Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Monday, December 11, 2023 12:11 PM Banishers: Ghosts Of New Eden is a game of twos. It has two protagonists and two broad ways of playing, leading to two broad narrative outcomes, and is created by a company who, as Don't Nod's lead narrative designer Elise Galmard explained to me at a preview event, feel like they make games for two different audiences - fans of noodly narrative intrigues on the one hand, and of fantasy combat games on the other. Among the game's challenges, of course, is to blend these halves convincingly. A spiritual (hah) follow-up of sorts to 2018's fairly well-received Vampyr, it takes place in the alt-historical realm of New Eden, which is kind of 17th century colonial North America through the lens of Dragon Age: Inquisition with a pinch of Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice. The titular Banishers are a ghost-hunting couple, the Scotsman Red MacRaith and the Cuban Antea Duarte. Antea is killed at the very beginning of the game, during a battle with an especially noxious spook, but she soon returns as a spirit, and your overall story objective is to either resurrect her body or help her "Ascend" to the afterlife. |

Perhaps it's unsurprising then that a major German PC retailer recorded the 7800X3D as massively outselling any other processor on the market as of late. As of today, the best prices available in the UK and US are at Overclockers (£330) and Amazon ($358). Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Monday, December 11, 2023 10:00 AM In just over a month's time, the entire mainline Ace Attorney series will finally be playable on PC with the arrival of the Apollo Justice Trilogy. Launching on January 25th 2024, this collection bundles together the fourth, fifth and sixth games in Capcom's excellent lawyer 'em up - Apollo Justice, Dual Destinies and Spirit Of Justice - which originally launched on the Nintendo DS and 3DS across a ten year period between 2007 and 2016. It's been funny revisiting the earlier cases of these games after so much time has passed. Apollo's name may be the one on the box, but the series' original cover star Phoenix Wright is never far from the front lines - not only does he get tangled up on the wrong side of the law in Apollo's own debut outing, but he's back as a full-time defence attorney on the (w)right side of the legal bench in the other two. At the time, poor old Apollo always felt like he got the short end of the stick as Capcom tried to figure out what to do with the series, and to some extent, he still does - for he never quite gets out from under Phoenix's shadow to completely hold court on his own two feet. But now, after 2021's excellent Great Ace Attorney Chronicles proved that neither time, setting or its lead defence need to be set in stone for the series to carry on, the pressure does feel ever so slightly less intense on a second visit. There's no denying Apollo still has a bit of an uphill climb on his hands, but if, like me, you've been waiting for these games to be freed from their Nintendo-bound prison, this is arguably the best glow-up Capcom's done to the series to date. |

Koei Tecmo's Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 Remake is still slated for release in 2024, but is delayed. The company initially planned to release the remake in the early months of 2024, however it later announced a delay that changed the release window to cover the whole year.
Koei Tecmo first revealed Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 Remake at the Japanese September 2023 Nintendo Direct. As the title implies, this title will be a remake of the strategy game that originally came out in 2001. The remake will also add new features like Tales based on historical events and Links forged by improving relationship levels with other characters.
The game's producer Kazuhiro Echigoya and development producer Hisatsugu Ishikawa shared a message detailing the reason for delaying the remake's release. The message is also available in English via Koei Tecmo America's official X account:
Most games in Koei Tecmo's Romance of the Three Kingdoms series—including the latest 2020 entry Romance of the Three Kingdoms XIV—only let players act as faction rulers. The eighth entry, which this remake will be based on, is one of the few four that feature additional viewpoints as vassals and free officers. The other games with the same features are the seventh entry in 2000, the tenth in 2004, and the thirteenth in 2016.
The official trailer for the upcoming remake is available to watch right below:
Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 Remake will be available for PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch in 2024.

Square Enix is continuing to share Final Fantasy VII Rebirth screenshots of people and places, with the FFVII Gold Saucer park being the latest. Both images offer an overview of the area.
First, here are some views of the Gold Saucer itself. In one image, we can see the Battle Square and Chocobo Square areas. The Battle Square is the arena where people can face a gauntlet of battles. It's also the home of the museum and private collection of Dio, owner of the park. The other screenshot offers a look of some of the other areas, like the Ghost Square haunted house, Wonderment Square, and Speed Square.
There's also a Final Fantasy VII Rebirth screenshot showing the Gold Saucer from below. That offers a look at Dustbowl, the Corel Prison area. As part of the events of the story when visiting the amusement part above, Cloud and the party end up down below. Solemn Gus is in charge down below.
Prior to the latest The Game Awards 2023 trailer, Square Enix tended to stick to information about areas around Junon and just outside of Midgar. For example, we saw the city under Junon and got a better look at Priscilla, one of the people the party will meet there. There was also a teaser for the Shinra parade segment. However, a few Cosmo Canyon pictures also came up.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will come to the PS5 on February 29, 2024, with the exclusivity arrangement ending on May 29, 2024. FFVII Remake is available for the PS4, PS5, and PC.

Graniph revealed a collaboration apparel lineup of clothing based on the Rebuild of Evangelion movie series. The items will be officially available on December 19, 2023, but the brand has opened pre-orders on its web store since December 6, 2023. [Thanks, Famitsu!]
The collection primarily consists of t-shirts, socks, and sweaters, although it will also include long pants, bags, a thermo mug, and a hat featuring Gendou Ikari. The prices range from 1,200 yen (~$8.20) for the socks to 13,000 yen (~$89) for a reversible blouson jacket.
The brand's physical stores in Japan will set up Evangelion-themed decorations once the items are up for sale. When the Graniph Tokyo flagship store makes its grand opening in Harajuku on December 21, 2023, it will feature large illustrations of the Evangelion Unit-01 and the 4th Angel on its windows. The Tokyo store will also sell exclusive skateboards adorned with images from the movies at 17,000 yen (~$116).
This Evangelion clothing lineup is only available to order legally inside Japan. Although Graniph's web store supports the WorldShopping widget, none of the Evangelion-themed items listed there are compatible with it.
The anime-themed apparel still proved to be popular regardless of the geographical restrictions. As of December 11, 2023, stocks for all sizes of the Asuka-themed one-piece sweater and the knitted cardigan featuring the 4th Angel have already sold out. Pre-orders for the remaining items are still available until December 18, 2023.
Evangelion will not be the first major collaboration Graniph has worked on. The brand has previously revealed items based on Ultraman, Kingdom Hearts, and Yoshitaka Amano of Final Fantasy fame.
The Evangelion apparel collection by Graniph will officially go on sale on December 19, 2023.

Neowiz released the new Lies of P holiday update, which includes Christmas cosmetic items for P. People should see them all in your inventory immediately after updating to 1.4.0.0.
The announcement for the new items appeared on Steam. However, the company did note that the Mac version of the update isn't ready yet. The primary addition this time is the set of three new items for P to wear. However, the Japanese localization also apparently ended up adjusted as well.
As for the three Lies of P holiday update Christmas items, there are essentially two hats and one facial accessory. The Earnest Reindeer's Antlers are a pair of brown antlers for the top of his head. P can wear a Midwinter Night's Red Nose, which is a red ball on his nose to make him resemble Rudolph. Finally, the Winter Festival Peaked Hat is a Santa hat.
This appeared alongside a Lies of P Holiday Edition bundle. Until December 21, 2023, people can get a $63.99 bundle on Steam that includes the main game, Deluxe upgrade, and soundtrack.
Even more Lies of P content is on the way. A Director's Letter video released back in November 2023 noted that DLC will be released for the game. There is also a sequel in development.
Lies of P is available now on the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC.

Square Enix took to social media for spoilers about FFVII Remake Avalanche character, specifically mentioning Biggs. At the end of the retelling, the fates of certain characters differed a bit compared to the original story.
Editor's Note: There will be FFVII Remake spoilers about the Avalanche characters Biggs, Wedge, and Jessie below.
FFVII Remake breaks from tradition when it comes to the fates of certain characters in the game. In the original Final Fantasy VII, Biggs, Wedge, and Jessie all died during the events of the fall of the Sector 7 pillar and plate. However, the events of the remake suggested different possibilities. Wedge immediately survived that instance. Jessie's fate seemed ambiguous. While Wedge seemed blown off of Shinra tower during Cloud and the party's rescue of Aerith, the game ended with Biggs in a bed recovering while Jessie's equipment was nearby.
With the new social media update, Square Enix confirmed that Biggs is the one surviving Avalanche character in FFVII Remake. It shared a piece of art showing his updated appearance. It also noted he fully recovered.
This also follows a scene we'd seen during the FFVII Rebirth The Game Awards 2023 trailer. One portion showed the alternate timeline, with Biggs talking to Zack about the events of the last entry. It's at that point that a wanted poster shows Barret, Tifa, Wedge, and Jessie as all dead. This means that it is uncertain which timeline this profile and character detail is referring to. It could mean that in the one we've been following, where Zack is dead, that there is a chance at other people still being alive. However, it could mean that regardless of the timeline, Biggs is the only survivor.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will come to the PS5 on February 29, 2024, with the exclusivity arrangement ending on May 29, 2024. FFVII Remake is available for the PS4, PS5, and PC.

With the release of the Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy on the horizon, fans will be able to revisit beloved cases and newcomers will have the chance to experience these adventures for the first time. To learn more about the bonus features that will be included with the trilogy and get a better look at the prospects of the future of the Ace Attorney series, Siliconera spoke with Producer Kenichi Hashimoto.
Lauren Palmer: When did the development of Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy begin? How did the releases of the past collections affect it?
Kenichi Hashimoto: Development began in 2021. Since Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy brings the last of the series' mainline games to modern consoles, we took steps to ensure the collection's offerings -- including playability, visual fidelity, and content volume -- were on par with previous Ace Attorney collections.
Can you talk about one or two specific steps the development team took during development to appeal to both newcomers and longtime fans?
Hashimoto: The development team aimed to create a valuable gameplay experience for anyone who picks up Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy. For newcomers, we added certain features to enhance playability, including the freedom to select specific chapters within an episode and a "backlog" system for Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney. Meanwhile, for veteran players and longtime fans, we strived to maintain a similar gameplay feel to their first time playing through the original games.
These games will be playable in other languages. Which languages received all-new voice dubs and how did the recording sessions for them go?
Hashimoto: New voice dubs were recorded in French, German, Korean, and Chinese. Prior to recording, we held discussions with native speakers of each language to determine what type of voice suited each character. Based on these discussions, we then selected voice actors and proceeded with recording.
There are new chibi character illustrations drawn for the Orchestra Hall. How were the instruments played by Athena, Phoenix, Apollo, and Trucy and their designs chosen?
Hashimoto: We selected instruments for each character based on their personality, hobbies, and respective stories in the series.
Can you talk about how you determined which bonuses to include in the collection and how you feel they affect the collection?
Hashimoto: When deciding upon additional features for Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy, we wanted to make sure both longtime series fans and first-time players would be able to enjoy them. With these inclusions, we hope players feel that this collection is the fulfilling way to experience this trilogy of games.
Which artists were commissioned for Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy and how did the process for the pieces of character artwork?
Hashimoto: The game's main visual was created by Takuro Fuse, the Art Director for Dual Destinies and Spirit of Justice. I asked him to create a piece that focused on the trilogy's protagonists with rival prosecutors and other beloved characters from all three games as part of the larger design. Fuse-san's final piece ended up far exceeding my original vision in terms of scale, and I think it looks fantastic.
What will the sharing process look like for the new Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy Animation Studio feature?
Hashimoto: There will not be any functionality implemented into the game system for players to share their creations with others.
With so many Ace Attorney collections out now and games released, how would you feel about an Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth collection that includes localization of the second game?
Hashimoto: The development team is aware that fans are hoping for this. Unfortunately, we have no announcements at this time.
What would you like to see happen with the future of the Ace Attorney series and its characters?
Hashimoto: Each of the characters in the Ace Attorney series are charming, unique, and loved by many fans around the world. I, too, would love to see a future for the series where these beloved characters continue to flourish.
Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy will be released on January 25, 2024 for the Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PCs via Steam.

Ahead of this particular Honkai: Star Rail showcase, there weren't too many details about what we can expect. She'll be joined by the five-star Dr. Ratio and four-star Xueyi, according to early reports. (Xueyi's sister Hanya appeared as a playable unit in 1.5.)

Almost ten years after the initial release of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy, it's time for Apollo Justice to make his mark on a new generation of law enthusiasts. Capcom seems to have done yet another fantastic job with Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy, with the parts of each port I played looking beautiful and playing smoothly.
In a world that is full of injustice, only one man can stand above all the perversions of our legal system and shine a light on the truth. That's right—Phoenix Wright! Wait, no, sorry. I meant Apollo Justice. When Capcom first unveiled this trilogy and marketed it as the Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy, reactions online among people who played these games were a little mixed. A common joke was that despite the game being the "Apollo Justice" trilogy, he's not exactly the main character in all of them. Meanwhile, all three of the original Ace Attorney games focused entirely on Phoenix.
Creators of a long-running series tend to have a hard time saying goodbye to the original protagonist who popularized their show or game. Kiryu Kazuma, Kira Yamato, Phoenix Wright... Even though the creators push Kasuga Ichiban, Shinn Asuka, and Apollo Justice as the supposed "successors" of the original protagonists' legacy, we can't seem to fully shake off the ghosts of the past. Kiryu is still in the Like a Dragon games as a prominent playable character. Kira Yamato hijacked the entire second half of Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny. Phoenix Wright and, egregiously, new character Athena Cykes do not give Apollo much room to shine on his own.
This is really sad to see as an Apollo fan! I was sad about it at the time when I played Dual Destinies and Spirit of Justice too. Though the games after the fourth one do go into more detail about Apollo and his past, they feel so bogged down by the ridiculous setting (the world of Ace Attorney really jumped the shark from the fifth game). The games' lack of focus on threads set up from the fourth game, which was Apollo's debut, was something I didn't like originally.
But this is not the place to talk on end about the quality of the original games. It's to talk about them as ports! Capcom seems to have a great job with Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy, based on the cases I played. The sprites and animations look clean, to the point the games look more modern than they actually are. It's in contrast with the retro look of the Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy PS4 port, which preserved the look of the original games. I'm not really surprised at how good the fifth and sixth games look, since they first came out on the 3DS. But considering Apollo Justice was initially a DS game, I'm truly impressed. I guess it's not a surprise considering how Capcom managed to make the original Ace Attorney trilogy look so good on modern consoles when they started out on the GBA.
There are several differences between this port and Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy. The most obvious one is in the menu and UI. As ports of newer games, the menus look way nicer without clashing with the game's aesthetic. They're also very easy to navigate The main difference that I enjoy is how you can change the language and continue from where you left off. Originally, if you wanted to change the language, you had to start the chapter over. However, in this one, you can simply go to the main menu and then back to your save file. This is a fun one if you're like me and enjoy comparing translations with the original text to see how the team localized certain turns of phrases. Shu Takumi has unique idiosyncrasies in his writing that Capcom has always translated in creative ways while preserving his particular brand of humor.
Another thing that's nice is turning off the Consultation from the fifth and sixth games. The fifth game in particular was a really weak entry not only because of its writing and hard focus on new characters, but its difficulty level. It was almost ridiculously easy. The game told you everything you needed to examine and everyone you needed to talk to. You could also Consult in court, in which the characters would direct you to an answer if you kept messing up. These days, lots of games have an easy mode for those who just want the game's story. At the time, this could have been such an accessibility feature. But the fact that they were in the game by default was a little annoying, so I'm glad Capcom lets us disable them in the ports. The notebook (literally a to-do list) is also less intrusive than I remember.
So far, I've not run into any issues in terms of the graphics or the localization. I note the localization because I remember the fifth game in particular having lots of typos. Either they appear later in the game or the localization team performed some QA for the port. The only issue I came across was the audio bugging out but that was because I turned my Switch on and off at ten-minute intervals while watching an eSport tournament, so that's less to do with the game and more to do with me. I look forward to experiencing the whole collection and see my boy Apollo get some justice.
Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy will come out for the PS4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Windows PC via Steam on January 25, 2024. Nintendo Switch version previewed.

Arc System Works revealed "Extras" by Molly Daisy Scarpine is the theme song for Elphelt Valentine in Guilty Gear Strive. The company also released the five-and-a-half minutes-long song on multiple digital music platforms, including Spotify and YouTube Music.
Elphelt Valentine made her playable debut as a post-release character in the 2014 entry Guilty Gear Xrd -Sign-. Bandai Namco, which handles Guilty Gear Strive's releases in Asia and Europe, unveiled Elphelt's addition to the roster. Players can immediately purchase access to the DLC character since December 8, 2023. She appears as the 26th character in the overall roster and the second one in Season Pass 3, which started with Johnny in August 2023.
The Starter Guide video that Arc System Works published on Elphelt's release date shows that she has a very different playing style from the Xrd sub-series, where she could snipe her opponents from afar. Although she still fights with firearms, Arc System Works brought her a new "Chain Lollipop" chain combo system that plays similarly to Noel Vermillion in the BlazBlue series.
Guilty Gear Strive is available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, PC, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One. Elphelt Valentine is immediately available as a new DLC character, and her Strive theme song "Extras" is also available to listen to on digital music platforms.
