PCGamesN Thursday, September 12, 2024 3:58 PM Change is a difficult thing to grapple with. We have a tendency as humans to ascribe morality to change, labeling it 'good' or 'bad' depending on our feelings, but the truth is that generally it's simply neutral. It can be difficult to let go of things or embrace the tumultuousness that comes with something turning into something else, and that's definitely the case when a beloved thing is altered. In Diablo 4, that feeling is hitting fans, and for good reason. PCGamesN Thursday, September 12, 2024 3:41 PM Thanks to a recent — and apparently pretty disappointing — movie, Borderlands has been on many people's minds lately. While Borderlands 3 and its spin-off, Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, are out and Borderlands 4 is currently in the works, there are still other options available for those looking for a take on the kind of cartoon setting and first-person shooting the well known series offers. One of the best of these is Gunfire Reborn, a co-op roguelike FPS that launched back in 2021, which is now experiencing a massive player resurgence on Steam thanks to a new DLC and discount. PCGamesN Thursday, September 12, 2024 2:26 PM Back in 1982, Atari launched a shooter called Yars' Revenge. In the decades that followed, the game received a reboot and remake, but it took until this year for a full sequel to come out. Rather than return to the same genre as its predecessor, this sequel, Yars Rising, looks to the design elements of Metroidvania games like Hollow Knight, Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, and Blasphemous for new inspiration. The result is a reinvention helmed by Shantae and the Seven Sirens creator WayForward that's just launched on Steam. PCGamesN Thursday, September 12, 2024 1:40 PM You can't accuse Total War: Pharaoh studio Creative Assembly of failing to work hard to improve the game. After a rocky launch last year saw the latest in the series stumble out of the gate, the team responsible for it has continued to give the game plenty of attention, issuing huge updates that expand and drastically overhaul nearly every feature. This effort doesn't seem to be slowing down. Today, Pharaoh received yet another big update geared toward further building upon the successful launch of its Dynasties DLC, the result of which hopes to move the game ever nearer to the beloved status of past series entries like Total War: Rome 2, Total War: Shogun 2, and Total War: Warhammer 3. Yet, despite its distinctive 'gaslamp fantasy' world, the new survival game struggled to maintain an audience in a busy year packed with the likes of Palworld, Enshrouded, Soulmask, and Once Human. It's a neat improvement over the old system. Unfortunately I can't think about anything other than the Steam Families logo, which is pictured above and is clearly a shocked, possibly aghast face. Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, September 12, 2024 12:35 PM There are many reasons to play and write about Arco. The Mesoamerican pixelart landscapes, for example - radiant, cloud-hung platters of land with people and buildings reduced to daubs of paint in the foreground. The fact that it's about witnessing and surviving colonial invasion, rather than the more familiar European or North American video game fantasy of searching a New World for plunder. The ensemble storytelling, with four, successively playable characters setting their own lenses to thickly entangled themes of sorrow, vengeance and growing understanding. The sparse, expressive dialogue, each phrase carefully tucked inside its speech bubble. The music. And the little things at the level of how you move, what you do. When you pick a faraway destination on your map, your character makes the journey screen by screen, which gives you a second to lean back and be a passenger, watching the horizon, at least until you're ambushed by a giant beetle. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, September 12, 2024 11:58 AM Oh, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl. Mere weeks from release after years of delays, plopped in front of me at a cramped, lightly vibrating Gamescom booth, and you still won't reveal your secrets. I did get to play a brief whizz through GSC Game World's eerie FPS – enough to feel encouraged, even – but be it time constraints or the darkness of my nighttime raid into the radioactive Zone, I would have liked to have quite literally seen more. Then again, keeping the mystery intact may have been the point all along. "As a game director, I want to hide everything from the player", GSC's CEO Ievgen Grygorovych had told me minutes earlier. "I'm fighting with the marketing team because they want to show as much as possible!" |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, September 12, 2024 11:00 AM If roller coasters are humanity's way of injecting ourselves with a dose of fear just to stay on our toes, then water parks are our way of turning our old enemy, the sea, into a captive entertainer (or is that aquariums?) Either way, Frontier are hoping to cater for all humankind's quirky day-out desires with Planet Coaster 2, by adding water slides and wave pools to the teacups and train rides of their management sim. I had a short go on it, and while there's no chance two hours of hands-on time could give me a full impression of the building game's suite of creative tools, I was quietly pleased with the jungle-themed pool I nestled into the earth. And with the little shark mascot I hired to patrol it. |

The horror nous required to impart unease in the middle of the day are somewhat eased up on when you've got all that serotonin-begone drizzle to work with, sure. But this feels more poignant than that. There's a soulful drearines and utterly heartbreaking inevitability to the vibe here, as your character and rubber suited activist pals try to get the bottom of a horrific incident. It's got best British indie horror film of the year written all over it. |

This is the same Microsoft that parted with around 1900 employees in January, and the same Microsoft that washed their hands of around 10,000 staff in January 2023, all in the name of shoring up the business for future prosperity. I imagine I am far from the only person whose earliest memories in gaming are of traversing levels in the original Super Mario Bros., followed by full 3D exploration in Super Mario 64. Outside of the occasional Nintendo title, no game captures that pure fun gaming experience these days until now with Astro Bot.
There have been a couple of Astro Bot games up until now, including in VR and the PS5 pack-in title with Astro's Playroom, but they never quite provided the scale and experience of this title. In many ways, this is the Super Mario World to Astro Bot: Rescue Mission's Super Mario Bros. for PlayStation.
You can absolutely pick up this title without experiencing the other games and have a wonderful time. Astro's goal in this title is to rescue all of his bot friends across more than 50 planets in six different galaxies to explore. You do this by platforming, jumping, running, and swinging around each planetary level, complete with its own enemies, challenges, gimmicks, and style.
Without spoiling every surprise this game has to offer, one mission might have players use the power of slow motion. They do this through a casino where you can slow down certain moving parts to reach the next platform. This power adds an intriguing layer of skill and challenge beyond the usual platforming antics.
And then in another level, you might be underwater for the duration a la Jolly Roger Bay. This changes up the pace and style of movement, and puts a bit more focus on exploration. Even beyond that, there are levels involving giant sponge Astro, the highly creative elephant ability in Trunk of Funk, and switching between day and night.
Admittedly, there is an intense level of linearity in most of these worlds. While it brings back the fun of Super Mario 64, it isn't quite as open. In fact, I would liken this game more to the Super Mario 3D World side. There are the occasional slightly more open areas, but it is pretty straightforward.
You might have some branching paths occasionally but openness is a second thought. Thankfully, this isn't as huge of a problem since each level feels so lovingly crafted. It helps that no level or gimmick overstays its welcome, either. The pacing is fantastic, as the player is constantly moving from world to world.
In addition, there are levels of varying sizes. There are the larger set-pieces like Slow-Mo Casino with numerous bots to rescue. But then you might turn around and do a challenge level, which takes a minute or two at most to complete. Astro Bot keeps players on their toes the entire time you are playing through it.
But the single greatest aspect of this title is how it affectionately pays tribute to PlayStation's history. Astro's Playroom toyed with the idea of crossover cameos but Astro Bot takes it to a new level. There are more than 160 different cameo bots to find throughout the galaxies.
These range from characters from first-party games like God of War to unexpected third-party surprises I won't dare spoil here. This game pays homage to every previous PlayStation console and iconic characters in a way that feels so similar to what Nintendo did with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Beautiful moments like finding Joker from Persona 5 in the Slow-Mo Casino will stick out in my head for a long time. Team Asobi knows the PlayStation audience so well and proved that with these meaningful — not throwaway — cameos. This adds to the impressive level of polish this game has with how it runs.
Though I would prefer more open levels in the future, Astro Bot cements itself as PlayStation's premier platforming series. This game solely brings back the golden era of PlayStation platformers like Crash Bandicoot and Spyro. The sheer number of brilliant cameos show the right mix of nostalgia amidst expertly-crafted level design. If you're looking for the purest form of video game fun but with modern mechanics, this is it.
Astro Bot is available right now exclusively for PS5.

Ayase of Yoasobi posted a short story that Nisio Isin, the author of the Bakemonogatari series, wrote for him. The short story is "Yotsugi Song," and the story features Yotsugi asking Koyomi to form a band with her.
Yotsugi Song is only in Japanese and you'll have to zoom into the picture to read it. It starts with Yotsugi busting into Koyomi's room with various instruments, asking him if he wants to form a band with her. In a meta joke, they discuss the fact that Yotsugi's on the cover of the Yoasobi single "Undead." To make up for it, Yotsugi lets Koyomi be the guitar while she's in charge of both drums and vocals. It ends with Koyomi asking her for a left handed guitar and she tells him to quit with his hero worship of left handed people.
In Ayase's Tweet, he states that the gift from Nisio Isin is an unbelievable treasure, as he's a huge fan of Bakemonogatari and the other entries in the series. He then goes on to state that "Music is undead," or that music will never die. This is a reference to "Undead," which is the theme for the Off & Monster Season of the Monogatari anime. Yotsugi is the character on the cover of the single as well.
In the press release for "Undead," Ayase stated that he always says Bakemonogatari is his favorite anime because of his strong attachment to the Monogatari series. In his late teens, he even wrote a song about Hitagi Senjougahara, the heroine of Monogatari. Monogatari is a series of light novels and anime that follow Koyomi Araragi, a high school student who briefly became a vampire during spring break. Due to his experience and connections with the supernatural, he helps various girls around town and school who have been afflicted with oddities.

From September 13 to 18, 2024, you might be able to catch a deermobile that's driving around Japan to promote My Deer Friend Nokotan. The truck will run from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM throughout Shinjuku, Shibuya, and Ikebukuro.
Here's the schedule for when you can catch the Nokotan deermobile:
The name of the car in Japan is shicar. "Car" in Japanese does not have the hard R sound, which makes it sound like "ka." The word for "deer" in Japanese is "shika," so the pronunciation is closer to "shikaa." As for the design of the car, it's a truck that has a realistic-looking deer on one side and Nokotan on the other. Between "Club Deer" and the glittery aesthetic, it seems to be riffing off advertisements for host clubs.
My Deer Friend Nokotan is a comedy slice-of-life anime and manga series that follows Torako Koshi (Koshitan), a former delinquent who puts on an honor student persona. The appearance of Noko Shikanoko, a Sika deer in human form, ruins her perfect image, as she has to help the ridiculous Noko navigate human life. Even those who don't watch or read Nokotan likely know it, as its opening went viral prior to the anime's debut.
The My Deer Friend Nokotan truck will be driving around Shinjuku, Shibuya, and Ikebukuro from September 13 to September 18, 2024 to promote the final episode of the season. You can watch My Deer Friend Nokotan on Crunchyroll.

In any medium, a remake is a tricky choice. You don't want to alienate old fans by changing everything completely, but you want new fans to enjoy modern amenities. I think Capcom have perfected the art with their many remakes in the Resident Evil franchise.
These games have laid out the template and set the gold standard going forward for video game remakes. Capcom achieved the rare feat of both revitalizing their classic titles while still moving their games forward. Also, the remakes have brought an entire franchise, once spread across generations, all onto the same platform.
These remakes aren't just nostalgic revisits; they are high-quality reimaginings that cater to both seasoned fans and newcomers alike. A huge part of this lies in their ability to blend the tone and gameplay of modern Resident Evil entries with the spirit of the originals. This is something I feel many remakes fail to do. They either try to much to recapture the original experience or they go too far in modernizing everything.
Titles like the Resident Evil 2 remake retain the core horror elements and characters that fans love. However, they introduce fresh mechanics, revamped visuals, and improved gameplay that align with more recent releases. In this way, Capcom has created a bridge between the old and the new. They're crafting remakes that feel both like historical preservation and an evolution of their games moving forward.
Of course it helps that Resident Evil games had infamously aged poorly to modern gamers. Early Resident Evil titles had some less popular gameplay element such as tank controls, fixed camera angles, and visuals constrained by the hardware. Which can be a turn-off to more modern audiences. The remakes remove these barriers, replacing them with fluid third-person gameplay, more detailed environments, and more dynamic combat systems. This has lead to many people who missed out on the originals to finally go back and pick up those pieces of the story.
One significant outcome of this remake strategy is how it smooths the transition between older and newer titles. For a new player, starting with the 1996 original and working their way to the most recent entries would result in a jarring shift in quality and mechanics. However, with the remakes, players can now play everything in order without feeling like they're stepping back in time. Their consistent quality prevents players from experiencing a massive drop in design or technical fidelity from game to game.
In some ways, Capcom's handling of the Resident Evil remakes is kind of like Taylor Swift's approach to re-recording her discography. Fixing a few things that need fixing, updating things with newer technology, but preserving the core experience. They invite a new generation into their respective worlds without sacrificing what made the originals beloved. Although, some fans will of course disagree as some fans often do.
The Resident Evil remakes should be used as a blueprint for other game developers looking to breathe new life into their classic titles. We've already seen how this strategy can work in other contexts, such as the critically acclaimed Dead Space remake. Much like Resident Evil, Dead Space took a beloved original and rebuilt it with a few new ideas. However, they preserved the essence of what made it a classic. The success of these remakes demonstrates that, when done right, a remake can do more than just bring back an old game—it can actually move your series forward.
Capcom has proven that revisiting a classic with fresh eyes and a modern touch doesn't mean compromising on the soul of the original. The Resident Evil remakes are more than just nostalgia trips; they are masterclasses in how to balance innovation with tradition. Honestly, I'm sure we're going to see more companies follow this "remake your whole franchise" model. And if they do it well, I welcome it.
Ultimately, the Resident Evil remakes have set the bar. Not just in survival horror but in the broader realm of video game remakes. They are a testament to the power of reinvention, showing that it's possible to honor the past while embracing the future. Capcom has set a template for the gaming industry that others should follow, proving that with the right approach, a remake can serve as both a celebration of gaming history and a new benchmark for modern design.
