Kotaku Wednesday, June 12, 2024 1:55 PM Elden Ring is known for its challenging combat and hazardous exploration, so it's reasonable to expect its Shadow of the Erdtree expansion to be an ultra-difficult experience. Kotaku Wednesday, June 12, 2024 1:40 PM The first thing to know about the recently announced Horizon Lego Adventures is that it's a Lego game first and an adaptation of Horizon Zero Dawn second. Kotaku Wednesday, June 12, 2024 12:10 PM BioWare's upcoming RPG Dragon Age: The Veilguard seems heavily influenced by 2011's Dragon Age II. PCGamesN Wednesday, June 12, 2024 12:33 PM Gods and guns. What more could you want? While the flintlock fantasy subgenre has long since carved out a space in genre fiction thanks to Naomi Novik's Temeraire and Brian McClellan's Powder Mage series, it remains shockingly elusive in videogames. GreedFall and Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire certainly come close, but their scales are tipped further towards high fantasy than they are gunpowder and military dress. PCGamesN Wednesday, June 12, 2024 12:32 PM Nvidia has famously been skyrocketing in value recently, off the back of its specialist AI chips being snapped up in the tens of thousands with huge profit margins. That appears to have struck a nerve - or at least been noticed - with Nvidia's main chip manufacturing partner, TSMC, hinting that it could increase its GPU production prices for Nvidia, so it can reap a little more of what Nvidia is sowing. How this might affect future pricing of the best graphics cards is hard to say, as the implication here is that TSMC would be charging more for higher-profit items, rather than just charging more across the board. However, it does give us a little cause for concern, as if TSMC does raise its prices to produce gaming GPUs, we would reasonably expect Nvidia to pass on the price hike to consumers. PCGamesN Wednesday, June 12, 2024 10:54 AM In November 2021, the Nintendo Switch saw the launch of Shin Megami Tensei 5 - the latest mainline entry in Atlus' JRPG series that led to the more widely known - and arguably more popular - Persona games. Despite positive reviews, the ambitious SMT 5 was inarguably held back by its launch platform of choice, with performance woes and other issues preventing it from earning the widespread mainstream recognition it deserved in line with its spinoff counterparts. Almost three years later, Shin Megami Tensei 5: Vengeance is far more than just a visually enhanced and more technically stable version of the original release. An equivalent to the likes of Persona 4 Golden and Persona 5 Royal, Vengeance is an almost-perfect entry point to Shin Megami Tensei for both JRPG newcomers and longtime fans alike. Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Wednesday, June 12, 2024 1:03 PM When I was a kid, one of my absolute favourite things to do on the PC was to mess around with a free virtual Felix - like the cat from the cat food adverts - who would roam around the Windows XP desktop, chasing balls of string between program windows and curling up to take a nap on the taskbar. I have no idea where the game came from - a dream, perhaps - but 30 years later, I still think about it as a perfectly formed way to lose hours on the PC without actually doing anything. |

I'll need to clean my keyboard soon. I keep taking screenshots of Felvidek. I can't take enough. I want to make a scrapbook of every character and every line. Neither my laundry nor keyboard will ever be clean forever either, but if I hate Felvidek for emphasising that, I love it for reminding me that all the best art is buttressed by an irremovable layer of deep, thick grime. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Wednesday, June 12, 2024 9:00 AM No, it's not Silversun. Sit down, Brian. Let somebody else have a go at answering. Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector is a sci-fi RPG with plenty of dice and a heavy nod towards tabletop role-playing. The first Citizen Sleeper saw your bio-robotic protagonist landing on a donut-shaped space station where they learned to make a new life for themselves among interstellar farmers and ramen-serving rapscallions. In the sequel, a demo of which I've played [smug face], the hook is a little different. This time you're being pursued across a bunch of backwater truck stops, colonies, depots, and derelicts. All the while your misfit crew will clash and commingle. You still haven't got it, have you? Ugh. I suppose I'll let the game's designer tell you then. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Wednesday, June 12, 2024 7:52 AM Disco Samurai is a game that's so difficult I'd have given up playing sooner if it didn't contain so many of my absolute favourite action game things. Tense, decisive duels. Violence that's both brutal and a little silly. Scalpel-sharp parry n' strike back-and-forths. Short stages that dole out chunky progression hits of dopamine, as quickly as they wrest those hits away from you with another humbling beatdown. Perhaps most importantly, it aims to do one thing - rhythm combat - and does it brilliantly. It's got teeth, but it's also got groove. |

Bandai Namco not only announced a new Elden Ring sales milestone, but it also revealed a new trailer to help people catch up with the game ahead of Shadow of the Erdtree. As of June 2024, 25 million people worldwide bought the game.
First, here's the Elden Ring sales milestone announcement. As a reminder, the last update came in February 2023. At that point, the game was at 20 million copies sold. So it took about a year and four months to sell an additional 5 million.
Next, here's the new Elden Ring "The Journey so Far" trailer. It acts as a reminder of what to expect from this FromSoftware Soulslike and goes over the backstory for the main adventure.
While this Elden Ring trailer is more focused on things we'd seen leading up to the add-on, there was another one that pertained to new content recently as well. The story trailer for the expansion appeared at the end of May 2024. It suggested what new tidbits of lore we'll encounter.
Ahead of Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, we've also seen a number of other related items. For example, an Erdtree's Favor necklace is on the way. Ahead of the 2.3 Honkai: Star Rail update, a new Keeping Up with Star Rail gameplay video focused on highlighting all of the moves Firefly can use in battle. This time, Owlbert and Welt explained everything we can expect from the new five-star Fire Destruction unit.
Editor's Note: There will be spoilers for the 2.0 Penacony Honkai: Star Rail storyline and Firefly in the Keeping Up with Star Rail gameplay video and article before.
As confirmed by the events in Penacony and the latest story trailer, Firefly is actually the Stellaron Hunter SAM. SAM is a suit she wears when in combat. This transformation is shown in-game. When walking around areas, people will see Firefly. In-battle, she'll fight inside the SAM suit.
The video begins by showing the Skill Order: Aerial Bombardment. Firefly sacrifices health to increase energy, advance her next action, and deal damage to one enemy. So she gets a buff and attacks. Her Chrysalid Pyronexus Talent makes her take less damage when her HP is lower, can cause regeneration, and removes debuffs when health is restored. The Ultimate Fyrefly Type-IV: Complete Combustion sends her into Complete Combustion mode. This lets her attack again and enhances her attack and skill. Her basic attack deals more damage and heals her. The Enhanced Skill applies Fire weakness to all enemies, restores her health, while dealing Fire damage to one enemy and those adjacent to it.
Here's the full gameplay video showing Firefly and SAM in Honkai: Star Rail.
Firefly's signature Light Cone was also revealed. It is called Metamorphosis, and any Destruction character can use it. In addition to increasing the Break Effect of its wearer by 60%, it also causes a Routed debuff to be applied to attacked enemies to increase the amount of break damage they take and decrease their speed. It is only available in limited-time banners.
Honkai: Star Rail is available on the PS5, PC, and mobile devices, and Firefly (and SAM) will be playable in the 2.3 update on June 19, 2024.

The Erdtree's Favor talisman from Elden Ring will soon be a real item you can wear, courtesy of Torch Torch. The talisman is available to pre-order from their store now and is set for release in September 2024.
The real-life talisman is a faithful recreation of the Erdtree's Favor as it appears in-game. FromSoftware aided in the production of the item, which was sculpted by Masato Ohata. It's made from sterling silver and features brass plating for a fake gold effect. The pendant is 4cm (1.6 inches) in height, with a 54cm (21.3 inches) chain. It's available to pre-order for ¥22,000 (roughly US$140).
The Erdtree's Favor is found in three locations in Elden Ring, with each one being more powerful than the last. It provides a boost to your HP, Stamina and Equip Load, starting at 3%, 6% and 5% respectively. It is unlikely that the item from Torch Torch will provide the same benefits in real life.
This is not the first Elden Ring merch produced by Torch Torch. They previously released a line of shirts and bags featuring Starscourge Radahn and Blaidd the half-wolf. They have also produced merch for other FromSoftware games such as Dark Souls and Bloodborne.
The Erdtree's Favor talisman is now available to pre-order from the Torch Torch online store. It will release in September 2024.

Capcom's continuing to trickle out details about Street Fighter 6, with the latest reveal being the M Bison Vega theme song. It is called "Undying Desire," and it can be found on social media and YouTube.
Here's the full M Bison Street Fighter 6 theme song used for his new Vega persona. It doesn't include any gameplay footage. We just get to see art of the character's new look while the almost three minute long song plays.
M Bison's return was revealed during Summer Game Fest 2024. He'll show up alongside Elena and SNK mainstays Terry Bogard and Mai Shiranui. He's the first DLC in the Year 2 Character Pass, set to appear on June 26, 2024. Immediately after that reveal, the first gameplay trailer for him appeared. It started by showing him in his new Vega person, seemingly suffering from amnesia after events of the last game. From there, we got to see him fight against Juri. While we do get a good idea of what his kit will look like in the game, Capcom hasn't officially revealed his moveset yet.
Street Fighter 6 is available on the PS4, PS5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X. M Bison debuts on June 26, 2024.

Fitness Boxing feat Hatsune Miku is going to be available for exercise "classes" worldwide, with Aksys confirming it is responsible for the English release outside Japan. People will see it on the Switch in more regions in Fall 2024.
This latest entry in the Fitness Boxing series has already been available in Japan for quite a while. It debuted in the region back in March 2024. People get to work out alongside Hatsune Miku and other Vocaloids like Megurine Luka and Kagamine Rin and Len. Though for those familiar with past games Evan and Lin also return. When people go through the various punches and moves, which are sensed by holding a Switch Joy-Con in each hand, you'll have the option of using Vocaloid songs as background music.
Here's the first Fitness Boxing feat Hatsune Miku English teaser trailer. It is incredibly brief and just shows Miku in her standard costume punching. In-game, all four Vocaloids will be wear workout clothing in addition to their classic outfits.
This is the second Fitness Boxing crossover to show up in recent years. Fitness Boxing: Fist of the North Star ended up appearing worldwide too. As you can imagine, it mean working out with characters from the anime.
Fitness Boxing feat Hatsune Miku is available on the Nintendo Switch in Japan and will head to other regions in Fall 2024.

Capcom announced a pair of house slippers inspired by the Khezu from the Monster Hunter series, and they are set to release in Japan sometime in October 2024. The slippers cost 2,970 yen (or approximately $18.88) and are currently available for pre-order from the e-Capcom Japanese online store. [Thanks, Inside Games!]
This particular pair of house slippers are designed to look like the popular Khezu monster is eating the feet of the person wearing them. The inside of the slippers is made to look like the tongue and the mouth of a Khezu, while their outside looks like a Khezu, with rows of teeth-shaped motifs lining the heel area of the slippers and the top part covering the feet.
You can take a better look at the house slippers inspired by the Khezu from the Monster Hunter series here:
As a reminder, back in late March 2024 Capcom announced the release of a realistic Monster Hunter figure of a Khezu, set to appear in Japan on October 17, 2024. Furthermore, a collection of Monster Hunter chibi style plushies announced in August 2023 includes a Khezu, as well as a Felyne, a Mizutsune, and a Rajang.

Atlus games are the heartbeat of my love for gaming, be it Persona or Shin Megami Tensei. However, the original Shin Megami Tensei V severely disappointed me in terms of its empty world, forgettable characters, bland storyline, and lackluster performance. Fortunately, Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance is the true definitive version, addressing all of my concerns and then some.
In some aspects, Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance is akin to what Apocalypse is to SMT IV, as it is a better game with a stronger story in the same world, but also unique at the same time. For the most part, Vengeance is the game this JRPG should have been from the start. I will go ahead and say it right now. Outside of 100% completing the JRPG, there is no reason to go back to the original Canon of Creation storyline.
The new Canon of Vengeance path feels much better in every single aspect. The start of the story is pretty much identical to the original plot, but with some neat twists. For one, you get new characters like Yoko who accompany the player from pretty early in the story. This is one of the best changes in Vengeance, as the game feels much more alive with frequent character development. Most of the plot has at least one, if not two, other people journeying alongside the Nahobino. They can even optionally fight alongside you in battle, Persona-style, if you so choose, but they don't have to.
Comments and interjections from party members like Yoko on the main plot points, developments, and even side quests are a welcome addition. They feel so natural, such as musing over whether or not I should've helped out a particular demon in a side quest. This makes replaying the almost identical first half of this JRPG so much more vibrant and thrilling. It didn't feel like trudging through this barren open wasteland without much purpose. I wanted to keep going to see how the story would change or what Yoko and others had to say about my choices.
Without delving into spoilers too much, the plot of Canon of Vengeance is solid from start to somewhat awkward finish. The highlight of the original SMT V for me was the first dozen hours or so. Adventuring through the initial Da'at area felt exciting and mysterious in the original, plus the more horror-like high school dungeon section afterward felt like the peak part of the story. Fortunately, Canon of Vengeance takes the best parts of the cast from that initial dozen hours I loved and included it throughout the rest of the game. You spend so much more time with all of the cast members in the main story. This even sometimes happens through limited-time side quests that flesh them out more.
SMT V: Vengeance completely changed my perspective on certain characters. I won't spoil things here. However, I went from disliking them in the original to now loving them. There are even some characters I still hate, but with an even more burning passion than before because they had the proper time to develop their motivations better and earn that ire.
Even better yet, there is a brand new area exclusive to Canon of Vengeance. Fortunately, it is also the best open-world area to explore as well. Players can now visit Shinjuku in Da'at. This area is absolutely massive. You start out in the gorgeous, purple-themed Shibuya, and you literally travel from that ward all the way to Shinjuku. The area is a refreshing break from the other areas. It is so detailed and just keeps going. In fact, it trades out the Chiyoda map in this story path, which I felt was by far the most annoying area in the original, so that made me happy as well.
The only real downside to the Canon of Vengeance storyline is the ending. There are two new endings to unlock in this game, and they felt a bit lackluster to me. They didn't necessarily move the needle as much as I would have liked, especially with everything else this version changes.
When it comes to the gameplay, though, we see the classic turn-based Press Turn system at work with some minor, but helpful, improvements. You pick to attack, use skills that cost MP, defend, and so on each turn. These tactical battles are just as challenging, freeform, and stylish as before. That said, there are a lot more ultimate Magatsuhi Skills to unlock and use in battle, and you'll want them, too. After all, the new Canon of Vengeance storyline felt much more challenging than the base game with its new bosses.
There is an early boss, for instance, who has a weakness to physical, but nullifies basically everything else. You would think this would make for a swift and breezy fight then, right? Just mash away the attack button or use physical skills and you'll gain extra turns, so it sounds pretty easy. Well, the boss makes up for its weakness with unbelievably powerful attacks and various status effects. These skills nearly obliterated my early party on the Normal difficulty. This continues through the rest of the game with each boss truly forcing the player to reevaluate their team and make use of the Essences to change resistances, skills, and the like.
Playing this game on the PS5 meant the battles were much smoother and swifter than ever before as well. The frame rate was steady no matter what I was doing, including exploration. Speaking of which, the exploration felt much more engaging. This is especially true with the neat quality-of-life features like new open-world shortcuts you can find and unlock.
This made me want to uncover every inch of each open map area and find every secret. I actually wanted to do every side quest as well, especially the new ones. Most of the newer optional content has quick, witty, and intriguing storylines worth checking out. There is one recurring side quest storyline following the Hare of Inaba wanting to stronger, which I adored. There are even more experimental quests where you can briefly take on the role of demons. One of my favorites was this puzzling and comedic whodunnit case.
In general, the demons have much more fascinating personalities than ever before. This is seen through the side quests and the new Demon Haunt area. This new location lets players interact with demons, give them gifts, and receive gifts in return. It almost feels like a very light bond system with the demons and other party members. This all added a nice touch. Even some of the previous DLC from the base game feels more naturally integrated into the world. This even includes the beloved Return of the True Demon side quest.
In the end, Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance accomplished exactly what I hoped for. It took the messy base game, made it look and play better, and expanded upon every single aspect. This results in a polished and finally complete experience worth (re)visiting. Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance reaches its full potential in almost every way possible and now confidently stands toe-to-toe with its predecessors.
Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance releases for Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on June 14, 2024.
