoning Solaire and praying that he didn't get absolutely trashed? It was my first true Soulsborne experience. And beating the duo is made even sweeter when you finally leave Anor Londo after the fight. — Andrew When I see FromSoftware, I'll always think about Armored Core first. And the most memorable bosses from the series are Nine-Ball and its derivatives, which appeared in most of the series' titles. Another version of Nine-Ball Seraph also appeared in the From-developed crossover title, Another Century's Episode: R. It was always a great challenge to fight the red agile mech, even with units from other franchises in the crossover game. And I'll also always remember the iconic theme song. "D-D-Destroy Nine-Ball." — Kite What do you think is the best FromSoftware boss? Let us know in the comments or on Twitter! And read our other handy roundtables for more thoughts from the Siliconera team. The post What's the Best FromSoftware Boss? appeared first on Siliconera. |

PC Invasion - FeedDDD Friday, February 25, 2022 5:32 PM FromSoftware doesn't exactly have the best track record when it comes to PC releases. The original Dark Souls had a port that was so rough most people didn't even consider it playable without mods. Dark Souls II also had some significant issues. But those were years ago. When I started Elden Ring, I certainly wasn't expecting to be hit with a bunch of performance issues that made my time with the game notably worse. The game's release is a momentous occasion. There's something special about jumping into a Souls game when it's brand new, experiencing what it has to offer. But this time? I'm going to be waiting for some performance fixes before I start playing Elden Ring again. Upon starting Elden Ring, everything was fine. After squeaking past the game's first boss (the ugly character creator), I was dropped into the starting area. As this was a closed-in space, I didn't even realize that there were framerate issues at first. But ... |
PC Invasion - FeedDDD Friday, February 25, 2022 5:30 PM Chaos Dungeons are the first endgame activity that you encounter in Lost Ark. As the name suggests, they are chaotic. Waves of enemies will spawn and swarm you. You need to wipe them out as quickly and efficiently as possible. Don't be intimidated by Chaos Dungeons, though. They're very easy to complete, and you don't need any advice on getting the job done. What this guide will do is suggest a few tricks to help you quickly get the most loot out of Chaos Dungeons. Before entering a Chaos Dungeon, you should make sure you have a build that is designed to deal area effect damage. Skills that group up enemies and have large attack areas are ideal. Look at the tripod modifiers in your skills, because they can significantly change or improve your abilities. The Soulfist's Crippling Barrier is a perfect example of this. You can take a tier one tripod that reduces its cooldown by five seconds. There's also a tier two tripod that increases damage by 10%, and the tier thr... |
PC Invasion - FeedDDD Friday, February 25, 2022 4:30 PM Ever since the release of the ninth Mortal Kombat installment back in 2011, NetherRealm Studios has continued to find great success. Despite this, it seems clear that the developer chose to remain in its comfort zone for a long time now. Mortal Kombat and Injustice games have constituted the majority of NetherRealm's total output since getting picked up by Warner Bros., and even its few games that don't belong in those franchises have remained exclusively on mobile platforms. But now, according to NetherRealm Studios Creative Director Ed Boon, the developer's next game will break the usual pattern of Mortal Kombat to Injustice releases. Speaking to Game Informer, Boon has refrained from sharing information about what this new game will be, as he stated that he will "get in a lot of trouble" if he says too much. But he ensured that the team has a reason for choosing its current path, and he believes that audiences will understand more once the developer ... |
PC Invasion - FeedDDD Friday, February 25, 2022 3:30 PM The chip shortage has been dragging on for well over a year now. For us gamers, it's seemed like wave after wave of bad news, perhaps to the point where apathy is more common than frustration at this point. Things have begun to improve recently, though, we're still a far cry from how good we had it in 2019. Understandably, many still hold guarded optimism for the situation, and recent events have aroused fears among investors and consumers alike that things could once again take a turn for the worse. In response to this, various companies reps have already provided assurances that the chip shortage is still on track for recovery throughout 2022. The recent concerns stem from the developing situation in Ukraine regarding the Russian attack on the country. Ukraine is a major supplier of neon, a gas required for semiconductor manufacturing. Companies such as ASML and Micron rely on the supply of this natural resource from Ukraine, but it's important to note that in th... |
