Kotaku Thursday, April 25, 2024 11:35 AM Piggybacking off the popularity of the Amazon Prime series, Fallout 4 just received a next-gen update. While this will likely only make the game grow in popularity even more than it already has in the past few weeks, it may have a less-than-stellar impact on those playing the game with mods. It might, in fact, break… |
Kotaku Thursday, April 25, 2024 11:05 AM I don't know that many folks expected Helldivers 2 to be one of the biggest games of the year. Massive games like Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, even Palworld, have come and gone in about the same time, but everyone still seems to be playing Helldivers 2 months after release. And for at least one person, that ubiquity is… |
Kotaku Thursday, April 25, 2024 10:50 AM Gears of War has been dormant for a fair while. The last mainline game in Xbox's much-beloved third-person shooter series was 2019's Gears 5. Kotaku Thursday, April 25, 2024 10:40 AM While Epic Games' now ubiquitous battle royale shooter Fortnite may dominate the genre, it was PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds that started the trend. Kotaku Thursday, April 25, 2024 10:00 AM We're just a few days out from the much-anticipated Early Access launch of the current most Wishlisted game on Steam: Manor Lords. But despite the hype, no one knows how much the medieval city-builder will cost to play. The devs say that's to prevent misinformation and pre-order scams. |
Kotaku Thursday, April 25, 2024 9:50 AM Nintendo might be stomping around the internet, crushing all joy in its path, but it still knows how to make a cracking game. Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door was absolutely one of those, and is looking like it will be all over again in five minutes of new footage from this year's upcoming remake. |
PCGamesN Thursday, April 25, 2024 11:59 AM What are the best Manor Lords settings? Below, you'll find our picks for the best settings so you can build your empire with the best view possible. The best graphics cards will barely break a sweat when running Manor Lords, largely due to its forgiving system requirements. PCGamesN Thursday, April 25, 2024 11:44 AM Your decisions in strategy games are normally quite practical. Harvest a new area in Civilization 6 because you need resources. Buy a load of tanks in Command and Conquer because the enemy base is guarded by turrets. Divide the workers according to vitality in Frostpunk. The best strategy experience of 2024 however is very different. Couched in psychology, duplicity, and political double-dealing, it's a unique game of paranoia and intrigue, and it just got even bigger and better thanks to a new DLC, out now. PCGamesN Thursday, April 25, 2024 11:49 AM What are the best Fallout 4 builds? The wasteland is a tough place to exist. It doesn't matter if you're a veteran of the RPG or you're coming fresh from the Fallout TV series, it pays to know the most powerful builds for your character so that you can survive against near-impossible odds, and thrive in the post-apocalypse. There is no one way to play this RPG game. Each character is a beautiful, potentially horrible snowflake; it's tough out there, and you've got to do whatever it takes to survive. Some people want to be a walking juggernaut, decimating anything in their path, while others (us) opt for a more… devious approach, swindling their way across the wasteland. You can be who you want to be in Fallout 4, but just in case you need a little inspiration, here are our picks for the best builds. PCGamesN Thursday, April 25, 2024 11:32 AM Constructing the perfect automated industrial complex is one of the most satisfying feelings in some of the best sandbox building games. For the hardcore, the likes of Factorio and Dyson Sphere Program offer some of the deepest systems, while slightly more casual-friendly approaches like Satisfactory and Hydroneer offer an easier path of entry for newcomers. Oddsparks An Automation Adventure is an adorable but detailed new take on the genre that blends it with a little real-time strategy, with co-op for four players or more, and it just launched on Steam. PCGamesN Thursday, April 25, 2024 11:32 AM Is Manor Lords Steam Deck compatible? Performance isn't the problem when it comes to getting the best out of Manor Lords on Steam Deck, even when the game is still in early access. A simple settings tweak will achieve an admirable frame rate, but the lack of controller support might be too much for some to overcome. Tested on our Steam Deck OLED, a console we consider to be the best handheld gaming PC, Manor Lords proved a simple task on the graphical front. While this may seem obvious, we've had issues with city-builders in the past, so it's no small feat to have the game running so smoothly on a portable device. PCGamesN Thursday, April 25, 2024 11:08 AM Following a deluge of reports about game crashes on Intel Core i9 CPUs, motherboard makers are seemingly scrambling to offer solutions. PCGamesN Thursday, April 25, 2024 11:38 AM As the weeks pass by since the Horizon Forbidden West launch, it's only right to hope for a steady stream of updates to ensure the PC port plays as smoothly as possible. Sure enough, Nixxes has just issued the Horizon Forbidden West Complete Edition 1.3.55.0 update, bringing with it a particularly nice new feature in the shape of Intel XeSS 1.3. Intel XeSS is big blue's equivalent to Nvidia DLSS and AMD FSR, in that it provides a smarter way for games to render from a lower render resolution to a higher upscaled output resolution without putting a big dent in image quality. As a result, you can boost your Horizon Forbidden West frame rate while hardly noticing a difference in the look of the game. Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, April 25, 2024 11:00 AM This week saw the first (small) look at the new and upcoming Hobbit-themed cosy life sim Tales Of The Shire, plus the news that Embracer group is splitting into three, including a Middle-earth And Friends group. We thus use this as an excuse to spend some time talking about The Lord Of The Rings games we'd like to see, plus our favourite Rings games from days gone by (and also Gollum, and also we do impressions of Gollum). Nate has been playing an impressive number of games, including one that did not allow him to invent the stick and therefore hampered his progress. We also talk about AI NPCs again, because one of them tried to get James drunk. Plus: some lovely recommendations to round off your weekly pod (one of them is a long life meat product). |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, April 25, 2024 11:00 AM The announcement trailer for Lost Legions opens with a Roman Emperor bellowing "GIVE ME BACK MY LEGIONS" like a kid who's just had his pudding taken away. I'd just had a big swig of coffee before watching, and was instantly swept off by visions of an apoplectic Roman bigwig rampaging through the forests of darkest Germania, gluing abducted legionnaires together into a sort of Octavian katamari... and then they revealed that it's another open world survival game, with no less than two trailer beats dedicated to the act of hacking down a tree. I mean no disrespect to developers Tarock Interactive - they're not to blame for my addled imagination - but there are many open world survival games and as a weary Ed Thorn recently noted, the majority are heavily frontloaded with wilderness carpentry. I don't think survival games should emphasise wood-chopping in their announcement footage. It's like doing a Call of Duty montage of people getting shot three seconds from spawn. Still, if there's no katamari mechanic, the idea of raising a small army of mostly AI-controlled Roman soldiers behind enemy lines has a certain charm. Without further ado, here's the trailer. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, April 25, 2024 10:30 AM I think the stronger your interest in white goods becomes, that's how you know you're transitioning from a youngster to a slightly oldster. The first thing I did recently when I stepped into my friend's house was compliment him on his new washing machine. "A Samsung! Nice dials on this, eh?", I said as I twisted the dial and it pleasantly bumped from mixed to delicate wash. What can I say? I appreciate the mundane and the useful. And from the times I've played Lethal Company, I've come to think it's also a game about appreciating the mundane, too. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, April 25, 2024 9:45 AM Pine: A Story Of Loss, which stars a bereaved woodworker and thus may be a play on the double meaning of 'pine', is a gorgeously animated interactive fiction game that sees you performing farming chores and wordlessly reminiscing upon cherished memories. It's short - designed to be played in a couple of sittings - and while the fiction is the focus here, you'll spend time gardening and whittling in bespoke minigames as you find out more about the woodworker's relationship. The publisher describes it thusly: As each season changes, the woodworker must prepare for what's to come. Tasks such as collecting water, thatching the roof, or planting crops each bring back vivid memories of his wife. Desperate to not let her memory disappear, the woodworker captures these moments in beautiful wood carvings. Yet, while each one is a promise to her memory, they soon become a dangerous obsession. |

By now, I can confidently say that the RPS team are scrap collecting experts and can easily meet the quota set by the enigmatic Company. Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, April 25, 2024 8:40 AM Fallout 4's "next generation" update goes live today. Timed to capitalise on the Fallout TV show's mad popularity, it'll encumber the 2015-released open world wasteland RPG with widescreen and ultra-widescreen support, Creation Kit fixes, and a "variety of quest updates" across Steam, Microsoft Store and GOG. There will be new items for the Creation Club, including the Makeshift Weapon Pack, which lets you blast people with a piggy bank like Elon Musk, and a new quest, Echoes Of The Past, in which you try to "stop The Enclave from spreading their dangerous ideology and gaining a foothold in the Commonwealth". They're also bringing the game to the Epic Games Store and upgrading it to Steam Deck Verified status. Such days of bounty we do live through, but beware - it's possible the update will break existing Fallout 4 mods, which will be a problem for the very large numbers of you who've been downloading mods after watching the show. Indeed, the possibility of today's update messing with mods has already seen the creators of the promising Fallout: London delay release to assess the damage. If you're similarly concerned, you might want to disable auto-updates right now. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, April 25, 2024 8:01 AM Most of my time in Lethal Company is full of tomfoolery, panicking, and ultimately letting the quota down. As I run back and forth from the ship, only able to carry four things at a time in my puny arms, I frequently see the various monster inhabitants of the game excelling at pretty much everything. The Forest Keeper has brawny strength and can travel across the map in a blink of an eye, the Eyeless Dogs can sniff out an intruder in next to no time and The Butler has dedicated his life to maintaining a mansion even after the owners have long since gone. This had me thinking - surely the various monster inhabitants of Lethal Company would make for a much better worker than myself? Sure, most of them are ravenous killing machines - but that fits with the core values of The Company. After all, most of your time spent in the game will be collecting scrap on distant moons to meet an arbitrary quota set by The Company. You'll then feed your pilfered belongings to the insatiable maw of a tentacled horror (otherwise known as the boss). You may be able to sympathise depending on your occupation. So, if the monsters in Lethal Company were given the chance to work for said company, which of them would make it as an employee of the month and which would crash and burn harder than me getting thrown from the airlock five times in a row? Join me as I peruse the CV's of my favourite monsters in Lethal Company (as far as I know only half of them have opposable thumbs) and advocate for which of them should be my replacement as The Company's new hire. After all, once this month's Games Club is finished I'm not sure they'll even let me back on the ship. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, April 25, 2024 7:32 AM The closest I have come to having any interest in sport is when I got really into reading about football hooligans, or like, Blood Bowl, but I do absolutely recognise the romance of it all. SUDDEN DEATH is a delicious free slice of playable art-pie that celebrates that romance. It is - says dev Cécile, who co-made the project with Nat Pussy and MOTHER GOOSE for collective Domino Club - "a game about love and sports. it's gay, it's very australian, and it's great." You can tell it's Australian quickly, because people call chips 'chippies', which makes me chuffed. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, April 25, 2024 7:25 AM Alien-infested submarine sim Barotrauma has received a chunky update, bringing two new-ish monsters into its lethal aquatic world. The shrimp-looking Mantis may be recognisable to veterans (it once appeared in pre-Steam builds). And the Viperling is a venomous variant of the existing Spineling (a thorny seaworm with hull-piercing porcupine-like spikes). But don't worry, the medical systems have also seen a "mini-rework", which means drugs like morphine are "less of a 'solution for everything'". Wait. What? Submariners in the game can still use morphine, opium and fentanyl to ease the pain of a monster attack, broken bones, wrecked organs, or be-bulleted body. However, the developers feel these drugs have been over-used. So they've rebalanced the opiates as part of their Blood in the Water update. Now the drugs have "a much higher risk of causing addiction and overdoses, and morphine heals much more slowly, making it less viable for combat-heavy situations." Well. Guess I'll just die. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, April 25, 2024 6:44 AM As an Assassin's Creed girlie, I enjoyed Assassin's Creed Mirage, a pared down (but still big game, which is really just proof of how bloated AAA games have gotten, but I'll stop because it's not time to take my personal bugbear for a walk) Ass Creed game that was closer to the simplicity of the older games in the stab 'em up stealth-action series. Yesterday creative director Stéphane Boudon and art director Jeal-Luc Sala took to Reddit for an AMA, and in response to a question about plans for Mirage DLC, Boudon said no - but that they have ideas for more stories for Basim. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, April 25, 2024 6:08 AM My experience with actual flight simulators typically amounts to approaching the runway far, far too quickly at far, far too perpendicular an angle, so perhaps I'm better off just flying folded-up bits of A4. Happily, that's exactly what Paper Sky, a "semi-open world paper plane adventure" from solo indie dev Brute Force, is offering. |

Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, April 25, 2024 4:17 AM I can feel some kind of sore throat bug coming on. It must be the baleful influence of Creative Assembly's latest free update for bellowing strategy bonanza Total War: Warhammer 3. Out 30th April, the update introduces Epidemius, Proctor of Pestilence - a new Nurgle Legendary Lord who gains rewards based on how many ickle diseases you've spread to other factions (already my favourite aspect of playing Nurgle in the game). Does Epidemius also get buffs if the player is infected by something? I hope so. It would be a consolation to know that my ailing trachea is contributing to the Nurgle cause. That's not the only new addition in TWW3 patch 5. They're also bringing a Gold Wizard hero, who is sort of Magneto but blingier, and a cursed crown that will make everybody hate you. Let's dig in. |

GameStop Canada revealed that its Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door Switch pre-order bonus offer offers people a chance to see the original GameCube box art and cover design again. There will be a slip cover that restores the original design.
The official social media post shared a glimpse at how the slipcover will look. In addition to the original Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door GameCube art with Mario surrounded by Peach, Goombella, Koops, Yoshi, and Hooktail, it also features the original GameCube logo and accents at the top. GameStop Canada didn't note if this will just be a paper slipcover or if it will be made of a more durable material. It did note that it will given to buyers when they pick up their copies of the game.

Here's the FFXIV song from FFXVI:
"The Rising Tide," which is the name of the DLC for Final Fantasy XVI, came out on April 18, 2024. Aside from a new story, there's also new endgame content, as well as new abilities that Clive can use. Aside from the "Torn from the Heavens" Orchestrion Roll, you can also get an Orchestrion Roll of "Through the Maelstrom," which is also from Final Fantasy XIV. CAG Osaka released a new gameplay video showcasing a real match of Hunter x Hunter: Nen x Impact. Three professional gamers—Fenritti, GO1, and Eita—played it.
This is only the first part of the Hunter x Hunter: Nen x Impact gameplay showcase. It's unknown if the second video will feature more of the same fighters or if we'll see new playable characters. So far, we know that you'll be able to play as Gon, Killua, Kurapika, Leorio, Hisoka, and Netero.
You can check out the video here:
In terms of the genre of fighting game, it'll be 3v3 in a 2D arena. The preview video shows off how you can use the characters' signature moves, as well as call in your teammates to aid you. It also shows the gamers enjoying their time playing and figuring out how to use their characters or combos. Though this seems to be the first time they're playing the game, they are able to chain together attacks after only a bit of practice. Time will tell if this is because the game is easy to pick up or if this is because they're professional gamers.
Hunter x Hunter: Nen x Impact is a fighting game based on the highly popular anime and manga series, Hunter x Hunter. Bushiroad stated earlier this month that a demo build of the game will be at EVO Japan 2024 and KSG2024. That version will feature the exact same six characters in this video.
Hunter x Hunter: Nen x Impact will come out on for the PS5, Windows PC via Steam, and Nintendo Switch.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is about to turn 20, and Nintendo is celebrating by giving everyone with a Switch a chance to head to Rogueport again. After spending early hours with the game and going through a preview session for it, it still feels like a fantastic vacation spot.
For those unfamiliar with the tale, which is possible given its age, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door begins with Princess Peach summoning Mario's aid again. When she was in the town of Rogueport, she learned about a treasure and found a map to reach it. She included it in a note to him requesting his assistance. However, when he arrives in the scruffy city, he finds she's missing. A chance encounter with a Goomba student named Goombella and her professor gives him a chance to learn more about the Thousand Year Door below the town and the Crystal Stars that can unlock it, and off they go to start the treasure hint and hopefully reunite with Princess Peach along the way.
As The Thousand-Year Door is a classic Paper Mario tale, it is packed with the sort of personality absent in more recent releases such as Sticker Star and Color Splash. Toads and NPCs have unique identities and fun personalities. Battles are turn-based with timed input attacks. Locations are varied. There are even badges to equip to enhance or add abilities and "curses" that grant access to new areas by giving Mario the power to do things like fold himself up into a paper airplane. It's all very cohesive and colorful, just as it was years before.
Between both early hours with the game and a preview session, there were also insights into how things have changed between the GameCube and Switch releases of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. One involved a form of unification. During the session, we were able to see a certain badge that would change the sound of Mario's hammer to assist in a fight against a certain opponent. In the original GameCube English release, it was a cricket, but it was a frog sound in all other regions. Now for the Switch release, it is changed to frog so the badge has the same sound effect everywhere.
However, even early on quality of life adjustments came up during the Paper Mario: Thousand-Year Door preview session and my time playing the game. You can always call upon Goombella's insights, for example. If you press the ZL trigger, she will chime in with what you are supposed to be doing, even if she isn't your current partner. The Partner Ring lets you quickly switch between all of the characters you've found to work alongside Mario. There is a Practice area, to help you perfect timing for attacks and guards. Also, for people who want to recall the original release, there is a Nostalgic Tunes badge that brings back the GameCube soundtrack.
It feels like Nintendo is setting up the Switch version of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door for success. The experience feels so solid in its early hours. It looks and plays well on the Switch in the initial chapters. There are already hints as to how things ended up updated either to provide a sense of cohesion among versions or to add quality of life features to call back to the original release or make it more comfortable to play. I can't wait to spend more time in Rogueport and to see what others think when they get to return too.
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door will come to the Nintendo Switch on May 23, 2024.

Facepunch Studios and Valve will remove all Nintendo related content from the Garry's Mod Steam Workshop at the company's request. Some of these uploads are over 20 years old.
In the statement, the developers explained that the removal of Nintendo related content is because of Nintendo's takedown requests, rather than a mistake. The statement added that it's fair for Nintendo to do this, because it has the choice to allow or restrict their content's usage elsewhere. The developer noted people should respect this decision.
As of the time of writing, looking up various keywords related to Nintendo in the workshop can garner tens and hundreds of results. Because of how much content there is, the developers hope people can help by deleting their Nintendo related content from the Garry's Mod workshop.
Nintendo has a reputation from its extreme strictness and protectiveness of its IPs and assets. Gary Bowser, who was part of the hacking group Team Xecuter, went to jail and has to pay a $14.5 million fine. The creators of Yuzu—a Nintendo Switch emulation program—had to pay a hefty $2.4 million settlement fee after Nintendo sued them. These choices often spark criticism and controversy online.
Garry's Mod is in the process of removing all Nintendo related content from the Steam workshop. Those who uploaded anything Nintendo related in the past would be doing the developers a favor deleting them from the service.

Another Crab's Treasure: How to beat Nephro, Captain of the Guard Upon facing this guard, he'll immediately be hostile to you and deem you a lawbreaker. He now believes it's his rightful duty to slay you, leaving you to tackle a pretty nasty boss fight. You can beat Nephro, Captain of the Guard in Another Crab's Treasure by relying on accurate dodging and inflicting heavy attacks when you can, as well as hitting him at the end of his attack animations. Nephro has a few different types of attacks. His main one is a horizontal slash that you can easily time and dodge in any direction. Preferably, dodge closer to him, as your weapon doesn't have a long range and you want to get those small hits in whenever he&... |
