Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Monday, February 13, 2023 12:00 PM Too many spells in games are just variations on the old reliable fireball. Wizard sends projectile towards target. Target dies. Perhaps they deviate a little in how quickly they die, or how large the area of effect is. Maybe instead of a fireball it's a thunderbolt, or a poisonous gas, or a beam of light. Pish, I say. Pish! Where's the real magic? Where are the cataclysmic spells that take days or weeks of preparation, and then change the world with a single fateful ritual? These games could learn something from The Last Spell, a roguelite turn-based tactics game about defending your village each night from hordes of mutant beasts that emerge from the purple fog surrounding the entire world. Whenever I start a new game in The Last Spell, I always rewatch the excellent opening sequence, which succinctly sets a harrowing scene of magic pushed further than we're used to seeing in most fiction in general, let alone games. |

Siliconera Monday, February 13, 2023 4:00 PM The FFVII Remake official Twitter account shared some details on the Moogle cape that Yuffie sports during the early parts of Episode Intermission. This marks her first appearance in the FFVII Remake continuity. Yuffie's cape is moved by real time processing in-game. The process to model it included recreating the item in real life, and scanning it to produce the 3D model used in game. https://twitter.com/FFVIIR_CLOUD/status/1625057192260046848 By having the cape as a real item, the artists in charge of scanning and modeling it could manually adjust the shape and the wrinkles as many times as needed to get the wanted results. The artists managed to give the Moogle hood a particular roughed up and used feel, while maintaining the cuteness of the design. You can check out the details of Yuffie's FFVII Remake Intermission Moogle cape in the gallery below. [gallery columns="4" ids="950962,950961,950960,950959" link="file"] A different snippet of information shared confirmed that the setting for the original Final Fantasy VII was originally going to be New York. This concept was most likely reused in Parasite Eve, which launched shortly after Final Fantasy VII. Final Fantasy VII Remake is available for the PS4, PS5, and PC. The PS5 and PC versions of the game are the FFVII Remake Intergrade versions, which include an extra episode starring Yuffie as its main character. Siliconera Monday, February 13, 2023 3:00 PM When I hear about a game called Little Witch Nobeta, I don't think of a Soulslike. When I see a cute anime-style character like the titular protagonist, I don't think of a 3D action shooter. But Little Witch Nobeta is very much both of those things, and it does a good job of it. As Nobeta, players make their way through an ancient castle where the little witch hopes to learn about where she's from. On the journey, there are countless enemies to fight and secrets to discover, durin which Nobeta makes full use of her staff. Her main form of attack is her magic, and there are several types to learn. On top of having a standard attack that varies slightly between magic types, each magic also has a chanted spell that, in addition to being extremely powerful, attacks in a unique way and even provides Nobeta with an effect useful for puzzle solving. The differences in each magic's use makes switching between them necessary, but in a way that feels natural. Nobeta also has a physical attack by way of swinging her staff. It's definitely a secondary attack used mainly when your MP bar is low and you can't use magic, but it helps recover Nobeta's mana on hit, which can be hugely helpful. While the added utility doesn't come close to making it a viable alternative to using spells, it does make it feel useful. The extra mana regeneration helps tie the attack into the overall combat system instead of leaving it feeling like an afterthought. Another way to restore mana is by dodging. Not only does dodging do exactly what you'd expect in stopping you from taking damage, but it also has the same mana restoration benefit as a physical attack. One thing to be careful of with physical attacks and dodges, though, is that they cost stamina. Should Nobeta run out of stamina, she'll fall down, leaving her completely vulnerable to enemy attacks. Being so open to taking damage is very detrimental, of course, so even if you're dangerously low on mana, keeping an eye on your stamina bar is a must. This sort of interconnected gauge management makes for a very fluid, cohesive battle system that really shines during boss fights, and it's just what you'd want from a soulslike. Little Witch Nobeta isn't without its issues, though. In the first hours os so, combat has been a bit lackluster outside of boss fights, with standard enemies tending to feel like they're on the weaker side. I don't have to spend a ton of time fighting them, so unless there's a horde coming after me, I don't get to make full use of the game's otherwise fun combat system. In cases like that, battles definitely feel on the duller side. Exploration in Little Witch Nobeta is also a bit underwhelming during the early parts of the game. There is some exploration to be had, but up to this point, things have mostly felt fairly linear. It's not quite what I'd want or expect from a game with a large number of collectibles. Of course, there is the possibility that the world opens up a bit more as you progress, and that would definitely be a big plus. All in all, Little Witch Nobeta opens on a strong note. When the combat shines, it shines bright, and the mechanics feel very complementary throughout. If the world were a little more open and non-boss fights made a little better use of the battle system, this game would really be a standout, and honestly, it still can be. The later sections have the potential to make an already pleasant experience that much better. Little Witch Nobeta releases for PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch on March 9, 2023. It is available now for PC via Steam. The post Preview: Little Witch Nobeta Brings the Soulslike Atmosphere appeared first on Siliconera. |

He replaces the original shoe store owner Crusty Sean, who has been busy traveling the world in the official Nintendo mobile app. As spotted by fans, Fred Crumbs takes on the appearance of a deep fried mackerel dish, something Nintendo have said he did to himself while taking a job posting literally. https://twitter.com/SplatoonNA/status/1625132779389198337 These two will be joining the previously revealed Splatoon 3 DLC characters, Annie, Moe, Shelly and Donny, rounding out the four main shops for new clothing items. Siliconera Monday, February 13, 2023 1:30 PM A new Design Coco Gawr Gura figure is headed to Japan, and it celebrated by showing off a 1:1 scale, life-size version of it at WonHobby 36. The statue showed up at their booth. Like the figure, it featured the Hololive EN Vtuber in her normal outfit, wielding a trident and accompanied by Bloop, her mascot. The retailer AmiAmi shared video footage of the life-size Gawr Gura at WonHobby 36.
When it comes to the 1/7th scale version, it is expected to ship in February 2024. Reservations for it are open via the official Design Coco site until April 21, 2023. It costs ¥24,750 (~$186). AmiAmi, which ships worldwide, is also accepting pre-orders for the figure. It is expected to stand at over nine inches tall. The water parts on the base are translucent. Here's a closer look at the upcoming Design Coco Gawr Gura figure from different angles. As for Gawr Gura herself, the Hololive EN Vtuber recently resumed streaming. She returned on February 11, 2023. Prior to that, she was on a health-related hiatus. However, she did participate in the Hololive Mario Kart tournament. Siliconera Monday, February 13, 2023 1:00 PM Did you know that if you had a baby the same year that JoJo's Bizarre Adventure started, your baby would be almost 40 years old? That's how long Hirohiko Araki's long-running, family legacy, action adventure manga graced the pages of Weekly Shonen Jump and Ultra Jump. With the newest part, JOJOLANDS, coming out soon, there is no better time than now to refresh the JoJos we have followed and rooted for over the years. Phantom Blood: Jonathan JoestarThe OG JoJo, Jonathan Joestar, is a good lad. In fact, he is the best lad on this entire list. He is completely unproblematic and a ray of sunlight (yellow). Not only do we follow Jonathan's story in Phantom Blood, but his descendants are the protagonists of their own respective arcs. Jonathan was a nobleman during the Victorian era, and he was living a pretty good life until his father brought home one Dio Brando to be his step-brother. His life turned upside down, and through a series of mishaps and misadventures, Jonathan learns the Ripple, marries his childhood love, and then... Well, you'll just have to watch Phantom Blood to see. Battle Tendency: Joseph JoestarIn a complete 180 from Jonathan, Joseph is one bad JoJo. Not in the sense that he is a bad character. But if Jonathan saw him, Joseph would be on his way to a smacked bottom. Joseph is loud and boisterous, but surprisingly smart underneath his clownish demeanor. His fights were the start of the more typical brain over brawn battles that have become rather characteristic of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. Like Jonathan, Joseph used the Ripple, but he was far more creative with it thanks to his own wits, Lisa Lisa's training, and Caesar's rivalry. Stardust Crusaders: Jotaro KujoJotaro is the cool Jojo, whether you like it or not. Much like how Polnareff's character design served as a major inspiration for Guile in Street Fighter 2, Jotaro was the blueprint for many "cool" characters to appear later. Even Sol Badguy riffs off of Jotaro's famous "Yare yare daze" line. Also, since Stardust Crusaders is the first part to introduces Stands, Jotaro's Star Platinum is just as iconic as its user, even though all it can do is punch things really hard and really fast. Despite his crass mouth and aloof personality, Jotaro sets off on his journey to kill DIO so that he can save his mom from a tragic fate. So he's not all bad. Diamond is Unbreakable: Josuke Higashikata (東方仗助)If Jotaro blazed a trail for decades of cool and aloof main characters, then Josuke was a product of his time. He was trendy and hip, and he had the kewl-est haircut in Morioh. Josuke is also the first character with a very specifically non-offensive power – his Crazy Diamond's power is to heal things and put them back together. This forces him to use it in creative ways in a callback to his father Joseph (it's a long story). Diamond is Unbreakable is mostly a slice-of-life story with Kira's serial killer plot only appearing here and there until the end, so Josuke's more laid-back personality fit with the arc he starred in. Vento Aureo: Giorno GiovannaGiorno is not a Jojo; he is actually Giogio. But it's really the same thing. Because of Giorno's more cruel mindset (he is literally in the mafia) and his blonde hair, he stands out from the dark-haired and kind Jojos prior to him. One could argue that Giorno sets the precedent in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure where the JoJo is actually the lancer to the part's actual protagonist – in this case, that would be Bucciarati. Giorno is also special because he has DIO's genes despite being a Joestar. Some fans are of the opinion that he is one of the strongest characters (if not the strongest) in the entirety of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. Stone Ocean: Jolyne CujohJolyne has the distinction of being the very first female JoJo, and she is the only one so far. She is Jotaro's daughter and she shares quite a few quirks with him, such as a variant of his famous "Yare yare daze" line. While she's certainly nicer than her father, she has a brutally vindictive streak that you see time and time again during her incarceration. Like Josuke, she has to be very creative with her Stand. Jolyne is also special because she is the final JoJo of the original timeline. Steel Ball Run: Johnny JoestarJohnny Joestar is the first protagonist in the new timeline after the events at the end of Stone Ocean. And fittingly enough, he is essentially a negaverse Jonathan. He does have his reasons for why he acts like this. But I am sorry to say that Johnny prior to his accident was no saint. Like Giorno, Johnny may be the JoJo of his part, but he is more the lancer to Steel Ball Run's true protagonist, Gyro. That does not in any way negate Johnny's growth as both a person or a Stand user throughout his race across America and search for Jesus Christ's corpse though. Jojolion: Josuke Higashikata (東方定助)Josuke (or Jo2uke in the fandom in order to differentiate him from Diamond is Unbreakable's Josuke) is a man of many names. Like his predecessors, Jo2uke needs to be exceedingly creative with his Stand power, which makes for very interesting fights in Jojolion. Granted, sometimes it is a little difficult to understand what is happening. Another interesting aspect of Jo2uke is that he does not really know who he is or where he comes from. That's big in a series like JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, which heavily focuses on heritage and family lineage. JOJOLANDS: ???JOJOLANDS will start serialization on February 17, 2023. There are some hints online, which show that the new JoJo will have a star-shaped hair ornament in a braid. This is likely a reference to the star-shaped birthmark that runs through the Joestar family line. However, there is no information on his personality, or what struggles he and his friends will face. Episodes of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure are available on both Netflix and Crunchyroll. Viz Media has licensed the manga for English release. Siliconera Monday, February 13, 2023 12:00 PM In Japan, Square Enix is counting down to the release of Octopath Traveler 2 with character art of cast members from the first and second game. Over the weekend, an additional four pieces appeared. In addition to showing some people alone, like Ochette or Castti, there are more pairings. In those Octopath Traveler 2 images, people who share jobs like Temenos and Ophilia or Hikari and Olberic appear together. All images were drawn by members of the dev team. First, the February 9, 2023 picture showed Octopath Traveler 2's Ochette with some of her animal friends. This is a nod to how she can "capture" monsters in battles, then use them latter as allies or food.
On February 10, 2023, Octopath Traveler 2 art showing Temenos the cleric in a library with Ophilia appeared. (She's on the left, looking for a book on a shelf.)
On February 11, 2023, the apothecary Castti art appeared.
Finally, the February 12, 2023 image showed Octopath Traveler 2's warrior Hikari with Olberic, the original game's warrior.
Octopath Traveler 2 will appear on the Switch, PS4, PS5, and PC via Steam on February 24, 2023. A prologue demo is now available. The post New Octopath Traveler 2 Countdown Art Shows Hikari, Olberic, Temenos, and Ophilia appeared first on Siliconera. |
Siliconera Monday, February 13, 2023 11:30 AM At WonHobby 36, Wonderful Works displayed a life-size statue of Reisalin "Ryza" Stout to promote an upcoming figure based on her appearance in Atelier Ryza 3. It had the two side-by-side at their booth. While the smaller version was in a display case, the 1:1 model was in the open and available for pictures. Retailer AmiAmi shared a video showing the life-size Ryza statue from different angles.
Next, here's Wonderful Works' photo showing the Atelier Ryza 3 figure and statue alongside each other.
As a reminder, pre-orders are already open for this smaller scale Atelier Ryza 3 figure worldwide. It is available through Good Smile Company, who is acting as its distributor, with people able to place an order until February 24, 2023. It costs ¥26,378/183.99 and is a 1/7th scale model. However, it won't appear in Japan until December 2023 and North America until February 2024. Atelier Ryza 3: Alchemist of the End & the Secret Key will come to the PS4, PS5, and PC on March 23, 2023 in Japan and March 24, 2023 elsewhere. Siliconera Monday, February 13, 2023 11:00 AM Design COCO is developing a 1/1 scale figure and statue of 2B from NieR: Automata. After Design COCO finishes, you will be able to pre-order and purchase it from AmiAmi. AmiAmi usually provides international shipping, which means overseas customers will be able to purchase it as well. However, if it will be a 1/1 figure, the shipping cost will likely be exorbitant. There is not a lot of information on the figure yet. The AmiAmi Twitter account stated that it will be a life-sized figure & statue. However, the poster for the 2B figure also advertised a bust So it is unclear whether Design COCO plans on releasing two figures, if it will just be a life-sized bust, or if it will be an actual full statue. For reference, 2B is 168 centimeters (5.5 feet) tall. So it will be quite big if Design COCO wants to sculpt her entire body. That being said, Design COCO released life-sized statues in the past. For the Lunar New Year in 2023, it announced a life-sized figure of Hololive VTuber Usada Pekora. The statue stands at around 153 centimeters tall, and this does not include her sandals or ears. On a smaller scale, Design COCO also plans on releasing a 1/7 scale figure of Lum from the new Urusei Yatsura anime. More information on the Design COCO life-sized 2B figure will appear in the future. Interested parties will be able to purchase it from AmiAmi when it comes out. WGB, Home of AWESOME Reviews Monday, February 13, 2023 12:10 PM Deliver Us Mars is the sequel to Deliver Us The Moon: Fortuna, a narrative-driven game that had a lot of issues when it launched at the end of 2018. KeokeN Interactive removed the game from sale and worked hard to patch it up, including a reworked ending, before releasing it again minus the Fortuna subtitle. Then, last year, they released a PS5 and Xbox Series patch, bringing it back into the public eye. Now, KeokeN Interactive are back with a follow-up and although you can enjoy the story without having played the original, the cast of characters is largely the same, carrying on the story of the Johanson family. This time the focus is on Kathy Johanson, the youngest of the family who has spent years training to become an astronaut. Her story is an interesting one marred by monotonous gameplay. Although KeokeN Interactive's passion and love for its game are undeniable, and it has certainly launched in a better state than its debut in 2018, Deliver Us Mars doesn't always deliver the goods. |
