This Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 UK gaming GPU deal is outstanding

Now is a great time to pick up an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 GPU for your gaming PC, as this graphics card deal enables you to save 20% on the usual cost of this overclocked MSI Ventus 2X card. The only downer is that you have to be in the UK to take advantage of this offer, which comes courtesy of Overclockers, but that's a great price for this card if your feet are standing on the right piece of rock right now.

We criticized the price of this Nvidia GPU in our original GeForce RTX 4060 review, meaning it missed out on a place in our best graphics card guide. However, at £254.99 it's a much more tempting proposition for UK gamers than its original price of £299.99.

The Callisto Protocol failed because of the gameplay, CEO says

If you haven't played The Callisto Protocol and you can lay hands on it today, I recommend heartily that you give it a shot. The opening sections are the strongest, when the monsters are fewer and further between, and you're fighting for your life with only a scant couple of weapons and the game's novel melee combat system. Heavily inspired by Dead Space, it serves as the ideal companion piece to the EA-published horror-action series, but Callisto, unfortunately, struggled to get started. Developer Striking Distance laid off a number of staff and the chances of a sequel now seem scant. Now, the CEO of The Callisto Protocol's publisher Krafton says that the game failed to meet expectations due to issues within its core gameplay.

Meet AMD Ryzen AI Max, the new CPU with a reportedly PS5-busting GPU

AMD reportedly has a new gaming CPU range in the works with a desktop-level GPU inside it, and the names of the new chips have apparently just been leaked. According to the latest rumors, the lineup of CPUs reportedly codenamed Strix Halo, will feature the new AMD Ryzen AI Max brand, and specs for three chips have just been leaked. If the specs are to be believed, the GPU inside the new chip is even more powerful than the one on the PlayStation 5, marking a new era for integrated graphics.

These are all laptop chips, so they're not going to be competing with the best gaming CPU models on the desktop, but they look like they're going to be seriously powerful. Not only do the new processors contain up to 16 AMD Zen 5 CPU cores, but the top two models also reportedly contain GPUs with 40 AMD RDNA 3.5 compute units – that's eight more than you get in the Radeon RX 7600 right now, and it would add up to a massive 2,560 stream processors.

Is EA Sports FC 25 Steam Deck compatible?

Is EA Sports FC 25 Steam Deck compatible? New year, same story for football fans who want to enjoy EA's latest game on the Steam Deck. The decision to use an anti-cheat for online play is understandable, but it continues to exclude players on Linux-based systems.

While the Steam Deck still has our vote as the best handheld gaming PC, its Linux-based SteamOS is undoubtedly an issue when it comes to competitive online games and anti-cheat systems. Some work fine with Linux, but most don't, and it leads to situations where games are sometimes stripped of content, just like with GTA 5 on Steam Deck after the recent introduction of BattlEye.

Big new Hunt Showdown 1896 update might stop it getting review bombed

It's the same problem we had with the 2022 version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Decent shooter, some good ideas, lots to like - but every time you wanted to get into a game, you had to navigate a frustrating set of menus. When it's good, we take the user interface for granted. When it's not working very well, the UI can feel like an aggravating obstacle between you and actually getting to play something. After the soft relaunch of the Crytek FPS introduced a totally new main menu, recent Hunt Showdown 1896 Steam reviews are still 'mostly negative.' Now, however, a sizable update makes sweeping UI changes based on player feedback, and could shift sentiment back in the right direction.

Best turn-based strategy games on PC 2024

What are the best turn-based strategy games? The break afforded by 'turns' allows us to think, ponder, and plan our moves with as much expert precision as we can muster. Witnessing that master plan unfold can be immensely satisfying, and suddenly, you get a taste of becoming a master tactician.

This genre is also home to the 'one more turn' trope - that feeling of near-addiction that compels you to click the 'End Turn' button just one more time to see what happens in one of the best PC games. Maybe you're waiting to see the outcome of a daring attack; perhaps you're just trying to click through some downtime. We also have the best strategy games or 4X games to see our thoughts on that particular niche. Note that despite many similarities, we're not counting tactical RPG games among this list, as that's technically a different genre.

Best RTS games on PC 2024

What are the best RTS games? Few things are as satisfying as building up an immense army and simply washing over your foes like a river over stones, erasing their existence as effortlessly as a click. As one of the classic PC genres, real-time strategy games require forward planning in a slow and realistic time period, giving you the chance to make the best - or most diabolical - decisions possible.

Starcraft and Age of Empires largely define the genre and are some of the best PC games out there, but indie games like Northgard and Driftland have shown plenty of other voices can be heard. The rise of MOBAs has challenged the RTS scene significantly over the past decade, but this hasn't stopped some worthy games from rising to the top ranks to earn their place in the Hall of Fame. Here's our take on the best RTS games on PC.

God of War Ragnarok Steam reviews struggle due to Helldivers 2 issue

It's been a rocky few months for Helldivers 2, as Arrowhead battles to find the right blend of fairness and fun. For some players, the regular changes to Helldivers 2's stratagems and arsenal are part of a welcome effort to keep the game even. For others, Arrowhead is micromanaging, and its regular updates and patches are slowly flattening the enjoyment in pursuit of an impossible idea of 'balance.' Largely, though, the shift in sentiment towards Helldivers 2 began back in May, when Arrowhead told PC players it would have to link their Steam accounts to the PlayStation Network. While that update never went ahead, now the God of War Ragnarok Steam reviews are in, the Sony Santa Monica game is being criticized over the same issue.

Intel's new gaming CPU boxes just leaked, Core Ultra 9 looks great

The packaging for the new lineup of Intel Arrow Lake gaming CPUs has just leaked out, and shows that the forthcoming new Core Ultra 9 285K is going to come in a special box, just like the company's previous flagship chips. You might think the box is a negligible part of the equation, particularly when there's no cooler in the box any more, but Intel knows the value of packaging when it comes to hardware enthusiasts, and it looks like it wants its new chips to be under the spotlight in unboxing videos.

Intel is expected to release its new Arrow Lake gaming CPU lineup in October 2024, when they will go up against the latest AMD Zen 5 chips in the best gaming CPU battle. If Intel can get the performance right for the price, and avoid the stability issues that have plagued its 14th-gen Raptor Lake CPUs, then it could be onto a winner, and it looks as though the company is hoping the packaging will entice some gamers to its new top-end chip.

It's a pirate's life for me, and it's a pirate's life for Goro Majima, recurring eyepatched anti-hero of the used-to-be-called-Yakuza series. He's the star of the just-announced Like A Dragon: Pirate Yakuza In Hawaii, a game I can only applaud for the brazen straightforwardness of its title. Whatever Sega were drinking when they signed off on Metaphor: ReFantazio, they were not drinking when they signed off on this. They were definitely drinking something, though. Here's the reveal trailer.

God of War Ragnarök initially looks like it has little trouble with squeezing itself into a Steam Deck. Yet like a flask of mead laced with Odin's raven piss, the seemingly crisp treat of Ragnarök's handheld performance masks a nasty blend of technical troubles and what is, essentially, an always-online requirement by stealth.

"We have been sold this myth for a very long time that unions have to be for blue collar workers in an industrial setting in the early 1900s," Autumn Mitchell tells me. "The very simple definition of a union is just you and your co-workers coming together and forming a collective body. You can do that anywhere."

A QA tester with Zenimax currently on union leave, Mitchell joined the Communication Workers Of America (CWA) as a full-time organiser after she and her colleagues formed what was, at the time, the biggest union in videogames - ZeniMax Workers United. Now she helps the CWA do what they did for her and her colleagues at Zenimax: provide support, training, resources and guidance for workers in the videogame industry who have decided, for whatever reason, that they want to unionise.

I'm reasonably sure Final Fantasy 16 isn't the longest Final Fantasy I've ever played, but it feels that way, for a multitude of reasons. The major one is that a lot of its quests exist to create distance between places and plot beats. They are overwritten errands such as bringing people lunch or fetching herbs or carrying letters - dessicated, MMO-ish fare, thrust into a moderately enjoyable single-character action-RPG for the sake of incremental worldbuilding and scale.

The post-apocalyptic wastelands of Rain World are stunning, brutal, and full of strange creatures that would like to eat your kittenish face. It's a landscape of wonder and pain, and it's about to get a little more wonderful and painful. The upcoming Watcher expansion, which adds new places to visit and a new type of slugcat to play as, will be coming out early next year, say the developers. There's a trailer to say so. Look at this slippery gastropodal feline, standing calmly in the rain, as if the torrential and lethal weight of the water will not crush that little fuzzy head. The gall!

The Legend of Heroes Kai no Kiseki AI quote translator by ELLA will appear at TGS 2024

An expressive AI translator taking on quotes for The Legend of Heroes: Kai no Kiseki will appear at Tokyo Game Show 2024. Digital Hearts has announced that it will showcase the AI engine ELLA (Expressive Localization and Linguistic AI) at 4Gamer's booth in Makuhari Messe for the whole duration of the event.

Digital Hearts will also work with Nihon Falcom to showcase the translation AI. The companies will first prepare original lines based on scenes from the game. ELLA will then provide five candidate lines in each of the four available languages: Japanese, English, Traditional Chinese, and Simplified Chinese.

The public will also be able to vote for their favorite lines that suit the characters the best, but Nihon Falcom's president Toshihiro Kondo will make the final call. Digital Hearts will hold sweepstakes based on this poll, where it will hand over exclusive posters to 50 winners who place the same votes as Kondo did.

This AI quote generator booth will add another entry to the list of spots related to Kai no Kiseki at TGS 2024. Nihon Falcom had previously announced that it will set up playable demo builds of the game at Konami's booth for the event's whole duration. The company will also hold a talk show with the game's Japanese voice actors and a couple of live concerts by the Falcom jdk Band on Sunday, September 29, 2024.

The Legend of Heroes: Kai no Kiseki ~Farewell, O Zemuria~ will be available for PlayStation 5 and 4 in Japan and East Asia on September 26, 2024. That's the exact same day Tokyo Game Show 2024 starts running at Makuhari Messe until September 29, 2024.

Image of an Armored Core under assembly in the hangar from Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon

The latest models getting represented in the Variable Infinity series of Armored Core model kits have been revealed. The kits are of Armored Cores famous for their showing in the story and openings of Armored Core: Last Raven and Armored Core V. This includes the AC: Oracle and Matsukaze Mdl. 2.

The first item is Evangel's AC: Oracle from Armored Core: Last Raven. This is a reprint of the kit from 2010. The blue and white AC faces off against the player during the end of Last Raven's story and his kit is replicated accurately, from the laser rifle and blade on the arms to the shoulder mounted cannons. Oracle stands at 190mm in height and can be disassembled and mixed with any other Variable Infinity Armored Core kit. It is currently available for preorder through Kotobukiya partners like Gundam Planet for $49.95 at pre-order and $54.95 upon official release date.

You can take a look at the AC: Oracle below:

The Armored Core V entry is of a tank tread AC. Specifically, the Matsukaze Mdl. 2 from Armored Core: Verdict Day. This is the first tank-tread AC represented in the Variable Infinity and is an entirely new kit in the line. It made its first appearance in the gritty opening movie of Armored Core V, where it grinds through a city after being dropped from a helicopter.

Much like previous Variable Infinity Armored Core kits, it can be disassembled in sections and customized, including attaching the tank treads to other Armored Cores to create your own custom model. It is retailing for $189.95 at preorder at partner store Gundam Planet, but the full official release will be $199.99.

You can take a look at the Matsukaze here:

These are not the only Armored Core Variable Infinity kits to be getting a reissue either. In November, 2024, a kit of Armored Core: For Answer's White Glint will be reissued, with even more new kits to come from Bandai Namco's 30 Minute Missions model series.

The Oracle and Matsukaze Mdl. 2 Variable Infinity kits will be arriving in May, 2025 and pre-orders are open now at the Kotobukiya US store and Gundam Planet.

Xenogears Weltall Form-ism Act action figure

Square Enix has revealed a new mech action figure based on the Weltall from Xenogears. The company has also opened pre-orders for the Form-ism Act figure on its Japanese e-Store with a price tag of 39,600 yen (~$275).

The non-scale action figure of the starting Gear of the game's protagonist Fei Fong Wong will stand at around 20 cm (~7.87 in) tall. Its body parts will have a wide range of movements to help reproduce martial arts poses, such as the high kick. This new figure will also have an original feature where the owner can extend its wing binders to trigger a new mode resembling System Id.

Here are some of the sample images showing the poses the Weltall Form-ism Act figure can take:

Square Enix had previously released Structure Arts model kits of four Gears from the game, including Weltall, in March 2021. While those kits required the owner to assemble the Gears, this new action figure will come pre-built with die-cast joints. Square Enix also had the Gear's designer Junya Ishigaki supervise the action figure's production to make sure it stayed true to the original design.

The Form-ism Act action figure of the Weltall from Xenogears will be available on February 22, 2025.

Review: Reynatis Unapologetically Harkens Back to the PS2 Era

I was unsure what to make of Reynatis for the first few hours. It throws a lot of interesting mechanics at you but simultaneously adopts a linear pacing and environmental structure that you would expect to see in the PlayStation 2 era. When I reached the halfway point, I became invested in Reynatis and started really enjoying my time with the game. However, it undoubtedly has flaws and some notable graphical issues on the Switch, which will be a dealbreaker for some players.

Kazushige Nojima, who has been involved in Kingdom Hearts and the Final Fantasy franchise, is the scenario writer for Reynatis. And oh boy, it shows as the story here is stellar. While playing, I couldn't help but think that Reynatis must have gotten inspiration from the cancelled Final Fantasy Versus XIII game (which Kazushige Nojima was the scenario writer for) because there are some uncanny parallels here, which we will get into later.

Review: Reynatis Unapologetically Harkens Back to the PS2 Era
Image via Siliconera

Reynatis is set in a world where magic is outlawed, and its use is strictly prohibited. Wizards conceal their powers from the public, and a night-time curfew is enforced to maintain law and order in Shibuya. There is also an illegal drug circulating called rubrum, and anyone who consumes it will eventually turn into a hideous monster.

In some weird ways, the plot feels like a bizarre amalgamation of Kingdom Hearts meets Tokyo Ghoul. That statement might be polarizing to some people, but these two themes strangely work together. On the one hand, you have overpowered warriors wielding magical weapons, venturing through portals to alternative dimensions. The other explores dark supernatural themes, as the urban city is troubled by gruesome half-human creatures, with ideals and philosophies constantly being challenged.

For the first half of the game, the story bounces back and forth between two characters, Marin and Sari, who have contrasting ideological beliefs regarding how magic should be treated and conducted. The story-pacing is a bit rigid, mainly because it frequently changes between both protagonists. One time, I played as one of the characters for less than 25 minutes before it jumped back into the other character's perspective. I really wished it stayed with one character longer. But as you might expect, their paths eventually intertwine, and they join up as one big team, and that's when the game starts to flourish.

Image via Siliconera

For wizards to conceal their identity, they enter a suppressed form, which, for some reason, means putting some hat or hood over their heads. If you are in this form, citizens of Shibuya will assume you're a member of the general public and will ignore you while you walk around. However, you can also enter a liberated form, which shows your true magical prowess in full swing. If citizens see you, you will start trending on social media, and if you reach the number one spot, the M.E.A. officers will hunt you down unless you go to a safe spot to lower the attention drawn to you. Think of it like the GTA wanted system.

Not only that, but the pressure of trending on social media will put stress on you, giving buffs and debuffs when you're in combat. To begin with, this stress system might seem like a big balancing act, and to an extent, it is, but its purpose is to give players options on how they want to play. You can play it safe by keeping your stress low and having many defence perks, or you can amp up the stress levels to strengthen your attacks but be more vulnerable to offensive blows.

Image via Siliconera

Reynatis, on surface value, seems to harbor a standard hack-and-slash combat system, like Kingdom Hearts, but it adopts a unique mechanic that spices up the fighting and revolves around constantly changing and adapting your playstyle. You can only unleash attacks when you're liberated, but being in this form will slowly deplete your MP. In contrast, if you're in a suppressed state, MP will slowly replenish, but this is the only time you can dodge attacks, which builds up your MP bar at a substantial rate. Essentially, the liberated state is offensive, whereas the suppressed state is defensive. It's an exciting system to play, but it will take a few hours before you start switching between states seamlessly.

At the end of the skirmish, you are ranked out of five stars, which will determine the number of experience points you will get from that fight, which is based on various factors like how many times you changed characters, the amount MP absorbed and performing certain moves. This encourages you to change the way you're fighting constantly. It's rather fun to try and aim to get higher star ratings, and the combat difficulty never gets too crazy that you feel like these aspects hinder you.

Review: Reynatis Unapologetically Harkens Back to the PS2 Era
Image via Siliconera

Now, the people who never got over the cancellation of Final Fantasy Versus XIII will notice that the combat system in Reynatis appears to have a lot of similarities. The main striking one is the main character. Marin's final menace attack is an animation of swords floating in the sky before they all fly towards the enemy, similar to Noctis in the Final Fantasy Versus XIII trailer. There was also a big emphasis on dodging incoming attacks back in the trailer, which is present in Reynatis. The atmosphere of the fights feels very alike, and I find it hard to believe that Reynatis didn't get some inspiration from Final Fantasy Versus XIII.

Although this is not the only game which has clearly inspired Reynatis, as when you reach just over halfway through the game, you will come across a cross-over-event with The World Ends with You, where you will bump into Rindo and Shoka in an alternative Shibuya. Without giving too much away, this side mission diversion is super enjoyable, and any fan of the franchise will get giddy from seeing this inclusion. It even has a boss fight featured in NEO: The World Ends with You.

The environmental structure in Reynatis is worth highlighting. Let's start with the positives. Shibuya is phenomenal and perfectly captures the nightlife of the hustling urban streets of Japan. But the way the streets are designed is small and incredibly cramped. At first, I thought this might have been intentional in capturing Shibuya's real-life mood. However, at specific points in the game, you travel to different dimensions, which act as dungeons, but their paths are even narrower, and to make matters worse, the environmental backdrops are mediocre at best. All these flaws create an experience that mimics what you would find in a PlayStation 2 RPG, which some are bound to adore and others will loathe. For the most part, I liked many of these aspects, but I wish the areas you transported to had more life to them.

Review: Reynatis Unapologetically Harkens Back to the PS2 Era
Image via Siliconera

The aesthetics are another aspect that might be hit or miss for people. The entire attitude and atmosphere embodies an edgy persona from start to finish. This is to match the gritty and sombre tone of the plot, which it succeeds at. Some of the outfits are highly detailed and really give off futuristic urban street vibes. But the characters would look unpolished in cutscenes and in-game. I also observed what I believe may be a model issue with the character called Moa. Her hair would shake during cutscenes, which would be a bit off-putting.

I've been playing Reynatis on the Switch, so I can't comment on other systems, but there are a few issues. Firstly, the game crashed on me a few times, which was annoying, but luckily, there is an auto-save system, so I never lost too much progress. The main issue was the camera angle, which in some of the cramped environments is just pure bad. If I were playing in handheld mode on the Switch, this would be even worse, and sometimes I wouldn't even be able to see the character performing their move, so I always stayed playing on the dock. To its merit, the loading times were excellent and faster than I expected on the Switch.

Reynatis is the pineapple on pizza of RPG's this year. Some will love that Reynatis tries to implement various concepts while attempting to keep the magic that made some of the classic titles on the PlayStation 2 so renowned. Others will feel this type of RPG is a massive step backwards for the genre. Personally, I liked Reynatis, but the performance issues held back the experience for me.

Reynatis will come to the PS4, PS5, Switch, and PC in North America and Europe on September 27, 2024, and then in Australia on October 4, 2024.
