God Of War Ragnarök was one of 2022's hit games on PS5 and PS4, and by all accounts it looks great and plays well on PC, where it arrived via Valve's storefront earlier this week.      Cyberpunk rhythm JRPG Keylocker is out now, inspired by Chrono Trigger

Music is an art form that never sits still and never occurs in isolation. Every tune you ever hear is the sum of a weight of influences, both current and historical, behind it. Music flows through people, leaving inspiration behind. Which is why it's appropriate that Keylocker, a rhythm JRPG all about music, is such a melting pot of different influences. Chrono Trigger, the Mario and Luigi RPG series, Guitar Hero, and much more is all present in this game's DNA - and it's out now on Steam.

New Star Citizen engineering system will turn the space MMO into FTL

There's a scene in a Star Trek Deep Space 9 episode where the Defiant's computer is disabled. As a result, all the crew has to do things manually, involving lots of yelling of orders with everyone focused on the task in front of them with no computers helping. It makes you feel like you're watching a sci-fi version of Master and Commander, and the next big update for Star Citizen may do just the same thing.

It's strange that parkour hasn't been more of a thing in gaming. Of course there's almost no FPS games that don't feature mantling of some sort, but in terms of free running itself there's only really Mirror's Edge, Dying Light, and a few others that raise the flag for first person jumping. fate/grand order tea

Kyoto Rikyuen will release a second line of Fate/Grand Order tea blends. This time, it'll feature Merlin, Nero Claudius, and Taigong Wang.

The teas will be available via the Kyoto Rikyu-en website until October 20, 2024. People who bought them can expect to see the teas some time near the end of December 2024. The timing of the teas makes it perfect for a late Christmas present for a loved one, friend, or even yourself. When you purchase a box of tea, you also get an original paper sleeve and acrylic stand.

Each Fate/Grand Order tea box costs 7700 JPY ($53.50) and you get two blends with it. One is the basic dark hojicha that Kyoto Rikyu-en is known for. The other one is a special blend that draws inspiration from the character in question. The Merlin blend's name can translate to "Dream of Flowers," and it combines white sencha with the fragrance of grapes and edible flowers. As for the Taigong Wang tea, it's based on the xiantao (peach of immortality) from Chinese mythology. It's a peach-flavored pu'er tea. Finally, the Emperor of Roses tea for Nero is a Japanese black tea with the fragrance of roses.

Previously, when Kyoto Rikyu-en last had a collaboration with Lasengle, it featured the Servants Douman, Katsushika Hokusai, and Morgan. Those teas were also open for pre-order from September to October, with a release window of December. It's possible that this will become a yearly tradition with Kyoto Rikyu-en.

Fate/Grand Order is readily available on mobile devices.

ffxvi ps5 issues

Sony Interactive Entertainment has released a system update for the PS5 version of Final Fantasy XVI (FFXVI) to fix issues. The official Final Fantasy XVI X (formerly known as Twitter) account asks players to download and install the update to see if it makes things better.

After the PC port of FFXVI came out, along with a new update, PS5 players have been encountering crashes and graphical issues. It seems that the update destabilized something within the game's code. The FFXVI X account notes in a follow-up post that Square Enix is still investigating the cause of these glitches in collaboration with Sony Interactive Entertainment. As a note, the PC port is also encountering issues such as low FPS and performance bugs.

Final Fantasy XVI initially came out in 2023 as a PS5 exclusive. It sold over three million copies during its first week, though it didn't reach Square Enix's expectations for the game.  The PC version of the game came out on September 17, 2024. As for the story, you play as protagonist Clive Rosfield as he journeys through Valisthea in order to take revenge on Ifrit, an Eikon who killed his brother Joshua when they were children.

Final Fantasy XVI is readily available on the PS5 and Windows PC. A new update for Final Fantasy XVI is available for the PS5 version of the game.

When it comes to picking a Nintendo Switch to buy today, it can be a bit confusing and overwhelming with all the different models. There's the OLED, original Switch, updated Switch model, and Lite. And those aren't even including the different color variations and bundles. But to simplify for you, here is the best Nintendo Switch model you should buy.

Mario Red Nintendo OLED Switch Model Announced Release Date
Image via Nintendo

Best Overall Nintendo Switch Model: OLED

The overall best Nintendo Switch model is the OLED version. This is essentially the standard for the Nintendo Switch these days. It has a slightly larger screen, with the most up-to-date performance, and above all else, that gorgeous OLED screen. It is no secret that the Switch is behind its console competitors in terms of visuals.

However, there is a significant difference when using the OLED model. Even games with lower resolutions and less detailed graphics look impressively better with this screen. Though most of these differences are only noticeable in handheld mode, this is the way to go for new Switch owners these days until its successor releases.

Image via Nintendo

Honorable Mention: Switch Lite

While the OLED model is the best overall Switch version, it is a bit pricey. If you don't happen to have the cash to shell out for that one, the honorable mention and runner-up in my opinion is the Switch Lite. This device is handheld-only, but if you like playing in portable mode most of the time, this is the one for you.

The Switch Lite has excellent form factor, being adorably smaller than the other versions. It is compact, comes in some cute colors I wish the regular Switch had, and can still play almost every game in the library. While you sacrifice TV mode and removable Joy-Cons, the Switch Lite is a highly recommended budget console version these days.

fate/samurai remnant soundtrack

The Fate/Samurai Remnant soundtrack will appear on streaming sites from September 26, 2024. The physical version of the CDs came out in March 2024. [Thanks, KaroshiMyriad!]

In total, there are 89 tracks over the course of four disks. This includes the full version of "Zanya Gensou feat. LICCA," which serves as the main theme song for the game. When people purchase the physical version of the OST, they also receive a serial code that'll let them download the five DLC tracks. The streamed versions will also include those DLC tracks.

Here is a video from earlier this year that gives a sample of the soundtrack:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bxOcZwZJrW4

Fate/Samurai Remnant came out in late September 2023 and featured an original story. In it, you play as Miyamoto Iori, who finds himself wrapped up in the Waxing Moon Ritual, which is a derivative of the Holy Grail War. He, along with his Servant Saber, fight not only to win, but also to prevent casualties that occur as a result of the war. The game was a hack 'n' slash as a result of Koei Tecmo working on it, though it also had open-world exploration elements.

Fate/Samurai Remnant is readily available on the PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, and Windows PC. The soundtrack for Fate/Samurai Remnant will appear on streaming sites and services from September 26, 2024.

star rail moze

When Honkai: Star Rail 2.5 dropped, I had some guesses as to how it was going to go. For starters, I figured the same thing that happened with Aventurine would happen with Jiaoqiu and I was right. Tons of people I knew didn't care about Jiaoqiu came out of the story wishing they'd pulled on his banner. But what I didn't expect was for me to end the patch with my heart full of love for that loser, Moze. Moze in Honkai: Star Rail is the man I didn't think I would like and yet I was willing to risk it all on the banners for a 4-star character.

In retrospect, it might not be a surprise. For one thing, I already liked Jiaoqiu so the patch didn't alter my affection levels for him like it might have for others. For another thing, Moze is the same kind of character as some of my other HoYoVerse faves. Like Ratio and Alhaitham, Moze is the one who's more stoic and doesn't mince his words. He's pretty honest to a fault. But in comparison to Jiaoqiu, he feels more earnest in a way that Jiaoqiu's somewhat suspicious demeanor lacks. Moze's text messages are also ridiculously awkward. It plays into his main appeal point for me: the fact that he's kind of useless and bad at his job.

star rail moze hiding
Screenshot by Siliconera

The Honkai: Star Rail story presents Moze as this cool assassin and spy. He's someone who operates from the shadows and contributes to his general's victory in more unseen ways. In practice, he's kind of...not that. Despite reassuring Jiaoqiu that he can find his way out of the Shackling Prison, we find him lost in the labyrinthe corridors. Very understandable on Moze's part, mind you. He's supposed to be good at hiding, but when you find him on the Skysplitter, his disguise is so easy to see through that a toddler could probably find him.

Even from a combat lens, Moze's not doing too hot. "The moment he reveals his blade usually spells doom for his enemies," his official description reads. But at no point did he ever present a legitimate threat to the borisin. Even in gameplay, he can be so situational that I've gone battles where Moze doesn't do anything. He's great against bosses or enemies with high HP, since he can pull off his follow-up attacks without someone killing them first. But outside of this niche, he usually spends the majority of the match vibing. Despite these faults, the more useless this man is, the more fond of him I am.

I'm aware in terms of the borisin thing that Moze's supposed to work from the shadows. So a direct confrontation against borisin running amok in the streets wasn't going to pan out in his favor anyway. Hopefully in the future though, we can see him live up to his titles and expectations. Both Feixiao and Jiaoqiu had their time to shine. So it's only fair if Moze, like Luka or Qingque, gets to spend some time in the spotlight too. I mean, just look at Yanqing. Seeing him get his redemption and a satisfying character arc was great, especially after so much time as the resident punching bag for the Xianzhou 5-stars. I'm not even a Yanqing fan and I'm happy the guy got a win. I have hope that HoYoVerse will give Moze something too.

star rail moze text message
Nerd. Screenshot by Siliconera

It's strange that I'm so fond of Moze though. Usually, these kinds of characters—the ones who receive a certain amount of hype early on, yet the real deal falls short of expectations set within the canon—annoy me. In Fairy Tail, I disliked Erza for the longest time just because the story and characters gassed her up so much that her actual fighting skills disappointed me. Moze, on the other hand, has a reputation as an assassin and intelligence gatherer. So I'm guessing that him failing in fields that don't have much to do with his actual job makes him endearing rather than frustrating.

Loathe as I am to admit it, I have some yumejoshi tendencies in that I occasionally judge characters based on their potential in a real-life romantic relationship. For reference, a yumejoshi is a female otaku who fantasizes herself in a romantic relationship with their favorite character. Moze is "boyfriend material" indeed. I can't deny that a huge part of Moze's charm is that, compared to his compatriots Alhaitham and Ratio, he's really easy to yume for.

genshin impact alhaitham rude

Ratio has a lot of neuroses going on that are difficult to deal with, and I doubt he would want to deal with the average person too. As for Alhaitham, you have to self-insert as Kaveh for a yumejoshi-worthy experience... In comparison to them, we see so little of Moze's personality, even when taking character stories into consideration, that you can take the bits we do know, extrapolate, and play Build-a-Boyfriend in your head. It's not a surprise that I emerged from this patch with only Moze on my mind, despite how much whump HoYoVerse tossed Jiaoqiu's way.

Back when Kaveh first appeared in Genshin Impact, so many of my friends lamented the fact that he's a 4-star. At the time, I didn't really understand. The idea of not getting at least one 4-star when pulling for a 5-star seemed foreign to me. They're on rate-up, for goodness' sake! But then, I never got a single copy of Kuki Shinobu or Chevreuse, even when they were rate-up on banners. I didn't get Luka when he debuted until a few banners later. Heck, I almost didn't get Moze. He only came home on my last 10-pull for Feixiao. So I now understand the pain of liking a 4-star character in a HoYoVerse game. Here's hoping my love for him will convince him to come home in the future and that the accursed desire sensor doesn't kick in.

Honkai: Star Rail is readily available on the PS5, Windows PC, and mobile devices. As a 4-star, you can pull for Moze in Honkai: Star Rail at any time.

There are lots of JRPGs coming out constantly from Atlus, Square Enix, and other Japanese publishers but only a few consoles and platforms are the best for them. Whether you are trying to play previously released titles like Final Fantasy VII Rebirth or check out upcoming games like Metaphor Re:Fantazio, these are the best consoles for JRPGs today.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Sale Appears Alongside Developer Video
Image via Square Enix

Best Consoles for JRPGs Today: PS5

If I had to pick an overall best console today for JRPGs, it would have to be the PlayStation 5 and its more powerful sibling, the PS5 Pro. There is the obvious point in how it is much more powerful than the second console for JRPGs, but also its library as well. The PS5 has the most possible JRPGs since exclusives like Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Final Fantasy XVI, and more demanding third-party games like Tales of Arise are there.

This even includes games that aren't yet available on PC and may potentially never be. If you are looking for the best console to play JRPGs these days, this is the one.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Patch

Nintendo Switch

The runner-up console I would recommend to JRPG fans these days is the Nintendo Switch. This will likely extend to its eventual successor as well. What it lacks in power and graphics, it makes up for in its versatility. You can play amazing JRPGs like Persona 5 Royal and Trails through Daybreak on the go anywhere you like.

In addition, the Nintendo Switch does have its own selection of worthy exclusive JRPGs. Games like Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Fire Emblem Three Houses, and Tokyo Mirage Sessions are all phenomenal games you can't play anywhere else. Plus, it has access to older titles through the Nintendo Switch Online like Earthbound.

Sea of Stars gameplay

Honorable Mention: Steam Deck

Finally, an honorable mention worth considering is the Steam Deck. While technically a PC, it is like the Switch in its portability. It has access many different third-party JRPGs, plus plenty of JRPG-inspired indies like Sea of Stars. Though it lacks some in the hardware department, it makes up for that with its emulation potential for other consoles. However, be very careful when navigating that legally gray area.

Frostpunk 2 review

The original Frostpunk surprisingly appealed to me, despite my usual disdain for city builder and strategy-style games. I adored the gritty, dark, and often disturbing post-apocalyptic setting of trying to survive amidst a never-ending winter. Frostpunk 2 is finally here and as you'll see in our review, it is a much larger and more complicated sequel that gains and loses a lot in the process.

Frostpunk 2 picks up 30 years after the original title, with the same locale of New London and a much broader focus. Players take on the role of the Steward, a person in charge of keeping the city and everyone alive and well. This is similar enough to the base game, as players build out the city further, customize roads, and manage the ever-dwindling resources.

However, nearly every aspect of the original survival city builder is expanded upon here, for better and for worse. The scope is honestly impressive. Instead of focusing on a creating and customizing a single building in New London, you now deal with entire districts. The city is also much larger than ever possible before, with many more citizens and workers.

The sheer amount to deal with is somehow overwhelming in an enjoyable way. You have to constantly make choices that affect the entire city and everyone in it. Do you send kids off to work, instead of school, to improve your petroleum output or keep them educated for their futures? Do you put your workers at risk by blasting further into the mines or play it safer but risk not having enough for your city?

There are countless choices and they aren't the easiest ones to make. Fortunately, this is where the story mode comes into play. This 12-15-hour experience is essentially one huge tutorial. I do wish there was a bit more to the plot, but it provides the occasional little cutscene to give an idea of what's happening. The story mode eases the player into all of the new mechanics and acts as a nice refresher, too. That said, the whole point of the story mode is to prepare the player for the real meat and potatoes of the experience: Utopia Builder. This is the other mode available in Frostpunk 2 at its launch. It is essentially an endless city builder where you are free to do whatever you want.

This means crafting the New London you desire and even beyond that. One of the intriguing new focuses of this sequel is on the colonies. You can create a colony and ship out other citizens to live there. Then you can connect your cities together in one massive network to feed resources from one place to another. This all creates such an intricate and complex system. This complexity only furthers when you have moments where the encroaching cold gets wild. During these special storms, people aren't able to work. Instead, you have to rely on the resources and food you've saved over the months to survive. These moments are a bit too frequent in my experience and annoying, but they add an intriguing layer.

However, the real standout part about Frostpunk 2 is the new Council Hall. Here, the several factions in the city come into play. Each faction has its own desires for the future of the city and they often conflict with one another. One may care about the people more, while others prefer improving the city at any cost. You as the Steward have to manage these factions and essentially negotiate with them to pass legislations. This often plays out in buttering up one faction or even bribing them to side with you. It is a delicate and fascinating duel of politics that I quite enjoyed as my favorite new part of this sequel.

In fact, the Council Hall helped to alleviate my core issue with Frostpunk 2, which is actually the scope. Something about the original Frostpunk that captivated me was its emphasis on the people. It physically hurt to see children and even workers die. After all, you could clearly see them all as little people running around the city. This sequel expands so much that it loses that personal feel. This sequel feels much more like a numbers game rather than the emotional and often morally challenging survival experience it was before.

Even still, Frostpunk 2 is a worthy enough survival city builder sequel. Like the original, it is absolutely stunning to play, though I do recommend against Steam Deck. It just doesn't run as well and the input controls aren't the best here. If you have a beefy PC or modern console, this is a real looker to play. With the complicated decisions, larger scope, and new Council Hall decisions, Frostpunk 2 is one of the most elaborate and complex sim games available.

Frostpunk 2 releases for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on September 20, 2024. Early access begins for Digital Deluxe players on September 17, 2024.
