Kotaku Thursday, September 14, 2023 5:50 PM Whenever Sony events roll around, there's always a twinge of anticipation among players that we may see new footage of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Square Enix's sequel to Final Fantasy VII Remake, which itself was the first chapter of its trilogy of games that are not-so-faithfully remaking the 1997 classic. Kotaku Thursday, September 14, 2023 2:54 PM If it feels like Nintendo has put a ton of Mario on the menu lately, there's a clear explanation for the boom of Italian-American fare—and it's not that the Feast of San Gennaro is coming up. Kotaku Thursday, September 14, 2023 2:50 PM I've put over 120 hours into last November's Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, and I think at some point between then and now, I must have mentally suppressed just how poorly these open-world Switch games run. Kotaku Thursday, September 14, 2023 2:30 PM Cyberpunk 2077's 2.0 update is coming on September 21, and it completely overhauls the game's skill trees to give you a more defined playstyle. It rules. Kotaku Thursday, September 14, 2023 1:25 PM Today's busy Nintendo Direct included one smaller announcement that took us by surprise: a remastering of niche classic, Another Code: Two Memories. PCGamesN Thursday, September 14, 2023 5:48 PM How do you unlock and perform Mortal Kombat 1 fatalities? In a rather annoying move, each character only has access to one of their fatalities by default. To get the rest of the MK1 fatalities, you'll need to go through one of the many game modes to unlock them, and then you need to equip them in the customize mode. So yes, if you want to perform the most disgusting finishing moves in Mortal Kombat 1, you'll first need to explore the fighting game's Invasions Mode and achieve certain missions. When you get them, you can view them via the Mortal Kombat 1 gear system, or you can just read on to find out all the fatality codes as you don't actually need to unlock them to use them! If you're looking for all the Mortal Kombat 1 Brutalities, they're on a separate list, as there are so many of them to find. Phantom Liberty takes players to Dogtown, a ruined city defined by its crumbling architecture and corrupt citizens. Cyberpunk 2077's upcoming content introduces us to characters like Solomon Reed, represented by actor Idris Elba. He was revealed to be much more than just the expansion's central figure, though. PCGamesN Thursday, September 14, 2023 11:00 AM Ridge Racer is the one that sticks in my mind. Fast, fluid, and leaping off the screen with primary colors and raw energy, back in 1995 (I played the late-arriving PlayStation port) it felt unlike anything I'd seen before. Burnout came later. In the wake of Gran Turismo, which brought an incredible and more serious depth to the racing game, Burnout felt like the revival of Outrun - you just put the pedal down, take in the music and the atmosphere, and try not to crash. I miss the simplicity, the vibrancy, and the high-speed joy of '90s racing sims. Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, September 14, 2023 4:08 PM American Truck Simulator has, by my count, now added eleven extra states as DLC over and above the two it launched with. Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, September 14, 2023 1:20 PM I wouldn't say I've been itching to return to Amnesia: The Bunker, Frictional's perfectly ghastly blend of horror game and immersive sim, but I've certainly been itching to write about it. The terrible beauty of that generator-based exploration and scavenging loop. That moment when you walk just a little too quickly down a corridor, and hear the awful rummaging in the walls. The agonising discovery that not only is it possible to roam with the lights out, but pretty much required, beyond a certain point. The dense burden of grasping more or less where to go, without knowing how to survive the journey - and above all else, those goddamn rats, always encountered where least convenient. Shoo! Shoo! It's by far the most oppressive and demanding horror game I've played in recent memory, and it'll get considerably worse with the release of the Halloween update. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, September 14, 2023 1:00 PM On paper, Final Fantasy XIV doesn't do a very good job of encouraging fishing. FFXIV's lead director and producer Naoki Yoshida — known as Yoshi P — wanted to create something that was "fun, but relaxing", and there aren't a lot of material rewards for the time you put in. You can sell the fish or break them down into other materials, but really the only reason to fish is for the sake of fishing itself. And yet today Final Fantasy XIV is home to a close knit fishing community of over 27,000 people. This single shared interest has spun off into many different directions, including fishing as a competitive journey, the process of building a space for the hobby itself, and even a kind of metagame. But the main thread tying these all together is the love for fishing, and the community's central hub is actually located outside of the game - in a Discord server called Fisherman's Horizon, lovingly nicknamed Fishcord. |

"This morning we learned that law enforcement notified several Unity offices of credible threats. This fucking sucks." |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, September 14, 2023 11:35 AM There comes a point in every diary playthrough when the Comet of Invention meets the Cowpat of Diminishing Returns, when the Foot of Agency meets the Covert Hedgehog of Limited Design, when Fucking Around meets Finding Not Much Out. I fear we are reaching that point with the life and times of Mary Read, my Starfield character and nowadays quite accomplished space pirate, who has sworn never to land on a planet ever again. Immediately after conquering the Chimera in Part 2 of the Starfield No-Planet Run, I commandeered a UC Longsword II on the other side of the same system. The Longsword has proven a predator without equal, charging straight through opposing craft even when they've got several levels on me, its unforgiving autocannons forming the dominant bassline of every encounter. Frankly, it's getting repetitive, and while the obvious remedy is to plunge cackling and crying into a star system with an AI threat level in the high double digits, I doubt that will really alter the rhythms of Starfield's ship combat - it'll just mean I have to do some grinding. |

Siliconera Thursday, September 14, 2023 5:31 PM Bandai Namco announced a follow-up to Tales of Arise at the September 2023 State of Play. Despite saying there would be no DLC, Tales of Arise: Before the Dawn is on the way. This is a new adventure that will be set after the end of the main game and requires the base title to play. It will debut on November 9, 2023. The video begins with Alphen and Shionne traveling together. We then see a mysterious young girl being chased. When all of the playable characters from the original game are reunited, Dohalim introduces Nazamil. She's a mysterious young daughter of a Lord who is in danger. Back in August 2021, the original game's producer Yusuke Tomizawa said there would be no DLC or sequel to the adventure. However, Bandai Namco filed a trademark for Tales of Arise: Before the Dawn back in December 2022. While there weren't many details, it seemed to contradict that. Tales of Arise is available for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC, and Before the Dawn will arrive on November 9, 2023. People must have the original game if they want to go through the new adventure when it launches. The post Tales of Arise DLC Before the Dawn Arrives in November appeared first on Siliconera. |

The game was revealed during the Japanese broadcast of the September 2023 Nintendo Direct. In this new surreal title, the protagonist of the game is a kid that gets absorbed by a console and ends up in a land inhabited only by children. In the land of the game, adults will sometimes try and eat children. The game will feature a turn-based combat system with a great emphasis on talking to enemies and finding ways to avoid a disastrous fate. During combat, the protagonist will have to move around the field to avoid damage during combat, in a similar fashion to Undertale. You can take a look at the reveal trailer for Stray Children on minute 1:10:26 of the latest Japanese Nintendo Direct presentation. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6GtVjxdKM04&t=4226s Onion Games is a studio founded by veteran developers and members of the defunct Love-de-Lic studio. The developers are well known for having worked on cult-classics titles like Chulip, Little King's Story, Rule of Rose, and Moon: Remix RPG Adventure. Siliconera Thursday, September 14, 2023 3:30 PM At The Game Awards 2022, Supergiant unveiled Hades 2, and now it revealed the early access release window for it ahead of TGS 2023. It will enter that phase in Q2 2024. The developer also noted that people will be able to find Hades 2 on both Epic Games Store and Steam when it launches, and there will be a Technical Test before that happens. The Hades 2 Technical Test will show up in Q2 2024. This will be a more limited affair. Only a small number of potential players will be picked to play during this portion. The build will be smaller and focus on "technical" and "compatibility" issues. The goal with the early access phase for Hades 2 will be to release it with quite a bit of content available. However, the announcement noted they want to ensure it is released at a point where the team can still make changes based on what early access players experience. It did note that there will be multiple Major Updates leading up to the 1.0 release of the game. Hades 2 Technical Test and early access release will happen for the PC in Q2 2024 when it appears on Epic Games Store and Steam. A console release hasn't been confirmed yet. Siliconera Thursday, September 14, 2023 3:00 PM Gunbrella is an unusual sort of game. It's a platformer with run-and-gun elements. However, the execution and implementation of the story and quests into all of its parts makes it feel like more than that. It can often feel like more of an adventure, given times when you'll need to collect items like rats or keys or get information from a specific person to progress. The blending of these things are all well handled and, some bugs that could be addressed by the time you see this aside, it's a generally fascinating little game. Gunbrella begins with a man on a mission. After finding a loved one dead and the titular weapon left on the scene as the only clue, the survivor set out for information and, presumably, revenge. So, this person heads to the city of Allendale to get a better idea of what's going on and get closure. [caption id="attachment_984119" align="alignnone" width="1200"] Image via Doinksoft and Devolver[/caption] In many ways, Gunbrella looks like any platformer with gun elements. You'll find yourself in some stages, often in swamps, sewers, or buildings, that may have multiple paths, doors to unlock, and perilous dangers to dodge as you journey to reach specific spots. Enemies will be littered throughout, responding to your very existence with a desire to attack and shoot at you either with bullets or magic. However, there are also more towns to explore than I expected here. There, you'll interact with individuals to take on side quests, learn more about the world, and find ways to advance in the event the path to the next series of "stages" is blocked. I really didn't expect the depth I saw there. For example, one early side quest involves finding a gem from a cult's manor. However, there are two possible homes for it. You can meet the two folks who both want to own it on your way to "visit" the cult members, and likely pass at least one of them as you head back. These sort of things come up pretty often, and I liked how exploring off a beaten path or spending extra time in areas usually rewarded me with things like scrap for upgrading the gunbrella or ambiance that helped better define the world. Instead of feeling like I'm exploring some labyrinthine area like in Castlevania or Metroid or some straightforward series of levels like Mega Man, it's instead this progression of spaces with towns, forests, sewers, and specific places in between. I appreciated the connection. [caption id="attachment_984120" align="alignnone" width="1200"] Image via Doinksoft and Devolver[/caption] I also appreciated how Gunbrella sometimes feels like it rewards being stealthy, agile, and clandestine more than straightforward, mindless shooting and rushing. It can feel like there are various paths through places. For example, one forested area I explored sometimes felt like I could grind on the rails above or go for a high road or stay closer to the ground and possible watery spaces. Maybe I sneak up on that armed official and shoot from someplace that isn't directly in front of them, drawing their ire. Opponents seem reasonable, though I felt there is a noticeable increase in intelligence from human opponents that may more relentlessly pursue you than, say, certain animals. (Except bees. Bees are bad.) However, one thing I noticed is that the difficulty level of the bosses often felt tied more to how comfortable I was wielding the gunbrella than they were about the bosses being unfair or exceptionally strong. How they move about the stage and knowing how I'd need to respond by dashing, unfurling the umbrella portion to act as a shield, and time movements was the more critical part. It's interesting, and I felt it helped show the importance of the game's core mechanic in a way some of the more common encounters with typical enemies did. [caption id="attachment_984121" align="alignnone" width="1200"] Image via Doinksoft and Devolver[/caption] The one thing I will say is I noticed a number of small bugs throughout Gunbrella. Most of them did seem fixed via patches ahead of launch, so it might be fine once it's in your hands. It's a solid adventure aside from that. I'd even say the narrative-heavy elements mean it might be a bit more of interest to people who wouldn't normally go for a platformer like this. Yes, you'll eventually need to be incredibly comfortable with the weapon as you get near the end and face certain encounters. But it's welcoming in a way I didn't expect. Basically, it feels like Doinksoft really went as far as possible to ensure it makes Gunbrella feel like it is taking part in a cohesive, connected world filled with ambiance, rather than some loose arrangement of levels. It made me feel like paying attention to different characters and exploring every possible house and area mattered. Especially since it often rewarded me for doing so. It's a novel game that seems well-supported. Gunbrella is available for the Nintendo Switch and PC. The post Review: Gunbrella Goes All Out with Ambiance appeared first on Siliconera. |

Siliconera Thursday, September 14, 2023 1:30 PM Volume 37 of the Hunter x Hunter manga will finally appear in English outside Japan in October 2023. People can get it digitally and physically on October 3, 2023. It will cost $11.99. This means it is more expensive than volume 36, which cost $9.99. Viz Media also revealed the cover for the upcoming volume of the Hunter x Hunter manga. It is a more stoic and solemn one with a more monochromatic sort of look to it. It's been quite a while since we saw a new volume of the manga appear. Viz Media released volume 36 back in August 2019. That launched in October 2018 in Japan. This happens because mangaka Yoshihiro Togashi is experiencing some health problems. As such, this means that the series often goes on hiatus and the release of chapters can end up being delayed. For example, one of the last few updates came in March 2023. That covered the progress of chapter 401 and an update on Togashi's health. Volume 37 of the Hunter x Hunter manga will appear outside Japan on October 3, 2023. The anime is available to stream on Crunchyroll.
