PCGamesN Friday, June 30, 2023 1:50 PM It's no secret that The Lord of the Rings Gollum was largely received poorly by players, especially by fans of J.R.R. Tolkien's writing on Middle-earth. The stealth game falls short of expectations with its design, gameplay, and story, leading to a mass of negative feedback soon after its release. PCGamesN Friday, June 30, 2023 1:21 PM Countless war games have tried to capture the essence of military conflict on a massive scale. Whether it's from the bloodless perspective of a tactical commander overseeing the battlefield, or as a heartfelt tableau of valiant hearts lost in the trenches, videogames have grappled with the weight of its enormity across all genres. It's notable that horror games set during the Great War are few and far between, drowned out by first-person shooters that have you charging along hedgerows brandishing a bolt-action rifle flush with ammo. Amnesia The Bunker bucks that trend, eschewing the grandiose to capture the sensory and emotional experience of the horror of trench warfare, echoing the prominent WWI poets that came before it. To really do Amnesia The Bunker's poetic horror justice, we need to delve into its various twists, as well as its ending – needless to say, there are spoilers below. PCGamesN Friday, June 30, 2023 1:15 PM Call of Duty cheats ruin the fun. There's nothing that makes me want to put the game down and go touch grass quite so immediately as someone in my Modern Warfare 2 or Warzone 2 lobby who's clearly aimbotting or wallhacking, picking off players with inhuman speed and rocketing up the leaderboard. PCGamesN Friday, June 30, 2023 12:32 PM Want to know about the Diablo 4 stash system? The Diablo 4 stash gives you a private chest to store some of your most prized possessions. Any items that fit in your inventory can fit in your stash, so feel free to put your favorite weapons, armor, and gems away for a rainy day. At first, your stash is limited to just 50 storage slots, but this can be upgraded as you progress through the game. Whether you're just starting with one of the best builds or you're a seasoned Diablo 4 endgame player on the hunt for Uniques, your stash is essential for organizing your items. For some experienced Diablo 4 players, the stash doesn't have enough storage space, but there's a way around this if you don't mind creating mule characters. PCGamesN Friday, June 30, 2023 12:29 PM When it comes to the Skate 4 release date, it could be as soon as the end of this year. Despite there being some Skate 4 gameplay and even closed playtests, EA's upcoming revival is a rare case of a triple-A studio showing off very early in-development footage of a game - and we love it. However, this does mean that although we've seen plenty of Skate 4, we can also clearly see it's not ready yet. It's already been over a decade since the last Skate game, we can hold on a little longer. The first Skate was among the most innovative skateboard games around, from its analog control scheme and semi open-world game structure to its more realistic, less edgy representation of the skating scene. The development team behind Skate 3 was disbanded after its release in 2010, and the series' community has been consistently bombarding EA message boards with questions about the series and its potential return ever since. PCGamesN Friday, June 30, 2023 12:26 PM Are you trying to wrap your head around CSGO ranks? There is little in the way of in-game explanations to help you figure out how to get started with CSGO rankings. That means there are a lot of new players learning the ropes and trying to adjust to one of the best PC games of all time. PCGamesN Friday, June 30, 2023 12:25 PM What is the Starfield frame rate? You may have heard that on Xbox consoles, the frame rate for this vast space game will be locked to 30fps. While this fact won't bother most people, you might be concerned if you own a high-end computer with a high refresh rate display. If an option on PC that gives you a higher, consistent fps exists, it's only understandable that you'd wish to know in advance. As the Starfield release date is still a few months away, you could try to solve any potential issues by upgrading your PC. PCGamesN Friday, June 30, 2023 11:56 AM What are Starfield missions? Blasting off across the solar system is an exciting prospect, but you might be wondering what quests await you in the big black yonder. Well, rather a lot as it happens, and the Settled Systems are chock-full with all manner of missions and side quests to complete. Aside from the main story, you can become embroiled in large-scale political conflict, battle space pirates, or even make a friend. In fact, we've compiled a list of Starfield mission types just to make sense of it all. Starfield missions take eager spacefarers on a grand exploration of over 1,000 planets. According to lead quest designer Will Shen, the space game's galactic scale and procedural generation necessitated a new approach to designing side quests, which often begin in "a dynamically placed settlement that takes you to a dynamically placed dungeon as you're walking through the planet." Here are the Starfield missions you can expect to sink your teeth into once the release date rolls around. PCGamesN Friday, June 30, 2023 11:52 AM Resident Evil has seen a lot of Chris Redfields over the years. We begin with the blocky, bulky RE1 Chris of "Wesker, you're pitiful!" fame. In the Resident Evil Remake and Code Veronica, Chris was a little more slender and believable, before bulking up big time for RE5 and RE6, and turning into a threatening, almost Mr. X-style man mountain for Resident Evil 7 and Village. For my money, though, having lived and breathed Resident Evil since 1996, there is only one true Chris Redfield, and that's his original live-action performer Charlie Kraslavsky. Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Friday, June 30, 2023 12:00 PM Ruinarch is based on a concept many of you have thought of at some point. What if, instead of building up villages and hunting down hostile monsters and evil overlords, you were playing as the Dark Lord? It's been done most famously in Dungeon Keeper or Overlord, but those were quite conventional structurally. Sure, you were playing as the baddies, but still doing mostly the same things as in other games, twirling your moustache the whole time. Ruinarch feels not like one of those thematic remixes of an established structure, but an attempt to build a new subgenre. Now that it's reached a full release, it also, sadly, feels like a demonstration of how difficult that really is. |

The most elaborate Spiderverse-themed skins for Fortnite, with all the custom dances they can muster, are as shadows and dust next to methodically cleaning an orange submarine car while a fictional octopus sends you sad texts. Off the back of the trip, I've finally decided to get my act together and pursue a long, arduous road to some degree of fluency. It's always going to be a work-in-progress, but I think I've settled into a language learning routine which leaves me with plenty of time for Love Island in the evening. DuoLingo's owl has been punted to the curb, too, because the bird is awful. Naturally, I've turned to a textbook: Genki I. At first I thought there was no getting past it being a bit dry - I mean they aren't meant to be thrillers, are they? Until, that was, I discovered Game Gengo, a YouTuber who takes each lesson from the textbook, breaks them down into manageable chunks, all complete with loads of examples from video games. I spend most of my evenings with the guy, and what a treat it is. |

Siliconera Friday, June 30, 2023 1:30 PM Square Enix offered new details about the vision that Marlene and Aerith shared the first time they meet in FFVII Remake. The official Twitter account for the game offered more details, and shared the Japanese transcript of the conversation between the two characters and the next discussion between Aerith and Tseng. The first encounter between Aerith and Marlene happens during chapter 12 of FFVII Remake, titled "Fight for Survival." In it, both characters meet at the Seventh Heaven bar, where Marlene is hiding during a Shinra assault at the sector's plate. During this scene, Aerith introduces herself to the girl and manages to calm her, after which Marlene reacts as if she had seen something. This event goes unexplained for the rest of the game. However, the FFVII Remake development team recently gave more details about the exchange. Apparently, depending on each person's sensitivity, when someone comes into contact with Aerith they may see a vision or illusion that transcends time and space. During their first encounter in FFVII Remake, Marlene saw some sort of vision that she should not have seen when interacting with Aerith. However, the development team decided to leave what she saw up to each person's interpretation. You can check out the original tweet here: https://twitter.com/FFVIIR_CLOUD/status/1674704328999993344 Final Fantasy VII Remake is immediately available for the PS4, PS5, and Windows PC. The second part of the Remake series is Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and will appear in early 2024. Fox first explained that there were sprites from it in the game, which people may have discovered, but never ended up used. These would have been part of a segment for speedrunners, but that didn't happen. However, there's now a video mock-up showing what that event would have looked like, complete with special music. Here is the segment showing Sans eating ice cream in Undertale. While it would have appeared at the end of the game, there are no spoilers present. It does offer a nod to the fact that whoever playing the game ended up getting through the story much faster than expected. This isn't the only detail about a game that came up in the Summer 2023 email newsletter. Fox also offered an update on Deltarune's progress. Apparently, they are now working an overworld area for the third chapter of the game. There's still no release window for the next part of that game yet, however. Undertale is available on the PS4, Vita, Switch, Xbox One, and PC. Sans and Papyrus Nendoroids are also now available. Siliconera Friday, June 30, 2023 9:01 AM With how massive The Legend of Heroes franchise is, Trails into Reverie has a daunting task of essentially being the climax of everything in the Crossbell and Erebonia arcs. Across three sub-series and nine mainline games, it is a quite a lot that this game has to accomplish, and it does so in a mostly nice manner on the Nintendo Switch version I played. Unlike past games that focused on a singular protagonist, Trails into Reverie features three heroes at the crux of its story: Rean Schwarzer, Lloyd Bannings, and C. The former two have the opportunity to round out their storylines, while the mysterious C is a brand new protagonist. This system of switching between the three heroes and their perspectives is the core of this game's features and plot. [caption id="attachment_970905" align="aligncenter" width="1200"] Screenshot by Siliconera[/caption] Often, you have the opportunity to pick which character you wish to follow, but this only lasts for a period of time. You'll inevitably run into a cliffhanger in their story or a puzzle you can't complete. This will then require you to check out another hero's story to progress. This fascinating approach makes the scope of this game enormous, which is a positive and negative in the end. Each individual story doesn't get nearly the amount of attention and love it deserves, even with the most playable characters in the franchise to date. Each route has its own party members, areas, dungeons, and more. At its core, though, Trails into Reverie will be familiar to anyone who's played the Cold Steel or the two Crossbell titles. On that note, this is also not the place to start this series fresh, as you should honestly complete every other game before this to get the full appreciation for what it does; you'll be lost otherwise. Gameplay features exploring dungeons and interacting with monsters you find to switch to a tactical turn-based system. You're able to maneuver characters within a limited space to avoid attacks and hit enemies. You have a mix of arts, crafts (physical skills), and S-Crafts (think Final Fantasy's limit breaks). [caption id="attachment_970909" align="aligncenter" width="1200"] Screenshot by Siliconera[/caption] Trails into Reverie brings back some of the more recent gameplay components, such as Brave Orders and combat links. The one main addition is the new United Front. This allows you to frequently use a full team attack with everyone in the party to heal or attack. This new addition isn't too wild, but it does just enough to give more strategic options. I honestly used it quite a bit, since it is so readily available and it is possible to one-shot random mobs this way. In the end, though, the progression is starting to feel a bit stale in Trails into Reverie. The dungeons don't feel all that interesting, especially when you visit familiar locations from past games. The same goes for the towns you visit, which are heavily limited in this title. It's honestly is a bit odd that there are almost no side quests and events to encounter in the story. You pretty much have the main plot and whatever chests you find along the way, and that's about it. Sure, you can speak with NPCs in Crossbell, Heimdallr, and the like, but there is almost no reason to in this surprisingly linear experience. Where Trails into Reverie lacks in its optional content and exploration, it makes up for in one area: Reverie Corridor. This is a brand new, semi-optional location you visit between chapters. This spot acts as the bulk of your free time in this game when not doing the story, and there's a surprising amount of content to do here. Outside of exploring the dungeon itself, you have numerous minigames, optional events, and even some gacha mechanics to enjoy. [caption id="attachment_970906" align="aligncenter" width="1200"] Screenshot by Siliconera[/caption] This is the one fresh part of Trails into Reverie that excited me, but I feel like it limits you too much at first. It encourages you to keep coming back and unlocking more bizarre minigames (like the magical girl one above), missions, floors, and events, but it drip feeds it almost too slowly. Even still, this was the highlight of my time with this game when other aspects felt stale. It doesn't quite make up for traditional side quests and optional content, though. The repetitive nature of Trails into Reverie is even the case for the main story, which doesn't quite reach the heights of most other games in the series. This is partly due to its divided perspective nature, and also because everything feels far too familiar. For instance, Lloyd's plot is all about taking back Crossbell for the, what, fourth or fifth time? The same goes for Rean, whose story is pretty paper thin and feels like just an excuse to not leave him and the members of Class VII out. And don't get me started on the lack of an Estelle and Joshua storyline, which is tragic. That said, the new protagonist C, and his band of new characters is easily the best part of the main plot. This intriguing and alluring character has some impressive development that some fans may not see coming. [caption id="attachment_970904" align="aligncenter" width="1200"] Screenshot by Siliconera[/caption] It helps, too, that his party members of Nadia, Swin, and Lapis are equally memorable new characters. The C route almost made me wish the entire game was all about them, instead of trying to give equal attention to Rean and Lloyd. On a side note, I only had the opportunity to play the Nintendo Switch version. Despite having similar graphics to the Cold Steel games, Trails into Reverie runs rather poorly on Switch. In busier areas like Crossbell, the frame rate slows down considerably. It doesn't happen everywhere, but it gets annoying to play when you're in a more populated area. [caption id="attachment_970907" align="aligncenter" width="1200"] Screenshot by Siliconera[/caption] The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie, ultimately, doesn't feel like the most required game in the series. Despite pushing the world and its characters forward into a new direction, its scope is a bit too large at times. The gameplay remains as sharp as ever and the Reverie Corridor is a fun new addition, but it would have benefited more from a tighter story about C and his group. The Legend of Heroes: Trails Into Reverie will release for the Switch, PS4, PS5, and PC on July 7, 2023 in North America and Europe and on July 14, 2023 in Australia. Siliconera Friday, June 30, 2023 8:00 AM Version 1.1 of Honkai: Star Rail introduced the Companion Mission "Frosty Blade's Trial," which shows what Yanqing is up to behind the scenes. He's searching through the Xianzhou Luofu for the fugitive Blade. Through a jade tracer that you find on the ground, you can play as Yanqing in an instanced version of Luofu and learn some more about the going-ons of the ship. Those who don't have Yanqing can see what kind of person he is in his Companion Mission. He was pretty absent in the main story of Version 1.0, so some might not be familiar with his personality. As Jing Yuan's protégé and a talented swordsman, he is very confident in his skills and hates people underestimating him for his age. He wants to be the Sword Champion, which is the title given to the best swordsman. [caption id="attachment_970947" align="alignnone" width="1200"] Screenshot by Siliconera[/caption] Here are some tips for Frosty Blade's Trial in Honkai: Star RailUnlike other Companion Missions in Honkai: Star Rail, Yanqing has a very straightforward quest. You simply have to follow along the quest marker and destroy any enemy in your path. Yanqing's Companion Mission is also the first time that you'll see Jingliu, Jing Yuan's old mentor, in game. She will not be a playable unit during this mission though. Try to bring AoE Fire or Lightning units into Yanqing's instance. Examples in Version 1.1 include Himeko and Serval. You'll fight quite a few Mara-struck enemies, who come in little groups, and Yanqing is a single-target DPS. Another thing is that there will be a Disciple of Sanctus Medicus on the ground as you make your way to Cloudford Dock. Unless you're in a particularly bloodthirsty mood, you can just ignore it. You don't get any rewards from winning except a possible rush of dopamine. [caption id="attachment_970948" align="alignnone" width="1200"] Screenshot by Siliconera[/caption] What's up with Jingliu in Yanqing's mission?Jingliu is a key figure for Jing Yuan, who is in turn a key figure for Yanqing. But Jingliu's presence is not a big deal for Yanqing due to that connection. It's because she's likely the first person he's ever met who has so strongly shaken his confidence in himself. We see in his interactions with the Cloud Knights that they treat him with a measure of respect. We also know that Jing Yuan is a nice and patient teacher. Jingliu, in comparison, is nuts. She would throw that boy off a cliff if she thought that would make him strong. We also get some foreshadowing as to what we'll see in the next story quest. The next main quest will likely be part of Version 1.2. This Companion Mission sets up Yanqing's quest for Blade on the Luofu, as well as reveals both Jingliu's presence and her own goal of finding Blade. Jingliu states again and again that Yanqing has no chance of winning against Blade. Despite Jingliu outclassing him, it's doubtful that Yanqing has fully learned his lesson. A confrontation between the two swordsmen seems inevitable. Honkai: Star Rail is readily available on Windows PC and mobile devices. PS4 and PS5 versions are in development. After you completely finish Yanqing's Companion Mission, you will get the "Blade Abracadabra" track to play on the Astral Express. As a unit, Yanqing is perpetually available as a permanent 5-star.
