According to some players, Final Fantasy 14's new Dawntrail expansion has a story problem. It's boring, plot points aren't explained properly, and it is by and large unimportant, or so go the criticisms. Of course, what those complaints don't tell you is that a lot of the people behind them are also skipping through…

The First Descendant Steam reviews struggle after success of launch

It's been a bit of an eventual first day for The First Descendant. The free shooter launched earlier with a colossal number of players diving in, but there's been a sting in the tail for the title. Players aren't entirely happy with what they're finding once they're in-game with Steam reviews reflecting that dissatisfaction - currently hovering just above the "Mostly Negative" classification.

WoW will soon stop you from restoring deleted characters

As someone who was around during the early days of World of Warcraft, it's constantly surprising the amount of stuff that players can do themselves in terms of services. If we deleted an item or character back in the day, we would have to ticket a Game Master in order to get things back. These days it's a much slicker affair, with web-based tools letting players press a few buttons to reformulate things from the void. That is, until now - as soon Blizzard will be temporarily turning off the character restoration service.

Xbox Design Lab Gets FFXIV Dawntrail Controller Recipes

Square Enix announced two Xbox Design Lab controller recipes for items based on the FFXIV Dawntrail Pictomancer and Viper job classes. The Pictomancer one is a standard model controller that costs $79.98, due to it using the Dream Vapor body that is $9.99 more, while the Viper is a $149.99 Elite model.

As these are recipes, they can be adjusted further. The defaults shared by Square Enix are Xbox Design Lab controller designs based on the official art for the Pictomancer and Viper and their color schemes in FFXIV Dawntrail. The Pictomancer uses the Dream Vapor body, Robot White back, Astral Purple bumpers, Glacier Blue triggers, Retro Pink d-pad, Glacier Blue thumbsticks, Grey on White ABXY buttons, and Black on White view, menu, and share buttons.  The Viper recipe uses a Garnet Red body and back, Bright Silver Metallic bumpers and triggers, the Bright Silver Metal cross d-pad, a Bright Silver Metal thumbstick base with Nocturnal Green topper, Nocturnal Green ABXY buttons, and Ash Gray view, menu, and share buttons.

It isn't uncommon for Microsoft to offer these sorts of presets alongside the launches of certain games. For example, The First Descendant is out now, and it has its own recipe. There was also a specific one for Elden Ring and its Shadow of the Erdtree DLC.

Final Fantasy XIV and the Dawntrail expansion are available now for the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC. The Xbox Design Lab controllers can be used with the Xbox Series X or PC versions of FFXIV

FFXIV Dawntrail Ad Features Cat Cosplay

Part of Square Enix's ad campaign for FFXIV Dawntrail involved the "Turalism" internal campaign, but now the company revealed Cat Cosplay is also involved. To celebrate the official launch, the company commissioned a video of a cat dressed as a Viper Warrior of Light.

Here's the full video. It includes a mixture of Viper gameplay footage from FFXIV Dawntrail, as well as a video of the cat wearing the matching WOL cosplay.

https://twitter.com/Cat_Cosplay/status/1808147180148113789

The official launch trailer for FFXIV Dawntrail actually appeared quite a bit ago. It showed up during the Letter from the Producer Live LXXXII. That was an over four-minute video setting the stage for the trip to the new continent. While it did go over a bit of story content and explaining why we head to the new area, it also involved FFXIV gameplay of new jobs like the Viper and Pictomancer.

In case you missed it, here's how that looked:

This FFXIV Dawntrail ad also isn't the only time Square Enix involved animal cosplay to promote a Final Fantasy game. In June 2023, it held a Paws of Valisthea for FFXVI  in Australia. That involved dressing dogs up as Eikons from the game.

Final Fantasy XIV and its Dawntrail expansion are available for the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC.

Kirby and Waddle Dee tumblers

Takarajima revealed new tumblers modeled after Kirby and Waddle Dee from the Kirby video game series. The company will release these glasses in July 2024 with a price tag of 2,992 yen (~$19).

These tumblers will be around 11.3 cm (4.45 in) tall with a top side diameter of 8 cm (3.15 in). The company will make them with vacuum insulation, so they can retain the drink's temperature—both hot and cold—for a longer time than ordinary mugs.

Takarajima claimed that under a room temperature of 20°C (68°F), the tumbler can retain 3°C (37.4°F) water with ice blocks for six hours. In another test case with 200mL of 96°C (204.8°F) hot water, it can stay above 40°C (104°F) for about an hour.

The tumblers will start appearing at most FamilyMart outlets across Japan on July 11, 2024. However, Takarajima also opened pre-orders for both items on its own web store. The site has a WorldShopping widget that also supports these items, so people residing outside Japan can also place orders for these items at around $18.56 apiece.

Kirby and Waddle Dee are two of the most popular characters from the Kirby game series, and they have also been featured together in other merchandise lineups. In late June 2024, iFace released iPhone cases and accessories based on both characters exclusively in Japan.

The new Kirby and Waddle Dee tumblers will be available on July 11, 2024.

Hello Kitty Tamagotchi Nano Gives Characters Brushes With Fame

As part of the Hello Kitty anniversary celebrations, Bandai Namco refreshed the Tamagotchi Nano model that debuted in 2020. The concept is still the same and it is still $19.99 as usual, though there's a new apple minigame and different forms of characters to collect. But one thing remains: I am desperately seeking Hello Kitty's approval.

As this is a Tamagotchi Nano, the general pet raising process remains streamlined. You go straight from the baby form to an adult, depending on the level of care. You can't actually check stats to see how happy or unhappy, as well as how full or hungry, the character is. You need to listen for alerts to see if they are sulking or left some poop. However, as is common for these crossover models, it brings in a character from another series into the spotlight. While some involve directly raising those people or animals, this involves standard Tamagotchi characters and Hello Kitty making cameo appearances.

The baby form even looks like a little apple!

Basically, it ends up like Hello Kitty is perhaps helping you raise the Tamagotchi with this Tamagotchi Nano variant. You're feeding it Hello Kitty's favorite foods, which are apple pie and milk. How do you think you got that? Hm? When you play minigames like the one with the piano, she's playing for or with you. If you take poor care of it, Hello Kitty mourns its passing.

She's a very involved virtual friend, clearly.

At the same time, I also felt like I was trying to earn the approval of Hello Kitty as I raised characters in the Hello Kitty Tamagotchi Nano. She will work with her mouse friend Joey to help clean up poop on-screen. In the apple catching minigame, we're basically collecting the fruit for her. If we do a good job, she's happy. A bad job? She's sad. The additional evolution for the adult forms involves Hello Kitty basically giving the character a bow. Even the "good" ending of a run with a character involves them going off with Hello Kitty. Like she thought we did such a good job raising the character, she deems them worthy of traveling together.

I honestly felt like as I was playing with the Hello Kitty Tamagotchi Nano, I was attempting to please Hello Kitty and make her proud. It isn't like the Chopper one, where I'm playing with a friend, or the Anya one that left me left me wanting to play dress-up. I definitely felt like I needed to achieve and earn that Hello Kitty bow. Maybe it resulted in a little more pressure on my part, but it was still quite fun.

The Hello Kitty Tamagotchi Nano will release on July 9, 2024
