PCGamesN Thursday, May 22, 2025 7:20 PM Forget the new Call of Duty game, forget Marathon, forget even Battlefield 6 - Splitgate 2 is the multiplayer FPS game I've been the most hyped for. The first game's blend of Halo and Portal was amazing, but despite the great gameplay, it didn't have the infrastructure or content stream to go the distance. Splitgate 2 is looking to change that, and today sees the start of its open beta which contains almost everything you're going to get in the full game later this year. Plus, the Splitgate 2 open beta has no end date, and all your progress will carry over when 1.0 arrives. MORE FROM PCGAMESN: Best FPS games, Best free PC games, Best multiplayer games |
PCGamesN Thursday, May 22, 2025 6:21 PM The fact that Blizzard is already showing off what's coming in Diablo 4 Season 9 gave me a bit of a jumpscare - time can't be zipping by that quickly, can it? Then I remembered that Season 8 was always meant to be an unusually short season. Consider my existential crisis halted, for now. It looks like it's going to be a spicy season as well, because alongside the usual influx of seasonal content, Nightmare Dungeons are getting some new features. The ripples on the water, the hypnotic bobbing of your float, and the sounds of nature around you all bring your heart rate down - only for a bite to get your pulse racing once again. It's also become one of those must-have mechanics in the videogame world. It's so popular, it's almost an expectation these days that triple-A RPGs and MMOs should have some kind of fishing minigame. PCGamesN Thursday, May 22, 2025 12:28 PM I have a love-hate relationship with life games. I've put countless hours into Dreamlight Valley, tried Coral Island, and am loving the new Doloc Town. Like many others, I played plenty of The Sims in my youth and became obsessed with Animal Crossing: New Horizons during the pandemic. Though I adore the relaxing nature of the simulation genre, each demands so much time that it's hard to get into new releases. One that might be worth trying out, though, is the upcoming Starsand Island, which combines the best elements of them all. After a few hours with an early build, I think this cute life sim has what it takes to be the next big hit. MORE FROM PCGAMESN: Best relaxing games, Best life games |
PCGamesN Thursday, May 22, 2025 12:26 PM Warhammer 40k: Boltgun is the perfect example of a modern boomer shooter. It looks and sounds exactly how you remember the FPS games of the '90s, but it plays entirely differently. Everything is as smooth as butter, and there's a fluidity to the gorey action that makes Boltgun a total joy to get your hands on. PCGamesN Thursday, May 22, 2025 12:20 PM It's been a full year since Kasedo's first ever trailer for Warhammer 40k: Mechanicus 2. Bathed in the perfect amount of eerie, neon green, the XCOM-like classic is back, this time centered around longtime big bad, the Necrons. Allowing players to experience both sides of the story, you'll be able to play as the skeletal Xenos and the titular Adeptus Mechanicus, an unsettling machine race dedicated to the Omnissiah. But, as the latest gameplay trailer reveals, during the course of our journey we'll run into both some familiar faces and a Warhammer 40k faction that has never appeared in a videogame before. PCGamesN Thursday, May 22, 2025 12:34 PM As someone that's relatively new to the franchise, Owlcat Games' Rogue Trader is perhaps my favorite Warhammer 40k game. While the chaotic gore of Space Marine 2 certainly has its charm, and the strategic action of Dawn of War will never not be iconic, as a big Baldur's Gate 3 fan and turn-based enthusiast, Rogue Trader was simply perfect for me. Hot off the heels of its last game, however, Owlcat has revealed Warhammer 40k: Dark Heresy, a party-based CRPG that feels like it borrows a lot from Larian's epic and the developer's previous fantasy adventure, Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous. While the details are relatively thin right now, I'm beyond excited. |
PCGamesN Thursday, May 22, 2025 12:07 PM An endless battle encompassing hundreds of thousands of soldiers. Dozens of factions, all outfitted with their own weaponry, armor, and physical abilities. Warhammer 40k is built for the RTS genre - it's where the Space Marines and Chaos feel most at home. Almost 20 years on, Dawn of War remains one of the best-loved games in the entire 40k canon. Developed by Relic, the studio behind Company of Heroes and the gorgeous anniversary edition of Age of Empires 4, it's like a bulky, grimy reimagining of Command and Conquer, combining classic real-time mechanics with the defining Warhammer art style. PCGamesN Thursday, May 22, 2025 12:02 PM Logitech just revealed the G522 Lightspeed, a new wireless gaming headset that comes with great audio drivers, a super clear microphone, and, most importantly, a lightweight build for comfort during long gaming sessions. I've been using the G522 as my daily headset for two weeks now, and I'm surprised at just how quickly it's become my preferred headset for gaming, music, and work. Logitech is no stranger when it comes to releasing some of the best gaming headsets, but we typically expect the company's top-end headsets to be released as part of the G Pro or Astro lines. With the G522, a headset with broad appeal, it's harder to make a splash and stand out when so many brands are fighting for your attention. I'll publish a full review of the headset soon, but so far it's looking like a decent headset for a number of reasons. A new system in Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma will allow players to use a technique to travel between worlds and timelines to pursue additional romance options with the bachelors and bachelorettes you can marry. You'll be able to go to an "alternate future," where you have a new partner, all without losing any of your progress.
While Marvelous didn't update the English version of Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma website yet to include the localized name of this mechanic, the Japanese name literally translates to "Technique to Travel Between Worlds." With this feature, you can go to alternate timelines with a new partner, all without having to lose your current family, level, or inventory. You can travel freely between worlds, and each save data can have up to thirty different timelines. This gives you the opportunity to explore the twelve different romance options in Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma without having to completely restart your progress or give up a current love affair with one of the other bachelors or bachelorettes.
Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma is the latest entry in the long-running Rune Factory series. This spin-off features a Japanese-inspired setting, and there are two protagonists you can choose from. The gender of your protagonist does limit romance options in Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma, as all love interests can be married regardless of your choice. Marvelous first revealed this game during the August 2024 Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase.
Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma will come out for the Nintendo Switch and WIndows PC via Steam on May 30, 2025.

Kaiyodo announced some new Dead or Alive 6 figures, and they'll be based on recurring DOA heroines Honoka and Marie Rose. Both are early in development, as the manufacturer only shared teasers for both on social media. These announcements were in both Japanese and English, so it is likely they are being prepared for a worldwide release. The company often does that, especially with its Revoltech figures.
At the moment, only official images of the characters based on their appearances in Dead or Alive 6 appeared, which suggests each of them will be depicted in their official, default costumes from that installment. The reveal also confirmed these will be 1/7 scale figures. This means they will likely be around 10 inches tall.
Here are the official announcement images for both of the figures.

SuperGroupies announced a Metaphor: ReFantazio clothing and accessory collection that includes items based on the protagonist, like Will's coat, and could be used for everyday use or worn as a cosplay item. A Protagonist Model Trench Coat and Shoulder Bag will both be available in "late" November 2025. As a reminder, Super Groupies did note that Trump tariffs will affect prices for those of us in the US, so it is important to keep in mind possible "tariff adjustment charges" before using the worldwide shipping option to purchase any items.
The SuperGroupies Protagonist Model Trench Coat based on the one Will wears throughout Metaphor: ReFantazio is the more expensive of the two items at $299.99, and it is also the one that most resembles the actual jacket that is close enough to the real costume that it could be used for cosplay. It is a double-breasted style with a light white and grey plaid print. There's a belt at the waist, and there is an optional, removable throat tab designed to resemble the armor at the neck in-game. The interior tag resembles the novel our avatar carries, and there's a reference to Gallica with a gold silhouette on the inside as well. It is available in sizes medium through XXL. It is also a unisex style, so anyone can wear it.
Here's a closer look at that coat.

The $239.99 Protagonist Model Shoulder Bag is inspired by the one Will carries throughout Metaphor: ReFantazio. It's not an exact replica, however. It is about a foot tall and is over 15 inches wide. It comes with a shoulder strap that is about 55 inches long, so you can wear it cross-body. It can hold B4 size papers and books. It also has a tag inside that resembles the novel in the game and matches the tag in the coat.

Capcom announced that it will add both free and paid items based on Street Fighter 6 to Monster Hunter Wilds, with the update and DLC arriving on May 28, 2025. This means a Chun-Li costume for Alma to buy, Akuma layered armor for our hunters, and the ability to dress our Palicos as Blanka-chan with layered armor. A new trailer highlighted all of these in action.
This is actually the second time Akuma appeared as layered armor in an entry. It was in Monster Hunter Rise as an Event Quest reward back in August 2021. This version of the armor features special actions.
As for the paid DLC, a few items came up. Alma will get both Chun-Li and Cammy costumes. Stickers featuring characters like Ryu, Akuma, Juri, Cammy, and Blanka-chan will appear. Gestures with attack properties that recreate the Hadoken, Shoryuken, and Tatsumaki Senpu-Kyaku will come up. There will also be a Blanka-chan Doll pendant for our equipment. Prices aren't available for this yet. However, the description on the YouTube trailer noted these are all sold piecemeal and not in a pack.
Here is a trailer showing off the Street Fighter 6 DLC and free updates for Monster Hunter Wilds.
This is the first major crossover for Monster Hunter Wilds. However, past games featured a number of them. In Monster Hunter Rise, there were tie-ins with titles like Mega Man, Okami, Sonic the Hedgehog, and the aforementioned Street Fighter collab.
Monster Hunter Wilds is available for the PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC. Street Fighter 6 is on the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC now, and it will come to the Switch 2 on June 13, 2025. The Street Fighter 6 Monster Hunter Wilds free crossover update and paid DLC will debut on May 28, 2025.

Shift Up showed exactly how some of the Stellar Blade Goddess of Victory: NIKKE costumes and the minigame based on the mobile game will look in a trailer for the crossover DLC. This also featured a peek at the Scarlet boss fight as well. There's also a Doro Dorothy cameo at the very end.
This video began with a look at the Stellar Blade minigame gameplay, as that involves shooting down foes in the same way someone would when playing NIKKE. As it starts, Shift Up quickly cycles through a few of the character costumes for Eve in the add-on. First, she's dressed as Rapi. Then, she looks like Modernia. A quick peek at Anis' attire comes after. Her Alice outfit appeared after that. She's briefly dressed like Dorothy after that, before returning to her normal appearance.
From there, we see the cover-based shooting familiar from NIKKE. What honestly look like Rapture robots, in addition to Stellar Blade foes, descend on her location. We hide behind cover and emerge to shoot at them, and the UI suggests the Burst system from NIKKE may be present.
After that we see some familiar faces. Volt the dog shows up and interacts with Eve. We then get a better look at her in the different NIKKE costumes in Stellar Blade. Eve meets Scarlet after that, and that leads into a peek at the boss fight between the two characters. Things close out with Eve encountering Doro Dorothy at about the 1:27 point.
Here's the full trailer:
Stellar Blade is available for the PS5 and comes to the PC via Steam on June 11, 2025, and the Goddess of Victory: NIKKE DLC debuts the same day and is a part of the complete edition of the game. NIKKE is available on PCs and mobile devices now.

Gather around, kids. Uncle Destructoid is here to tell you all about a special ceremony of years past, a rite of passage for gamers everywhere.
Before the era of instant gratification, eight-second videos, and full game preloads, there was a little thing called midnight release parties. They were exciting, fun, and filled with joy and good memories while growing up as a blossoming gamer and human being. But sometimes, nostalgia is overrated.
![]()
When a new video game launches these days, you can begin playing it right at midnight in your time zone (or even earlier) without ever having to leave your gamer cave. That was a wild thought and impossibility not all that long ago. It's a luxury that I still do not take for granted, because as much as I miss the allure of midnight release parties, I do not miss them whatsoever.
I like and miss the idea of midnight release parties more than the parties themselves, because the thought of having to leave my house and stand outside of a GameStop for an hour or more surrounded by strangers or people I don't want to talk to, sounds just plain horrifying.
Sometimes the parties would have tournaments where you could play the new game, or giveaways of merch surrounding the new game. But they always meant dealing with the sales people trying to pitch you on buying something else or preordering another game. No thank you.
Also, I would always somehow find a way to run into that one slightly weird kid from school, too, who'd try to have an awkward conversation that would somehow always have an objectively incorrect or offensive opinion about the game we were both there for. And that's about where our similarities ended.
Having to make small talk with weird strangers was the worst part about it, I think. Hey man, I'm here for Resident Evil 5, so I just want to pick it up and go home and play it. I don't care that you think Albert Wesker sucks as a villain (oh, it's all coming back to me now).
I distinctly remember going to midnight releases for games like several CoD titles (for Black Ops 2, I picked it up, played all night, and called in sick to work because I never slept), Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, and Destiny. Those were the games I needed to have ASAP, and I needed to have them on physical media. Now I can't really be bothered with either factor.
There was also seemingly always a handful of people there who weren't buying the game that the party was made for, either. For all 80-plus people on hand to pick up the new Call of Duty or Halo, there was always one or two folks there to grab the latest obscure JRPG or something. I appreciate those people a lot more now, because I probably am those people.
Now? Forget leaving the house if I don't have to. This is one of the nicest things about advancements in gaming technology because I can be lazier than ever. If I'm excited for a new game, you better believe I'm preordering and preloading that shit to play it as soon as I can. Or, more likely, I'll just play it the next day because staying up to play something at midnight sounds exhausting.
![]()
The one downside of the "gotta play it right now" crowd when it comes to preloading is not having physical media. I appreciate games on discs as much as anyone, and I get it. But it feels like most game discs these days are just there for show as you have to download the full title on top of it, anyway.
At the same time, it makes me sad. I long for the simpler days when midnight release parties sounded exciting and not like a drag. A place where gamers could come together and enjoy themselves while finding common ground, which feels all too rare nowadays, where everything seems to be a fight.
Man, times really do change. And so have I. But one thing that hasn't changed, even after turning gaming into a career, is that there's still a lot of excitement to be had and memories to be made while gaming, whether I leave the house for it or not.
Do you remember midnight release parties, or are you still not old enough to vote? Let us know in the comments below about your fond (or frightening) midnight release memories.

The Not That Guy Evolution is your best friend for getting a new upgrade in EA FC 25 that will allow you to improve one of your lower-rated items in Ultimate Team.
Not only is the evolution available for free, but the upgrades offered are also pretty decent. It's ideally meant to be used on LB cards that don't offer multiple positions, and you get stat boosts, new playstyles, and roles in exchange.
