PCGamesN Friday, January 19, 2024 12:42 PM What are the best Palworld beginner's tips? The monster-taming genre might have been popularized on Nintendo handhelds and retro home consoles, but it's enjoyed growing popularity on PC in recent years thanks to the likes of Temtem, Coromon, and Cassette Beasts. Sure, you can be the very best, like no one ever was – but in this iteration of the creature collector, you can enforce that title with an assault rifle. PCGamesN Friday, January 19, 2024 12:12 PM The YouTuber and film-maker behind legendary Half-Life series Freeman's Mind is planning a class-action lawsuit against Ubisoft over the shutdown of racing game The Crew. Ross Scott, also known by his channel name Accursed Farms, claims that the closure of The Crew's servers, scheduled for Sunday March 31, represents a "gray area" in videogame consumer law that he would like to challenge. Scott's contention centers on the fact that, since The Crew is only playable online, after the game's servers are closed, it will no longer be accessible to anybody who owns it, whether digitally or via a physical copy. The Half-Life film-maker, who voices a parody version of in his long-running YouTube series, argues that Ubisoft rendered The Crew "unusable and deprived it of all value after the point of sale." |
PCGamesN Friday, January 19, 2024 12:04 PM Up until now, most talk has been of the Intel Arrow Lake processor launch being right at the tail end of 2024. Arrow Lake is the direct followup to the just-launched Meteor Lake range that is currently appearing in hundreds of new gaming laptops, thin and light laptops, and other mobile devices, including the MSI Claw gaming handheld. However, Meteor Lake hasn't seen a release on desktop. Instead, it's the Intel 14th gen Raptor Lake chips that launched last year that desktop gamers have been stuck with. PCGamesN Friday, January 19, 2024 11:49 AM Is there Palworld evolution? If you're a fan of the monster-taming genre, then you'll know that there's nothing quite as satisfying as watching a harmless cuddly critter transform into a fearsome beast. However, you might be looking at your high-level Lamball or Cattiva and wondering when exactly you can expect that to happen, if ever. Wonder no more, because we've got the answers. Many games like Pokemon opt for an evolution mechanic of some kind to represent your Pals growing stronger while also offering a new way to discover new monsters, and it stands to reason that Palworld would follow this trend. However, it's not as simple as throwing your Palworld Pals into Palworld fighting until puberty hits. As with any creature collection game, though, one of the most crucial aspects is breeding. Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Friday, January 19, 2024 3:50 PM Last Epoch is gunning for the action-RPG crown long held by Diablo (and recently contested by the likes of Path of Exile and Grim Dawn). Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Friday, January 19, 2024 3:00 PM Genshin Impact's next update, version 4.4, will drop on January 31st. As well as bringing back the game's Lantern Festival with rewards including a new outfit, Vibrant Harriers Aloft in Spring Breeze will bring the usual additions of new characters, quests and a boss. There'll also be a new area showcased with some shiny new visual tech, that you'll be able to explore by transforming into a flying fish. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Friday, January 19, 2024 2:30 PM For a game that's been repeatedly described as "Pokémon with machineguns", the first thing that strikes me about Palworld is just how un-Pokémon-like it actually is. To its credit, it does do quite a good Pokémon Legends: Arceus impression when you first step out on its big, Breath Of The Wild-style hilltop and take in the open world vista of its monster-stuffed starting continent. But if the opening moments of washing up on the island in nothing but your very scantily clad undies hadn't already given it away (seriously, why do shipwrecks always destroy the clothes you had on, but not your smalls underneath?), then the ream of tutorial prompts about punching trees to get more wood, building bases, putting pals to work on said bases, and the endless parade of crafting technologies you'll need to unlock to actually do anything on this godforsaken rock will quickly pull the wool clear away from your hopeful little face. For underneath the cute round eyes of its cover stars, Palworld is really a survival game wearing the dead skin suits of Game Freak's catch 'em all monster friends. In a lot of cases, those skin suits are quite literal, such are the blatant palette swaps and so-close-to-copyright-infringement-I-can't-believe-Nintendo's-lawyers-haven't-shut-this-down-years-ago rip-off creatures on display here. For that reason alone, Palworld can feel about as soulless and cynical as it comes. But that's not the worst of it. Even aside from all the survival gubbins, base building and sweatshop automation practices shoved down your throat, Palworld is just an awful example of monster-catching games in general. If it's a Pokémon game on PC you're after, go and play Cassette Beasts. Go and play Coromon, TemTem, or Monster Sanctuary. Anything but this. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Friday, January 19, 2024 1:49 PM Palworld was obviously destined for success the moment a million games journalists and Twitter users wrote "Pokémon with machine guns". (Acceptable alternate nicknames include "Eevees with uzis" and "Abras who'll stab-ya".) Having finally launched into Early Access on Steam and Game Pass this week, that prophecy has rung true as the monster-catching survival game has caught (ha, ha) so many players that its servers are struggling to handle the load. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Friday, January 19, 2024 11:59 AM It always breaks my heart a bit when a game I've been looking forward to for a while absolutely biffs it on arrival. Having quite enjoyed Golf Club Wasteland a few years ago (now called Golf Club Nostalgia for, I don't know, reasons), I was quite pumped when developers Demagog Studios announced not one, but two further games set in the same post-apocalyptic universe. The first to come out (albeit only on Netflix at the moment) was the turn-based strategy game Highwater (also a bit of a dud, based on the early Steam demo I played last year), but it's the second game, The Cub (out today on Steam) that has prompted this current moment of teeth-sucking sadness. I've been playing a bit of it over the last week, and oh man, it's trying so, so hard to be like Limbo and Inside, but just... doing quite a terrible job of it all. I was looking forward to any excuse I could get to have the soothing sounds of Golf Club's dystopian Radio Nostalgia From Mars show back in my ear drums, but alas. I simply cannot hear it over the sound of my own screams of frustration. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Friday, January 19, 2024 11:46 AM We've known about Moonlighter devs' upcoming RTS tower defence hybrid Cataclismo for a little while now. But now we know a couple more things. It's set to release in Q2 of this year, and there's a demo on Steam right now if you'd like to give it a try. Expect to make nice fortresses out of Lego-style bricks, then defend them from hordes of horrors. I'd say that's a recipe for a good time. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Friday, January 19, 2024 11:36 AM A "third-person cyberpunk fighting MOBA". A villainous esports team owner. A horde of teenagers Naruto-running through a convention centre. Even as a keen viewer of Leverage: Redemption, I was leery of the heist-o-rama tackling esports. And sure, its fake video game is baffling, but I was surprised by how many notes the esports episode hit right. With an Illumatrons team overworked to breaking point by an egotistical owner hawking dangerous supplements, it'll take a con, a frame, fisticuffs, and powerful cheat software to save the day. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Friday, January 19, 2024 10:55 AM I disliked turn-based RPG Kingsvein at first. Quite a bit, in fact. An earlier version of this review would have been a very negative on, filled mostly with complaints and annoyances about opaque and frustrating systems, most of which I've since got over as the intent behind its design has become more clear. It could definitely explain some things better, and its inscrutably tiny graphics remain a minor nuisance. But it's grown on me a lot, and though it may not be quite the kind of turn-based RPG I get on with best, it's an enjoyable one with a refreshing lack of bloat and timewasting, and with a class and combat system that will be pure catnip to a particular kind of player. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Friday, January 19, 2024 10:31 AM The phrase "best foot forwards" implies the second foot will never be as good as the first, and that's unfortunately the case with Nancy Drew: Stay Tuned For Danger. It has a 10/10 pun name and introduces/strengthens concepts that I expect will become series mainstays as we continue with this project, but this is definitely in "difficult second album" territory. I don't hate it! But it's no Secrets Can Kill, and I think that's in part down to increased ambition, as our Nance is called upon to solve a poison pen puzzle at a TV studio. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Friday, January 19, 2024 9:27 AM Earlier this week, Blizzard announced what's coming up in Season 3 of Diablo 4, and underneath the mountain's worth of lore and loot updates, there was the surprisingly good news that WASD key controls were finally being added to help provide even more accurate and precise movement in the game over the series' traditional mouse clicks. Not that any of them could decide how to actually pronounce WASD when it came to talking about them on last night's Developer Update stream, though, as there were competing cries of "was-dee", "wased" and "double-you-ey-es-dee" all over the shop as they debated this clearly very "controversial topic" live on air. Read on for more details about what they're hoping to achieve with WASD controls in the game, but more importantly: how do you pronounce WASD? Let's get a poll up asap. |

When I first heard about Palworld, my reaction was confusion. On the surface, it's an open world Pokemon clone. Cool, give the people what they want. However, the trailer showed creatures using guns, as well as creatures working an assembly line mass producing those guns. Oh, and there's a farm everyone's happily working on too, I guess. There is a lot going on here, and I'm not sure it all makes sense.
I have now gotten my hands on the game in Early Access and thankfully it's a lot more straightforward than it initially seems. That said, its identity is still strange.
Let's start with the basics. Despite appearances, Palworld isn't primarily a Pokemon clone. You don't play as a plucky kid who's about to head off into the world on an adventure. You instead play as a nameless avatar who washes up on a beach with nothing to their name. That includes clothes, as you strut about in only a few rags to preserve your modesty.
The opening of Palworld is firmly in survival game territory. In these early stages, your priority is to simply not starve or die from hypothermia during the cold of the night. Catching some new animal friends is low on the agenda. You'll spend multiple nights huddled round a campfire you made with gathered wood until you are able to get yourself to a barely sustainable state. It is, honestly, a rough time that doesn't leave a great first impression.
Once you do get some clothes and basic tools (plus some mutton from the local adorable lamb population), you get into the real point of the game: enslaving animals for fun and profit. This is where the next bit of confusion comes in, because if you're expecting cute, wholesome Pokemon times, you might want to look elsewhere.
Sure, you capture creatures (known as Pals) with orb-shaped devices that turn them to your side, but the friendship from the obvious inspiration is rarely on the cards after this point. There is a lot of criticism of Pokemon as a series that suggests it promotes dog fighting, but Palworld insists this can go further. As well as a party of Pals who battle alongside you, you can also gather Pals at your base and put them to work. They will work tirelessly to gather resources, assemble items and build structures for you. You are not building a gang of beloved pets. You are constructing an assembly line.
This gives Palworld a strange vibe. The Pals are adorable creatures, happily frolicking around the fields making cute noises. They will even do little joyful dances every time they complete a craft project for you. But the whole time they're serving you as diligent unpaid factory workers, which has an unpleasant undertone.
This was most obvious when I encountered a Lipmunk, a cute green squirrel like creature with wind powers. It's a sweet, innocent being shaped like a friend. However, as soon as I caught one, my Tech Tree immediately revealed the option to unlock Lipmunk's Submachine Gun. It was massive tonal whiplash.
It's hard to know how to feel about any of this. I can't decide if this is genius satire or if the creators genuinely cannot tell how utterly weird it all is. It feels like a parody based off the social criticisms of Pokemon, and yet everything Palworld does feels incredibly sincere.
However, I can't deny that Palworld is a compelling game to play. The gameplay loop of collecting resources, managing your worker Pals and exploring the vast world for its secret is interesting. The survival elements don't get in the way too much, thankfully. Your character only gets hungry once a day while clothes instantly negate any concerns about being cold. This leaves you free to focus on seeking out new Pals, building your little homestead and investigating the mysterious towers on the horizon. It's relaxing, and anyone who's a fan of Story of Seasons or Factorio is likely to find something to enjoy here.
Exploration is especially fun, as new areas often reveal new Pals. Hiking over a hill and suddenly seeing a chubby penguin or a flying manta ray you haven't seen before is always a thrill. Sometimes you'll encounter random challenges, like a group of thugs who you can fight to stop them abusing the wildlife (that's your job, after all). Sometimes you'll encounter a roaming boss Pal. There are even hidden dungeons complete with their own challenges and, most importantly, rewards. There's a lot to discover in this world and it feels rewarding to wander about.
The ominous towers also pose their own major challenges. Here you fight major bosses, which are genuinely tough and require a lot of build up to attempt. They are usually against Syndicate members accompanied by large Pals, and they pack a ton of fire power and health. They feel more like something you'd encounter in Monster Hunter. The tonal whiplash is still present though, as few Monster Hunter fights star a Pokemon Gym Leader riding an electric Totoro in the Astral Plane from Control. At this point, I stopped asking questions.
There is little context for these boss fights though. Story is practically non-existent aside from a few generic NPCs and a small settlement which felt haphazardly placed. I don't know who the Syndicate are, why their thugs are everywhere or why their leaders are inside magic towers. However, this is an Early Access release so it's likely the developers are focused on getting the gameplay elements right before trying to explain any of this more directly.
Speaking of Early Access, it's surprising how stable Palworld is in its current state. I barely encountered any performance issues. I fell through the world once and I'm constantly fighting with the overly sensitive cursor on the Fast Travel map, but that's all. Everything runs smoother than you may expect at this stage.
Palworld is an odd experience. It's a tonal mess, with too many systems that shouldn't work together. And yet, it's somehow more fun than that ever should be. It's not exactly the Pokemon open world game you might be expecting, but it is a surprisingly compelling survival game.
Palworld is out now in Early Access for PC, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.

Square Enix announced it will hold a Final Fantasy VII Rebirth event in London, England. It will take place at 6pm local time on January 26, 2024.
This is going to be a free event, however it already "sold out" on Eventbrite. It will consist of a photo op, refreshments, and an opportunity to meet and get autographs from the Producer Yoshinori Kitase and Director Naoki Hamaguchi. There will also apparently be a Q&A segment, as the announcement page noted people could get a chance to ask them questions.
As a reminder, Kitase has been involved with the Final Fantasy series since Final Fantasy V for the SNES. He's been involved with multiple Final Fantasy VII games ahead of Rebirth, including the original, Before Crisis: FFVII, Crisis Core: FFVII, Dirge of Cerberus: FFVII, and the 2020 remake. Meanwhile, Hamaguchi worked as a co-director on the first entry in this remake trilogy and on Crisis Core: FFVII Reunion.
It isn't uncommon for Square Enix to host events like these ahead of or around releases of its games. For example, it held a Paws of Valisthea event in Darlinghurst, Australia ahead of Final Fantasy XVI.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will come to the PS5 on February 29, 2024, with the exclusivity arrangement ending on May 29, 2024. FFVII Remake is available for the PS4, PS5, and PC, and FFVII Ever Crisis is available on the PC and mobile devices.

Hours after its debut on Steam Early Access, Pocketpair announced that Palworld downloads already passed one million on social media. The game debuted on January 18, 2024 on PCs via Steam and the Xbox One and Xbox Series X.
Here's the official announcement, which included a piece of celebratory art with a number of Pals. The developer noted it only took about eight hours for it to reach that milestone.
In addition to the downloads milestone, a quick check on SteamDB as of 12pm ET on January 19, 2024 showed Palworld is the third most-played title on Steam at the moment. Its current concurrents at the time of writing were 362,396, with the all-time peak noted as being 370,128. It was just below Counterstrike 2 and DOTA 2, but ended up beating out titles like PUBG, Apex Legends, GTA V, and Baldur's Gate 3.
However, it is also important to note that people may encounter some bugs in these early hours and days. The title is in early access. For example, due to the unexpected demand, there is server instability that Pocketpair said it will address. It is also releasing patches and hotfixes as necessary, with the first one fixing an issue that would result in a black screen appearing and the game being unplayable.
Palworld is available in Early Access on PCs via Steam and the Xbox One and Series X.

The life-size Psyduck plush will make its return in Japan. The Japanese Pokemon Center Online store has opened a new pre-order batch for the large plush that first appeared in 2020. The item has a price tag of 30,800 yen, or around $207.50 with the exchange rate on January 19, 2024.
The Psyduck plush will have an overall height of around 80 cm (31 inches / 2'07"), which is accurate to the Pokemon's listing in the Pokedex. The plush will also have an overall width of 57 cm (~22.44 in) and depth of 75 cm (~29.5 in). But while the original Psyduck would weigh 19.6 kg / 43.2 lbs, this plush will have a lighter weight at just 4.1 kg / 9 lbs. The newly restocked plush is being made in Vietnam with polyester for the exterior and polyurethane foam, EVA, and polypropylene for the insides.
When the life-size Psyduck plush originally appeared in 2020, it was available to order in both Japan and North America. However, the new restock so far seems to only apply in Japan. As of January 19, 2024, the originally Chinese-made $279.99 plush is still listed as "Out of stock" on the English Pokemon Center web store.
Pokemon Center Japan will close pre-orders for the restocked life-size Psyduck plush on February 19, 2024, or earlier if it has hit the stock limit. It will start shipping the items in mid-July 2024.

Pocketpair announced that a new Palworld hotfix is live, with the patch making the game playable for those who experienced a bug involving a black screen. The developer's announcement noted it repairs a network environment issue.
Here's the official announcement. There are no patch notes for this update. It also seems that the only thing being addressed in this hotfix patch is the Palworld black screen bug. Pocketpair also didn't go into why the problem happened in the first place.
As a reminder, Palworld entered early access on January 18, 2024. As such, bugs and issues are to be expected due to the title being in development. It is a survival game with monster catching and taming elements. By using Pal Spheres to catch Pals, you can have the creatures assist in gathering resources or taking part in gunfights.
The new patch wasn't the only update to appear on January 19, 2024. The developer also noted on social media that due to demand, there are some server issues. It noted it is aware of the instability issue and is working on it. It recommended waiting a bit or retrying to get into the game.

Capcom has revealed that it will release Ed as the third post-release character for Street Fighter 6 in February 2024. The company confirmed the new release window—narrowed from Winter 2024—by uploading a new teaser trailer featuring the fighter.
The trailer also shows a glimpse of Ed's fighting style. He primarily fights with a boxing style, but he can also imbue his punches with Psycho Power. Ed also uses the power to pull his opponent and prevent him from hitting a bystander in the trailer.
The new teaser trailer starring Ed is also available to watch right below:
Ed made his debut in Street Fighter V, just like Rashid who appeared in Street Fighter 6 earlier as the first post-launch character. But while Rashid was part of Street Fighter V's 16-character launch roster, Ed joined the previous game's list as the third Season 2 fighter, the ninth post-release addition, and the twenty-fifth overall character.
Capcom will still add more playable characters to Street Fighter 6 after Ed's inclusion in February 2024. The company has revealed plans for the series' staple character Akuma to join the new game's roster in Spring 2024.
Street Fighter 6 is available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X, and PC. Capcom has sold over 3 million units of the game as of January 3, 2024. Ed will appear as the third post-release character in the fighting game in February 2024.
